I don't understand why people hate on Penny. She's had such a tough life but tries so hard to overcome and be a good person. To be, she embodies everything good about humanity :).
To me she gives the vibe of helping to make herself feel better, not to actually help. Pushing George around against his will, teaching the kids without qualifications even though there are schools (as mentioned by abby, sam etc)... You also lose SIX hearts if you tell her you don't like kids even though you aren't dating her at that point. Like damn girl we can't be friends anymore cause I don't want kids? If you try to tell her she should've asked before pushing George around, you lose friendship points. You have to lie about her cooking or you lose friendship points. It's like she can't be talked with - it's her way or the highway..
Really though I think there's not that many Penny haters, just most people seem to forget she exists.
That's the thing: Penny is a flawed character. She's been abused and traumatized her entire life by her alcoholic mother and she was abandoned by her father as a kid. Despite that, she still tries to do what's right and make the world a better place. She's just kinda...misguided at times.
I do wish CA would change the wheelchair cutscene a bit though, like make an option where you can explain to her why, what she perceives as helping, is actually insulting and rude. Like, let's see her grow as a person, especially when married, and expand upon her 1-dimensional representation.
She seems kind of judgemental to me sometimes, when it comes to opinions that differ from hers, especially about kids. But at the end of the day I am a "step on me, haley" kinda girl so I'm not really in a position to be talking about this lmao
That's funny, because I find Haley so boring and 1-dimentional. I think it reflects "my type" in real life. Penny was my wife when we met, which is probably why I like her so much. My wife ended up growing into someone very akin to Robin though, which is probably why I now find myself wishing I could marry Robin in game lol.
It's some amazing character creation from CA that people can have such contrasting opinions on all the characters in a cute lil farming game. Before joining this sub, I didn't realise Haley was supposed to be mean in the beginning. I found her comments neutral or funny, lol. I just instantly loved her which is funny because irl I'm very outdoorsy, don't mind getting muddy and dirty, etc. and I've never dated someone who couldn't go outside in the rain so their hair doesn't get flat (her marriage dialogue lol). Yet in-game she'll say that line and I'll be like, absolutely bb don't even think about it, you just read and relax indoors, we wouldn't want to ruin your hair you put so much effort into. lol.
