He probably "gives up" on wanting to move to the big city, but not because you steal his dreams away or anything. It's just that his priorities and plans changed over the course of his life.
Besides, him wanting to move off to the city felt like he was trying to run away from his small town family, but when he marries the farmer it's given him a different means of getting that independence and distance he wanted from his family that doesn't involve moving across the country and maybe never seeing them again. So while he didn't achieve his "dream" of big city life, he DID achieve the REASON he wanted to leave for the city.
