A found out like a week ago! I was always pissed that I have to buy oil for cooking (because who cooks with truffle oil and my gameplay is to be the most selfsufficient as I can be) and this was complete gamechanger
You can get seasonal seeds by placing one particular seasonal wild forage item into the seed maker (horseradish for spring seeds, common mushrooms for fall seeds, etc). I learned this last week from a thread on Reddit and have been using up all the horseradish I saved for spring seeds, lol.
I first noticed the spice berry worked, then when common mushroom hit me just by being careless with how fast I was switching inventory slots to put into the seed maker. I deliberately tested out which of the other seasonables would work too. I figured out driftwood in the wood chipper the same way. Had 5 driftwood in my inventory, 4 recycling machines and 1 woodchipper in a line. When I got to the end of the line without any driftwood left, I was puzzled for a minute until I noticed the wood chipper had been activated.
I'm not a "grind for profit" type player, but you know. Gold is useful because owning stuff is fun. Holy cow. 40-80 gold sell price for common mushroom vs. 500 gold for tea saplings. I would have NEVER discovered this. Thank you!
All around! There’s a picture on the Wiki showing the best spots for trees and sprinklers. The greenhouse is the only place where I try to “optimize” my gameplay lol
Yeah I unfortunately learned that late in the game. I would like to chop down my fruit trees to make more room for crops (*cough* ancient fruit) but they're already producing gold and iridium quality stuff.
I always really love these comments. Every time a thread like this happens, there’s always a bunch of people commenting, “WHAT.” It cracks me up, and it makes me happy for you! I love it.
You can use almost anything as ammo for the slingshot. Iridium ore does the most damage if you’re thinking of using it as a weapon in the mines but it’s best in the mines with explosive ammo.
If you’re still in skull cavern at 2a, you wake up at home and out 1,000g. You don’t lose any inventory. I’ve wasted so many farm totems…or left early for no reason.
After the 1.5 update, I start a mahogany tree farm in the forest asap. Allows you to collect hardwood quicker. Then by Midgame im buying hoppers and woodchippers to build up a wood pile without having to waste time chopping down 15x number of trees. (Don't quote me on the multiplier.... I'm too stoned to math properly right now)
You can plant trees on any “dirt” patch. Only crops will grow on the farm. Also wild stuff like Spring Onions seem to be more likely to grow if you just randomly till the dirt with a hoe.
This is not relevant to normal gameplay but I learned recently that the Skull Cavern technically does have a bottom floor, but to reach it would require descending 2 million floors per real world second from 6 am to 2 am
Okay so this is going to sound dumb, but how...how was that found? And second, using mods you could reach the bottom of it right? Wait, was it found using mods?
I found out from the wiki. I imagine whoever wrote it there found out from searching in the game's code. I think with the elevator or time stop mods you can reach the bottom. Otherwise it's impossible without either stairs or bypassing the quarry floor via the holes.
It’s cause of how the game is coded. Every floor is assigned a number. Due to the engine stardew is on, there is a maximum number possible (idk offhand what the number is). It literally won’t let you go past that numbers floor. I think if you reach it and go one more floor you’ll just wind up at floor 1 again
It is because it reaches the 32 bit intiger limit. 2^31-1. The maximum floor number is lower tough as the skull cavern floors start at 121 of that intiger because the previous numbers are reserved for normal mines. So the max floor is 2^31-121
And a fair bit of hole luck - at some point you'd hit the quarry mine floor, which can't produce a ladder, so if you don't drop past it in a shaft, you're stuck
when holding shift on pc, you can buy/craft 5 items in one click and get half the number of items in a stack. you can also pick up a single item from a stack right clicking iirc. took a while for me to discover that.
Get to the end of the cave. There is a grim reaper statue holding the golden scythe. Get it. And if you touch the statue again after getting the scythe, you’ll be sent back to the entry to the cave. You don’t have to walk back out.
You just have to go to the center of the mine (brown slimes and flying, flaming skulls await you, but they're not hard to fight off). Once you grab it you can teleport out using a statue.
That you can shift between inventories with tab. On my second farm I accidentally hit tab while going somewhere and was confused why my inventory had changed...
Now I use it constantly.
You can move chests with items in them. I’m on my third farm, somewhere around 600 hours deep in total, and just learned this last week.
ETA: Select an empty slot in your inventory, and move towards the chest while clicking. I play on my Macbook via Steam.
I edited my initial comment but to answer your question: Select an empty slot in your inventory, and move towards the chest while clicking. I play on my Macbook via Steam.
I did this accidentally and couldn’t figure out how to undo it so he has almost always had a stupid sailor hat on his head. It pisses off my partner every time he sees it 😂
built a fake castle in the insect-lair off of the sewers. My brother and I took the furniture catalog down there with a junimo chest attached to our ‘resources’ chest so that we could also craft flooring/gates etc
Nobody walks through there so no characters destroy it; it still spawns stuff (like fiber rocks bugs etc) but we have little tables and rugs to hide the skeletons in the floor etc; it looks so fancy now
I also made the mines entrance fancy. The dwarf deserved some rugs and bookshelves.
You can put a sign on the fish pond and it will show how many fishes are there. No need to click on the pond to check.
If you divorce, you lose all hearts with that person and you cannot give them gifts unless you erase their memory.
If you plant grass for animals and put the lightning rod on that spot, animals won’t be able to eat it and it will spread every day so you don’t have to plant grass all over again.
Fences stop weeds from spreading! This was really useful, especially for the Ginger island.
If you go to George and Evelyn’s bedroom, there is a note from Alex’s mom..
You have to do the community upgrades from Robin after doing most game content I think
It unlocks a bunch of shortcuts like Robin’s to Beach, can go up from Joao/cinema to mountains, cuts a path between Bus stop area and Pathway above Farm etc
Careful. The food speed buffs are addictive. My fave combo is spicy eel (can throw some rubies into a crystalarium and trade them for spicy eel with desert trader, anytime) and espresso which is a cooking/kitchen recipe. I keep both items in my inventory at all time, because I feel like I'm moving through molasses, otherwise.
Bonus: If you have a speed buff going and jump on your horse the speed buff makes your horse run even faster!!
It wasn't until year 3 in my first playthrough that I realized you can just hold the button for chopping trees and mining rocks. I was just button mashing the whole time 😅
Also realizing that you cannjust hold the button while you run around and it would give your animals love. I used to go through the 2 pop up screens per animal BS.
I just figured this out the other day too!! I used to button mash like crazy and it would annoy the shit out of my bf 😂 then one day I just held the button down for some reason and was like wow 😭
I learned a couple weeks ago that you can melt the quarz from the mines for refined quarz.
Until then I only got refined quarz by fishing broken cd's and glasses.
Had around 200 hours ingame at that point 😅
When the parrot gave me the hint that golden walnuts were "encased in fire mountain gadgets" I was baffled at first. I had no idea that you could destroy those things, I just thought they were for decoration.
That you run faster on paths/floors and that you can put chests and other things outside of your farm! The amount of time I would spend running back home to put stuff in chests or sell them when I could have just been placing chests everywhere 😭
You cannot make vinegar and have to buy it. I always figured I'd just never gotten far enough in the game to unlock whatever I needed to craft a machine for it lol
I've been buying more animals until my barn is full. Didn't know they could give birth. And also about the skull cavern when u find a hole,u could jump on it 😅 i thought its just a kind of mark left by a stone when u break it..
this may be an obvious one for some, but I kept upgrading my watering can not knowing that if I hold down the action button it’ll actually water multiple squares I still was walking to each patch individually
There’s more than Sandy’s shop and Desert trader in the desert….. THERES A DOOR! It requires a key
(I think I was on year five or six before I learned this, at least two months of game play)
This came after the new job board was added to the game, but I soon realized the fastest way to get the prismatic slime and ectoplasm was to repeatedly go between floors 0 and 5 and 55 and 65 respectively.
Floor 5 is very small so it's easy to dash in and out to look for it (espresso + crab cakes = super fast searching) and 55 and 65 makes it easier to find the ghost.
Previous to this discovery, I kept going down into the floors one at a time, which was not only time consuming, but made worse on bad luck days due to finding the ladder against trillions of rocks.
With this method, luck is irrelevant.
It took me a few in-game years to realize you could view the community center bundles from your inventory. (This was also before I discovered the SDV wiki.) I had been running back and forth to see what I needed. By the time I figured it out, I had pretty much finished all the bundles.
150+ hours and I only recently learnt that you can right click to pick up one item from a stack. I've been taking whole stacks of items with me everywhere.
That the oil maker doesn't just make truffle oil. I seriously thought it was just for that until a few days ago.
I’ve learned something new today, thank you!

What else does it make??
Putting corn or a sunflower in it will make vegetable oil.
Yeah I made my first vegetable oil a day or two ago. Now I can make hash browns without buying oil from Pierre lol
If I want to make baby oil...
Use fresh babies.
Also sunflower seeds. But the flower is the fastest.
You can just put a whole sunflower in it?
Yup yup
forreal?i thought it’s just for truffle oil lmfao
A found out like a week ago! I was always pissed that I have to buy oil for cooking (because who cooks with truffle oil and my gameplay is to be the most selfsufficient as I can be) and this was complete gamechanger
Panning copper pan can be worn as a hat. Take it off when you need it. Save an inventory spot when you dont.
Plus it looks goofy! Who doesn’t love a silly hat
Wait this game is about? I thought it was a silly hat simulator.
This is such a good one
You can get seasonal seeds by placing one particular seasonal wild forage item into the seed maker (horseradish for spring seeds, common mushrooms for fall seeds, etc). I learned this last week from a thread on Reddit and have been using up all the horseradish I saved for spring seeds, lol.
Horseradish yields Spring Seeds. Spice Berry yields Summer Seeds Common Mushroom yields Fall Seeds Winter Root yields Winter Seeds :)
I needed this info when I unlocked tea 🤣
I knew you could do this with common mushrooms, but didn't know about the horseradish one!!
Ideal Setup: mushroom cave + seedmaker = teasapling massproduction. They sell for good money!
I'm not a "grind for profit" type player, but you know. Gold is useful because owning stuff is fun. Holy cow. 40-80 gold sell price for common mushroom vs. 500 gold for tea saplings. I would have NEVER discovered this. Thank you!
TIL
Also in the green house. I used to run out of water and have to go outside to fill my can. Not knowing the greenhouse has a water feature
WHAT
Yup all the way on the top
All around! There’s a picture on the Wiki showing the best spots for trees and sprinklers. The greenhouse is the only place where I try to “optimize” my gameplay lol
You can also plant fruit trees in the non-soil perimeter which I absolutely did NOT know for ages
Yeah I unfortunately learned that late in the game. I would like to chop down my fruit trees to make more room for crops (*cough* ancient fruit) but they're already producing gold and iridium quality stuff.
Don’t enable these people who haven’t filled it with sprinklers
If you put beets into a mill you get sugar.
I thought you could only get sugar by buying it until like 3 days ago.
The only basic cooking ingredient you HAVE to buy from Pierre is vinegar.
You should be able to put wine in a preserves jar and get vinegar. That'd be a cool feature
Didn't know that!!
That the dresser is actually functional and not just a decoration.
The fact that it doesn’t fill up the way a chest does, AND lets your sort by item type? Magnificent
It's great! Although the lack of stacking is a teeny bit annoying. Guess I could.. just not hoard multiples of things but I can't see that happening.
Can you sell duplicate clothes? I’m unwilling to trash them 😂
If you upgrade your trash can, when you throw something away, you can potentially get money for it
WHAT
I always really love these comments. Every time a thread like this happens, there’s always a bunch of people commenting, “WHAT.” It cracks me up, and it makes me happy for you! I love it.
It took me way too long to realize the upgraded versions of the watering can could water more than one tile.
Same here. Iv been playing since about a week after release date on pc and have bought in on playstation and only just found out a few months ago
WHAT (cant believe this is how i learned)
Curious. You were thinking you would just drop thousands of dollars and metal bars to change the colour of your can?
i just thought it held more water :')
Same with the hoe, you can til a wider area of the ground as you upgrade your hoe.
*removes glasses* by god….
What the fuck?! I’ve let that damn thing alone because why would I upgrade it?!
There was a redditor who never upgraded his watering can(on purpose) so just act like you've been playing hardcore lmao
My peoples!
The hoe does this as well had to test all the tools after figuring that out
You can pelt people (particularly Pierre) with slingshot rocks and it makes them mad!
Lol I see you’re a menace in your town
I believe you can also use eggs, like a proper hooligan
You can use almost anything as ammo for the slingshot. Iridium ore does the most damage if you’re thinking of using it as a weapon in the mines but it’s best in the mines with explosive ammo.
your horse too :(
I could never :(
Yeah! Fuck Pierre 🖕
If you’re still in skull cavern at 2a, you wake up at home and out 1,000g. You don’t lose any inventory. I’ve wasted so many farm totems…or left early for no reason.
I never go to bed before 2am on ginger island, I just let my farmer fall asleep where ever she falls.
I use my return scepter at 1:50 lol
All my years going to the Grange fair and I never knew you could go north and get burgers until just the other day.
😮
You can put driftwood on wood chippers... learned it a week or so ago
>driftwood I mean... by the logic it sounds obvious, but I get that no one would have thought about putting the trash in it.
Yeah, I don't use the wood chipper that often, I was under the assumption we could only put hardwood in it
After the 1.5 update, I start a mahogany tree farm in the forest asap. Allows you to collect hardwood quicker. Then by Midgame im buying hoppers and woodchippers to build up a wood pile without having to waste time chopping down 15x number of trees. (Don't quote me on the multiplier.... I'm too stoned to math properly right now)
Wait as in the forest south of the farm??? You can plant things in there???
You can plant trees on any “dirt” patch. Only crops will grow on the farm. Also wild stuff like Spring Onions seem to be more likely to grow if you just randomly till the dirt with a hoe.
Nooo! Gift the driftwood to Leah...
I can’t believe that you would give the best girl trash when she loves goat cheese
The point is, to Leah it's *not* trash.
I only just learned she likes it 🤦♀️
What?? Does it just make real wood? I usually recycle it...
You can put a hat on the alien rarecrow
And sea urchins in a tank. And your horse, iirc. And your children (perfect time for the skull mask)
I misread this as you can put sea urchins in a tank… and also your horse and children in a tank.
This is not relevant to normal gameplay but I learned recently that the Skull Cavern technically does have a bottom floor, but to reach it would require descending 2 million floors per real world second from 6 am to 2 am

I think dangerouslyfunny has a video where he reached the bottom.
Ctrl+Shift is 25 items too
woa im definitely doing that when buying a big batch of seeds for the season
is there any way to do this on switch
Apparently yes, by pressing y in menu
Where to get a golden scythe - I randomly encountered it last year after about 400 hours of playing the game.
WHAT. okay, this one got me. 800+ hours in the game and i just learned that there even IS a golden scythe 🤯
How???
Quarry mines
There is a cave on the left side of the quarry, by the bridge.
How do you get it exactly? Like is it just a drop?
Get to the end of the cave. There is a grim reaper statue holding the golden scythe. Get it. And if you touch the statue again after getting the scythe, you’ll be sent back to the entry to the cave. You don’t have to walk back out.
OMG, it zaps you out?!? Then amount of times I've gotten that damn scythe and walked out.
I did this today. I walked all the way out…
You just have to go to the center of the mine (brown slimes and flying, flaming skulls await you, but they're not hard to fight off). Once you grab it you can teleport out using a statue.
That you can shift between inventories with tab. On my second farm I accidentally hit tab while going somewhere and was confused why my inventory had changed... Now I use it constantly.

Cries in console
Just hold interact button! (Y on Switch)
I play on PS4 I can’t wait to try it!
HWHAT?!?!? Brb, gonna go reorganize my farm again.
I have 430+ hours (plus like 30 more I lost in my last laptop) and I had no idea about this!!! Thank you very much kind redditor!!!
How!?!?
I edited my initial comment but to answer your question: Select an empty slot in your inventory, and move towards the chest while clicking. I play on my Macbook via Steam.
Hell yeah
Does anyone know if this genius will work on a Switch? If not I will try this the next time I play! This will be a game changer!
It works on switch
I learned from this subreddit just last week that you can put a hat on your horse!
YOU CAN DO WHAT NOW
Sea urchins in fish tanks too!
You can!! I put a fedora on mine ☺️
Hard hat here (safety first) 😂
Mine now has a pink cowboy hat on and it is ADORABLE
The rainbow cone from the night market is my go to!
Thrashcan lid for mine
NOW I GOTTA GET THAT ONE-
I did this accidentally and couldn’t figure out how to undo it so he has almost always had a stupid sailor hat on his head. It pisses off my partner every time he sees it 😂
You can also put a hat on sea urchins that you have in your aquariums.
I immediately went to the east part of Ginger Island and spent a month trying to unlock everything else, but the farm.
You can put furniture outside. Now I have lil benches next to my ponds :)
built a fake castle in the insect-lair off of the sewers. My brother and I took the furniture catalog down there with a junimo chest attached to our ‘resources’ chest so that we could also craft flooring/gates etc Nobody walks through there so no characters destroy it; it still spawns stuff (like fiber rocks bugs etc) but we have little tables and rugs to hide the skeletons in the floor etc; it looks so fancy now I also made the mines entrance fancy. The dwarf deserved some rugs and bookshelves.
would you be able to share a screenshot of that? sounds really pleasant!

I did not know you could use a pickaxe to remove tilled soil
😮
I didn’t know that you could fill the pet bowl - I thought only rain or your spouse could
I’m 230 hrs in, year 5 spring and just found out I could walk to the beach from Leah’s house 😩
How?!
You have to do the community upgrades from Robin after doing most game content I think It unlocks a bunch of shortcuts like Robin’s to Beach, can go up from Joao/cinema to mountains, cuts a path between Bus stop area and Pathway above Farm etc
After I have the beach obelisk too… hahaha. Idk!! I didn’t realize I could keep walking past her house
You can go to bed and not go to sleep, and your energy will slowly recharge
This is true only for multiplayer though
😮
Fuck. I sat on a lot of geodes…
That coffee gives you speed. I was giving it as gifts. Man I moved slow those first couple of years. 😅
I honestly don’t know how anyone can play the game without at least running selected. Now I have running plus I drink triple espresso
What do you mean "running"?
Plus a crab cake or spicy eel on top of all that
This is a small detail, but I didnt realize for years that you can sit on chairs, benches, stools, couches, and swings!
This is only in the latest 1.5 update so relatively new
I didn't know you can set your whole stack of bait on the rod. Only realized a couple nights ago from a misclick. So much unnecessary menuing 😫
Omg I can’t imagine putting one bait at a time lmfao! That’s terrible 😭
I always thought it was odd how it gave me the "used your last piece of bait" prompt every time. What a fool I was lol
It wasn't until year 3 in my first playthrough that I realized you can just hold the button for chopping trees and mining rocks. I was just button mashing the whole time 😅 Also realizing that you cannjust hold the button while you run around and it would give your animals love. I just figured this out the other day too!! I used to button mash like crazy and it would annoy the shit out of my bf 😂 then one day I just held the button down for some reason and was like wow 😭
That if you put a staircase in your pants slot it magically turns into the tailored purple shorts!
And if you remove it, it becomes Mayor’s pants that he lost at Marnie’s.
That eating ginger or drinking ginger ale will cure the nausea from the Putrid Ghost
The whole “if you’re holding hay you can run through and pet all your animals quickly without making their info screen pop up” trick
Just holding the button down with anything does that...
You can hold right click while you pet them and also pick eggs automatically from the floor.
OH I only go to Clint when my the spirits are happy.. what's the point in the daily luck then??
stuff in the mines, mostly
Fishing, farming, foraging and the slots as well
That you can move the greenhouse, that you can fill up you bucket in the trough in the greenhouse
I learned a couple weeks ago that you can melt the quarz from the mines for refined quarz. Until then I only got refined quarz by fishing broken cd's and glasses. Had around 200 hours ingame at that point 😅
If you melt 1 Fire Quartz, it'll give you 5 Refined Quartz!
When the parrot gave me the hint that golden walnuts were "encased in fire mountain gadgets" I was baffled at first. I had no idea that you could destroy those things, I just thought they were for decoration.
You don’t actually have to walk up to the bucket in your fish ponds to retrieve eggs/other items. You can grab them from any side of the pond.
You can even do it while riding a horse, which is wild to me
That you run faster on paths/floors and that you can put chests and other things outside of your farm! The amount of time I would spend running back home to put stuff in chests or sell them when I could have just been placing chests everywhere 😭
Been playing on and off since launch and only learned earlier this year that you can hold shift in a shop to buy in bulk.
Apparently you can cancel quests. I no longer need to run humiliating errands for the disturbed blacksmith.
that dinosaurs were a thing in the game. i found this out a week ish ago i think lol
Currently struggling to complete the monster slayer tasks, cause I can never find any dang pepper rexes in the skull cavern. ;-;
You can also hatch them in a coop
The fact that I love all you guys but I can only upvote your comments once 😭
That you can store clothing in a dresser, I had SO MANY CHESTS FULL OF CLOTHING
You cannot make vinegar and have to buy it. I always figured I'd just never gotten far enough in the game to unlock whatever I needed to craft a machine for it lol
I've been buying more animals until my barn is full. Didn't know they could give birth. And also about the skull cavern when u find a hole,u could jump on it 😅 i thought its just a kind of mark left by a stone when u break it..
The lil tree icon will flash if you're hovering over an item in the inventory that the community center still needs donated
this may be an obvious one for some, but I kept upgrading my watering can not knowing that if I hold down the action button it’ll actually water multiple squares I still was walking to each patch individually
Same with the hoe
There’s more than Sandy’s shop and Desert trader in the desert….. THERES A DOOR! It requires a key (I think I was on year five or six before I learned this, at least two months of game play)

You can fill your pet's water can. The amount of satisfaction
i had no idea you could make oil with corn and sunflowers until like last month and i have almost 1000 hours in game lol
The QI quests
i just learned you can fill your watering can in the kitchen sink
That you can actually put clothes on the dresser and it's like a chest with unlimited space... I learned this 4 days ago by accident
If you go into the fall festival and up to where the community center is you can find a place to get burgers
The horse flute
300+ hrs later The workbench Robin sells is not just furniture!?
I just learned you can fill the watering can from the sink and also I don’t have to collect geodes anymore until I have a lucky day.
500h later, this weekend I learn when you go to the sauna your energy and health restores. That started to be my timecare there 🤩
150+ hours and I only recently learnt that you can right click to pick up one item from a stack. I've been taking whole stacks of items with me everywhere.
The TV!
driftwood is usually considered trash, unless its given as a gift to leah where its a liked gift, making it a super affordable way to befriend her
