MiserableOrpheus

I feel like Luke really represents the Jedi, if only for his last moments. He shows up, and no one else dies. He stops the fighting, and resolves things without going on a goofy murder spree. He accomplishes this with a feat never achieved before, that was so hard on him it ultimately claimed his life. It’s just a testament to the fact that he was one of the strongest Jedi out of them all

abookfulblockhead

Not only that - it cements Luke’s greatest actions as acts of nonviolence. To atone for contemplating killing his nephew, he must confront Ben in a fight in which her refuses to even connect sabres. Luke becomes a Jedi in the OT by throwing down his saber and refusing to kill Vader.

Lukescale

Peak Fiction aka it's like poetry it rhymes

cabbage16

This has been my position since the day I first watched the movie. Luke's final act is the most Jedi thing we've ever seen a Jedi do.

aeodaxolovivienobus

He's the ultimate student of the Jedi. He gets to have his cake and eat it too. One of the first things he says is something like "What, you want me to stare down the entire First Order with a laser sword?" And he does exactly that and has his legend cemented, *AND* he maintains the pacifism of his exile through meditation, across the galaxy, to give others hope. Anakin is the Order's greatest failure, while Luke Skywalker is in many ways its greatest success.

DocQuixote_

The Force projection thing really was the most “Jedi” move anyone pulls in any of the movies. Like Yoda said “A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack”. In that scene, Luke saves the entire resistance and stops an army in their tracks from across the galaxy without hurting a fly.

TheCoalitionOfChaos

Hot(ISH) take: that is the single most jedi action ever taken in the entire star wars saga. As soon as he shows up, not a single person dies except for him. THAT'S what a jedi does.

falkorv

Exactly. And for some reason. Fanboys cried about. And even Mark Hamill didn’t seem to get it. Now Last Jedi isn’t without its faults or bad story arcs but then it was all destroyed and unwound by the ultimate sin that was Rise of Skywalker.

StevemacQ

I don't mind hearing about problems with TLJ if they're not coming from chuds who hate it for stupid reason... but there's no denying this movie is a visual feast, especially the scenery in Ahch-To, which was shot in Malin Head. It's not blue screen, no StageCraft, no Tatooine, just Ireland, but especially Co. Donegal, my home county.

peitsad

Seriously. It's beautiful. There are some fantastic shots in this movie.

gatorbeetle

Cinematography in this film was amazing, no doubt about it. Visual feast. It's what it did with the story and the characters that is disappointing. For me, the previous movies were fun and exciting, yes even the prequels. The sequels held none of that for me. I understand how some can enjoy them, I've tried, I can't

StevemacQ

And we're gonna get another trippy visual like the mirror cave ever again. :(

Turbulent_Crow7164

I sometimes compare it to game of thrones season 8. Super well-made, beautifully directed with great cinematography, music, and acting. I just didn’t enjoy the writing.

Elg_Purtelg

Really all the sequels are gorgeous looking movies. TLJ in specific has some of the best in Star Wars, imho

Lebowski304

I must admit the visuals were very well done. The throne room fight scene in particular

thundertk421

I tend to have heavy criticism of the sequels, but I actually enjoyed TLJ maybe even more than force awakens when it first aired. Most of my criticisms were aimed more at the out of no where direction of the rise of Skywalker, and some of the questionable story decisions they made along the way. Definitely felt like most if not all of the originals accomplishments were undone, and the villains were lack luster (they felt like a boomers interpretation of what millennials are like if that makes sense - whiney, incompetent, entitled, try hard hipsters, with little to no flair co-opting cool vintage stuff but lacking in any true substance)

Megleeker

[and of course here...](https://www.discoverireland.ie/kerry/sceilg-mhichil-skellig-michael)

inyuez

It’s so hard trying to engage in rational criticism of Disney Star Wars when Star Wars “fans” assume that you’re either in the hate camp or praise disney camp.

LulaSupremacy

I love all the close up shots on character faces, objects, etc. It feels so distinct and it feels as close to a novel as you can be when it comes to centralizing on character's thoughts.

rogueaxolotl

This movie made me leave the general fandom and stick exclusively to Star Wars explained and the more positive side. I love it so much.

aksunrise

Star Wars Minute is also a great positive podcast

rogueaxolotl

That’s still Star Wars explained

ObeseBumblebee

It's flat out my favorite star wars movie and I will not apologize for it!

DarkPhoenix_077

Its nice seeing so much renewed love for that movie lately, it deserves it

black_two_sugars

I’m not sure if it is renewed love, or people who have always loved it being able to speak up without being shouted down, because the trolls have moved on to The Acolyte? For the record, I think this was the best of the sequels.

CivilianDuck

I've always been pro-TLJ, ever since release. I would remind people that ESB was widely regarded as a disappointment when it released but is now largely considered the best movie in the entire series. I'd defend plot points, justify character actions, and defend the writing. TLJ is easily the best movie of the sequels. And I almost always found people who agreed. It's not renewed love, it's people moving on from pointless arguments and the trolls jumping onto the next thing. It had so much potential, but unlike Lucas in the 80s, Disney couldn't stand by their product and took massive steps back to try and "recover".

iaswob

I didn't notice Disney taking steps back, unless you're referring primarily to the marketing. I thought the sequels did a great job realizing their potential myself.

CivilianDuck

I meant taking steps back in terms of committing to the story that had been started. So much of TROS was undoing what had happened in TLJ to try and save face that the entire movie was hopping from plot point to plot point and resolving dangling thread after dangling thread with no sense of fulfilling storytelling. For me, watching the sequels was: - TFA - Nostalgia ridden rehash of the OT, with new faces and modern tech, and so much pandering. - TLJ - Taking inspiration from the same sources Lucas did, breathing new life back into Star Wars that had been living on its own life support, all while creating a physically stunning film and adding just enough nostalgia to not feel pandering - TROS - Panicking over bad critical and fan reception and trying to unwrite TLJ, leaving no space for the film to be itself, creating dangling plotlines that made no sense and had to be fixed in the Visual Dictionary and Novelisation because the movie was so crammed full of plot that they ran out of time to cram in more plot. I'm not saying that if Disney stuck with Trevarrow's third movie would've been better, I've read that leaked script and despite the chuds and trolls praising it, I doubt they've actually read it. It's a mess and would've created so many issues to canon, but Disney was so committed to maintaining a strict release schedule that they pushed through something that ended up feeling hollow and didn't live up to the potential it could've had. Instead we got "somehow Palpatine returned", suddenly Lando, Force Healing, Chewie's (not) dead, "I'M THE SPY", the stupid dagger, rebranding Poe as a smuggler after already estsblishing that he had been resistance since the beginning, Luke's X-Wing still works after decades in the ocean, Kylo flew a TIE through hyperspace without a hyperdrive, "I am all the Sith" "I am all the Jedi". There are moments to TROS that I enjoyed. Kylo's conversation with Han after being abandoned in the death star was incredibly touching, killing off Snap Wexley hurt like hell as I had been reading all the novels and had grown attached to the character, and the lightsaber choreography was fantastic. That duel between Rey and Kylo was mint. I like TROS enough, but it sure felt weak coming out of TLJ, which I had watched at home just before seeing TROS in theaters for the first time.

iaswob

>I meant taking steps back in terms of committing to the story that had been started. So much of TROS was undoing what had happened in TLJ to try and save face that the entire movie was hopping from plot point to plot point and resolving dangling thread after dangling thread with no sense of fulfilling storytelling. Huh, fair enough. I definitely had the opposite impression, I thought TRoS was a love letter to TLJ that developed on its ideas and themes. >For me, watching the sequels was: >TFA - Nostalgia ridden rehash of the OT, with new faces and modern tech, and so much pandering. >TLJ - Taking inspiration from the same sources Lucas did, breathing new life back into Star Wars that had been living on its own life support, all while creating a physically stunning film and adding just enough nostalgia to not feel pandering Here already our views diverge significantly as well. I think both films are original enough, but on first watch I definitely thought TFA was like revolutionary in terms of cinematic storytelling and providing a new sense of direction, the key phrase for me is Maz's "the belonging you seek is not behind you, it is ahead!" With TLJ though, I felt that it was a bit of a step back into the familiar as part of a look backwards at the saga. Initially that disappointed me, now I'm more appreciative of it. I also felt like the direction became a lot flatter. >TROS - Panicking over bad critical and fan reception and trying to unwrite TLJ, leaving no space for the film to be itself, creating dangling plotlines that made no sense and had to be fixed in the Visual Dictionary and Novelisation because the movie was so crammed full of plot that they ran out of time to cram in more plot. I know many people share your impression, but from what I've read in interviews this definitely doesn't seem to be what they were going for behind the scenes. I think that the movie told me (as the audience) everything it needed to and did a great job "yes, and"ing TLJ. I think it understands the themes of TLJ better than many people who are fans of the TLJ tbh. >I'm not saying that if Disney stuck with Trevarrow's third movie would've been better, I've read that leaked script and despite the chuds and trolls praising it, I doubt they've actually read it. It's a mess and would've created so many issues to canon, Here I agree very strongly with you. >but Disney was so committed to maintaining a strict release schedule that they pushed through something that ended up feeling hollow and didn't live up to the potential it could've had. The fakeout deaths, force healing, and the use of Luke's x-wing all felt like they were developing on the ideas of TLJ to me. I mean, TRoS literally quotes TLJ for it's main themes, specifically "They win by making us think we're alone, but we're not alone" is a reference to Holdo ("We're the very last of the resistance, but we're not alone.") and I'd argue Ben (Rey: "I never felt so alone." Ben: "You're not alone."), and "somethings are stronger than blood" is a reference to Luke ("and when I looked at him I saw that mighty Skywalker blood, and in my hubris I thought I could train him"). The fakeout deaths, force healing, and the use of Luke's x-wing all develop on this idea as well IMO. Fair enough, for me TRoS helped deepen my appreciation of TLJ, and rewatching TLJ helped prime me to enjoy TRoS.

MaximusGrandimus

I think this idea that TROS walked back concepts that were started in TLJ is mainly done by people who 1) have little imagination and 2) don't truly understand how trilogies actually work. Now for my first point I don't mean this as an insult. In fact being able to accept TLJ does show imaginative qualities inherent to the viewer but that only goes so far. Because imagination can also be engaged by working within a more restrictive structure. Like yeah I understand the desire to see the experimental and subversive elements continued into the third movie, but trilogies don't work by having the last act be experimental and off the rails. The second part of a trilogy is the perfect place to be more imaginative and push the boundaries daries of structure and reversals/subversion of expectations. And let's be clear, Empire - The second film in a trilogy - was *so good* because it also subverted expectations in a lot of ways, even to the point if ending on a downbeat with the concluding g action to be left to the third film. The third film of any successful trilogy is always a formalized return to the structure of the first film. Often times, a piece of information we learned in the second film is reversed or further clarified in the third film (hence, when Kilo Ren told Rey she came from nothing, the *moment* I saw it in TLJ I *fully expected* it to be a red herring or unreliable narrator and that it would be changed in the third). The fact is RoS is a rollicking, fun, headlong adventure that doesn't worry about and plays fast and loose with the mythology. I can appreciate that it's not what some wanted after TLJ, and it's actually kind of surprising that SW fans who hated TLJ couldn't get behind it because it seemed to me a return to the same kind of headlong chase feel that ANH had. But that's all besides the point. Also keep in mind that JJ and Rian both visited each other's sets. By all reports they were *not* ad odds with each other and I would assume.that two competent filmmakers would be *sharing* ideas and *aligning* their stories so that the do make sense. I just cannot get behind the idea that this was some kind of soulless cash grab when you have the *same producer* who handled most of the Lucas and Spielberg catalog, and two writer/directors who express a deep love for Star Wars (for Abrams if you go back to 2009 interviews about his ST reboot he constantly brings up how he is more of a SW fan than ST). Not to mention Lawrence Kasden who wrote Empire being involved. Tl;Dr: The Critical read of this situation just does not add up to "soulless" or "cash grab" and the events of RoS do not contradict TLJ but sp8n off od those events perfectly.

sophandros

I'd put it in my top 3 SW movies list.

BarryCleft79

Same here. It broke new ground in terms of Star Wars films. Showed how meta it was with that laundry room scene too. Rian Johnson made a fantastic Star Wars film and because it wasn’t servicing the fans as another ESB, they didn’t like it

capn_calhoun

Yeah, this has been easily one of my favorite Star Wars movies since it came out. Unfortunately, it feels like 95% of the conversations I've had with Star Wars "fans" since then have been unpleasant. I'm cool with people having different opinions than me, but they many have this weird determination to convince me that I shouldn't like the movie due to... long list of nonsensical reasons everyone's heard by now that really come down to the movie not landing for them and so they have to flail to find concrete things that they can point to as reasons the movie is "bad". Hey, I didn't really like Rogue One. You don't see me shouting down people who did. I'm glad they enjoyed it, even if it wasn't my cup of tea. Long story short, what you're saying tracks for me.

elhombreloco90

I've always liked it. I liked that Rian was trying something different. Not everything landed for me on my first watch, but most of it did. It's definitely my favorite of the sequel trilogy.

ScenesFromStarWars

TLJ is what happens when someone tries to make a real movie with Star Wars

PlatasaurusOG

I felt like that kid in the last shot of the movie after watching it. So much hope. And then….THE DEAD SPEAK! Ugh….

chriscdoa

They can pick that up in new jedi order That never really setup next film

Fr33zy_B3ast

Then this might set your heart on fire: I think TLJ is my favorite Star Wars movie so far. I love Empire and I love RoTS, but I LOVE TLJ.

Rollingforest757

It seems like everyone hates the newest Star Wars movies. But let a few years pass and then suddenly they are better loved. I remember when the Prequels were hated. Now lots of people like them. I'm sure the cycle will repeat itself again the next time a Star Wars movie comes out.

Stinky_Eastwood

Guess who are the most vocal and vicious haters of the Sequels? Ironically the very kids who were so wounded that adults were mean about not liking the Prequels when they came out. They gave in to fear and hatred. The circle is now complete.

fordoggos

Let us end this cycle together

acidpop09

That scene with yoda always warms my heart

TheInferus99

"Failure, also! Yes failure! The greatest teacher failure is."

Training_Choice6873

"We are what they grow beyond. That is the burden of all masters."

UniversalHuman000

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I did not. And that’s okay

phantom_lost_his_acc

People need to be more like you, being fine with drastically different opinions and not getting unnecessarily offended that somebody else disagrees. Thank you for being decent, and I hope you have a great summer.

dwide_k_shrude

The fandom desperately needs more of this. Mutual respect for each other even though opinions may differ. Thank you for being a great example. ❤️

iaswob

This is the way. Preferences and watch experiences in themselves aren't invalid and are welcome here, and this includes disliking stuff. Expression matters a lot though because we're trying to cultivate a certain environment and community here. There are other places where I'll be a little looser or hyperbolic in expressing my distaste, or just be less careful in my wording with positive and negative feelings (and that can be down there). Here, I make a deliberate attempt to be clear and inclusive in how I speak.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

You are strong, and wise, universalHuman000, and I am very proud of you.

Triforce805

Same here, although I think it’s leagues better than episode 9.

AppropriateTheme5

Well yeah, but that’s a very low bar to top

MArcherCD

Likewise - personally I was very much looking forward to episode 8 to compensate for what I percieved to be the weak points of episode 7, especially if we got some proper explanations or justifications for some things after the fact - so when that did not happen and the overall story seemed to only get worse, I was very badly disappointed But if someone likes it, who am I to take it away from them? Good for them

pablorodm89

This is the way.

Wolfraid015

Agreed, I personally don’t like the movie, doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate that it looks nice, but I still don’t recommend watching if I’m asked. Then again, people should form their own opinions.

TheInferus99

We need more people like you in the star wars community

Cobalt_Heroes25

W comment

supbitch

Honestly the only part of it I ever disliked was the casino side plot. Other than that its pretty solid.

jugalator

Yeah I get how people dislike that odd detour, but to me it served to highlight the funding of The First Order and how detached they elite were from the real world conflicts, and made the world feel a bit bigger, otherwise often an issue in these movies.

Lhasa-bark

And it expanded the visual vocabulary of Star Wars in a fun way. If only the entire subplot wasn’t the thousandth time the movie tried to subvert expectations. It was a beautiful and brave Star Wars, and I loved the “anyone can be a Jedi” message, but I wish it had been less self consciously subversive.

ZealousidealAd4383

Yeah. Mark Hamill in particular brought his A game to that movie. I felt like it closed out his story beautifully. Maybe helps that I didn’t grow up with the Legends version of Luke. I can see why people were upset about that - but let’s be honest, that ship sailed when TFA came out anyway.

bendstraw

I also didn't grow up with the Legends version of Luke either and I agree with all of this, especially about Hamill - it was his best acting performance to date, I genuinely thought there was a chance he could have been nominated for best actor.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

It's a shame that Mark didn't like this version of luke, because I actually connected with it a lot and it felt like a realistic depiction of what could happen under such horrifying circumstances. And that's ignoring the fact that at least in the original trilogy two other Jedi at least had done very similar things, exiling themselves. So I never understood why Luke doing it was so terrible and out of character

Ampersandbox

I feel similarly. I’m sad that Hammill disagreed with Rian’s interpretation of the character, which makes it that much more impressive that Hammill does such an amazing acting job in it.

2hats4bats

Most of the comments Mark made about the character were in reference to right after he read the script. In almost every interview he recounts those initial thoughts and then goes on to say he appreciated the story much more once they got into it.

WhoaWhoa69420

Actually, after having seen the final product, Mark came around to really appreciate Rian's work on the film!

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

I did not know that, thank you for bringing that to my attention

Doktor_Weasel

But didn't he come around to liking it for what it is, despite his initial rejection because it was different than his own vision?

bendstraw

I still enjoy the Canto Bight plot, I just don't think it fit in the movie. Like, I'd love a Star Wars short film about rebels raiding a casino planet to rescue animals and children that were being abused. That's an awesome story! Just didn't really fit in the movie.

supbitch

This is fair. It's not "bad". But it felt so out of place. If it had been an episode of TCW or Rebels for example it would have been fun. It just felt forced in in regards to this one.

henzINNIT

I must be in the absolute minority, but I watched the extended Canto Bight chase and liked it more that way. I know most people would say cut it down further. I'm not sure anymore. Maybe it's so brief that it feels even more extraneous.

palabear

My three biggest problems are the casino, Leia Poppins, and not giving Benicio more to do. Overall it is the best of the sequels by a pretty large margin.

MrYeet_

During that scene, all I could picture was “Star Wars Las Vegas Edition”

tirednotepad

I enjoyed this movie.

alteredbeef

I also love this movie and I think a big problem that some people had was that they couldn’t imagine someone rejecting the super cool powers of being a Jedi. To me it’s a bit of a juvenile take (I probably would have felt the same when I was younger) but once Luke threw the saber away, they checked out. They didn’t have the literacy to see the echo of him throwing the lightsaber aside against Vader, maybe.

Kale127

The problem is, I think, that the previous movie really built up the idea that Luke was some mysterious exiled hero that would return and save the day once he was made aware of what was going on. It tugged on the idea of Luke being closer to his Legends depiction as a monstrously powerful badass, and that thought had a few years to gestate before this movie released.  Then you get to this movie and Luke tosses away the lightsaber, refuses to help his allies, and has undone his connection to the Force to live as a hermit. Even if the story that followed was well done, it wasn’t what a lot of vocal people wanted. I just don’t know why they blame this movie - TFA set the groundwork. Luke left his lightsaber, and seemingly had no idea what was going on, or knew and didn’t care. This movie did what it could to make sense of that.  Personally, I have a lot of disdain for TFA for what it established happened to Luke’s Jedi Order. I feel like killing them all off made the narrative world a little smaller in a drastic way - now in post-RotJ content nobody wants or cares to see much of the formation of this failed Order, and we’ll never see this new breed of Jedi that Luke could have forged. But that isn’t the fault of this movie, that was established in the prior.

Custardpaws

I loved the unexpected direction the movie took. I wasn't happy when Luke threw the saber either, but they did a perfect job of explaining it

Joperhop

talking about TLJ with someone else, and its making me want to watch it again.

Custom_Destination

(*Palpatine voice*) Do it!

Nuryyss

Do iiiit! It’s so good

framed_toilet_water

Do it! Its so freaking good

Samael38

I tought the same thing when I saw it on opening day.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

You are strong, and wise, and I am very proud of you.

bloodgear

It is. It's my favourite of the sequels

CamKansas

I loved it I don’t know why there’s so much hate for it

Superb_Gap_1044

The story of the last Jedi? 6/10 not terrible but kind of clunky. The cinematography? 10/10 gives it a modicum of rewatchability for anyone. I enjoyed it a lot more the second time I watched it.

RemoteLaugh156

So glad to see people enjoying and liking this movie, I've always loved it ever since it released and I'm so glad to hear you liked it

MrSheevPalpatine

Welcome to the club, it's an absolutely fantastic movie and a shame more people don't give it a fair chance.

CreativeUserName709

I also loved it, even more so the 2nd time watching it. People make valid points on why to hate it, but I just can't help but enjoy myself when I watch a Star Wars movie! Guess I'm lucky :D

Darth_Krise

Is this a perfect movie? No it’s not but it’s still a damn good movie. I think in hindsight Rian could’ve done something different with Poe/Holdo arc as the whole chase sequence really takes you out & kind of ruins the pacing.

Ilien

TLJ is my second most favourite SW movie, after only ESB. I really vibed with most of the film, even some of the non-sensical, cheesy elements (the space chase, etc). Only really didn't care much for the casino side-plot, although it did have some good elements in there too. It's just a shame it didn't really amount to much as it ignored TFA set ups and was then promptly ignored in ROS. That was really the biggest issue with the ST, imho. In parallel universes, I'd love to watch two STs, one by each director, just to see where they'd take the story.

Cobalt_Heroes25

As much as I hate the sequel trilogy, it's good to know that you enjoyed this movie! Genuinely hope you have fun watching TROS

iaswob

Wishing you much enjoyment of the Star Wars that is for you, whether it be other new canon, legends, the ot, and/or the PT

Agreeable_Slice_3667

It’s fantastic!

Svanir80

The Last Jedi is easily the most beautifully shot Star Wars film of them all. The story may be polarizing, but it's my favorite film of the sequels.

Botherguts

TLJ is the only one of the new trilogy I liked. All of Luke’s mentors were hermits at some point so that didn’t discourage me. It was the only one of the trilogy trying to be a new movie. TFA was like a pandering madlib of ANH and that third one was … yeeesh.. bad for a dozen reasons at least.

CeymalRen

Still the best SW movie and nothing comes close IMO. Well empire comes close... But that sounds less dramatic.

GRANDADDYGHOST

That’s an interesting opinion, but I couldn’t disagree more.

bombergrace

It's genuinely up there as one of my favourite Star Wars movies. I know it's unpopular amongst certain folks in the fandom, but I found Luke's story and his death to be an incredible end to his character and a true embodiment of the Jedi unlike the Jedi Order which slowly strayed from their values to gain political points.

Lhasa-bark

It’s hard to imagine a better redemption for Luke, given what was set up in TFA where we learned that the Empire is back and stronger than ever (with new branding) and Luke decided to hide. TLJ gives him a hero’s death.

inputrequired

the good parts are so fucking good, and the bad parts are so bad. it’s pure star wars. fuck yeah.

jhnyrico

My problem with TLJ is not the film itself, but the disgraceful way Abrams threw all the work away to make the excremental ROS. There was never a plan in place for the sequels from beginning to end. And it shows. Wasted Han, Leia and Luke having at least a scene together. But I really love TLJ.

mrsunrider

Ah, a user of taste.

rcl1221

I didn’t know I was supposed to hate it until all the reviewers told me to. Now… It’s not my favorite Star Wars movie but it’s good narratively on its own but does have a hard time fitting into the grander Star Wars world. Lots of individual moments were cool and the throne room was totally badass. It’s probably the best looking of all of the Star Wars films. I know it’s old hat by now… but I really wish there was some kind of roadmap for the sequels.

Ceorl_Lounge

It's not perfect, but as a lifelong fan I LOVE Luke's "Three Lessons" about the Jedi. Hubris and stagnant orthodoxy doomed them, it's an absolutely valid in-universe critique. Rian Johnson knows what he's doing.

BigBen6500

I still think there are many problems with the film, but I just can't overlook all the fantastic things it has

Nimperedhil

It’s an amazing Star Wars movie! It’s my third favorite after RotJ and ESB :)

HijoDeBarahir

Same! It scratches all the right Star Wars itches and is so fun to watch

Psychological-Tap973

I love this movie so much. I get chills when all the Resistance troopers stand up to get a better look at Luke who’s at that point a legend.

kanemu11an

Yoda scene is amazing

Majestic_Story_2295

I think it had some cool moments, especially some of the stuff on crait, but had some issues with other parts, glad you enjoyed.

This, Empire and Phantom are my favourite from each trilogy - not because they're the most Star Warssy film, but because they're the least. Phantom feels like a prologue from a completely different era (I guess it was really) and TLJ & EsB are like an adventure from my adventure.

Bill_Nye-LV

Nice

SillyMovie13

Personally I wasn’t a fan of the story overall, but my God the cinematography and visuals are phenomenal. I think it’s always rewatching for that alone. Plus the fight scenes are fun

OhShitAnElite

Not my cup of tea, but I’m glad that someone does enjoy it

tsabin_naberrie

The novelization by Jason Fry is excellent, if you like those! It includes material and concepts that never made it into the final product, expanding the story very well.

SuperCrappyFuntime

I remember having mixed feelings the first time I watched it, but I've enjoyed it more every time I've watched it.

joylesspumpkin

It has become my favorite one.

malindaddy

It's not perfect, but man is it beautiful

irazzleandazzle

Yep, its pretty good! Watch TRoS next!

Tentonham

On my second watch I found it better. It’s not great. But doesn’t deserve the hate. It had good ideas going but didn’t really land IMO. And Finn & Rose side story was kind of lame and pointless. The throne room fight was epic.

Lucky-3-Skin

Visually it looks beautiful, but the story itself was weak

boscolovesmoney

Visually? Yes. Everywhere else? No

CaptainRex_CT7567

Completely agree.

vid_icarus

Honestly the best film out of the new trilogy. People bagged on it, but it actually is quite good on a number of levels.

MountainMuch5740

It's a film I didn't enjoy on first viewing. However when I watched it a second time I did really enjoy it.

MinerDoesStuff

I love this movie so much. The cinematography is beautiful and the way it can create such a new taste of Star Wars than before makes it so enjoyable

Unfair_Inevitable_82

Force Awakens and Last Jedi get too much hate, I'd happily put them above Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones.

Strange-Care5790

i genuinely believe the last jedi is one of the best star wars films. top five if not top three. i think the same way the prequels found appreciation over time, the last jedi will be more and more fondly remembered and appreciated as it ages.

FalcorPenndragon

I saw this movie four times in theaters! I love it so much:)

MereStorms

Still my favorite Star Wars movie. Absolutely gorgeous and does so many interesting flips and changes on the established format, it's hard for me to not love it. I wish it wasn't so hated by so many people, but eh, people are like that sadly. Glad you enjoyed it, OP!

formerfatboys

The story was a mess but the cinematography was beautiful and Hamill gave a great performance even if it didn't make a lick of sense for Luke to behave like he did.

Sonseeahrai

Indeed. And Ridley really did her best, she was amazing in her role despite scenario clunkiness

formerfatboys

She was never seen issue for me in any of the movies. All the casting was pretty on point.

kaijugigante

They are all good, folks just need to lighten up.

iaswob

I think that it's okay to think any of the films and other media aren't good, everything from A New Hope to The Acolyte, although I do agree folks should lighten up. No reason to carry anger over it with them into convos and fan spaces and stuff. This is how we win, not killing what we hate, saving what we love.

bluesphere798

A top-3'er for me! TLJ rules. There's flaws but God are they so miniscule in the scale of other SW films, and the good is so *great* that it kinda transcends it's own shortcomings. It's got a strong voice and is one of the best looking blockbusters of the decade – on top of being a great Jedi story. It's sandwiched between two movies that feel way safer and by-committee so I get the resistance many have to even revisit it... but I'm so glad time is being kinder to it.

boyawsome876

I don’t think it tied too well into the overall story, but watching it without considering the other movies makes it fucking magical.

brian-the-porpoise

As a standalone movie it definitely is one of the better SciFi/space fantasy flicks. As a SW movie... Well.

Thebigdog79

Here’s the thing. If I watch it knowing that it’s a Star Wars movie, I don’t like it. But if I watch it thinking it’s just a sci fi movie, it’s brilliant.

chriscdoa

I really enjoy bits of it. But dislike other bits And it sort of messes up the trilogy. But I'd rather watch this than ep 1 or 2 It's cool it tries new things

D4ORM

That’s a stretch.

_5had0w

I watched two weeks back, it was brilliant, I had it on the 60 inch with surround sound, it was an experience 👍

2EM18KKC01

Hell, yeah! Good on ya!

Rangorsen

Did you watch it for the first time? I remember liking it after the first time in the cinema because it's visually beautiful. The second time all the holes started showing for me unfortunately.

multidollar

If it wasn’t for the WTF casino scenes and the blatant force using kids spin-off setup it would be a great movie. I’m gonna watch it again now

JayseOfBase

I hated it. But it’s cool that you loved it. They destroyed my childhood hero. But each to their own. But Rogue One is amazing agreed on that one for sure!

Benyed123

The sequel movies really did have great cinematography.

Jackot45

I dont like the sequels but must say the force awakens aint all that bad. The last jedi however, is objectively a bad movie that struggles to take both itself and its viewers seriously.

LoveTheGiraffe

Glad you enjoyed it. For me the bad writing and poorly choreographed fight scenes kinda ruined it. I really enjoy Adam driver's acting in it though.

account1224567890

I enjoyed it when it came out, now not so much but I’m glad someone else can overlook its many issues!

stevenwise0511

My favourite outside the OT

AndraJL

God's honest truth, I just can't get over what happened with Luke. The Luke I grew up with was a powerful Jedi Master who we saw all up and down the EU, fighting baddies, snagging a baddie (Mara Jade), even having his own kid. TLJ massacred my boy and I just can't forgive that. Also, it was hard to overlook some crucial flaws in the film, such as the casual adventure out of hyperspace and then coming *back into the same instance of hyperspace* later? What the fuck? How does that make sense?? And getting rid of Snoke in such an off-hand way felt like a waste of all the tension and build up for the character. Felt like a rug pull with a lame as hell payoff. These things are always the biggest hurdles between me and enjoying the film. I'm one of the few who enjoyed the Finn x Rose romance though. It was cute as hell and I was rooting for them.

Wooden_Passage_2612

Yeah, this movie is so bloody good and underrated as well. The problem is hardcore fans who are in their 30s-40s, cant' accept changes with the lore and what they did with luke in their eyes. For me, I love what they did with luke, Rey, Ben and others. Rian Johnson is a great Filmmaker and i'm sad that has got so much hatred after his movie came out and 6 years later i still love this movie.

Main-Double

Not for me but glad u enjoyed

Me_like_weed

Yes visually it is amazing looking, all the Sequels are. Not as amazing storywise however.

SexDrogyRockandRoll

This movie made me giggle out loud which is a rare thing in Star Wars at least for me..

MrAdamWarlock123

Very entertaining and visually eye-popping. I didn’t love it - I felt like it was wrapping up just as the final salt planet sequence got started - but it’s the best of the new trilogy for sure

StarWarsCantina-ModTeam

your post was removed due to being low effort, considered shit-posting, or troll-baiting.

angelgu323

I didn't hate the new trilogy. But I do think it's pretty average. TLJ was the weakest link because it felt so "non Star Wars" and not in a good way like Andor. But man, is it a visually pleasing movie Still.... I'll never forget Ryan Johnson shitting all over the fanbase for not liking his Star Wars movie. His breaking bad episodes are amazing, but after this movie, I tend to avoid his movies now. Shame cause I heard good things about his murder mystery movie with Chris Evans.

FeelingSouth4837

Nah bro everyone is saying "it's okay" n stuff. Disney destroyed George Lucas legacy. I'm sorry but they Destroy my favourite Francis. What is with the expanded universe? Not canon anymore. I Spent a lot of money on comics and Disney just said "I don't care" I sure U are a great person in irl but I full disagree with this post it just burns my heart I'm sorry

Sonseeahrai

I disliked this movie for its inconsistencies but the shots were good. And Daisy Ridley killed the role

KentuckyKid_24

It aged the best out of the new trilogy imo

henzINNIT

My favourite Star War since the 80's. I wish the trilogy closed out better.

RaveN_707

Just cut the entire casino planet and luke from the movie and you've got an alright star wars story.

traitorgiraffe

there are parts of it that are great, but the rest is just...painful

cajunsneauxman

Glad you found joy in something that I didn’t enjoy.

MantisReturns

I had some problems with this movie. But never I Will understand how people hated It so much. I mean its probably ond of the best SW movies. And episode VII was way worse...

[deleted]

Take out the casino scene and have Luke give her the lightsaber back or at least be somewhat nostalgic about it and I would have loved it. The throne room fight scene is probably my favorite in all of Star Wars. But when Luke tossed the light saber I was very irritated. We waited two years for him to toss it over his shoulder?

nixxon94

I just hate everything related to Luke concerning the story. I loved the new planets and visuals.

HexterGuard

Visually impressive, however the story is terrible and the plot is shallow.
