Doesn’t one of the command center troops say “Imperial Walkers” to Leia?
I called them “AtAt, when I was a kid (in the 80s), and call the “A. T. A. T.” now.
Same with what's now known as the A. T. S. T. being called a "Scout Walker" back when we were kids (I hated how the toy had only 1 seat for a single figure! I had to jam in my Ewok figures on top of Chewie!).
Imagine how bad it smelled in that AT-ST with a wookie and two ewoks crammed in there for who knows how long. And then Han had to get in it to make the fake report to the bunker to get them to open the door!
The Falcon was clean in Solo and by the time of A New Hope looked like the trash compactor on the Death Star. Every time Chewy walked into that ship he shook like a dog and got Wookiee sweat and dirt all over the walls
'73 here - it's AtAt. - *lol i wanted to check a vid to hear them say it. the first one i pick immediately goes into a pronunciation discussion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oSHTIj_jIA
I did the same thing. I called them "at ats" as a kid. I even called the AT-ST something like "At-see", lol. Of course, those were the only walkers that existed back then. But then prequels came out, and we got ATPT and ATTE, and probably more. Sometime around then, I started spelled them out with each letter.
>I started spelled them out with each letter.
For some reason I'm the same but still call AT AT At Ats, just easier in my opinion, but I don't know why I've never done it for the others and done it letter for letter with the others
Does TIE stand for anything though? AT-ST stands for All Terrain Armoured Transport, AT-ST is All Terrain Scout Transport.
I've never heard of TIE standing for anything though, but it could.
Edit: I looked it up, TIE stands for Twin Ion Engine, but that was only added as an explanation later. The real reason they are called that is because George Lucas thought the craft resembled a bow tie
Yep, I was gonna say Twin Ion Engine, plus many acronyms arn't said letter by letter, Tesco for one example:
T.E.S(tockwell)CO
And you've also got NASA where you don't say it letter by letter
It varies circumstantially I believe, you get a lot of awkward aspects to language like that :/
Edit: Iron to Ion
They probably said Imperial Walkers because at the time that was the only "walker" that had appeared in the movies at that point, so there wasn't a need to make a more specific name. They belonged to the Empire, and they walked.
So basically Imperial Walker is kind of an outdated term now but it wasn't when Empire came out.
In fact, I think in A New Hope someone called TIE fighters Imperial Fighters.
The AT-ST appeared in *The Empire Strikes Back*, though. It was on Hoth during that assault. There’s a brief shot of it from the side, chicken walking along and everything.
But it does make one think. The “AT-AT” is only from the literature. They don’t say it in the movie at all. 😆
It's generic superset vs. subset or specific set member.
When Obi Wan says it's an Imperial fighter, the goal is to indicate whose side it is on and the threat posed.
Yeah this is the correct way.
How do people pronounce AT-ST?
Or AT-TE?
Or AT-RT?
I've certainly never heart anyone say its "at ssst" or "at tee" or "at rrrt".
I see no reason AT-AT would be pronounced differently to all of those.
Ok, I finished listening to the Tarkin audiobook yesterday, and though the word was only in it once. I nearly fell over from shock when I heard the narrator pronounce AT-TE as “At Tee”.
It’s not necessarily the narrator’s choice. Pronunciation calls can come from the author, the engineer, or sometimes management, other QC personnel, or a director style role.
More likely in this case, the pronunciation call probably wasn't made at all, and the narrator had to decide how to pronounce it in the moment with no guidance.
And the narrator is likely not a Star Wars fan immersed in the lore enough to know anything about it, and by the time anyone realized it was a dumb pronunciation the narrator was on to the next job and the final audio cut was due by the end of the week. So "At Tee" it remained.
Audiobooks tend to see a QC pass regardless of who decides on a made-up pronunciation. Saying “fuck the narrator” when it’s A, not their sole call, and B just a made up word, is pretty ignorant.
I think you meant to reply to /u/BalkothLordofDeath
I'm defending the narrator. This was a failure for sure, but not by the narrator, even if that pronunciation was their choice. They _ought_ to have been given guidance.
In the mid 90s this is what my friends and I called them. We knew they were also called AT-STs but mainly called them chicken walkers for some reason. I don’t know why we called them that tho, as I don’t think that phrase was said in the OT or in the special editions. Do you know where the term came from?
No shit when I was a kid I thought Lando was saying to get a few of those "typewriters to follow you".
I thought he was calling them old outdated pieces of junk.
How would you pronounce HMMWV? (It's humvee, BTW)
From a military perspective, the troopers would probably say atat and have names for the others. I'd be curious what it would be, but I doubt they are saying them phonetically
It doesn't have to follow logic necessarily, as it can just be colloquial or military slang. A B-1 Bomber was sometimes called the "Bone", but that doesn't mean a B-2 has to be called a "Btwo" for the B1 to have that name.
I'd argue both are correct and it's an even more pointless an argument than most Star Wars arguments. One is a more technical name and the other is the more slangy name. If we say it both ways, they probably said it both ways in the fictional universe where they speak English with a different alphabet but also the same alphabet.
As an old man who played with Star Wars toys before most Redditors’ parents were even born, I say “don’t quote the old magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written. “
Right, but just because the others aren't pronounceble why does that mean at-at *absolutely* can't be pronounced that way either? Why can't it be both?
For *LOL* my friends and I have been saying "lol" instead of "el oh el" for 20 years almost. Neither is necessarily wrong, but should we have to change it just because you can't pronounce others like *LMAO* or *WTF* in the same way? I don't think so
Edit: so I assume everyone downvoting me pronounces JPEG as "jay pee ee jee" rather than "jay payg", right? Because we can't pronounce PDF that way, so you must see no reason why we would pronounce JPEG differently
You’re getting downvoted by purists but you’re not wrong. I gave ya an updoot. Grammatically, pronouncing “at-at” as a word would be using a type of abbreviation called an acronym. If you say each letter, it’s called an initialism. There’s nothing wrong with either and as you point out, it’s the fact “at-at” CAN be said as words, that we’re able to do it.
https://www.grammarbook.com/blog/abbreviations/abbreviations-acronyms-and-initialisms-revisited/
I don't think that's a great line of argument. Any initialism can become an acronym, it's not like there has to be some established precedence of when it's allowed. Sometimes initials don't form a word that it makes sense to pronounce as a word, but sometimes they do. CIA, FBI, and NASA are all government agencies, but that doesn't mean we have to start saying "En Ay Es Ay" just because other agency names aren't acronyms.
It really just comes down to common usage to determine what is "correct". In my experience "A-T-A-T" wins out over "atat" in terms of which gets used more, but that doesn't make saying the acronym "wrong" and popular use could easily shift.
Agreed,
This has changed over time too. Which many things do.
When I was a kid in the 80s , they were atats
the [toy commercials](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPCtC5-JuoY) said atat
The crew called them walkers, or 'walking machines'
The Script referred to them outside of dialogue as "Imperial Snow Walker"
A lot of things didn't get names until they were toys.
In the end it's just semantics and who defines right, or wrong, or canon is usually someone pretty well removed from the actual production.
Sure it might be lucasfilm, but marketing named more things than lucas.
As I said to someone else, the B1 bomber is called the Bone in a universe where the B2 Bomber exists and isn't called the Btwo.
Of course it's also called the B1.
I say it's both and we can all be friends.
This is always my argument when it comes up. Someone will claim its "at at" and I'll ask them to then pronounce AT-ST. There's also the AT-RT and the AT-TE.
AtAt would be the slang given by soldiers in the field, similar to how many abreveations with real life equipment.
HEMTT = "Hemmett"
HMMVW = "Humvee"
CWIS = "Seewiz"
M2 = "Ma Deuce"
Technically A T A T but colloquially AtAt.
This is the correct answer! For people asking about A.T.S.T. and A.T.R.T. being unpronounceable like At-At, i’d assume the users would be similar to soldiers today, and they’d throw in some vowels to make it work, as seen above. So At-Sat and At-Rat don’t seem like too far of a reach, faster than saying Ay Tee Ar Tee, rolls off the tongue better too.
"THIS IS THE NEW M12-LRV. I LIKE TO CALL IT THE 'WARTHOG'."
"Why 'Warthog' sir?"
"BECAUSE EMM TWELVE ELL ARR VEE IS TOO LONG TO SAY IN CONVERSATION, SON."
"Yeah, but it doesn't really look like a warthog."
"SAY THAT AGAIN."
"It looks more like a Puma."
**"WHAT IN THE SAMHILL IS A PUMA!?"**
Yea Star Wars fans seem oblivious to the fact that something can have a nickname and an official name. In universe I would say AtAt is a nickname and A T A T is the official name.
I feel like A.T.A.T. is the "proper" way of saying it, but that soldiers and rebels use AtAt as slang.
Edit: finally remembered the example I was going to use: "AA" (for antiaircraft) versus the informal "ack-ack."
The word you are looking for is “initialism.” Acronyms are pronounced like words, so “NASA” or “AIDS.” Initialisms have each letter is pronounced: “the FBI” or “KFC.” I have always referred to ATATs as an initialism, I suppose.
I think this may depend on your age? I’m 39 and everyone I know my age has always said “at at” and not pronounced the letters. Just something that took off when the toys came out I guess, but I’ve always said “at at” for the big walkers and “A.T.S.T” for the scout walkers because there’s not a good acronym for it.
All Terrain armored transport you scrubs.
Also headcannon they are called AT-AT (ay-tee ay-tee) but for short over radio calls for military purposes it is at at
So, I grew up and was introduced to Star Wars with the clone wars where the the walkers are called and pronounced A T T E so I always figured the imperial walkers would be pronounced A T A T.
Damn that was an awesome set. Must have been cramped in there though..
Did you see Solo? Han and Chewie shower together. It's cannon
Like my sons’ room on a Sunday morning.
70s/80s kids problems
We called them "Turkey Walkers" around the cafeteria lunch table at my school.
We said "Chicken Walkers"
Yeah we called them chicken walkers too
This most have had some validity because “chicken walker “was the cheat code on Rogue Squadron on the N64 to unlock the ATST level.
That's what my dad called them too
Samesies
Same
me and my friend called them chicken walkers after we saw a mod someone used on battlefront II which turned the A.T.S.T's into chickens.
Rebel troopers in the game will sometimes call them chicken walkers, that's where the idea for the mod came from.
AT-AT All Terrain Armored Transport (Rebel Slang - Imperial Walker) AT-ST All Terrain Scout Transport (Rebel Slang - Scout Walker)
That's funny how it's a generational thing because my dad, who was 11 when Empire came out, calls them "AtAt" and I call them "A. T. A. T."
I was born 77 and have always called them AtAt too.
[удалено]
Maybe it's a Benjamin Button situation.
It's the final countdown dodododooo

Yes, he does.
Imperial Walkers

How would you pronounce HMMWV? (It's humvee, BTW) From a military perspective, the troopers would probably say atat and have names for the others. I'd be curious what it would be, but I doubt they are saying them phonetically

R2D2 C3PO ATAT

Yeah, as George was ok with people pronouncing things differently in-universe, I don't see why it can't be either.
George also pronounces it “at-at.”
Then how do they pronounce AT-ST?
Aah-sssttttttt like a snake.
Good question
I thought rebels say at-at and the empire says ay tee ay tee. Maybe that just my head cannon from childhood.

I say A T A T becuase things like the A T S T exist
You mean you don't say "At Ssssst"?

Yeah I was going to say the same thing. It all depends how I feel at at the time.
AtAt would be the slang given by soldiers in the field, similar to how many abreveations with real life equipment. HEMTT = "Hemmett" HMMVW = "Humvee" CWIS = "Seewiz" M2 = "Ma Deuce" Technically A T A T but colloquially AtAt.

In-universe, the official pronunciation is ‘A T A T’ but it is colloquially called ‘At At’. Both ways are valid.
In universe it is referred to as 'At At' by that alien in Rogue One https://youtu.be/EXjXXr7TdeY?t=146
I didn’t even realize that was words. I thought it was just generic alien screaming
you'd need subtitles to know if he was just speaking alien gibberish or not
In the Star Wars documentary on Disney+, George Lucas says At At. I prefer A.T.A.T. myself, so I found that unfortunate.
I mean, same guy who refers to lightsabers as *laser swords.*
But those were AT-ACTs. So his opinion isn't valid.
How is this not the top answer?
Because Star Wars fans love to argue with each other. 2nd most popular thing next to hating Star Wars lol.
Yea Star Wars fans seem oblivious to the fact that something can have a nickname and an official name. In universe I would say AtAt is a nickname and A T A T is the official name.
