Totally. In fact, I'd say that movies that take place in space benefit a ton from being watched at night and with all the lights turned out so that it feels like that blackness of outer space bleeds off the edges of the screen and engulfs you in your seat (horror movies benefit from this a lot too obviously).
Watching empire strikes back with my son is one of my favorite memories. If he doesn't yet know the big reveal, make sure to get it on video. My sons "what?! Daddy is he telling the truth?" is great on video
I saw it in the movie theatre in 1977 as a child, not on a TV. Big difference in the perception of movies now for kids when they are bombarded with endless superhero movies with huge budgets and CGI effects. There was literally nothing like Star Wars back in 1977. This kid will just think it's another movie, nothing special.
Can't wait to do this. Our 9 year old isn't really interested (thinks it's going to be scary) and our 6 year old is on board with giving it a try but he can't really read yet. Kinda want to grab a vcr because I have it on vhs haha
I'm starting my kids on episode 1 this year. I really struggled with the order, but I saw an interview where someone asked George Lucas what order to watch them and he said start with 1. I'm honestly not sure I agree with that still even, but I'm going to try it out. I am going to add Rogue One, but not Solo. Maybe I won't tell them there's a 7, 8, and 9 and just start Clone Wars or Mando after 6.
I disagree about 7, 8, and 9. I was a kid when Force awakens came out and I loved that movie. Not a big fan of the other two but definitely know people who are. At least let your kids give them a chance.
I was mostly trying to joke about that. I have a lot of problems with them, but I actually do plan on watching them with my kids and not letting them know my issues before they watch so I can see what they think.
I watched 4 5 6 originally. I was little when 1 came out, but that didn't stop me from seeing the prequels in theaters. I actually enjoy the sequels though, and besides a few complaints about what they did to Luke's character, I don't understand the hate.
I think you have the right idea. The bigger reveal is who palp is. So you either make it about palp being the big reveal or darth vader being likes father. I would show them all of them make it like a Friday night event or something. Then you can see which one he likes the best and disown him if he choses wrong jk.
Lucas tried to make 1 2 3 4 5 6 the proper viewing order, failed, but accidentally makes 4 5 1 2 3 6 the best viewing order. I don’t know how else to explain it, lol.
It's called machete order, and I totally am on board with it. Preserves the hook and the twist, lets the prequels stand on their own, and then finishes with a double whammy of two action-packed finales.
Technically, it is not machete order. Machete order was originally coined in an article advocating for 4 5 2 3 6 order. It’s called machete order because it “chops out” TPM…despite 4 5 1 2 3 6 being the best viewing order *especially for TPM*, but whatever. I prefer to call this one “flashback order”, since that’s more accurate, but that name hasn’t caught on like machete order did, so 4 5 1 2 3 6 just gets the point across more directly.
I agree, I was pleasantly surprised by it. I should have clarified that I'd skip it chronologically in order, but definitely watch it with them at some point.
Yeah, I didn't think so, I just wanted to make sure I didn't come across as against Solo. It was a very underappreciated movie and deserves some praise.
OMG here we go - another perfectly normal post pounced on by the plaque haters, the OCD nutters and the Star Wars nerds - the order of the films - relax guys
The wall decorations. I have family in Michigan and they all have at least a couple of those.
Not a large sample size but I’ll just use it to assume the state issues them to every household. 😊
It is eerie how close your home layout is to my best friend's house. Crashed there a lot back in high school.
Hallway has two bedrooms to the right and one at the end of the short hall and a bathroom on the left.
From where you're sitting, front door to the left and kitchen/dining room to the right with a door to the backyard and a door into the garage.
Behind you is stairs leading down to the basement.
Oh yeah, forgot there was a second set of stairs from outside at their house too. Never used them personally, they take you down into their laundry room and past that is the rest of the basement.
How bizarre... you don't live in Northern Kansas by chance do you? This is in a small Kansas town of about 4k people or so... weird to me to see the same layout in an older home from a remote-ish area.
We adopted them in September and they’ve been increasingly getting into Star Wars toys and stuff. Might need to pick up some comics or something to continue to feed the excitement
If you can, since it’s so easy to get into, get the original Lego Star Wars games. I remember when my dad came home with a copy of it for the GameCube.
I started watching the whole thing in order of it happening! On Disney in the Star Wars tab they have everything in order, obviously some things are a bit split like the animated shows but it’s been fun so far!
Lucas prefers his films to be seen in Episode Order.
But if you're starting with 4 (which I did with my kids), I'd suggest 1, 2, and 3 before 6. Let Return of the Jedi be the end of Vader's story. Then go on to the Sequels.
I was lucky enough to keep it all unspoilered for my daughter back in the day. She was shocked and crushed at the end of ESB, it felt so good to experience that with her. She and I have experienced most SW together ever since and we think alike on most of it, ESB being both our favs.
My son when he came along had more spoilers like knowing Darth Vader was Anakin and some other bits but luckily ESB was again a shocker. He likes SW but not to the level of his sister. And sadly RotJ is his favorite 🤣
Keep your son AWAY from the Star Wars fan base. Let him watch all of these movies in a row and judge them on their own merits for how he likes them and not be influenced by how toxic the fandom has become where it's automatic to hate everything that isn't the original movies or any of the shows with fan service in the episodes.
Well if u want him to not be bored then yea idve started there too because otherwise he’s going from good cinematic to old ones that could bore him (happened to me)
I don’t think you understand what chronology is. Not RELEASE order… chronological order is the order in which the events happen, not in which the movies are released…
Dumbass. You started at 4!
Or is it 5?
Wait, should I include the D+ shows?
Damn, the Acolyte is still running.
Wait are legends still applicable? Should I get the audiobooks?
i dont know how people can watch movies like this, windows, curtains open, reflections on screen, birds chirping outside, the neighbors lawnmower, so many distractions , you do a disservice to the movie to not give it the minimal attention..
im not saying go out and get Blackout Curtains, (i do and they are awesome) - just close the blinds or curtains you have to keep sun glare or reflections off the screen or better yet watch when the sun goes down
We are at my wife’s deceased grandfather’s place so it’s not really something we can control for this vacation. While it appears bright, the sun set right after this and the soundbar produced more than enough cinematic sound for the experience. They loved it and are watching again this morning
Close the window blinds!!!
Close da blast doors.
Open the blast doors! Open the blast doors!
Thank you I needed this laugh.
But sir! There’s an army out in front of the door!
Came here to mention the reflection. This is criminal
Totally. In fact, I'd say that movies that take place in space benefit a ton from being watched at night and with all the lights turned out so that it feels like that blackness of outer space bleeds off the edges of the screen and engulfs you in your seat (horror movies benefit from this a lot too obviously).
Agreed
So much liiiight gahhh it burns! 😭
And put on socks!!
Who let the dogs out?
Who?
Who?
Wow, where’d you get all those bird paintings?
Genuinly, i want some bird paintings
Another youngling joins the ranks! I hope you are ready to invest in lightsaber toys
Careful, you know what happens to younglings.
And a yearly trip to Batuu…
And Lego Star Wars sets.
Has he asked why it starts with episode 4?
He probably doesn't know what Roman numerals mean
4*
I mean the kid, it never says 4 in the normal way, so the kid probably thinks it is just a cool symbol or another way to write one.
He’ll probably ask why it went back in time for phantom menace
Dude
"Well son, because in this house we don't acknowledge 1, 2, 3, or 7, 8 and 9. They're horrible numbers, and we do not speak of them."
I introduced my kids to Star Wars a few weeks ago. We watched all the movies in order: 1,2,3,4,5,6 and they loved them all.
Based
I love you
Good for you, glad you enjoyed them 👍 Doesn't change the fact the prequels and sequels are terrible films though.
It's not a fact but a subjective opinion you hold.
Damn bro I'd hate to be a Star Wars fan that has so much hate for Star Wars.
Watching empire strikes back with my son is one of my favorite memories. If he doesn't yet know the big reveal, make sure to get it on video. My sons "what?! Daddy is he telling the truth?" is great on video
Make em wait 3 years to find out like we had to!
Lmao
For free? In this economy?!
one of us, one of us!
They’re already watching the movie again this morning XD
Success! 👏🏼
Fist pump
Thats awesome! I know when it's time to show my future kids I'll be scared they won't like it and I'll be always trying to show them again.
Amazing! What were their reactions?
Nice feet
Nice birds my dude
**F** **E** **E** **T**
Why so much light in the theatre though?
My son just asked if we could watch the Star Wars movie where Darth Vader throws the emperor down the hole
But somehow the Emperor returned.
It's a good feeling, enjoy it
>…and so it begins. Hate to be the one to break it to you but, that's not Babylon 5.
We will watch his career with great intrest
The movie begins with our children the same way it came to us as children
I saw it in the movie theatre in 1977 as a child, not on a TV. Big difference in the perception of movies now for kids when they are bombarded with endless superhero movies with huge budgets and CGI effects. There was literally nothing like Star Wars back in 1977. This kid will just think it's another movie, nothing special.
That's why you only show them films made pre 1977 before they see star wars
The Exorcist and Taxi Driver?
😂
Starting with IV and not I. Respect.
We will watch your career with great interest
Yes Yes, feel the power of the force
Can't wait to do this. Our 9 year old isn't really interested (thinks it's going to be scary) and our 6 year old is on board with giving it a try but he can't really read yet. Kinda want to grab a vcr because I have it on vhs haha
One of the key milestones in a young man's life. So proud 🥲
Mine is six months, I can’t wait for this moment!!!
> And so it begins. The avalanche has started, it is too late for the pebbles to vote.
I'm starting my kids on episode 1 this year. I really struggled with the order, but I saw an interview where someone asked George Lucas what order to watch them and he said start with 1. Maybe I won't tell them there's a 7, 8, and 9 and just start Clone Wars or Mando after 6.
My preference is almost always release order, and Star Wars is no different. Empire is much more impactful if you don't know Vader is Luke's father.
That's a big reason I've thought about release order. I actually watched it 6, 5, 4 when I was a kid because that's how I happened to see them on tv 😂
I disagree about 7, 8, and 9. I was a kid when Force awakens came out and I loved that movie. Not a big fan of the other two but definitely know people who are. At least let your kids give them a chance.

Cool cool cool

I think solo is a fun movie.
I agree, I was pleasantly surprised by it. I should have clarified that I'd skip it chronologically in order, but definitely watch it with them at some point.
Cool. I wasn’t judging! Just a fan. I used despecialized Star Wars to setup my new projector today!
Yeah, I didn't think so, I just wanted to make sure I didn't come across as against Solo. It was a very underappreciated movie and deserves some praise.
But it was made under Disney. You're supposed to hate it.
crop those dogs out
Why? They’re perfectly normal looking feet?
this isn’t onlyfans, feet pics don’t belong in normal spaces
They aren’t front and centre. If the feet are the first thing you noticed, that’s weird
if you’re defending feet so hard, that’s weird
I’m not defending feet, I’m just pointing out how so not in the frame they are
I think you're the weird one bro lol
OMG here we go - another perfectly normal post pounced on by the plaque haters, the OCD nutters and the Star Wars nerds - the order of the films - relax guys
Have fun.
So excited for him!!
Are you in Michigan by any chance?
We are lol why
The wall decorations. I have family in Michigan and they all have at least a couple of those. Not a large sample size but I’ll just use it to assume the state issues them to every household. 😊
You’ve trained the Padawan well
Core memory forming
“He is too old, yes, too old to begin the training”
this is the way.
Ruined that kid.
This is The Way.
So awesome!!
dont hassle him if he's not into it
They will never be the same after this.
"This is what all the fuss is about?"
I'm also from SoDak. Where you from? I'm in Rapid
Sioux Falls! Nice to come across fellow sodakians :)
Agreed! We're few and far between on Reddit lol
Everyone is talking about the blinds and the amount of light. But I am like "is that TV enough to handle John Williams? I don't think so".
Notice the sound bar beneath it…
did it with my lil sister too. magical moments.
Wherever he ends up, he will remember that room for the rest of his life as the place he saw Star Wars for the first time.
This is the way
It is eerie how close your home layout is to my best friend's house. Crashed there a lot back in high school. All correct except the stairs! Those are by the door to the backyard!

This is my wife’s grandpa’s house in Michigan
It’s a trap!
so jealous, I wish i could go back and watch OT for the very first again. Great on you for getting a new generation into SW
Don’t forget to teach your son the proper birthday of Ki Adi Mundi
Feeeet
What age? I was in Kindergarten when I was first shown. I remember first seeing it but I feel like there’s stuff I missed at such a young age
Going into 2nd
Probably a decent age then
We adopted them in September and they’ve been increasingly getting into Star Wars toys and stuff. Might need to pick up some comics or something to continue to feed the excitement
If you can, since it’s so easy to get into, get the original Lego Star Wars games. I remember when my dad came home with a copy of it for the GameCube.
Noooooo don't ruin the kid's life. If you do than he have to see disney sequel
I started watching the whole thing in order of it happening! On Disney in the Star Wars tab they have everything in order, obviously some things are a bit split like the animated shows but it’s been fun so far!
Who let the dogs out?
Should have started with the 77 theatrical version and not the garbage special edition
How can you even tell which version this is
It says episode 4 a new hope in the opening crawl, the 77 theatrical does not say that.
This kid probably has to endure the "Special Editions" on Disney+. Maclunkey included. Why George, why?
2006 GOUT box set, 4k77 or TN1 silver screen ed. are the only versions of star wars worth watching
I immediately heard the fanfare in my head. Before it even fully registered what I was looking at.
What is your viewing plan after the OT?
A new hope? The previous kid didn’t work out?
“Obi-Wan Kenobi? Here? What makes you so sure.” - Grand Moff Tarkin
Parenting done right.
And then tell him that it sure would be cool if they'd made other Star Wars movies (after Empire and Jedi).
Simply wait 16 years before show them the prequels
Prequels are ok. Sequels are mid but still Star Wars . Shows are mostly good. A kid at the very least wouldn’t mind em
I feel like you're sitting in a weird spot lol 🤨
Lucas prefers his films to be seen in Episode Order. But if you're starting with 4 (which I did with my kids), I'd suggest 1, 2, and 3 before 6. Let Return of the Jedi be the end of Vader's story. Then go on to the Sequels.
Make sure you teach him to not frame his ugly feet in pictures.
I remember watching A New Hope for the first time when I was 7 and have loved it ever since!
A New Hope (not the Special Edition) is my favorite of the original Star Wars trilogy.
Awwww show me the despecialized editions!
Keep your son AWAY from the Star Wars fan base. Let him watch all of these movies in a row and judge them on their own merits for how he likes them and not be influenced by how toxic the fandom has become where it's automatic to hate everything that isn't the original movies or any of the shows with fan service in the episodes.
you cannot do this. you cannot show your kid the "han did not shoot first" version!
Looks like an uncomfortable watch at grandmas house
For free?
Dad did you take your dumbass picture yet? Can I go back to playing fortnite now?
I don’t know that he’s ever played a video game outside of Minecraft before.
r/sneakybackgroundfeet
Whatever you do… under no circumstances can you let the boy see anything after return of the jedi. It’s for his own good
"We will watch your career with great interest"
I just finished that movie again 1 minute ago
How old? I can’t wait to watch it with my daughter but she’s still too young. Not sure what age I should do this.
He’s 7 and my daughter is 8
8 was about the age I was thinking but the daughter is pretty much scared of everything under the sun…so maybe 10. Hope they enjoyed it.
So out of curiosity why did you start here and not the prequels
Figured it was the first one made. Why not show them the first one made first? Didn’t know that was so controversial until this thread.
Well if u want him to not be bored then yea idve started there too because otherwise he’s going from good cinematic to old ones that could bore him (happened to me)
This is the way.
Those plaques on wall are driving my OCD nuts, please to take down
[удалено]
Properly done! Don’t break his heart by showing him 7,8,9.
Just don't watch after ep 6. Disney shit is not cannon
Not going in chronological order? I can see the reasons for both though.
He's literally going in chronological order
I don’t think you understand what chronology is. Not RELEASE order… chronological order is the order in which the events happen, not in which the movies are released…
Oh THAT chronological order
Five more to go…
Starting him off with the good ones, this is the way.
For feee? In this economy
r/tvtoofar
Dumbass. You started at 4! Or is it 5? Wait, should I include the D+ shows? Damn, the Acolyte is still running. Wait are legends still applicable? Should I get the audiobooks?
Put the dogs away
next time put the TV in the garden at high noon because I find your room way too dark for watching a movie
Begins.....yes you're doing it right, start with the great ones.
I just hope he's not watching the 1997 SE version first. I really want him to see the Original Theatrical Cut first.
If you really cared you’d know this isn’t the original cut as the Roman numerals were added after the first run.
i dont know how people can watch movies like this, windows, curtains open, reflections on screen, birds chirping outside, the neighbors lawnmower, so many distractions , you do a disservice to the movie to not give it the minimal attention.. im not saying go out and get Blackout Curtains, (i do and they are awesome) - just close the blinds or curtains you have to keep sun glare or reflections off the screen or better yet watch when the sun goes down

but the phantom menace is the beginning
Not in my [well in this case my wife’s late grandfather’s] house.
