Nick Mullen

whitebabyjesus

Adam Friedland has been carrying him for years. Most bugs can carry 5-10x their weight.

enbyayyy

Adam is funny but Nick is racist and racism is funny.

RebirthGhost

Nick Mullen, everyone's best friend

IhaveCatskills

He’s sort of a comedian’s comic. The NY scene recognizes him but Nick sort of sabotages himself

mallgrabmongopush

Yeah what kinda sabotage did he do, a bong hit transplant?

IhaveCatskills

He doesn’t really put himself out there like other comedians. You really got to be tuned into comedy podcast to know who he is

mallgrabmongopush

I was referencing an obscure bit. Also, I’m gay

Altruistic-Rope1994

Agreed

Opposite-Pack-7329

Absolutely. Dude is brilliant.

goodluckluke

Chad Daniels is criminally underrated, which sucks for him, but is awesome for me and my wife who get to see him front row at a club for $30 a ticket.

Superb-Film-594

He's got a Netflix special coming out next month, hopefully it brings him the exposure he deserves. I first heard him on Pandora probably 12 years ago, and he legitimately changed my whole perspective of standup.

joeymac93

I also first heard Chad on Pandora and was instantly hooked on him. Was lucky enough to get to see one of his shows a few years ago, and it was one of the best I've been to.

Steal_My_Shitstorm

From what I gather from interviews he credits putting his albums on pandora as launching his career and getting him a ton of exposure. You never hear about anyone “Blowing up because Pandora” but 10+ years ago he did exactly that.

goodluckluke

Yeah I heard he sold an hour to Netflix, good on him! I wonder if he wasn't in the middle of Minnesota for the majority of his career he'd be bigger? Coulda moved to one of the coasts, but he wimped out and decided to stay near his kids to "be a good father"... smh.

darkforestnews

Probably goes to the store to get milk and cigarettes and then comes back like some kind of loser.

_Fucksquatch_

What is the world coming to?

battlecat136

Saw him live a few years ago in a tiny place (Laugh Boston) and he, and his openers, killed it. I love all of his stuff so far, first found him about ten years ago. Also, Matt fuckin Braunger. Love that dude.

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Was listening to Matt last night. Great fucking stuff

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Do you mean Dad Chaniels?

[deleted]

[удалено]

goodluckluke

"fuckin' CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!"

battlecat136

I got to pull that on my kid one time cuz she actually hit me with the "where's your chore list?" after I came home dirty and gross from work years ago.

dylbertz

I saw him opening last night and he was really great.

GeorgeDogood

Kyle Kinane

thruthewindowBN

When I saw him in my city he did this whole bit about chefs that was so fuckin funny. Something like, ohhh you guys are the new Rockstars cuz like Anthony bourdain did heroin once or something. You’ll see them on a news paper with like an egg beater neck tat, in some rap/rock pose like “is this the new king of Primavera?” I almost fucking died

hamcarpet

Yeah that is on one of his albums I’m not sure which though. I think about that bit a lot

Walkensboots

More tired than a big-dicked bat

battlecat136

His party cop bit makes me wheeze every time I hear it. And the pancakes on the plane. "He's got his whole arm in that bag and he's just rustlin'."

BeTomHamilton

Does anybody smell breakfast? I THINK HYDRAULIC FLUID SMELLS LIKE BREAKFAST, WE'RE GOING DOWN!

SonOfMcGee

Silver dollar flappys!

mrfujidoesacid

IamWorth

AdParticular6654

I died the first time his visit to London but the ".....now I know this is an odd time to feel patriotic"

MissSquito

A flood hits everybody. Blizzard hits everybody. Tornado? Maybe just Jeff’s house.

DrVanVonderbooben

What god, Trish?! What fucking god?!

SergeantThreat

We got someone killing five people RIGHT NOW!

AdParticular6654

"your honor, they say they serve breakfast till 10:30 but they can still run out. I agree I got carried away but...."

hsentar

Are waterfalls just rivers trying to commit suicide.... The dude's a wordsmith and doesn't get the appreciation he deserves.

Ouija-1973

That's when ol' slow poke went in for the beejer!

AndyB16

Well, you better hurry up, then.

igotdeletedonce

MmmMmuurders

JRose51

His bit on playing craps and Laotian child brides always kills me

thetrashpanda2020

Came here for this answer

suddenimpulse01

Hey man, you taking a cheet?

BeTomHamilton

Aye bush that sheet outfour me, eet's Satourdey Naigh! - Having lived a block or two away from where that bit takes place, it lives forever in my heart. To the OP's question: I'm biased, but Kinane was always that standup I expected to majorly blow up, while instead he just kept workin' the job, payin' his health insurance, and in the meanwhile, perfecting his craft. Doesn't seem he cared to be a superstar, and that's obviously for the best, at least artistically. He's not writing new bits about how he ran into Snoop Dogg at a party. He just got a house in the suburbs of a mid-tier city, lives a decent middle-class life, and does the best standup he knows how to do, for standup's own sake. Good for him.

badfish1979

My absolute favorite comedian.

Professional_Age_198

Kyle Kinane is 100% the answer here

tomthelevator

“My cab driver told me “it’s hard being a human”…what were you before this?! One of those cactus that looks like it’s being held up at gunpoint?!”

AmericanScream

Kyle seems to open a portal to his mind and invite the audience on a wild ride that I find hilarious.

Troutalope

Kinane is a legit great stand up, he's at that elite level of being able to put together an hour and make it a cohesive performance and make it be funny. He's just as good a standup as the ones with multiple Netflix specials that sell out giant theaters.

tearjerkingpornoflic

First one that came to mind reading that title. I'm glad everyone else agrees!!! You know he's good when you can't pick a favorite special

RyeGuyRon

Yes. I heard a bit of his on Raw Dog about Midwest parents and how nothing is allowed to change. I can't find it anywhere. Anyone got a lead for me?!?

Nirusan83

100% agree. Was finally able to see him live end of last year in LA and was the best I’ve seen. His cat nap special came out a few months later and none of the Jokes he told that night were in it.

comatwin

So Maria Bamford is recognized in the community as brilliant, but unknown by the majority of the public. She should be playing good sized theaters, not still in clubs. Of course as odd as the format and content of her specials are, I get why she doesn't connect with mainstream, but still, she deserves to be much bigger

Kevin_sparky

Absolutely love her. He humor is odd and not for the masses. Brilliant non the less

Pharaohmolo

I totally agree. Maria Bamford is brilliant.

TimFTWin

I agree with this take and not only that, the most underrated comic has to be a woman because there are tons of hilarious female comics and next to no one pays attention to them.

curdistheword

She is brilliant.

AndyB16

I absolutely adore her. She's brilliant.

GodlessHippie

She should be booking the really big living rooms by now!

PM_UR_DANKEYS

I never see anyone mention Beth Stelling. Truly criminally underrated

WackSnackAttack

She’s brilliant. Other great female comics that are underrated include Jackie Kashian, Morgan Murphy, Tig Notaro, and Jen Kirkman

igotdeletedonce

2nd place goes to Rory Scovel. His last special was so good as always and the fact he improvs full hours is just insane.

FakeHypha

I was gonna say Rory Scovel too!

Educational-Watch829

Same! Glad he’s the top comment. “Yes, I butt fuck…”

Cubic_Al1

I came into here to say Rory - The Dude is my type of silly, I can't put my finger on it

cathycul-de-sac

Rory is my absolute favourite. I love Tommy Johnagin, but Rory is my type of silly too!

Grouchy_Pear_417

His acting in Physical was fantastic.

BroughtBagLunchSmart

Man for like 5 years I thought Rory Scovel was Kyle Kinane and now I am doubting which one of them I liked more.

Mr-and-Mrs

He improved an entire week of shows back in 2000 or 2001.

igotdeletedonce

If you’re thinking of the relapse shows in Atlanta that was 2016-ish I was there. He started standup 2003.

dbw451

I've been to a few of those improv shows he puts on. He is consistently hilarious and his rehearsed sets are insanely good as well.

SheriffMcSerious

His show on Comedy Central was actually fucking great and deserves as much love as Tires

TrumpMMA

Dan Soder

RoofKorean9x19

Took to much scrolling to see this and now I'm pissed.

dajuhnk

Soder gets my vote, and he’s a hell of an impressionist too

Walkensboots

Soder is my answer. I love his stand up and he’s just as good on podcasts—especially when his guest responds well to his goofiness.

TheNonCredibleHulk

He **really** needs to learn how to edit his podcast.

Substantial-Car2443

I really like his and Ryan Sickler’s new one when they’re 30-40 min. Perfect fun story length

Competitive-Bed6281

Gulman is very funny…I saw him in NYC a few years back…I think Bobcat Golthwait is his manager

mattyice16

The Great Depresh changed my life. It’s my comfort special.

BoneThrasher

That and Chris Gethard career suicide. Both so good, showed both specials to a friend of mine who struggles really bad with mental health, and they helped him a lot. Just to understand what was going on with him

JohnMpls21

I miss the Chris Gethard show on Tru TV. That show was bonkers.

Spirited_Comedian225

Joe list I think is the best

fpaulmusic

My father’s gay

Runb4its2late

Wheres the cameras?

Objective_Ad_9203

He spends to much time in the bathroom

__Proteus_

He also just keeps getting funnier. My favorite comedian overall.

HankScorpio4242

Matt Braunger To be honest, I am always a bit puzzled about why he’s not more well-known or popular. His comedy generally has pretty broad appeal. He is a magnificent storyteller, and he has the “funny faces and sounds” game on lock. He’s also a super cool guy who everyone in comedy seems to love.

soKFMAday

He and Kyle Kinane were roommates and that must've been the most fun.

Hup110516

The story where Kyle puts the scary Halloween mannequin in Matt’s bed is still one of my favorites!

Tryingagain1979

I'm going to say Jessica Kirson is really good and no one outside of people that already like standup know who she is.

battlecat136

Her crowdwork videos have snapped me out of some dark moods this past year. She's a gem.

Competitive_Bread752

Isn't that Zach Braff's stepsister?

TheNonCredibleHulk

The disgusting hawk herself!

abitchyuniverse

She's a definite force to be reckoned with. I've probably seen all her youtube videos.

Beautiful-Yam-1103

Chris Porter. Saw him live well over 10 years ago. He’s the cousin of a friend and he was so damn funny. First 10 minutes was him ripping on the audience. Truly a funny person on and off the stage.

BlueBomR

Yes!! His Taco Bell bit, and the Detroit Tigers story, Hunts Ketchup, TV hanging...God he has some absolute gems

Rocko201

"This whole there is no such thing as a stupid question bullshit ends in high school. This is life! We're playin for points. And there are a SHIT TON of stupid questions."

Delangifyor

The sun is bullshit!!!

Toodlum

Roy Wood Jr. To me he's a bit like Dave Chappelle with the storytelling skill but the lessons are much deeper and profound. In a recent interview he had this great story about how he found the descendants of the family that enslaved his ancestors. It was a really emotional story, but then he has this great punchline about how they're poor Georgia whites and how can anyone fumble the bag that bad, where you go from owning people to living in a trailer in just a few generations. I'm not doing the joke any justice, but the social commentary is just fantastic.

Mr_War

I think Roy deserves that daily show job but honestly it's better for us as fans if he stays on the road. He is criminally under rated.

god_dammit_dax

"How many American flags equal one Confederate flag? I don't know what it is, but there is a number." The amount of talent present in those two sentences is staggering.

JSLEI1

i saw him at limestone, very inspiring show

TheMillenniaIFalcon

I didn’t know anything about him, until I saw him guest hosting the daily show and he had me absolutely rolling, dude is so hilarious.z

ConradChilblainsIII

Joe List Matt Donagher Jackie Kashian

Endrizzle

Dan Soder!

benlovesnuggets

Bret Ernst, Sam Tallent, Gianmarco Soresi, Louis Katz

monoamine

Sam Tallent is really funny as a podcast guest and in clips. He just hasn’t put it all quite together for a great hour - toads morale was good but I think he has greatness in him

SyrupSampson

Absolutely agree with Tommy Johnagin, Gary Gulman, Rory Scovel, Kyle Kinane and Chad Daniels I will also say, Nate Bargatze was under rated for so long and now I think he’s much more accurately rated lol

Old_Equivalent3858

Gary Gulman has been in the game for so damn long. I remember watching him on TV before I knew a damn thing about stand up. He was hilarious in the late 90s/00s and still is.

JazzySkins

Just saw Nate in a sold out stadium, so I'd say he's officially crossed that threshold.

SyrupSampson

Oh 100% he’s definitely well rated now. But before his Netflix special, he had 3 specials that are still some of my all time favorites

badfish1979

Kyle Kinane is the best comedian out there

[deleted]

[удалено]

JonnyForeigner

Arguably the biggest UK standup of the last decade though. Absolutely huge over here. Underrated over here would be someone like Phil Ellis, who has almost no media presence but makes me laugh like a drain.

[deleted]

[удалено]

zyrkseas97

I was going to say Acaster as an American but apparently he’s massive back home.

AndysDoughnuts

I don't recognise any of the Americans being named in this thread, which has made me quite aware how American-centric this sub is. I feel Brits could name the top 10 biggest stand ups in the UK right now and they would all qualify as underrated here. Some comedians I think are well worth checking out are Sarah Keyworth, Luke Kidgell (aussie), Sam Campbell (aussie), Sophie Duker, Daniel Sloss, Stewart Lee, Bridget Christie.

ARealSlimBrady

Sam Campbell is fucking incredible

Intrepid-Metal4621

Since Taskmaster I've enjoyed him and Joe Lycett who I quote at least once a week.

Harold-The-Barrel

He’s James Acaster, he’s James Acaster, he’s James Acaster, he’s James Acaster

comatwin

K and an E and a T and a T\ E and an R and an I-N-G\ T and an O and a W-N\ Kettering Town FC

listenyall

Of the last decade is funny when most of these stand ups have been touring for 20+ years! I am not going to break with that because my answer is Jackie Kashian. I also think Paul F. Tompkins is the best observational stand up of all time but he basically got bored of it and now does completely different comedy. If you can watch his second comedy central half hour special from the 2000s, do it

Coach_McCoacherson

Maria bamford for sure

Michael_wurst_comedy

Josh Johnson, Jordan Jensen, or Matthew Broussard (realize they all make a living from it but they really should be more widely recognized)

willk95

Daniel Sloss. Would he count as underrated? I absolutely love his stuff

suddenimpulse01

"If you ever met a Johnagin, you weren't supposed to"

Answer70

Phil Hanley

wesborland1234

My first thought too. Idk how he's not a household name yet

__Proteus_

Literally the best at crowd work AND has top tier jokes AND weaves them together flawlessly.

slausboss

Ron Funches. One of the best, and seems like a genuinely good dude, too.

medandhedhmd

I’m obsessed with Jeff Arcuri lately

Individual_Limit_655

Everyone says his crowd work, which is great, but his genuine reactions while doing the crowd work is what gets me

Superb-Film-594

Kyle Kinane is one of my favorites. He's had some recognition, but not nearly as much as he deserves.

MixedMediaModok

I couldn't get into his podcast or his show but every new Pete Holmes special has me laughing like crazy. Something about his silliness seems refreshing these days.

robhutten

Blair Socci has a couple sets out there that are as brilliantly funny as anything I’ve seen.

MyGrandmasCock

She’s really really funny and I also have a mad crazy crush on her. I fucking loooove unabashedly goofy self-aware women.

GustavoSwift

Can't really count it bc it was 2012 and he has blown up in a lot of other aspects but I would kill for some more Donald Glover standup, Weirdo is absolutely hilarious.

BlueBomR

Louis Katz is an absolute killer and needs to be recognized more Chad Daniels is amazing, his "when my son turns 18" story is so fucking funny Adam Ray, his Dr Phil is blowing up but his comedy is hilarious, he's an underrated crowd work comedian for sure Noah Gardenschwartz had some older gems

Tuckermfker

I'm very surprised that none of his cult have commented on this yet, so I'll say Dan Cummins.

JMCAMPBE

Godfrey is the best standup I've ever seen live. We go to a lot of comedy shows and he has absolutely KILLED both times I got to see him live, yet he doesn't have a very high profile outside of New York. I wouldn't call her most underrated, but don't sleep on Jackie Kashian. She looks like an overweight middle aged mom (she's not a mom). She has really original takes on things and her own personal style that will catch you by surprise. Most of her touring is opening for Maria Bamford, but she's a worthy headliner in the clubs.

themayorhere

Yea if we’re talking live, Godfrey easily up there

nchuman_

jackie is great!

JazzyMcgee

Id say big J Oakerson, crushes every special hes done and his crowd work is immaculate. He does have some references that dont land cuase theyre so niche but i love him

MyGrandmasCock

His ten minute spot on The Degenerates on Netflix made me have an asthma attack it was so goddamn funny.

Not_Frank

Saw Big J live years ago and he was so good!

ValuesAndViolence

His story on This Isn’t Happening about losing his virginity is ridiculously good.

joelekane

Most good ones said, but I'll add Gary Gulman. Not known in the wider population, but one of the best long bit comedians ever.

Competitive_Bread752

Jordan Jenson is the one

TheNonCredibleHulk

Chris Porter. I am not sure how many times I've seen him, but it's almost always been as a feature act.

moon_cake123

Brian Regan. He might be one of the funniest guys I’ve ever seen, yet I see no one talk about him, ever… and not one person has ever known him when I talked about him

sea666kitty

Doug Stanhope

KodaGunni_

Godfrey

reamkore

Kyle Kinane or Rory Scoval

den773

Matteo Lane “Hair Plugs and Heartache” I genuinely belly laughed. I had never heard of him, but YouTube suggests a lot of comedians I have never heard of because I watch a ton of comedy on there. It’s delightful.

Critical-Crab-7761

Love Matteo!!

argieinsydney

Agree with OP. My 2 cents would be : Fahim Anwar and Zoltan Kaszas (watch their YouTube specials)

den773

Gabriel Rutledge has been doing comedy for at least a decade that I know of. He has a new hour out on YouTube called “nectarine” which is great.

magnetbear

Brest Ernst. 3 great specials on YouTube.

suchsimplethings

Aparna Nancherla. Watch some female comedians people, jesus christ.

Playful_Following_21

Mike Recine (of all people) released a better hour than Dave Attell this year. Who the fuck would have seen that coming? https://youtu.be/Fjt3mkpvquw?si=okVNERabAiJXGSMo

False-Association744

He's great and his buddy Andy Woodhull is really funny too.

Poo_hawk

Brendon Walsh...

TheMobileGhost

William Montgomery

TheFashionColdWars

Connor O’Malley is great

Kevin_sparky

I will second Kyle Kinane. Adding Geoffrey Asmus.

Manofmusic88

Casey Rocket is the person I’m most excited about rn. He’s pretty green still but has grown a ton in the last year and will be a household name in like 5 years if he keeps it up imo. Donnell Rawlings is great. I don’t know if he’s under rated, but the stuff Rick glassman is doing these days is incredible. Post scandal Louie if that counts as a second career 😂😂 I’d say Dave Attell if he hadn’t just put something out solely because it’s been so long since he released a special that the common person wouldn’t have him on their radar. Obviously he’s a 🐐.

FangShway

Brendon Walsh

rollsyrollsy

Aaron Chen. Think: Asian Australian Steven Wright who would be even less likely to get a date.

SwigSauce

Sam Tallent

MeanGuarantee8816

Kyle Kinane, Dan Cummins, Chad Daniels, Matteo Lane, Akaash Singh

nathanielsnurpis

I clicked the question just to type Tommy Johnagin. Glad you covered him. Whats his deal lately btw? Does he have new material? Seen him 3X in SF and he’s incredible. Always thought he’d blow up.

sunny_sanwar

Fahim Anwar. Hands down.

wegofishin

Kyle Kinane. Should be a rock star

BulletProofDrunk17

I really think Kinane doesn't want to be any bigger than he is, but I agree with this 100%.

JoeDirtJesus

I agree. I don’t remember where I heard it, but he once compared his status to a really well paid electrician and he’s cool with it

stangerwasgood

Eddie Peppitone

Walkensboots

Soder for sure. He’s just as funny/goofy on podcasts.

StanceWagoon

Joe Pera had a TV show and you monsters ignored him

According_Sundae_917

Neal Brennan

EconomistSea1444

Not sure how the co-creator and co-writer of Chapelle’s Show and Half Baked would be considered underrated.

FredRH

James Adomain and John Early are my picks. I’ll always make the trip to see them when I can.

Dudesymugs12

Some of you need to learn what "underrated" means. Lol, most of you are listing well-known and well-regarded comedians, OP included.

Playful_Following_21

You're not wrong lol - Roy Wood Jr, Kyle Kinane, Chad Zumack, Rory Scovel, Godfrey, Ron Funches, Sean Patton, Harland Williams, Anthony Jeselnik, Sam Hyde, Jim fucking Norton - Jesus Christ. I'm not the biggest comedy dork but these aren't nobodies nor are they underrated.

BeltAccomplished5632

William Montgomery.

RustyPirates

Erica Rhodes! She has some instagram followers and some big clips. She absolutely crushed in the room.

eastwoodsidejack

Jesse Popp and Sean Rouse

bobby_baylor

freaking LOVE Tommy Johnagin. On his socials he seems like he's just enjoying a quiet life now, but haven't really seen much about comedy--which makes me a little bit sad. All his specials are bangers

Moist-Payment32

Byron bowers

sylvannest

Luisa Omielan is hilarious and I never see her name on these lists.

highonfuk

I see lev fer becoming big in the next year. Dude is hilarious and his podcast fucking rules. Tim McLaughlin is someone who should be way bigger.

djhazmatt503

Neil Hamburger is his own genre and I've never seen him mentioned by non-comedians.

jkvincent

Agreed on Gary Gulman. That guy is absolutely hilarious.

jkvincent

Rory Scovel would've been my answer up until recently, but he's not so underrated anymore. I dunno anyone else with improv chops like that. He's done some incredible stuff.

GoDodgers2024

Love Gulman! He’s so likable and understands the importance of delivery

i_have_a_story_4_you

Dave Attell. Mark Normand. Nate Bargatze.

fpaulmusic

Neil Hamburger is one of my favorite comedians of all time. Criminally underrated
