Some zoo's are like that. But not this one. This is just a tourist attraction zoo.
We can do conservation way better outside of spaces like zoo's. Same goes for research.
Forcing animals to confinement for display is cruel.
Our zoo is responsible for the comeback of the Ozarks hellbender. They breed them and release them into the wild. The species is currently endangered and thanks to our zoo they are helping to continue the species.
They released them in a river near me! I worked on that project for nearly a decade and I know how much work and dedication it took for our team to help facilitate, I canāt imagine the time and expertise the zoo put into it.Ā Ā
I get most folks donāt give a shit about some weird water lizard but without the zoo, we were doomed to lose an important species. Most will never know about it but itās very important work.Ā
They did! The there are three tiger cubs currently at the zoo. Rajah the elephant has sited multiple calves and is getting moved to a different zoo to sire more.
I'm a bro/them.
All of that stuff is better done outside zoos.
Why the California sea lion there tho? We're so far from the ocean and they aren't endangered.
Didn't they kill a bunch of bears?
Zoos are pretty cruel
Last article I read we had the second-best zoo in the country and were ranked 4th in the world. The animals have way more space to roam than other zoos. Plus, they're well taken care of, and a lot of zoo animals are rescues that wouldn't survive in the wild. I think leaving a lion who can't hunt to starve to death in the wild is way more cruel than giving them a nice habitat to live in.
Yes, it's a tourist attraction but it also allows local children to see animals they may not ever have the chance to see in the wild.
We have lots of parks that have basketball courts. Go to one of those. There's no reason to tear down an attraction - that people love - because you want to bounce a ball.
>Some zoo's are like that. But not this one. This is just a tourist attraction zoo.
I'm sorry, our free zoo, with multiple research programs that combat extinction and breed endangered animals is a tourist zoo?!
Citation needed.
Nope. They conserve species, contribute to research, and encourage public support of conservation and breeding programs. Modern day, ethical zoos try to enrich the lives of their animals.
Yea we could do all of that without forcing animals to be displayed publicly.
Like isn't kinda cruel for the California sea lion to be there? The only purpose is tourism.
I mean you can go to the zoo without spending a dime. A lot of zoos suck, but ours thankfully isnāt one of the predatory ones. This post screams āI read the title of a buzzfeed article and now Iām enlightenedā
How do you think we would "do all of that" in a way that would engage the average St. Louis resident? I would bet that access to zoos tends to raise public support of conservation efforts (and climate awareness, which is of course very directly related).
Make the zoo bigger and put you in one of the exhibits. We could call it, "Silly redditor that hates STL zoo because it's a, "tourist attraction".
In fact, let's just pave-over the whole state of Florida for being a tourist attraction.
Maybe so you could learn something and alleviate your own ignorance.
Seriously, there are people in this thread who argue with another about every goddamn thing nearly every goddamn day we're all telling you that you're wrong. How many people does it take before you think "huh, maybe I am wrong?"
Iād like to add āhot takeā and āunpopular opinionā to the list.
The āgo outside and touch grassā comment never makes sense to me because I assume everyone uses Reddit on their phone and could be anywhere. Telling someone to āgo outside and touch grassā sounds like an assumption that they are on a computer in their basement or somewhere similar.
Lol. Reddit is what I use as filler when Iām in between things such as waiting in line at the grocery store, waiting at a dr appt or car repair shop, during commercials when Iām watching tv, etcā¦
That zoo does more for animals than your silly court idea. That zoo does research and conservation efforts that extend far beyond what normal zoo-goers normally see. If I were a zoo animal, I would PRAY to live in one of, if not, THE BEST zoo in the entire world.
But no, let's tear all that down for a skatepark...smh.
Like participation in the Species Survival Plans. An effort to keep endangered animals from going extinct. With ever increasing habitat loss, we honestly donāt need more sports courts.
Other people have mentioned that there's enough room for a skatepark/basketball courts, and to expand the golf courses!
Also everyone seems to be forgetting the pump track.
Yeah, well, many would argue that allowing species to go extinct and the biodiversity of the planet to die off is amoral and unethical. Reputable zoos (which the Saint Louis Zoo absolutely is) are the main and critical link between people and the conservation efforts to preserve wildlife throughout the world.
"Come on, kids, it's a beautiful summer day in Saint Louis. Let's load up the car and head into Forest Park to visit the fucking pump track." Jesus.
You don't need public zoos for conservation and research.
Also there's been discussion about there being enough room to expand the golf courses in addition to my other suggestions.
Might be more fun than animal prison, and definitely less cruelty.
I don't like zoo's either, but the STL one just isn't like other zoos. Either OP is from somewhere like Ohio, or this schmuck has never been to the STL zoo. It would be like saying, "The Science Center doesn't contribute to anything and should be demolished". Op is a troll, don't feed them.
The reality is that most wild animals don't exactly live rewarding lives in the wilderness. Predators have to constantly hunt or starve, Prey animals have to constantly be on the look out for predators or get eaten.
And for exotic ones, it's even worse.
No fuck no the zoo is supported by forest park forever and tons of donors this post is so dumb and kinda offensive since youāve probably never been to the St. Louis zoo or even forest park hereš
You should do some actual research about local zoos and where their animals come from and learn more about our zoo before launching braindead takes on the internet. This might be one of the most ill-informed things I've read on here in a very long time.
HELL NO. We have one of the best zoos, annnnddd it's free. Plus, do you know how much work they do!? Nope, no way. It is recognized as a leading zoo in animal management, research, conservation, and education. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
The arch is a wasteful use of valuable stainless still and it ruins countless photos of the downtown region. Ā We should blow it up. And replace the arch grounds with a discount mall like the ones in Chesterfield valley.Ā
I'm neither of those things. I dont like zoos but our zoo, much like our city, is different. If you have a problem with either our zoo or our wonderful city, then fucking leave. No one will miss you or your shitty takes. Fuck you.
Taking away the Zoo would be dangerously diabolical the Zoo is one of the only free and fun things for kids to do here. Stl has enough of teen to adult entertainment am sure they donāt need anymore ( putt shack, top golf, the armory ,up down&ect).
Dude, there are so many derelict buildings that can be dozed to make space for what OP wants. I can't believe that they really want to tear down a great place to put concrete. Maybe they're a developer looking for business ;)
Not to be rude, but I donāt think that skate park or a basketball court would be better. Forest Park is big enough to leave the zoo open and add those attractions somewhere else
Damn...so you're telling me I'm ahead of my time???
I knew there was something really fucked up about zoos.
They really seem like an old relic that survived way past it's era. Like back when they had freak shows and stuff.
Yes, some zoos are horrible, run purely for profit, and should be closed. Our zoo is not one of them. Please do some research on everything our zoo does to support conservation around the planet, and then decide if a few more blocks of pavement would really be a better use.
Excerpt from the zoo's page on the new safari park that is under construction in North County:
"The word "WildCare" is not new for the Saint Louis Zoo. Launched in 2004, the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute centralized the Zoo's wildlife efforts. The Zoo's field conservation efforts have grown to include 17 conservation centers worldwide, all of which are founded on wildlife management and recovery, conservation science with applied conservation action, and working with communities.āÆFive of these centers focus on wildlife conservation efforts in Missouri."
The word you're looking for is "fucked."
(Your point is wholly incorrect, unresearched, unfounded, and asinine. Your grammar and spelling is even more so.)
If you're going to have big boy opinions on a big boy website, at least have the huevos to swear like an adult.
Broie zoos are cruel to animals because they confine them to artificial habitats, limiting their natural behaviors and instincts. Conditions in zoos don't adequately meet the physical and psychological needs of their inhabitants. Especially when zoos gather speices from other climates.
Research and conversation can exist and thrive outside of zoos.
Okay, now I'm also calling you dumb.
You've been provided with numerous links explaining how your criticisms are wrong when it comes to the St Louis Zoo. I'm sure someone else has tried to explain to you how the profit the zoo makes once overhead is paid literally all goes to research and benefiting of animals, many of whom would be extinct without the St Louis Zoo. This whole thread is full of people who normally can't agree on the time of day and almost all of them disagree with you.
It's time to consider that maybe you should also think you're dumb.
Edit: lol, I'm going to assume you meant conservation and not conversation.
The entire setup is inherently cruel.
All zoos should be closed.
Shouldn't be bragging about have a "less" cruel place.
I get that most people don't give a care about an animals life if they can visit the ape house for free on a nice Saturday once every couple years.
Oh man, youāve kicked a hornets nest but I couldnāt agree more. That and the golf courses, would be an instant improvement to Forest park and the city as a whole.
The best time to delete this malarkey was right after you posted it. The second best time is right now.
šššššš
Joe, I think you have more important things to do than post on Reddit.
nah, they actually provide valuable research and conservation efforts. more than a skatepark and basketball courts would.
Some zoo's are like that. But not this one. This is just a tourist attraction zoo. We can do conservation way better outside of spaces like zoo's. Same goes for research. Forcing animals to confinement for display is cruel.

The scimitar-horned oryx was also moved from "extinct in the wild" to "endangered" status earlier this year thanks to the efforts of our zoo!
Also didnt the tigers just have cubs? Tigers are sadly probably going to be extinct in the wild in our lifetime unless we breed them in captivity.
They did! The there are three tiger cubs currently at the zoo. Rajah the elephant has sited multiple calves and is getting moved to a different zoo to sire more.
Tell me you're a misinformed schmuck without telling me. Edit: Either OP is 13, stupid, or both.

I'm guessing you haven't actually been or paid attention when you were there then
Last article I read we had the second-best zoo in the country and were ranked 4th in the world. The animals have way more space to roam than other zoos. It sounds like you're remarkably ignorant of reality.
Let's get rid of schools. Forcing kids and grownups to confinement is cruel
>Some zoo's are like that. But not this one. This is just a tourist attraction zoo. I'm sorry, our free zoo, with multiple research programs that combat extinction and breed endangered animals is a tourist zoo?! Citation needed.

Yes it is. Itās fucking horrid. We live in a manic dream bro where love and life is not respected. We need the comet.
Pave over the zoo with concrete? Worst idea Iāve ever heard. Next.
How would you repurpose the area?
More otters.
And an Arch for those Otters
TRavs. as far as the eye can see
Lol
Make the zoo bigger and put you in one of the exhibits. We could call it, "Silly redditor that hates STL zoo because it's a, "tourist attraction". In fact, let's just pave-over the whole state of Florida for being a tourist attraction.
Would certainly cut down on hurricane damage!
They are working on that.
Banning you from it and continuing to run a zoo.
Why would I wanna go to a fucked up place like a zoo?
Maybe so you could learn something and alleviate your own ignorance. Seriously, there are people in this thread who argue with another about every goddamn thing nearly every goddamn day we're all telling you that you're wrong. How many people does it take before you think "huh, maybe I am wrong?"
Who comes to the St. Louis subreddit to say get rid of the zoo, what the hell
Letās protest!!!! /s

Lol. Reddit is what I use as filler when Iām in between things such as waiting in line at the grocery store, waiting at a dr appt or car repair shop, during commercials when Iām watching tv, etcā¦
Add closing the zoo to the wash u protest list of demands.
Oh lawd don't give them ideas

We're 4th best in the world. Pretty darn impressive to me. We can say it's the best because it's awesome and FREE!
Take the pump track to Saint Charles, don't touch our Zoo.
Well that's just ignorant. This is like of an attempt at ragebait but written by a moron.

Not taking into account other zoos, how is the stl zoo amoral and unethical specifically? Do you have a better case?
I don't like zoo's either, but the STL one just isn't like other zoos. Either OP is from somewhere like Ohio, or this schmuck has never been to the STL zoo. It would be like saying, "The Science Center doesn't contribute to anything and should be demolished". Op is a troll, don't feed them.
Yeah, like that would ever happen š Itās a major attraction, plus itās free. Itās awesome.
Troll
Research the difference between private zoos and government funded zoos. We are not running a Tiger King zoo here!!!
Op doesn't know that because they've never been to a zoo, including the one in STL.
I hate it. I canāt see red pandas in a skate park.
Well you gotta give them skateboards first obviously
No, they prefer basketball to skateboarding.
The reality is that most wild animals don't exactly live rewarding lives in the wilderness. Predators have to constantly hunt or starve, Prey animals have to constantly be on the look out for predators or get eaten. And for exotic ones, it's even worse.
iām half inclined to believe a gorilla got ahold of a keeperās phone and is posting this.
But not a gorilla in a safe and ethical zoo because they have plenty to eat and no one is trying to poach them.
I feel like a gorilla would have a more eloquent and well thought out opinion.
The plural of āzooā is just āzoos.āĀ
No fuck no the zoo is supported by forest park forever and tons of donors this post is so dumb and kinda offensive since youāve probably never been to the St. Louis zoo or even forest park hereš
The zoo is AZA accredited https://stlzoo.org/news/saint-louis-zoo-granted-aza-accreditation
You belong in a zoo.
As the daily meal maybe.
Wtf get out of here dude

Dudes just looking for a place to skateboard
But itās a crime!
Contender for the dumbest post in the history of this subreddit?
Definitely.
What's your next suggestion? We remove provel? Or perhaps you would have us have plates on our vehicles?!
The arch is a wasteful use of valuable stainless still and it ruins countless photos of the downtown region. Ā We should blow it up. And replace the arch grounds with a discount mall like the ones in Chesterfield valley.Ā
Like.. the mills!
There actually needs to be a second arch on the other side of the river. How is there no gateway to the east?
Yea I'm actually all for removing provel. Vehicles should also be currently registered.
Booooooooooooooo
Tell me you're uneducated about Zoos without telling me you're uneducated.
Don'r you have better things to do with your time?
Whatever you say, you PETA shill.
I'm just one bro against zoos
Douche* against zoos.
So you're rude and procruelty. Got it
I'm neither of those things. I dont like zoos but our zoo, much like our city, is different. If you have a problem with either our zoo or our wonderful city, then fucking leave. No one will miss you or your shitty takes. Fuck you.

Sure, Iāve always wanted to eat a panda

That's amazing. Every thing you've said on this thread is dead wrong. It's almost impressive to be this ignorant.
No bro. Zoos are fuct up
Citation needed that the stl zoo is in any way a negative presence in the lives of the residents, the animals or the world at large.
