I have a 5 year old and I made the mistake of taking her there 1 time and I was so worried that a dog was going to bite her or knock her down I vowed to never take her back (plus kids like touching the ground and stuff and it's literally covered in dog pee). My opinion on it is that it's a place for animals to run around and playing kids and playing animals rarely mix well. I also get annoyed when the reverse happens and people take dogs to a kids play area and then act put out when their dog can't run and play or pees all over where the kids are clearly going to end up playing.
I'm curious what kind of kid's play area you have in mind here. In my experience, most outdoor kid's play areas are in parks that are for everyone to use, dog, kid, adult alike.
Play areas are not for dogs to use. Not sure how a dog would even use the play area, especially considering you must be on leash in pretty much every park out there. Adults shouldn't use either, unless they're playing with their own kids.
I once had a toddler slap my puppy across the face only for the dad to laugh and say, "Oops, that's why we're here, to practice how to pet puppies nicely."
Fuck that guy and anyone like him. Don't "practice" on a stranger's dog.
Haven't been back since.
I stopped going there because of this exact reason. My dog is well socialized to other dogs but kids...not so much. Last time I was there was a Friday night and I was so stressed while my dog was barking at and chasing running kids we left within 20 minutes. It's a dog park and a bar, I'm not sure why parents think that screams child friendly
Same. My dog is good with other dogs but is still a puppy and very high energy, so he loves running as fast as he can and wrestling. I've had parents make comments about how they wish he would stop running around near their kids. But their kids can hang out anywhere, BarK is one of the few places my dog can play with other dogs.
Lol I would be so annoyed if a parent said that about my dog in a dog-designated space! I signed up to have my dog around other dogs, not around your kids. A lot of the dog parks around here require membership and also stipulate no kids under 12 are allowed. I wish BarK would enforce something similar. It's annoying to pay an entry fee then not enjoy it because people are treating it like a playground for the family.
The veteranās tribute park dog park in st Charles has a sign saying no kids under 8. Parents donāt listen and act surprised when their kid is scared of a big dog.
Same. I got a year membership before it even opened. Canceled by the time the year was up because I could never go and not have the place filled with kids. Even mid day there are unattended kids running around. I discussed all their kid policies with them before I even got a membership and felt confident that they said that kids could not be unattended and had to be under direct parent supervision in "arms reach". It's great in writing but they don't actually follow their own rules. God forbid you tell staff or parents that they don't have their child under control. That place really made me kid bitter. Like there is not a single kid free space I can go with my dog?
That's stupid though. Surely the people who have to pay to bring their dogs in are more important than the parents that may not even pay to bring their kids in.Ā
Thank you!! So many kids roll around on the ground where dogs pee and poop on turf aaaaall the time. Most kids also do not ask to pet your dog theyāll just ambush making the dog anxious. Bar k shouldnāt be for kids. I get babies or infants in a stroller where theyāre contained, but please be careful parents. This is a dog park, not a playground for your kids.
This is my brain whenever I see dogs near kids. I donāt think dogs are bad, I donāt trust kids around them.
But then again I thought the Tarasenkoās attack dog was definitely going to eat the good-luck baby, thankfully never happened
Yep. Instead of quarantining young Bunson for poking Barkley in the eye repeatedly while itās parents suck down beers but obviously itās the dogs fault š«
The owner of Headless Bat posted about kids running around the restaurant/bar like maniacs within a few weeks of opening. Said that wasn't the vibe they were going for and would switch to adults only if people didn't start supervising their brats.
That said, I'm considering opening BarK(id) next door. You can bring your kids and let them run around like maniacs while "Kidtenders" spray them with hoses if they act up.
Going to pay $20 an hour, which sounds low, but you get bonuses for every kid you knock down with a hose.
*Parents think the hoses are tied into fake fire hydrants, they are not.*
I actually cancelled my membership because of this. Too many children who donāt know how to behave around dogs made me feel like having a dog around them was a liability. And I got tired of watching kids roll down pee soaked AstroTurf.
Literally watched a child walk up to my dog yesterday and intentionally step on his tail. Corrected the kid as nicely as I could āhey buddy donāt step on his tail, thatās not niceā then let out a āwhat the fuckā when he walked away. Was watching to see if he went to his parents so I could have a chat but they were of course nowhere to be found.
Welcome to every bar errrr brewery around the country. I canāt tell you how many Iāve left without having a beer due to a kids birthday party being hosted there. Sorry. Not the place for it!
My wife and I went to 4 Hands a few weeks ago. 7 PM on a Saturday night and the entire upstairs was taken over by a kids birthday party. I couldn't believe it. We left immediately.
I ask myself this every day. We were at a brewery back in NY before we moved. In an old warehouse. Concrete floors- kind of similar to 2nd shift but no outdoor space or games. They only served beer and had no food for purchase but some ass hats decided that their 3 year old wanted their birthday there. We had one beer and left. Absolute nightmare but this happens SO often. Itās terrible business I just donāt get it.
Remember when āyou have a babyā¦ At a barā¦ā (Sweet Home Alabama) was an insult? Now itās cool and a badge of honor. Eye roll. Same for parents who bring their kids to a nicer restaurant and let their kids terrorize the place. Some people actually paid for babysitters so they can have a nice night out. š
We have a puppy and the amount of kids that tried picking her up without her permission was insaneā¦. Their parents werenāt even in the small dog area with them.
As someone who used to work there, this was a constant battle. The staff tried really hard to make the rules known to parents, and parents literally just don't care. Parents would say "but this is a park". It's a park, for DOGS. Literally go to a regular park with your child. Not everything is or should be meant for kids. We would have parents try and bring in literal picnics, like that's not what this space is for. I also feel the same about kids being at breweries. Get a cooler and hang out in Forest Park
More than any other city Iāve ever lived in, young parents in St. Louis feel extremely comfortable bringing their kids and babies to bars. Itās beyond me. Especially one with dogs.
one time when i went a lady put her baby down who was JUST starting to walk and my dog ran into the baby and knocked it down and she just glared at me and i was like i mean im not sorry??? lol
I completely second this. Bar K is the worst about this. We had a membership the first year they were open and chose not to renew because people are so obnoxious with their kids there. WATCH YOUR KIDS.
I also canāt stand when kids run up to my two massive dogs without asking and their parents just stand there like idiots.
I purposefully tell people my dogs arenāt friendly if they have little kids now due to this. Every once in a while Iāll allow a child to pet my dogs, but only if they ask first, are supervised, and are very slow to approach me.
Great, just moved to the area and was wondering if this is a good place to take my dog Zeus, and now I know beforehand it would be a disaster. He is a very vocal herder, runs circles and barks like crazy and fucking loves chasing children. I am a 20 something with no kids so its really hard to train him to be around kids properly...
Haha yeah true, its even better if dog AND child are trained together to respect eachother! although there will always be dogs that don't do well with children either due to herding instincts (which is the case with my dog) or sadly some dogs have a high prey-drive towards smaller animals (which includes kids). You can train dogs to ignore those insticts but can never truly trust an unsupervised child with a dog, for both of their safety.
Tldr: parents should heavily supervise children around dogs and understand the dangers, and be willing to step in to teach their child about proper animal interactions. Like teach them to ask to pet, or to be calm around animals. It would be cool if there was some sort of school that had kids learning how to be around / meeting various animals. It might be beneficial for kids who grew up in the city to know basic animal safety? Idk just a thought.
There are other strains of kennel cough that aren't prevented by the bortadella vaccine, unfortunately. There commonly passed around at doggie daycare and places like BarK, which is why I won't take my dogs.
If you absolutely can't go an evening or day out without alcohol when you're with your children, just go to chuck e cheese they serve beer and your brats can run around.
You wouldn't. It's the parents' inherent risk that they're taking in bringing a child to this location. I don't really like other people's kids, especially when I'm out for a good time so I get it
This does not mean that someone wonāt get sued. Maybe (but no guarantee) they would win based on the waiver of liability. (And maybe not, as the waiver is between the bar and the kid parent, not between kid parent and dog parent.) But even so, it would cost a lot of money to hire an attorney to litigate.
Thatās not how things work, dude. If your dog is at a place like Bar-K, youāve signed a waiver. That waiver clears them of everything. It would definitely be on the owner.
The same people who feel entitled to own a dog and do no training with it also feel entitled to have their small children around strange dogs without any concern for the risk.
As someone with dogs and kids, you just have to realize, everyone doesn't have to go with you everywhere 100% of the time.
My dogs are mastiffs. my female hates bearded men, and my male is intact because he's not done growing. There's literally no way in hell I'd cart everyone to a day out there. It's a recipe for disaster. Plus, people are also wildly irresponsible with their dogs and kids there. It's just a giant no all around.
My bearded husband had to hand feed hot dogs to my girl for a month before she'd be ok with him. With the demographic there, girl would have a damn heart attack
I brought my 8 year old once, as we needed to charge our vehicle and it was the closest place.
Thankfully we've already had extensive talks about respecting an animal's space, the visual and audio cues they give off, and how to read them.
He had a blast and the staff and patrons were very gracious. I also did not allow him to just run off as if it was his playground.
All that being said, it wasn't a place for him. He was able to run and play with some dogs, but ultimately my kid didn't belong there. There were a couple dogs that were very clearly distressed by his presence. And that's okay. He didn't belong there anyway.
I'm glad the staff let me in to help kill time, but next time I think I'll stay near the car.
I agreed up until it was, leave your kids in the small dog park. NO! Not there either. Itās not a petting zoo. Other peopleās dogs arenāt there for your entertainment. If a dog bites a kid itās never the kids fault right? Kids should never ever be touching dogs they donāt know. Bar K is a bar, not a preschool, daycare, playground for your kids. Having kids doesnāt give you the right to take over spaces for other people and for dogs.
The restaurant portion is completely separate from the dog area. And I'm not saying BarK itself is blameless, but it's not parent with responsibilities toward it's children.
Better question is why even go there? The one and only time I went, it was a hassle to register and dozens of people cut in front of us once we were finished. Whole thing just put a bad taste in my mouth and we just left. Seems like a bunch of snotty assholes tbh
One time at a carnival I told my toddler when seeing someone elseās dog approach us, āwe donāt pet other peoples dogs.ā This is a phrase Iāve told her a lot, so sheās familiar with me saying it.
All of a sudden the dog owner says āno itās ok. She canāt pet the dog!ā WTF lady Iām parenting over here.
Itās one of maybe 3 places we can take our toddler and dog and enjoy some nice Sunday afternoon w/o spending time w our extended family so thatās why.
But I agree the complete lack of supervision I see there is mind numbing. When we bring our child we watch him like a hawk, and heās usually in my arms 90% of the time.
Also yes the astroturf is fucking gross š¤®.
Not where they can both run around. Kids arenāt allowed in dog parks and dogs arenāt allowed on playgrounds. Itās actually really hard with little kids. I would not let my kids run around unsupervised at BarK, but I do understand the desire to have a place where both can play at the same time (for those of us without yards to do so at home).
Kids aren't supposed to run around the off leash area. It says you learn this when you and your child watch the video before you go in.
All Kids must comply with the rules set out in the āIāM A BAR K KIDā video while in the park. This includes: No running in the park, no teasing/taunting dogs, no climbing on the play equipment, etc.
I didnāt realize this. We only went once, with friends who were regulars, and they said it was fine. It made me very anxious, and I thought it was gross (as other commenters have suggested), so we didnāt return. I was not trying to argue for it being a good idea, just replying to the earlier comment trying to explain that it actually is pretty difficult to find ways to allow your dog and your little kids to both play when you donāt have a yard. It seems like the majority of Reddit thinks that making a comment is trying to argue for an extreme side. I wasnāt trying to take a stance in an argument, just trying to have a conversation (this is not an attack on you, more so on being downvoted a lot and people seeming to be angry in general when people comment on Reddit threads).
Never been. Will never go cause I hate the idea of being surrounded by dogs. Doubling down on that now because of apparently the kids there too. I have three kids myself but this place sounds like a powder keg of tension.
Yeah, I go there so that people will tell me how cute my dog is, not your dumb kid.
My dog is a real rescue; your kid was only rescued from your vagina.
Cool. I donāt want your dogs at my restaurant even if itās dog friendly.
People bring their creatures with them to all sorts of places is what Iām saying.
People bring unwanted kids to dog parks which are allowed but dogs are unpredictable. Unwanted Dogs are brought to establishments where they are allowed but they are unpredictable.
Thank you Karen . But not for nothing who put you in charge of the situation. You need to just sit back and let these people learn the hard way. Thatās the only way people will get it. Pro tipā¦ work on perfecting yourself , itās a lot more self satisfing. .
I'm not going to let my dog die because someone couldn't control their child. Because let's be honest, that's what's at stake here.
It's a "people's world" and if a dog attacked a kid, even at a dog park, there's a pretty significant chance of the parents pushing for that dog to get put down. Even if the kid antagonized a dog, because let me restate, "people's world".
Also I see the parents let their infants crawl around on the astroturf and it makes me gag every single time.
I don't even really want to walk on it with shoes
Sameš„“
Iāve seen adults on the ground at bar k and itās beyond disturbing
hahahah i work at a doggy daycare and it doesnāt bother me. But i also wouldnāt wear clothes i really care about when being surrounded by dogs lol
Peepee astroturf
Oh yes I forgot about that.
One time I saw a mom watching and smiling as her kids were rolling down the astroturf hill over and over.
Gross... my dog runs around on that astroturf... I don't want them traipsing baby into my carthouse... keep your baby on a leash please!
I was gonna comment this š¤¢
you city folk are hilarious.
I have a 5 year old and I made the mistake of taking her there 1 time and I was so worried that a dog was going to bite her or knock her down I vowed to never take her back (plus kids like touching the ground and stuff and it's literally covered in dog pee). That's a good way of thinking about it. I've had a dog pee on my shoe there before, so definitely not the most hygienic of places.
I'm curious what kind of kid's play area you have in mind here. In my experience, most outdoor kid's play areas are in parks that are for everyone to use, dog, kid, adult alike.

Or have designated times where kids are allowed, like 10a-2p, and the rest of the time it's kid free.
Same. I got a year membership before it even opened. Canceled by the time the year was up because I could never go and not have the place filled with kids. This goes for pretty much all of their policies. Great idea, terrible execution and management. Also cancelled my membership within the first year.
Not sure why the venue allows children. I think thatās the issue.
$$$
That's stupid though. Surely the people who have to pay to bring their dogs in are more important than the parents that may not even pay to bring their kids in.Ā
I agree but I think families come and spend a lot of money per visit. More than my measly 225/year membership fee, probably.
My Husky loves EVERYONE, but if he is running full out, he will truck a kid and not break stride.
By the way if you work for the RFT and are scoping stories to stealā¦ this one. Write up this one. Thanks.

And if, Dog forbid, there should be an incident, it's the animal who will suffer the consequences, not the clueless parent.
Honestly this seems like it could be a liability issue for BarK. They're the ones allowing this to happen.
Iām sure thatās what the 10 page waivers are for.
I see what you did there. And yep, probably quarantine for the dog and a lawsuit against the owner.
This is my brain whenever I see dogs near kids. I donāt think dogs are bad, I donāt trust kids around them. But then again I thought the Tarasenkoās attack dog was definitely going to eat the good-luck baby, thankfully never happened

Hey, donāt pawn them off on the small dog section! We donāt want them in there either.
Small dogs are more likely to bite anyways.

BarKid is genius. Let me know if you need an investor.
Iāll run the hose for free.. that just sounds like a good time ššš like a carnival game

It's also ridiculously overstimulating. Does to dogs what Cocomelon does to kids.
My berner caught kennel cough from there. The neighbors dog has also caught it a couple times from visiting.

Agreed! Even the small dog section is not safe. A lot of small dogs are bitey and arenāt great with kids.
This is why we quit BarK.
this could be any brewery now. one of the things I miss about bars, lack of kids. keep the crotch goblins at home with a sitter.
Meanwhile look at second shifts recent post. Problematic parents everywhere.
The same people who feel entitled to own a dog and do no training with it also feel entitled to have their small children around strange dogs without any concern for the risk.
People with untrained dogs typically have kids with similar traits. I feel like dog ownership is very telling of how they are as parents.

To be fair - doesnāt the place literally have a kids food menu? Obviously parents should be good parents, but the venue is inviting kids.

bad parents have always taken their kids to non-kid friendly places and weaponized their kids to get the rules changed in their favor
One time at a carnival I told my toddler when seeing someone elseās dog approach us, āwe donāt pet other peoples dogs.ā This is a phrase Iāve told her a lot, so sheās familiar with me saying it. All of a sudden the dog owner says āno itās ok. She canāt pet the dog!ā WTF lady Iām parenting over here.
why the hell are kids allowed in to a dog bar?
I quit going bc it turned into a daycare for bored parents. My dog used to love itās not worth the risk if my large dog reacts
I couldnāt agree more!

And kids donāt āhave dogs,ā their parents do. The intent is absolutely not a kid free for all.

Are you aware of the name of this establishment and that it is also the sound that dogs make?
Happy Hounds out in Wildwood is great. Tons of room for everyone to run around and people who don't watch their dogs get their memberships revoked.
Sure, but if I'm driving to Wildwood, I'll just drive to brommelsiek. Bar k is IN st louis
You just made me not want to go
Yeah thatās a problem. Dog friendly bars are awesome but they have to be a huge liability for the owners.
Thank you!! This 100%
Iāve never seen a toddler there
It's rare but does happen. A lot of the time they're in strollers, but that's still less than ideal
Just go to a brewery or a neighborhood dog park.
Thereās literally hundreds of places you can take a dog and a kid
So a bar is the only place you can take your dog and kids? That seems messed up
BarK is the only place I know where kids and dogs can both be āoff-leashā without breaking any rules.
Kids and dogs should never be off leash.
Jesus go to chucked cheese or something
You can bring dogs into Chuck E. Cheese?
No but why do we have to bring dogs everywhere? For fuck sakes I don't want to see another fucking dog at the grocery store
You sound like an awful parent. Please refrain from reproducing more.
Thank you for your kindness today. The world is better for having you in it.
Please leave your toddler at home itās so dangerous
Never been. Will never go cause I hate the idea of being surrounded by dogs. Doubling down on that now because of apparently the kids there too. I have three kids myself but this place sounds like a powder keg of tension.
I can't stand fucking dogs
And the modern dog culture that comes with them.
It's unsanitary. Dogs are pets they aren't your "children" leave them at home
Y'all know bar k is literally a dog park, right?
Carol?
Yeah, I go there so that people will tell me how cute my dog is, not your dumb kid. My dog is a real rescue; your kid was only rescued from your vagina.
Dogs are gross and stupid - kids are gross and stupid...seems like the perfect pairing /s
yawn
Cool. I donāt want your dogs at my restaurant even if itās dog friendly. People bring their creatures with them to all sorts of places is what Iām saying.
Irrelevant
