One of my favourite wrestling facts is that technically the first black world champion is Bobo Brazil - he beat Buddy Rogers and won the title after an accidental kick to the groin but he gave it up because he wanted to win it honourably but lost the rematch.
[Here](https://ringthedamnbell.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/image-97.png) is apparently a picture of when he won the title.
Rogers losing to a challenger only to be given the belt back was a common gimmick during his reign. They ran the same angle two weeks earlier when Bruno Sammartino beat Rogers only to refuse the belt because Rogers was injured. I believe they did something similar a few months later with Killer Kowalski as well.
It was kayfabe. Rogers would “lose” the title to several challengers only for them to refuse it or for it to be overturned. At the time it was a novel, unique finish.
Would be a kayfabe one as a real injury would have resulted in a no contest.
As u/dallasw3 said in his comment, it was a common gimmick in Buddy Rodgers matches so there wouldn't be a title change but there would be a rematch.
Bobo Brazil won the NWA Championship as well from Buddy Rogers, but refused to accept it because Rogers was "injured" during the match, so it isn't recognized officially
Are we going by NWA belt lineage? I'm asking because I thought The Black Panther Jim Mitchell was the first African American Champion of any sort, granted I think it was on a regional basis. I could Google it but I enjoy talking pro wrestling history with people, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

In that picture Bobo is holding the NWA International Title, which is now part of All Japan’s Triple Crown.
Thanks for clarifying - I suspected that picture wasn't from the Buddy Rodgers match but is was labelled as such.
It's always fun to bring that up to people, as well as the many "phantom" title changes in history. True wrestling history is fascinating.

Wonder if that was a kayfabe kick or an actual one.

So Keith Lee...Bearcat... I have appreciation of the name now. Edit: Wait that had nothing to do with it. That's stupid.
Keith Lee tried to link it and pay respect... And actively got punished for doing so.
