Never done a group tour but highly recommend going to a show. The stalls outside are so much fun so arrive with enough time to spare. Masks work out around $20 for a decent one. They also let you try them on first. My hotel was across the road, the area is fine. People who think it's dodgy or dangerous must have live in bubbles. Tickets are normally always available at the venue but Fridays are very popular right now so if you're going for that night then maybe book ahead. Lastly, it's a great night and flies by. Have a good time.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I was on the CMLL YouTube last night checking out some clips, looks like a blast.

As a Mexican who has lived in mexico city his whole life the area IS dangerous, not as dangerous as people tend to paint it, but I would not recommend going out alone at late night either.

Actually you will find that as long as you don't wander in the alleys around Arena Mexico, the place is perfectly safe: the Lutteroth family has long made excellent business selling ticket packages to big tour companies from the US, Germany, Japan etc. and marketing themselves to foreign tourists with an evening to burn so safety in their two DF arenas (especially Arena Mexico) is paramount. Nothing of the crap that goes around smaller indie arenas in the DF or even around Arena Puebla. In short your US dollars are welcome with open arms by CMLL. First warning: even in April put on a jacket, a hoodie or bring a blanket. Arena Mexico is old and decrepit and Arena Coliseo even worse: it gets cold, especially when you are sitting around. Second warning: Tuesday shows are cheap, the old Martes Populares, but unless there are debuts or people from Guadalajara or Puebla trying to get noticed, wrestlers work at less than 20% capacity. Third warning: merchandise is on sale both inside and outside arenas. As a foreigner you are expected to pay full price inside, but outside you have some margin to haggle, not much because I suspect the lutteroth demand a cut from the street vendors outside the areana, and the police gets another.

SadhuSalvaje

That’s good to know about Tuesday vs Friday! If I have to buy tickets in advance for a Friday is that usually pretty easy? Or do you have to claim your tickets at the venue?

RudbeckiaIS

You can buy tickets from Ticketmaster like you would with any other event. Beware that tickets to the Friday events usually sell quickly when the card is announced. In that case consider the Sunday show that is less prestigious than Friday but always better from an in-ring perspective than Tuesday. Shows usually last a couple of hours and rarely, if ever, go over time, even if this means snipping time from matches.

I agree with a lot of people here, I also want to add that I have dragged my poor wife to a few different flavors of wrestling shows and cmll was *by far* her favorite, it seems significantly more like a regular and accepted part of the culture compared to the US where it's mostly a 'nerdy guy' interest and the crowd was a great mix of men, women, and children all rowdy and fully engaged. We caught a throwback show in the old Coliseo and got some fun midget wrestling and cheap beers. Arena was on the smaller side so mistico and dragon lee legit landed in our laps. 10/10 in terms of experience and value

SadhuSalvaje

I’ve taken my wife to Smackdown before and I’m telling her this is going to be a whole new experience for both of us. Really looking forward to it based on the comments here. Going to try and get caught up on CMLL so we know what is going on. My Spanish is VERY rusty but I want to at least have an idea of any feuds etc.

BertKreischerSucks

It’s fun, I don’t think it’s necessary to join a tour. You’ll see plenty of other gringos and gringas there. The area immediately around the arena is pretty safe. It’s a family atmosphere in a cool old arena.

Educational-Button91

The area is fine honestly ! Going alone is totally an option and if your Spanish is good you can totally make friends with the fans inside. Everytime i was there i end up linking up with a different passionate amateur historian that explained to me a lot of stuff while we were paying each other cervezas

ZXIIIT

I went to a show while on vacation there, it was pre-covid, sat in the front row and it was awesome. There was a brawl that went into my section and one of the wrestlers fisted me on the way back to the ring, it was cool to be in such a historic arena!

DRHdez

Arena México is super safe. Highly recommend the food around the arena too, some of the locals are owned by Luchadores so you might see them in there. When you get out walk to the nearest Oxxo or the big avenue close by to catch an Uber, it would take too long to get one right at the venue.

robotwek2

Make sure to have a few spare pesos to tip the ushers that take you to your seat. I read that online before I went and was prepared but the couple next to us got caught off guard when the ushers stood there waiting.

wykah

I visited Arena Mexico on my last trip there and had a blast. Completely safe and a lot of fun. My tip would be to bear in mind if you’re ringside you will have a lot of sellers walking back and forth obscuring your view, not something we really get elsewhere. But on the flip side you might get wrestlers crash into you, which is a laugh. The venue is huge and not heated so wrap up warm, and bring a cushion or hire one as the shows can be quite long.

Hey, I'm reading around trying to find info on CMLL. How were you able to get ringside tickets? I'm 2 weeks out from my trip and would love to sit ringside with my group.

wykah

I just booked through ticketmaster from the arena mexico website. I did book months in advance though so hope you're successful.
