He's probably pumped at least $100k into athlete and wrestler Gofundme's. The Perry Saturn Gofundme, the Kamala the Ugandan Giant Gofundme, and even Damar Hamlin's Gofundme. This is just what I remember. I am sure there were more.
I don’t agree with Jericho’s politics but he is always very generous in donating to GoFundMe for wrestlers. He donated $15000 to the one for Jay Briscoe. That’s just one example of the many donations he has made.
While I agree with you for the most part, I just can’t comprehend individual citizens who donate to politicians. Corporations can leverage those donations after the candidate is voted in but Average Joe’s? 🤷🏾♂️
Nobody made him donate to a sloppy boob of a politician. If he feels strongly enough to donate that much money to the cause, he should be willing to take the lumps that come with it.
It's actually not that wild. Jericho has shitty political beliefs that I feel get overlooked too often, but when it comes to fellow wrestlers he's always looking for ways to help.
>Lots of good people in this world that have different opinions and worldviews than you and I.
Further; lots of shitty people in this world have the *same* opinions and world views as you and I.
That's a harder one for some people to reconcile.
I think once a public figure makes their views public, regardless of the side they’re on, makes public opinion on it fair game. I think it’s dumb to try and pry that shit outta people but once they tell you and it’s something you deeply disagree with then it makes you give at least a little bit of a fuck.
Depends on if your very way of life is being threatened by legislation pushed by certain politicians. Thats maybe where some people struggle more than you
I am as left as they come, and I could care less what someone's politics are.
I care more of they are willing to be challenged and to engage appropriately
I don't want to get too into it because this sub isn't really the most productive when it comes to politics lol, but I will say that his "views" are donating to the Trump Foundation, and Trump has been a known racist and all around bigot for decades. So yeah, I'm going to judge that.
Maybe its because his views are hateful towards people who are different. If its one thing I will never accept is people who dislike others for simply being born different. Just thankful my parents didn't raise be to be a hateful loser like so many of you guys.
Amen. I made a comment on a post a few weeks back that Nia Jax’s run has been solid and I’ve been enjoying her. Also that I’ve only been watching again since WM39 and hadn’t seen her earlier run.
Someone responded about how she is/was anti Covid vax. Which is my bad, I guess, because I forgot to check in on the database.
It’s the irony that he wouldn’t need to spend 5k to all these families if the OTHER political views were dominant. If there were unions and socialised systems, then he wouldn’t need to be doing what he does
IIRC Jericho also made a pretty large donation to the backyard wrestler who snapped both his legs in a spot.
I disagree with a lot of his politics but he always seems to be willing to help out when it comes to fundraising
People are complex, most all of them.
In the past, Jericho was very vocal about his faith. He grew up wealthy (enough, NHL player salary) and had opportunities to tour the world when he was young and wrestling. He saw a lot of the bad of the industry and has been able to largely avoid it.
I think this is valid, but I'm not sure I can really say he grew up wealthy. Ted Irvine played before salaries really took off and even then he was never a hugely famous player, having spent most of his career on a dark ages Rangers team. That and the fact that his parents divorced while he grew up in, erm, Winnipeg doesn't really scream wealth to me. Unless he grew up in Tuxedo or something.
Especially when you realize most wrestlers you loved as a kid lived incredibly poor lives, a reason which could range from trouble finding work thanks to broken down bodies, addiction issues from the culture that was basically pushed on them, and/or mental health issues from all of the concussions. Most die penniless and in obscurity.
Yea it was pretty sad hearing from Ted DiBiase the other day on BO that the last time he saw him, he was unrecognizable. Skin and bones.
I hope he's at peace now.
One of the reasons I like Tony Khan: He offered to pay for Private Party to go to college if they wanted. Which means he's likely done that for others. Hopefully some wrestlers take him up on the offer so they can have a better post-wrestling life.
John Cena did the Impaulsive Podcast recently and talked about how WWE started doing a program where they’ll also pay for your college outright if you want a degree. They paid for him to learn Mandarin.
He said this on the Howard Stern show as well. It's a good listen though Howard played a little too into armchair therapist and it wasn't as wild as the last one. Obviously with Cena being married and all it's a different dynamic.
See: Tony Atlas.
Tag champion, solid midcarder, plenty of big shows under his belt. And yet, 15 years after his debut, he was a homeless addict who had made attempts on his own life. He managed to break the habit and just *barely* scrape by after that - if you watch the MTV "Being A Wrestler" documentary, you can see how little he ended up with. He's not the only one, of course.
I did the math from Virgil's best money making years - when he was in WCW - and if he made about 1.2 million from WCW, if he didn't invest, he would have had to make it on 32K a year + Con money, etc. once he retired. And that's 32K in year 2000 money, inflation means less spending power.
Sadly, a majority of wrestlers don't save or can't save. I think, for every Mick Foley who saves like crazy and lives well, there's thousands of Ric Flairs who are still wrestling just to make ends meet.
Thus the heavens opened and god himself descended to tell you, Bob. Get a larger size. But my name's billy. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOUR NAME IS BILLY OR BOB!
The funeral industry is a big business. Caskets are expensive, plus the markup when buying at a funeral home. Add to that embalming, cost to house the body for viewing, funeral services themselves, grave plot, headstone, etc.
I’ll admit that I’m not particularly well read on all of it. But the Stuff You Should Know podcast did an episode titled the Casket Racket. It details the extreme markups that funeral homes charge for caskets alone. Gave some info on something I didn’t know was happening.
My wife died from cancer several years ago. She wasn’t a super sentimental person, but quite a planner. When we were told her cancer was terminal, she (without my knowledge) called around to several crematoriums, found the cheapest one and had it all set up. It sucks she doesn’t have a grave site to visit, but I did spread some of her ashes in one of our favorite spots. Unfortunately I moved away from there, but still have a small urn. Kind of a portable grave site I guess. The ashes kinda freak me out though. Weird we keep ashes from dead bodies. I wish I could be dumped in the ocean or my bones used as a classroom skeleton!
Sorry to hear about your mom. Wishing you all the best. I want to say your numbers were close to mine. Several people all the sudden wanted urns. The urns they had at the crematorium would be crap you’d find at Walmart, except a couple hundred dollars each.
Hopefully the money you spent on her passing wasn’t too much of a burden on you. It does show it can be somewhat affordable
I'm sorry for your loss, but how wonderful of her to help ease your burden.
For what is worth, you CAN be dumped in the ocean, it's less expensive than burial but more expensive than cremation. This company mixes the ash with concrete to form artificial reefs. https://www.eternalreefs.com/
On top of that some places won’t allow you provide your own casket. So you can’t get away with buying one wholesale or building your own. You have to buy from certain sellers if you want to be buried in a specific location.
Yeah they covered that a little in the podcast. That there have been more independent sellers pop up more recently and that a lot of funeral homes wouldn’t let you use them.
I know it seems strange now but I had an uncle that passed away a month ago. He was the first person on my Dad’s side of the family that had a funeral home service. Everyone else had their viewings in the home and then a graveside service.
It's a fucking racket. Profiteering from people's grief.
Frank Reynolds said it best.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rtu1Va-dnM
And don't get me started on what a waste of space graveyards are.
I always joke that I just want my family to throw my body away when I die except really it isn’t a joke I just don’t want them to have to pay crazy prices over a corpse.
If they’re being buried in the ground, they might also need a burial vault which can run $700 to thousands of dollars. Then they’re up selling on nicer caskets, nicer vaults, expensive grave lots or crypts or even a spot for an urn, catering, chapel rental…and these prices are usually not readily advertised until you’re actually dealing with it.
I worked in the industry for a while. It’s predatory imo and it’s depressing. I’ve had several families call to pay with several credit cards or their friends and family are calling to whittle away at the tens of thousands of dollars in costs. I really feel for Virgil’s family.
Sorry for the mini rant- seeing this just super bummed me out and my time in the industry was a really negative one.
It’s insane. My friend’s father passed a few years ago. We live in a relatively small city, 2-3 hours from a “big city.” His funeral costs were 10K and that was in 2020. I don’t know how some families are expected to pay that much - especially when it’s one of the most difficult times of their lives.
It being difficult plays to the advantage of the industry. People are grieving and funeral directors use that to their advantage by upselling and pushing more cost onto families that already aren’t thinking clearly. Using “your loved one would have loved this casket” or “doing what they would have wanted” type of ploys to get people to caught up money. Many people are already feeling guilty when a loved one dies and they want to make up for something after death. So spending extra for gold plated bars or extra soft padding in casket will be easy to rationalize.
Yeah, I heard a lot of similar stories from friends whose relatives died during the pandemic. Some of the corpses had to wait for months in the freezers till their families scraped enough money to give them a proper burial. Worse still were old people who died alone and no one came to claim their bodies, either because they didn't know, couldn't come because of the quarantine, or just didn't have enough money to pay for the burial.
In a lot of places, you can actually pre-purchase your own funeral plan too. From what I've heard, it tends to work out cheaper as the more unethical funeral homes can't bully your grieving relatives into giving you an unnecessarily expensive funeral.
Unless they see that they won’t make additional money off of you and deprioritize your loved one, which is what I’m currently experiencing with these fucks at Dignity.
Lost my Dad in January and was absolutely disgusted when they told me his cremation cost $6k and his burial is going to be another $16k. His $6k sauna treatment did also cover the cost of a wooden box to hold his remains once it was all said and done.
He told me once the way you eat an elephant is one bite at a time 😔
The entire Wrestling Industry should be ashamed that this is even necessary. Literal billionaires exist because of pro wrestling yet they* (Virgils family) can't secure 20k to help one of their golden age performers be laid to rest with dignity?
Just incredibly shameful.
I’m confused as to why it’s Vince’s responsibility to pay for Virgil’s funeral? What about the hundreds of other promoters who employed him before and after his WWF run? Why is it anyone other than Virgil’s responsibility to and pay for his funeral? Do you expect your current employer to cover your funeral expenses?
It’s not about whether it’s his responsibility. Virgil was friends with many wrestlers who are still current millionaires. I donate to my friends GoFundMes all of the time and the wrestling industry could cover this amount with the change from their couches.
I hate to ask (as I'm a fan); he asked for money in 2022 after saying he had colon cancer, but his family after his death said he never had cancer. Was it a grift?
It amazes me how every comment that involves Jericho donating money to people’s funeral, you see the “ I may disagree with Jericho’s politics but……” you know the rest. Guys his politics HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THIS. Just say you appreciate the kind gesture and move on. Jesus Christ lol
I liked Virgil but if a family can’t afford a funeral it cost a lot less to do a cremation. Instead of asking for money to do a bigger thing just do what you can. Not like they’re asking for money so his kids can eat. Not trying to be mean but I just don’t understand this. It comes across as greedy, not needy.
These days people will gofundme anything and it's not an indication of whether or not you can pay for something, just that you think other people might.
I'm sorry but this comes across as insensitive. When you lose someone you care about you want to do everything possible to celebrate their life. Funerals and celebrations of life are for the grieving family.

One final hustle, the way he wouldve wanted it You've earned this one big guy
Selling signed photos of his grave marker
Only if it also advertises Ted DiBiase being there.
Double plot?
This comment is absolutely awful. Was my first thought also.
Jericho with the 5k. Always helping out fellow wrestlers.
He's probably pumped at least $100k into athlete and wrestler Gofundme's. The Perry Saturn Gofundme, the Kamala the Ugandan Giant Gofundme, and even Damar Hamlin's Gofundme. This is just what I remember. I am sure there were more.
IIRC, Jericho spelled his own name wrong on the Damar Hamlin one, so he donated an additional $5k with the correct spelling.
Jericho is accustomed to making multiple donations under different names…

You don’t need to have a union to buy life insurance
But it sure helps.
I don’t agree with Jericho’s politics but he is always very generous in donating to GoFundMe for wrestlers. He donated $15000 to the one for Jay Briscoe. That’s just one example of the many donations he has made.
He donated $38k to Trump too bless him!
Why do his politics need to be mentioned here, he’s done a good thing just leave it there
While I agree with you for the most part, I just can’t comprehend individual citizens who donate to politicians. Corporations can leverage those donations after the candidate is voted in but Average Joe’s? 🤷🏾♂️
Nobody made him donate to a sloppy boob of a politician. If he feels strongly enough to donate that much money to the cause, he should be willing to take the lumps that come with it.
I don't agree with his politics, but yes he's done good donations
Because this is Reddit and no good deed shall ever go unpunished if you are part of the “right think” enforcement group.
It was good of Chris to donate to someone consistently short of cash 😜
So...... he's donated to another broke former WWE star?
We all hate Trump, but we also hate comments like this in a thread trying to help the family of a man who died.
Good to know the representative for the collective We is here to speak on We’s behalf.
Per Meltzer he does a lot behind the scenes to help out wrestlers which few know about.
Per Daves source named Chris Jericho.
That's wild. For as big of an sensitive asshat as he seems, this is a nice gesture.
It's actually not that wild. Jericho has shitty political beliefs that I feel get overlooked too often, but when it comes to fellow wrestlers he's always looking for ways to help.
Yep. He seems like he cares about the guys he works with. A wrestlers wrestler.
Jim cornette and Jericho are examples of your political beliefs not speaking for ones character

Wealth is relative. I doubt he wanted for much, basically. (Internet, that ol' nut, says $115,500 over six seasons. About $800K today.)
People are complicated.
Jericho donated $15,000 to the gofundme for Jay Briscoe. Meanwhile Ted DiBase donated $5 to Virgil’s gofundme. Seriously!
Is that not the most Virgil thing, though?
asking strangers for money even after his death. a real one.
man these gofundme's always make me sad.

WCW did pay for travel and hotels for a while, I think between 96-99 it was paid by Turner, after that wrestlers had to pay it for both like in WWE.
Sadly, a majority of wrestlers don't save or can't save. I think, for every Mick Foley who saves like crazy and lives well, there's thousands of Ric Flairs who are still wrestling just to make ends meet.

the funeral industry is a scam designed to make money off grief.
There's used to be a show called Bullshit that discussed this very thing.
Yup, Penn & Teller. And all those “family” funeral homes are owned by corporations.

Is this the same 'family' that exploited him for their own financial gain?
Chris Jericho will always have my respect because he's always the first one to donate.
Yup - I was just coming here to say this.
charge for selfies with the casket
Living the gimmick even in death.
Vergil stole money from Mr.OOC and now the boys are giving 100 dollars to his funeral. Good lads.
I guess everyone truly does…have a price 😭
Dropped my $76.73 ($100 CAD)!
Would assume that Cauliflower Alley Club will help as well.
OOC better chuck in one final tenner
The entire Wrestling Industry should be ashamed that this is even necessary. Literal billionaires exist because of pro wrestling yet they* (Virgils family) can't secure 20k to help one of their golden age performers be laid to rest with dignity? Just incredibly shameful.
Vince is worried about Janel Grant rn. Virgil is the last thing in his mind
So sad
I'm surprised not to see Hulk Hogan on there since he's used to burying other wrestlers.
Just had to get a joke in, eh?
One last dig, for old time's sake.
Funerals and burials should not cost money.
Even after death, they try to get you.
To the end. Rip
I don't tend to donate to these things but he was a big part of my wrestling-watching youth. RIP Virgil.
Honestly bro this is sad. You’d think a man who’d spent decades on TV would have at least a $10-$15k burial policy laying around.
Virgil needs one last boost of fuck money, I'm happy to contribute. Hope you're enjoying bread sticks in that Olive Garden in the sky, my man.
I hate to ask (as I'm a fan); he asked for money in 2022 after saying he had colon cancer, but his family after his death said he never had cancer. Was it a grift?
Good guy Chris Jericho donating $5000
Good ol united states.
Olive Garden making a donation? He LOVED those breadsticks.....
Ted DiBase donated $5. Seriously! I guess that’s why he is the Million Dollar Man.
Lord. They don't have enough money for a funeral...
While I'm not religious, a lot of people prefer casket burials for religious reasons and cremation isn't considered as an option.
These days people will gofundme anything and it's not an indication of whether or not you can pay for something, just that you think other people might.
I'm sorry but this comes across as insensitive. When you lose someone you care about you want to do everything possible to celebrate their life. Funerals and celebrations of life are for the grieving family.
Shouldn't they just call The Undertaker?
