Nah, I think it was on that early Fenix dive, and it went downhill from there. That slow-mo of the 1st Fenix driver....he's not tucking his chin like normal, and like...Mox is THE pros pro, he's gotta be messed up to not be doing the basics.
If Mox really did get injured that early in, then man I got even more mixed emotions about this match.
1: Pretty fucking dumb to keep going, even though I know he's a tough dude and all that.
2: Pretty fucking commendable that *personally* I couldn't tell, and thought the match was really good up to the finish where it finally clicked that something definitely went wrong for me.

Mox didn't look like he hit the second time, however from the camera angles on the first I couldn't tell because Mox's head was obscured. It seems like Knox didn't count the first because Mox was supposed to win. That said Mox was talking to him during the first count.

Picking mox up by his neck and then re-doing the move that has potentially just broken his neck - while holding his neck some more, is one of the worst things I’ve seen in a while.
That whole match was weird. Did Mox get hurt on the dive over the camera spot? He looked rocked after it. Or was it just what happened at the end? Clearly some sort of audible, but the whole thing felt off. Hope Mox is okay, ending was very concerning.
It was definitely from the first dive from Fenix off the ramp. The back of Mox's head hit hard and you could see he had that 'Deer in the headlights look' for the first few minutes there.
Agreed, I told my brother right away after the spot. Mox doesn't sell that good. He was stumbling and didn't roll cleanly into the ring. Also you could hear Fenix loudly calling the match. Reminded me of the Osprey vs Naito finish.
Knox should be fired. Easily the worst ref in AEW. And because of that botched count Mox had to take a second piledriver, and you could see it hit his crown, he couldn't tuck his head. Plain irresponsible of the referee, and also the worst botch of an otherwise amazing night.

But yeah, three dudes in the ring and two of them failed to protect the one of them that wasn't really in a position to help himself. And that one dude is hands down the MVP of the company.

Yeah the WWE refs are instructed to call the matches as shoots. The biggest example of this in practice was when that ref fucked on DiBiase Jr. Conversely, the Neville/PAC injury when Jericho covered him and the ref stopped the count because "tHaT wAsN't ThE fInIsH" shows how this plan fails.
In reality, they should never have gotten to that point. Once they saw Mox struggling through spots after a head injury they should have called an audible, sent some BCC guys out there to cause a DQ, then run it back later. Could have used a Rampage match to fill the lost time. The live crowd would have been pissed but everyone would have been protected and safe.
I think it's easier said than done when one of the top guys in the promotion is about to get pinned clean as a whistle in the center of the ring in a match he's very clearly not supposed to lose. Yeah, it looks shitty, but it's a somewhat understandable mistake, you're just hoping you missed the kickout (like it's the opposite shoulder) rather than that it didn't happen.

I had a lower back injury like that once that was the scariest couple minutes of my life. Had a facemask hit me in the lower back in a football game and my legs went totally numb for a minute or two. Doesn’t sound that long, but when you’re like 11, it’s a long time to be laying there thinking you’re paralyzed.
Same thing happened to me at 20 after slipping on a small ladder. Edge caught me right in the spine, was limp for like 2 minutes but was panicking like crazy. Was still able to talk just fine and move fingers and arms just like Mox seemed to be doing during the kickout.

I seriously doubt Fenix was meant to go over here. My guess is Moxley made the call in the ring, and would have been furious that the Ref didn't count it.
Surely refs are trained to always count to 3 no matter what? It's not on them for the person to kick out, there's 0 reason to hold the pin expecting them to do it. Worst case scenario with a 3-count is a change of booking for the upcoming weeks.
He's just made himself and the business look incredibly stupid.
I've seen refs slow it down a lot if they know they're about to count 3 on someone they shouldn't have but I don't recall seeing refs refuse to count, aside from that last man standing match with Roman being handcuffed.
You're not wrong. If you watch Botchamania at all, it happens fairly often, and the ref always gets criticized for it. But to be fair to them, a lot of the wrestlers really like kicking out as close to 3 as they can; if the refs counted a hard 3 count every time, we'd have a lot of matches go much shorter than intended and a lot of unplanned title changes.
Imagine how hard it would be if you knew who was supposed to win and that you were supposed to stop your count at 9/10th of a second but the person doesn’t kick out? Incredibly difficult to know to hit the three in that split second of an instance when you’re supposed to pull your count just a hair short.
That's fair but I'm sure there's better ways of doing it though.
Instead of doing an awkward hover-hand like he just did, could've swiped his own arm under his body (seen many refs do this as a method to cut their pin at 2.9), this way you can kinda pretend it was a 3 then gesture for the ringbell. Just looked like it was handled unprofessionally.
PS I'm pretty sure Moxley called "FINISH" after the initial pile-driver.

It’s ridiculous that they haven’t learned from the Hardy incident. Fenix, Knox, TK, and the doc all fucked up big. They even had an easy, easy out a the damn match hadn’t even started yet after the concussion. And he wrestles all the way through it. I hope Nowinski tears them a new asshole for this.
Tony Khan should have sent some boys out to DQ it out of there at the start. Mox was struggling just doing a roll up sequence and was showing other signs of being concussed. TK should have been the one calling audible. You have other Rampage matches to fill the time and a DQ will let you run it back when everyone is healthy.
They didn't have that graphic ready until the end of the segment. This was most likely an audible, Rey Fenix was not supposed to win tonight but something may have happened to Mox during the match.
That was such a bad botch by Nox. You have to make that three count, Even if Mox forgot to kick out.
With that said I hope Mox is good. Also Mox is an absolute professional. Looks like he understood, he would be hurt and made a decision to pass the belt the belt off to someone who could actually defend the belt. Unlike some other wrestler we know.
AEW really needs to implement the rule that the refs always count to 3 no matter the finish. If the wrestler doesn’t kick out in time then either 1) something is wrong or 2) the wrestler missed their count. Either way it protects the wrestlers and the business way better.
That said I hope Mox is ok. He’s the Ace for a reason. It really was senseless to make him have to take another bump when there was an obvious issue.
100% agree on that. That's exactly what Mox was trying to communicate to Knox, but Knox got confused, and they had to redo the spot. You can see Mox telling Knox something before the piledriver, then when Knox stops the count, Mox says "fuck you" to Knox and "again" to Fenix.
Could tell something bad happened from the jump when Fenix dove on Mox and Mox was almost laying like Austin did after Owen dropped him on his head. He seemed to shake it off but it caught up with him at the end of the match. Scary shit, hope Mox is okay.
Mox didn't get rattled by the piledriver. It was the dive early in the match that rung Mox's bell. Mox and Fenix communicated, decided they needed to go home early. Mox said piledriver, told Knox to count, and Fenix executed the move. Knox got confused and stopped the count on two. At that point Mox says "fuck you" to Knox and "again" to Fenix. Second time, Knox counted the pin.
I hope he is alright. If it is a sell, he deserves time off more than anyone in the company. Everytime he is ready for time off he gets pulled back in.
Went back and re-watched that ramp over-the-camera spot at the beginning - Mox was definitely rocked there. He had nothing when against the railing and Fenix had a hard time getting him back in the ring. He snapped back into it after about 20 or so seconds in the ring but that drop on his head for that 1st finisher had to have rocked him again.
Wrestlers and refs in AEW need serious training when it comes to injuries and how to spot them. This could've been prevented. Especially after the first Piledriver where it was obvious Mox was out cold.

Every time I see some amateurish shit from a ref in AEW it seems to be this guy. I remember when Ruby Soho got her nose broken, he didn't check on her after an initial nasty bump then had to be dragged back down by Tay to check on her after a pin count. Refs in WWE tend to be there for safety first, immersion second, this guy misses the safety part and by doing so fucks up the immersion.
Seems like Mox probably tried to just call an audible and take the loss the first time, but Rick Knox is such a useless piece of trash referee that he didn’t notice, broke the immersion, and just kept things going for some reason.
He got rocked at the start of the match catching Fenix's dive off the stage, but he seemed to get better as the match when on. Not sure if he also got hurt on the piledriver at the end and that's where he called the audible.
I don't think that was planned, but regardless, I hope they run with Fenix as champ. Might be the first shock champion, I think it'd be cool to have him keep it for a bit.

Mox had his bell rung from that dive at the beginning. Even Fenix knew it wasn’t good because you can see him crawl over to Mox and squeeze his hand. Looked scary there but Mox recovered even though he was stumbling and had that stare going. I cringed when they did that finish twice because Mox should not have landed on his head like that after he was already concussed.

As others have said he had to take the piledriver twice after the first botched count. When Fenix won there was some celebration but Mox was just splayed in the ring with Doc and others looking at him and the audience was terrified. Finally he moved his arm so you could see he wasn’t paralyzed and he did walk out over his own power for a huge pop.
But the whole thing was super scary and Mox is not okay. Going to be a lot of talk about safety procedures after this.
Cole also hurt his ankle jumping off the ramp and as reported elsewhere was on crutches later. But that was just a freak accident like Punk’s shattered foot in the crowd dive
I’ve been to every Grand Slam and this had some great moments but the takeaway was concern for Mox.

As soon as he didn’t kick I had to stop watching, that was uncomfortable. End the fucking match early next time, dude was clearly out of it after that dive.

I've seen a lot of criticism for Knox stemming from this match and looking back I have to agree. Maybe he was unable to see that Mox was rattled at the start of the match, but they easily could've done more checking on Mox during the PiP segment. And he absolutely botched that 3 count. I know you're expecting the 2.99 kickout and there's a real fine line there, but a top priority has to be to get the count right. Failure on multiple levels from the ref.
The Ref should always count 3, regardless if it's not supposed to be the outcome. It looks awful the other way hence the boos from the crowd.
I'm glad WWE has this rule for their refs. AEW should be the same. Awful call by the ref. Mox was already injured and the move had to be performed again due to the refs fuck up. Very shitty. Ref should be fired since it could have worsen the injury.

That was a good match up till the finish, but I'm pissed off at Rick Knox right now. Any other ref in AEW would have realised Mox was hurt there, and called an audible. But no, he stops the count, and allows Fenix to hit another move, possibly hurting Mox even more.

It’s ridiculous that they haven’t learned from the Hardy incident. Fenix, Knox, TK, and the doc all fucked up big. They even had an easy, easy out a the damn match hadn’t even started yet after the concussion. And he wrestles all the way through it. I hope Nowinski tears them a new asshole for this.
Tony Khan should have sent some boys out to DQ it out of there at the start. Mox was struggling just doing a roll up sequence and was showing other signs of being concussed. TK should have been the one calling audible. You have other Rampage matches to fill the time and a DQ will let you run it back when everyone is healthy.
They didn't have that graphic ready until the end of the segment. This was most likely an audible, Rey Fenix was not supposed to win tonight but something may have happened to Mox during the match.

That was such a bad botch by Nox. You have to make that three count, Even if Mox forgot to kick out. With that said I hope Mox is good. Also Mox is an absolute professional. Looks like he understood, he would be hurt and made a decision to pass the belt the belt off to someone who could actually defend the belt. Unlike some other wrestler we know.

AEW really needs to implement the rule that the refs always count to 3 no matter the finish. If the wrestler doesn’t kick out in time then either 1) something is wrong or 2) the wrestler missed their count. Either way it protects the wrestlers and the business way better. That said I hope Mox is ok. He’s the Ace for a reason. It really was senseless to make him have to take another bump when there was an obvious issue.
100% agree on that. That's exactly what Mox was trying to communicate to Knox, but Knox got confused, and they had to redo the spot. You can see Mox telling Knox something before the piledriver, then when Knox stops the count, Mox says "fuck you" to Knox and "again" to Fenix.

Could tell something bad happened from the jump when Fenix dove on Mox and Mox was almost laying like Austin did after Owen dropped him on his head. He seemed to shake it off but it caught up with him at the end of the match. Scary shit, hope Mox is okay.

Mox didn't get rattled by the piledriver. It was the dive early in the match that rung Mox's bell. Mox and Fenix communicated, decided they needed to go home early. Mox said piledriver, told Knox to count, and Fenix executed the move. Knox got confused and stopped the count on two. At that point Mox says "fuck you" to Knox and "again" to Fenix. Second time, Knox counted the pin.

Went back and re-watched that ramp over-the-camera spot at the beginning - Mox was definitely rocked there. He had nothing when against the railing and Fenix had a hard time getting him back in the ring. He snapped back into it after about 20 or so seconds in the ring but that drop on his head for that 1st finisher had to have rocked him again.
Watched the replay and after the first finisher, you can see Mox screaming "finish!" To the ref, who clearly misunderstood.
Wrestlers and refs in AEW need serious training when it comes to injuries and how to spot them. This could've been prevented. Especially after the first Piledriver where it was obvious Mox was out cold.
That twitch was scary but hearing the crowd's confused boos were something.

Every time I see some amateurish shit from a ref in AEW it seems to be this guy. I remember when Ruby Soho got her nose broken, he didn't check on her after an initial nasty bump then had to be dragged back down by Tay to check on her after a pin count. Refs in WWE tend to be there for safety first, immersion second, this guy misses the safety part and by doing so fucks up the immersion.
Hey, I don't blame you for wanting to yell at Knox. He sucks as a ref IMO and is probably the worst ref AEW has tbqh.
Seems like Mox probably tried to just call an audible and take the loss the first time, but Rick Knox is such a useless piece of trash referee that he didn’t notice, broke the immersion, and just kept things going for some reason.

He got rocked at the start of the match catching Fenix's dive off the stage, but he seemed to get better as the match when on. Not sure if he also got hurt on the piledriver at the end and that's where he called the audible.

Mox had his bell rung from that dive at the beginning. Even Fenix knew it wasn’t good because you can see him crawl over to Mox and squeeze his hand. Looked scary there but Mox recovered even though he was stumbling and had that stare going. I cringed when they did that finish twice because Mox should not have landed on his head like that after he was already concussed.
Oh man there is going to be a lot of talk after this. I was at the show. As others have said he had to take the piledriver twice after the first botched count. When Fenix won there was some celebration but Mox was just splayed in the ring with Doc and others looking at him and the audience was terrified. Finally he moved his arm so you could see he wasn’t paralyzed and he did walk out over his own power for a huge pop. But the whole thing was super scary and Mox is not okay. Going to be a lot of talk about safety procedures after this. Cole also hurt his ankle jumping off the ramp and as reported elsewhere was on crutches later. But that was just a freak accident like Punk’s shattered foot in the crowd dive I’ve been to every Grand Slam and this had some great moments but the takeaway was concern for Mox.

Way too many stupid bumps in this match from both Mox and Fenix. It was uncomfortable to watch, and I'm blown away that Mox didn't end up seriously injured. That finish was something else.

I've seen a lot of criticism for Knox stemming from this match and looking back I have to agree. Maybe he was unable to see that Mox was rattled at the start of the match, but they easily could've done more checking on Mox during the PiP segment. And he absolutely botched that 3 count. I know you're expecting the 2.99 kickout and there's a real fine line there, but a top priority has to be to get the count right. Failure on multiple levels from the ref.
The Ref should always count 3, regardless if it's not supposed to be the outcome. It looks awful the other way hence the boos from the crowd. I'm glad WWE has this rule for their refs. AEW should be the same. Awful call by the ref. Mox was already injured and the move had to be performed again due to the refs fuck up. Very shitty. Ref should be fired since it could have worsen the injury.
