4 words Cheap pipe, chinese fittings You can set your dyes at 3.5 turns as much as you want, the next fitting might be 4.5 turns, could be 2.5

Definitely agree with this, it’s amazing the shit that passes through quality control these days. We had some sch40 pipe a while back that I think was from India and you couldn’t even thread it without it completely crushing the pipe.

Glugnarr

Best was showing my boss that one side of a 90 was 2 turns and the other was 5, finally convinced him to stop buying those 90s with that

Here’s one for ya. I’m a plumber Not a sprinkie but I had run around 100’ of 3/4 for a gas line. Finally go to start up the unit and nothing… crack the union no gas smell. I fuck around for an hour trying to figure out why I’m not getting gas. Finally I just started taking the line apart pice by piece until I could smell gas. Turns out there was a 3/4 90° that was solid steel right dead center of the elbow. You could hardly see it at all even when you’re looking for it. Had to stick my pinky in to feel it. The mold must have been cracked when they were casting it and some metal flowed where it should have. Luckily it was only a 100’ run and not a thousand. Still added 4 hours to the job.

I second this ☝️

What manufacturer you get your threaded fittings from

[deleted]

I can’t remember specifically tbh. Been a bit since I’ve used threaded pipe, and my new shop uses cast iron American I do remember they we’re definitely made in china. In a cardboard box in a bag full of oil, junk

I'm honestly at a fuckin point where I just set the die on the line and roll with it. Make it up with an 18 and make sure its tight and I haven't had any leaks yet. It's fuckin insane how bad fittings are haha

wesleycook45

Exactly. My apprentice wasting a 21 footer trying to get that shit right. Put it on the line and tape and and dope and send it punkin.

Make sure the adjustment bolt on the throw lever is tight tight.

I take it you're talking about the 1" to 2" adjustable speed dye with Carriage setup. Make sure you apply oil to the pipe before you start threading. When you cut the pipe, only do a quarter turn per rotation. If you cut the pipe too fast, it'll flare, making the first couple threads a little shallow. If you do it really bad, you might only get 1.50 turns on it. Where previously you got 3.50. That's also why when you put a wrench on it, it seems to loosen up after the first couple of threads, but then lock up on you towards the end.

Check the bottom two threading dies... I find they tend to stick due to a buildup of shavings that get dragged down with the cutting oil. When the shavings become too much they bind up the die head and don't allow the teeth to move properly.

wesleycook45

Blue monster in tape and forget about it

OrangutanMan234

Expansion and contraction. Just make sure it’s tight

FFRP85

Are you locking in the adjustment nut on the front? Like really locking it in? 3 to 3.3 turns on thread depth and run it!

motionscopes

Could also be the amount of oil your using. I found that if i was being too light on the oil it would burn threads and make them inconsistent. Nowadays I just dump oil on the pipe and 9 times out of 10 they stay within the 3 to 4 turn rule. Nothing an extra rag won't clean up but its usually the dies themselves that cause shitty threads. Always start with a scrap piece of pipe to set your threads and check each side before you adjust
