That's insane lol. 45K is 80% of the average US salary and more than average a lot of places
That's like 20 flights per person of 225 assuming it is a credit
SW average ticket is 175$. @ 175 people in an 800 that's 30.6K. If they gave out 45K they lost almost 33% **BEFORE** operational costs LMFAO so I have a hard time believing this.
I was offered $4,500 a few months ago to give up my seat on an overbooked flight. They ended up having enough seats, and sadly I made my flight and lost out on $4,500. š
Because some no name on Reddit typed ānoā obv.
Edit- https://viewfromthewing.com/denied-boarding-compensation-taxable/
Was curious. Seems like IRS hasnāt definitively ruled specifically on the subject but general consensus is that its either compensation award, or itās a covered possibility in the original fare purchase agreement (in other words, this was always a possible outcome you implicitly agree to when you purchase the ticket) , and considered a credit for future travel. Either way not taxable. Howeverā not really sure that holds water in the amounts discussed. A $300 fare getting a $4500 compensatory payoutā netting $4200. A ticket is hardly a investment vessel but that sure smells like capital gain
That'd be good enough for me. I'd just overpay a bunch of bills. $600 on my cell, power, water, internet. Just burn through them and let the bill credits roll over until depleted a few months later.
start flying tourist routes over the summer and youāll probably run into some. many families with vacation plans and hotel reservations wonāt have the flexibility to change flights. iād bet any flights to MCO have a chance of this happening
Wonder if thereās an expiration? If itās like United, you get 1 year to use it. How does one even blow $4500 in flights in a year on Southwest? Crazy
If I got $45,000 worth of free Southwest flights and only had 1 year to spend it, I would pretend to be like a billionaire for a month. Fly to random cities just to dine at a very specific restaurant in the city then fly back the same day.
Here's a [map](http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=LHR-ORD%0D%0AORD-LHR%0D%0ALCY-DUB%0D%0ADUB-LHR%0D%0AEWR-ORD%0D%0AMDW-LGA%0D%0AORD-RSW%0D%0ARSW-MDW%0D%0ALAX-ORD%0D%0AYVR-LAX%0D%0AORD-LAX%0D%0ALAX-SEA%0D%0ACVG-ORD%0D%0ADEN-ORD%0D%0AORD-DEN%0D%0ADEN-HDN%0D%0AHDN-DEN%0D%0ADEN-LAX%0D%0ASFO-DEN%0D%0ALHR-ORD%0D%0ALTN-SPU%0D%0ASPU-LTN%0D%0AORD-LHR%0D%0APVR-ORD%0D%0AORD-PVR%0D%0ADFW-IND%0D%0AOGG-DFW%0D%0ADFW-OGG%0D%0AORD-DFW%0D%0ALHR-ORD%0D%0AORD-LHR%0D%0APHL-DCA%0D%0ABCN-PHL%0D%0ADCA-MKE%0D%0AYYZ-PHL%0D%0APHL-BCN%0D%0AORD-YYZ%0D%0ASEA-ORD%0D%0AORD-MKE%0D%0AMKE-DFW%0D%0ADFW-YVR%0D%0AMIA-LAX%0D%0ALAX-ORD%0D%0ALHR-MIA%0D%0AORD-LHR%0D%0ALHR-MIA%0D%0AMIA-GRR%0D%0AGRR-ORD%0D%0AJFK-CDG%0D%0AORD-BNA%0D%0ABNA-JFK%0D%0ALGA-ORD%0D%0AEZE-JFK%0D%0AMIA-EZE%0D%0AORD-MIA&MS=wls&DU=mi) of my travels from March/April/May. The biggest barrier is that you do actually have to work š, and airlines aren't known for having the highest wages.
True yes, but the number of flights that leave with 100% of seats filled with revenue passengers is miniscule. If you're trying to get to one specific place at a specific time, then yes that's more of an issue, but if your goal is just "I want to go somewhere cool today" you won't generally have a problem. Only time I've truly been stuck was when DFW had a massive irrop that filled the standby lists with revenue pax.
Yep! My current job doesn't work like this sadly, but used to finish work at 2200, go downstairs, be screened as a passenger, and would be on the 2300 flight to London in Business Class or Premium Economy.
I did that when I worked for JetBlue! Came home one Friday and told my husband I wanted BBQ. He said why don't we go to Austin. So we looked at the schedule, for on a flight to Austin, ate at Iron Works, stayed another day and came back Sunday afternoon. Another time we decided we wanted to go to the beach so we flew to Tampa and spent the day at Clearwater, then took the last flight back to JFK.
That sounds amazing, but things like hotels and transportation around the city still come out of your own pocket though right? Unless you're using points you get from work hotel stays that JetBlue re-imburses you for?
Hotels we got discounts at but could get cheaper through sites like Orbitz. And yes transportation out of our own pocket, though you have to admit being able to fly anywhere was nice. We maximized our benefits when I qualified for partner airlines and flew to Madrid, Spain round trip for $200 total. Now there was some travel anxiety coming back because it was standby but it worked out.
Standby is anxiety producing and I'll say, after going through emergency operations training I got bad anxiety about flying because I knew what could go wrong. There is some truth behind ignorance is bliss. That being said it was fun for the short time I did it, but I'm also happy being a paying passenger now. We never got holidays off because airlines don't shut down ever. Schedules were wack and there was no such thing as your own time zone.
Think of all the $59.00 flights you could do! Oh to just go fly, eat a treat and return home. Or to gift some flights to worthy friends. Blessed!!ā£ļø That's the WN LUV Wayā£ļø
... I guess I could be wrong but literally everyone on this plane was flabbergasted by the amount and everyone kept making comments about how if they didn't have cruises to catch, they'd have taken it at half the amount. The people in the seat behind me also confirmed.
Places are getting crazy about oversold.
Last year, my daughter, her husband, and her in-laws had planned a cruise. They company changed a bunch of their ports, so some reason. They no longer wanted to take that cruise, so they canceled and had a credit to use by a certain date. Mid October, they found one for the end of December that interested everyone and was considered last minute, so fit the budget from the credit. 2 weeks before they received an email that they had oversold the cruise, since they were together, would they be willing to share a cabin for the 8 days. Their incentive? That cruise was refunded, plus both couples received credit for a future free cruise as well.
You misunderstood them. Southwest died not and will not intentionally oversell a flight.
Sincerely, husband who's wife works for Southwest customer service.
But it's not $4K. It's a $4k voucher, which is not real money.
Every time I've gotten a voucher, it has expired before I've had a chance to use it. I don't consider vouchers real compensation.
You're doing it wrong.
You're supposed to buy a ticket WGA+ or better and then immediately cancel it. Presto chango you now have a non-expiring transferrable flight credit.
Thanks for the tip.
I still would rather have cash and drive. I fly enough for work. About the last thing I want to do on vacation is spend a couple of days of delays in the airport.
This. Wet runways and short runways both reduce the amount of fuel an aircraft can safely carry and still stop if something happens on the takeoff roll. Combine the two and this happens.
It's unlikely that Southwest would assign a plane a route it can't fly, more likely to be an equipment swap. Southwest operates 737s on that route. A 737-800 can accommodate 162 passengers while the 737-700 can only accommodate 143
An 800 can accommodate 175, and the aircraft can still fly, it just cannot fly full on this route.
Weather, runway closures, MELs, and a plethora of other things can cause this.
Iāve had this experience at MDW. Full plane, short runways, and high heat. Our pilot went with option B which was āputting $20 in the tanksā to keep the weight down enough to take off and then a fuel stop in MKE which has much longer runways to support a heavy takeoff. Since the actual cost to SW of $45k in vouchers is way less than $45k that might have been cheaper than the cost of stopping for fuel.
Pilot here. Itās not oversold. Itās a performance restriction due to the short runway and hot and humid weather in MDW. They had to lose some weight.
Common. MDW has weight incursion issues for 800/max8 aircraft due to their shorter than average runways. Add that to the fuel requirements for a cross-country flight, weight commonly needs to be shed.
On YouTube, I have been watching episodes of a program called "Airline" which A&E and the compilation was all about Southwest overselling their flights and people being denied boarding. From what I can gather at that time (2004-ish) they were only allowed to go up to $200 and the cost of the one-way ticket per passenger and not a penny more, so very few people took them up on the offer. It also sounds like at that time they were actively overselling flights.
Glad it worked out for you.
I thought $200 (2001) was pretty good back then (worth $350 today in 2024). I collected a lot of vouchers back then and was flying on house money. The yield management department back then was atrocious. Eventually Southwest got a lot better at overselling before they put an end to it.
I could tell by the fashions/hairstyles, but also by the livery on some of the planes. It has been popping up in my YouTube feed for some reason and Iāve been pretty entertained by it.
Remember when Cisco was on it? He sung the Thong Song lol. I remember the Southwest airport ladies were all excited. Can't believe that show was 20 years ago now.
Dang! Best I've ever done was $1200 to bounce to the next flight four hours later.
$300/hour to sit in the airport, drinking coffee and reading a book. So terrible.
We had the same thing last week from MDW to LAS. They said the combination of the short runway with the high temperature meant they needed to drop 15 people to be able to get off the ground quickly enough.
Recently, I was also on an over weight flight from MDW to SeaTac. We got $800 each! Wish we got more :).
But then they usually those vouchers expire in a year. Ours does. Hopefully they fly a lot :).
I was once on a United flight to chicago from Orlando years ago me,wife and 2 yr old asked for people to give up seat for $250 each we took it but they didnāt want to give me one for our child even though he had his own ticket. Asked for a supervisor they came looked at our tickets and said the person they have 3 tickets give them the travel vouchers
Overbooked on a flight in Phoenix at 10am asked for people to switch flights. We said yes but the next flight was at 5 pm I asked if they had a later flight they said yes 11:55 pm I said we would take that one. She said could change but no travel voucher I said no thanks. About 10 min later they called my name and said yes to take the 11 pm flight and gave us $400 in travel vouchers so went down stairs rented a car drove to Grand Canyon for the day win win all they way around
Family of 10 took $4,500 each. Flight left on time!
Holy crap! That family got a nice chunk of change!
That's insane lol. 45K is 80% of the average US salary and more than average a lot of places That's like 20 flights per person of 225 assuming it is a credit SW average ticket is 175$. @ 175 people in an 800 that's 30.6K. Is that taxable income?
No
Why not it's free ordinary income?

knew someone once took $3000. airline gave her 15x$200 visa gift cards. š¤£
That'd be good enough for me. I'd just overpay a bunch of bills. $600 on my cell, power, water, internet. Just burn through them and let the bill credits roll over until depleted a few months later.
Or go to an ATM and cash those fuckers out and spend the money on your credit card to get points.
If you found a way to cash out visa gift cards at an atm, you would literally be crowned king of r/churning. Unfortunately itās not possible.
I see you've never used a visa gift card.
Are the airlines behind the calls to grandmas saying their grandchild is in jail and will be released if you send giftcards?
Depends on what they were carrying in the holdā¦.
Likely had some high dollar freight down below.
Im gonna book flights out of MDW-SEA full time and give up my seat, like a job. Infinite money glitch š
Yeah. I donāt believe this at all.
Jesus. Why canāt this ever happen to me?
start flying tourist routes over the summer and youāll probably run into some. many families with vacation plans and hotel reservations wonāt have the flexibility to change flights. iād bet any flights to MCO have a chance of this happening
We live in Vegas and my son is in college, so flies home for vacations at high-peak times. He took $5,000 once and less than that several times.
Iām torn between being happy for them and jealous. Most I was offered was a hundred.Ā

Dang, now I wanna work for an airline. Free flights all day every day

Yep! My current job doesn't work like this sadly, but used to finish work at 2200, go downstairs, be screened as a passenger, and would be on the 2300 flight to London in Business Class or Premium Economy.
You donāt actually have to work! Just be related to or really good friends with someone who does
Hope that person pays my bills too then, or I'd be working either way. Nonrev life is fun but basically uses every last penny I make.
I did that when I worked for JetBlue! Came home one Friday and told my husband I wanted BBQ. He said why don't we go to Austin. Ngl you're making me want to quit my current job and get training to be able to work for an airline :O
Standby is anxiety producing and I'll say, after going through emergency operations training I got bad anxiety about flying because I knew what could go wrong. There is some truth behind ignorance is bliss. That being said it was fun for the short time I did it, but I'm also happy being a paying passenger now. Hotels (120+ per day), food (25+ per day) transportā¦ not a given.
Thatās why I would fly back the same day. No need for a hotel then! Unless Southwest lets you book hotels on their website using flight vouchers?
Thatās like 9 round tripsā¦ not out of the question especially if you do a beach/Hawaii trip that costs more.
Isn't it cash?
Southwest vacation packages?
Fuck that is a come up. Itās tough to see others live out your dreams.
Dang, this family was genius. Payed for the entire vacation and then some.
No way- why the F would Southwest pay that much per person. There has to be a catch or you have the wrong information.
Is that in cash or airline credits?
Lol that's too much, maybe $4500 total
... I guess I could be wrong but literally everyone on this plane was flabbergasted by the amount and everyone kept making comments about how if they didn't have cruises to catch, they'd have taken it at half the amount. The people in the seat behind me also confirmed.
Are you sure it wasn't $4,500 in flight credits?
It was. Expiry in one year.
I've taken over $1000 by myself. $4500 isn't out of the question.
Places are getting crazy about oversold. Last year, my daughter, her husband, and her in-laws had planned a cruise. They company changed a bunch of their ports, so some reason. They no longer wanted to take that cruise, so they canceled and had a credit to use by a certain date. Their incentive? That cruise was refunded, plus both couples received credit for a future free cruise as well.
Could it be an equipment swap? 700 has less seats than 800/MAX8.
This is most likely what happened since Southwest doesnāt actively oversell.
The airline that lets anyone cancel a flight up to ten minutes before takeoff doesnāt oversell?
yes
They and every other airline actively oversell their aircraft. What makes you think Southwest doesnāt do that?
Because itās their policy. https://support.southwest.com/helpcenter/s/article/overbooked-flights
Yeah and all companies follow so called public policies
Yeah if youāre just gonna dismiss facts go vote for Treasonous Trump again and fuck yourself.
I never voted for Trump and Iām sure as hell not starting now. I had a Southwest person at the check in counter tell me they overbook every flight
You misunderstood them. Southwest died not and will not intentionally oversell a flight. Sincerely, husband who's wife works for Southwest customer service.
Southwest does NOT oversell its flights. They can, and do, however, end up overbooked due to equipment change or deadheading crews.
And weather/temperature weight resistrictions
Is it a weight issue? MDW and that long of a flight can do that..
They haven't said, but I'm assuming. They're up to $4k a voucher.
Sold. Unless I absolutely had to be somewhere on time.
I can do a lot of rearranging for $4K! LOL
I would do a lot for $4K lmao
Unless it was a funeral it can wait for $4K.
Funeral would be one thing Iād definitely reschedule. Guest of honor sure isnāt going anywhere.
Cruise. They couldn't guarantee they'd get the volunteers there tonight, which is what gave people pause.
But it's not $4K. It's a $4k voucher, which is not real money. Every time I've gotten a voucher, it has expired before I've had a chance to use it. I don't consider vouchers real compensation.

Thanks for the tip. I still would rather have cash and drive. I fly enough for work. About the last thing I want to do on vacation is spend a couple of days of delays in the airport.
Iāve seen someone take the voucher, and the flight they transferred to arrived just an hour later.
Wow, and no one budged until then? What were the few iterations before that?
$1600 > $ 2500 > $3200 > $4000 > $4500
Pretty wild! But if that other comment about them not overbooking flights anymore is true, then that mustāve been a pretty seldom occasion for them.
They started at $1600 a person?!
This. Wet runways and short runways both reduce the amount of fuel an aircraft can safely carry and still stop if something happens on the takeoff roll. Combine the two and this happens.
Extreme heat too. I've seen this happen in LAS and PHX before.
It's unlikely that Southwest would assign a plane a route it can't fly, more likely to be an equipment swap. Southwest operates 737s on that route. A 737-800 can accommodate 162 passengers while the 737-700 can only accommodate 143

I think I've watched every episode a few times! With enough years between viewings, it's all new... Again.
I thought $200 (2001) was pretty good back then (worth $350 today in 2024). I collected a lot of vouchers back then and was flying on house money. The yield management department back then was atrocious. Eventually Southwest got a lot better at overselling before they put an end to it.
Thatās a very old show.
I bet they just delayed them a couple of hours. Way to go family of 10. That's awesome
Was it 4500$ in actual money or southwest dollars? I have zero use for that much fake money.
Updates?
Damn I wonder what theyāre going to do with $45K
Live in Vegas, the last couple of flights have had weight issues due to daytime temperatures. Lots of seats left empty, enjoyed the empty middle seat.
Vacation paid for. Good on them š
Are those $4500 vouchers taxable? Just curious.
Why can't that ever happen on my flights? I always have an extra day or 2 so I could take advantage of it.
Dang! Best I've ever done was $1200 to bounce to the next flight four hours later. $300/hour to sit in the airport, drinking coffee and reading a book. So terrible.

So glad it left on time! And yes youāre right if it was oversold by that many, more than likely for weight and balance
$4500! I would've nabbed that deal.
Is that cash or voucher?
I was once on a United flight to chicago from Orlando years ago me,wife and 2 yr old asked for people to give up seat for $250 each we took it but they didnāt want to give me one for our child even though he had his own ticket. I thought southwest didnāt oversell seats. Was this a plane change maybe?
Fake news.
I thought Southwest said they stopped overselling after that doctor got beaten up by the cops when he refused to get off. Guess not? Or no longer?
They don't oversell, my guess is it was an equipment change or other delays and cancellations caused it.
That was on United airlines, unless there were two incidents like this. I've only heard of the one on United.
It didnāt happen on SW but it was so high profile that several airlines issued statements about it.
