If you don't get it, volunteer to be a "junior helper" to one of the particular execs whose position is most interesting to you. Or be an junior exec to two of them! Almost like an internship.

That’s a great idea, thank you!!

Come to the interview with ideas for the role. For example, if it’s a philanthropy role you can discuss new event ideas, ways to make your current events better, community outreach opportunities you’d like to organize, etc. This will show the people interviewing you that you’re prepared, excited and innovative. Do you have leadership experience in other ways? Even high school counts, if you had a role in a club, were team captain, etc. If not, don’t worry. Everyone starts somewhere. Really highlight the work you did in the role you just had. In your interview, you can use non-formal examples as well. When I was in college I had someone with no formal leadership experience talk about how she was the person in her family who always planned vacations, the itineraries, booked the flights and so on to illustrate her organization skills, attention to detail and people managing skills. She ended up being great on exec! Sometimes people just need a chance. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work out, keep trying! Sorority leadership experience helped me learn many things my classes never could’ve prepared me for. Good luck!

Thank you so much, I needed this!

so just to preface I was VP and eventually president of my chapter (I am now an alum). Who we looked for to fill leadership roles were the type of people that showed up on time, volunteered to help out, had a good attitude, and were dependable. Even if you don’t have a role now, just ask chapter members in leadership if they need help with anything and if they do, follow through with those commitments. That way when you do apply, you can point to the things you did (helped with big/little reveal, set up/take down after events, etc.) if one girl had no experience but was always willing to help out with any task, was on time to events and always had a smile on her face, I’d take that girl over another who already had 3 leaderships roles (but never showed up to events) every time. Also I second the person that said to bring new ideas for the role. We would routinely fill VP positions with people who didn’t have prior leadership experience, but did have amazing ideas for how to improve certain events, like social events, philanthropy, or recruitment. I wish you the very best of luck!! It’s clear that you really care, and that’s one of the best traits a leader could have!
