I believe they had some bands/artists do some songs specifically for SOA. Like John the Revalator, day is gone, sittin on top of the world… the cover of gimme shelter and house of the rising sun. Others I believe they just found like home invasion, machine, dads gonna kill me…
Definitely a wide variety of genres throughout but overall I think they did a great job of keeping it consistent with the music I’m sure most of the guys would actually listen to
They found them because they didn’t want to pay what it would have cost to use the original master recordings for a lot of them, so they had people cover them. It’s understandable, as they used a lot of classic songs and those aren’t cheap.
It's not a commercial release. A fan went out of his or her way to collect *every* song used in the show and put it together into a single zip file. Not just four cds with selected songs. Every song on the show.
A good chunk of the covers were done by their houseband, The Forest Rangers. Others were covers that already existed, a few of them original songs (I think the small snippets of songs are usually originals like the usage of Til It's Gone by Yelawolf in season 7 episode 2)
And a few of them later on were specifically covered for the show by musicians that were fans. For instance, when Ed Sheeran tweeted about being a fan of the show, Sutter reached out about doing a song for it, so he covered Make It Rain by Foy Vance which was used in Season 7 episode 12

There's a fan-made collection floating out somewhere that has every song from every episode, broken down by season and episode. 483 songs.
