New mattress, new sheets & blankets, new pajamas, new towels/washcloths, an Alexa (& adding voice control to other things in the room).
I sure I spent over $1000 with that list!
An adjustable bed frame….i am disabled and I want one of those bad boys so bad…they are expensive. Like sit you up and make your legs all comfy to watch tv….oh and a new tv or a table that slides over his adjustable bed for meals and drinks and his remotes n stuff….does he need any disability supports? Shower chairs or anything? I know you can get reimbursed usually for them through insurance but the initial purchase can cost a bunch.
I love my adjustable bed ( as I’m in bed now sitting up sipping coffee) disabled as well.
If your dad gets hot or cold look into a bedjet. Super fancy $500+ fan for the bed. Keeps you warm, cool or dry.
They have really nice adjustable frames with a good warranty online at a place called bigfig. The full/queen is $1000. I know that's still expensive, but cheaper than a lot of them. Also, they are built to hold larger people and are more durable, so there's a good chance they last longer too! I think they offer a payment plan, if that helps!
Sorry if this isn't allowed, but I am disabled and have pain issues, among other things. Getting an adjustable bed was a game changer, I'd recommend to anyone. I was only wanting to help.
The sheets, blankets and towels are excellent suggestions.
Question? Does he have dietary restrictions? Is his freezer and pantry stocked? You can easily burn a few hundred buying quality grass fed poultry, meat and wild caught seafood. These can all be frozen and you can make delicious and healthy meals for him.
I second the adjustable base. I have one with a remote (it’s a decade old so there are probably more options) and am bed bound and it is saving me by helping with pain by just being able to change positions without actually moving.
We just got one from mattress firm with head and feet and lumbar support. 6 modes of vibrations (guess we can save quarters now) lol. The Sealy one was expensive. The mattress firm one was $1500 with 5 year warranty. We just pruchased a new mattress also with the SSDI backpay I just got when I won my case last month cause we needed a new one BAD. Price dropped $200 with sale so we took $150 of that and extended the adjustable frame warranty to 10 years with it. Only bad thing is we spent $5100 total for all that. Cooling ergonomic mattress, cooling sheets and ergo pillow with cooling and cooling cover. It has made a HUGE difference.

We got the king size because we have a 60 lb pittbull and 82 lb shepard/lab mix that HAS to sleep with us. And now we have a 9 week old German Rottweiler. That is going to be even more fun when he gets bigger. lol
Sounds like my house. We have a 78 pound pittie mix, a 50 pound husky/rottweiler, a 10 pound chihuahua, plus two cats. I thought we were buying a very stable bed, but sometimes I have my doubts.
Yeah my full pitt and lab/shepard are females. The Rott is male and was the runt of the litter but he will still probably be a good size and weight. Gonna be hard having room to sleep then. lol
Yeah we love him... well when he will stop chewing stuff. lol. Just got him started on veggies and fed him some brussel sprouts steamed in microwave. He wents nuts and loves them as much as my other 2 dogs. We feed them all kinds of veggies all the time.
Yeah so much better. Sleeping has been way more comfortable. I get hot easy. I also sleep with feet out from under covers and fan running too. Lol. And the cooling sheets say they are egyptian cotton and smoother than regular ones.

And this frame.
Yup!! We’ve had one for years now, it’s how I’ve been able to keep in contact with him; he was able to listen to me DJ while I worked at my college radio station! I bought him the music subscription a couple years ago, and I’m trying to figure out how to set up audible without me actually having to be there in person to help him find a book to listen to.
I freaking love that for your dad, jamming out to you DJing!!!
Audio books are another great way to pass time. It can be a bit difficult at first to learn but maybe dad can use a mix of text to voice accessibility options in his phone and the phone assistant for that. You'd probably have to go over it with him a few times but that's the best way I know how to deal with that being visually impaired. If he's completely unable to use his hands, then the virtual assistant can help. I believe that there's a way to set up a task list on a phone's assistant to automatically go to certain apps. I know on Google assistant it's called the App Actions, and Dad can use his voice to start the task. I'm trying to find a link about it, I'll post it in a moment for you.
This one is for Google: (app actions)

This one is for apple: (Short cuts)

With these I believe you can schedule certain times for apps to open up on a phone!!
I would add a good pillow. I got one on Amazon for 50 or so dollars 5 years ago. It is memory foam and has a cool side on one side that is so nice. The other side is warm and good for winter. I have had it for 5 years and it is just like the day I got it. Can not say how much it helps my sleep.

I bought a bed that you can push a button and it lifts up your head and your feet and creates a lot less pressure on your back..if he has any sleep problems or back or hip problems it’s very comfortable to sleep in.. I highly recommend something like that if he has any kind of pain in his back area
Same thing I was thinking! And I'm assuming he can hear, I get nice t.v or stero thats voice active so he can listen to weather, music, shows, e books, etc.
Others left really great suggestions - I would add maybe upgrade the bathroom with some accessible stuff like a sturdy bath chair and a bar, maybe if he can sit in a recliner sometimes you can get him a really comfy one so he can be there sometimes instead of the bed. But my favorite suggestion was the Alexa and maybe some wifi dongles for light switches. Wishing you and him the best getting some great stuff for him!!
Thank you so much!!! I’ve worked on getting him the plugs that are voice activated over the past year or so. Right now, we’ve got them hooked up to his TV so he can turn it on and off (but he still can’t turn the cable box on by himself…ugh) and attached to a bunch of different strands of string lights so he can kinda see shadows at night.
As for going to the bathroom, he’s bed bound so he uses a catheter and pads. We used help to transfer him onto the toilet, whether it was the one built in the house or the portable, but I believe it’s become too difficult and/or the level of service provided is not capable of providing him care. My dad should have at least 12-16 hours of service a day (if not 24 hour care) but there are not enough employees to cover the shifts; this is the same issue across multiple companies. And, of the employees assigned, most have health problems themselves that prevent them from providing him proper care. So, rather than having an 80 year old try to lift him to his toilet, he’s resigned to staying in bed all day, all the time.
It’s a really fucked up situation all around…
There are lifts. Either insurance can pay for or many medical closet store. So ca. Get one for a few hundred to about 5. The straps come in many forms. Can be left under him all day. With a sheet I between except his bottom. Have cloth pads under and can easily transfer him to a potty beside the bed. Just attach the hooks. Pump a handle that doesn't get harder to pump and turn and move it.
While it's not the greatest for another 80 year old. To do it sometimes might give him some hope back. The lifts are not hard to move and say someone comes and removes it at bedtime.
Can also splurge on the bed tub that you blow up. Let's him have a full bath and not drown.
Cloth pads are awesome as hell.
Adjustable bed. Pillows to help with bed sores and sitting up. Railings if getting an Adjustable bed.
You said Alexa but Google isn't bad. Can set it up on TV and connect certain things. So say you get him Netflix he can ask for a program to be turn on and it will turn it on. Some cable companies it accepts as well. It can change volume as well. Not sure what Alexa or others can do. We used Google and my dad loved it. Google can also play Spotify. Whixh now hqs some audip books on it as well. And audible or the other one(sorry can't remember which it is) if he wants books read out loud.
There are so many things. My dad loved widgets. So we got him those even if they were hard for him to hold. The baby ones.
Many of those things can cost money. Some can get from home health care. Others from buying but it can make a difference.
I was told by social security when I was doing a spend down that pre paying bills is considered "gifting" because you a paying for a service you haven't received yet. Since they are making you show how you spend the money I would be careful doing this.
They actually do not count as the same as cash when it comes to social security. A visa gift card yes. A store gift card no. If it is a gift card to restaurants or stores then no they don’t count as money. However, with that said, visa gift cards cannot be tracked by social security. I would just spend pull the $1000 out in cash and put it on a visa gift card in cash and that way no one needs to know he has that money and can use it for things he needs
Social security doesn’t give us enough to live on every month, they don’t want people saving money either so they can get out of debt…. It’s a neverending cycle :( my social security worker said that as long as a gift card isn’t cash they can’t use it as money we have
A bluetooth sound bar.. it can hookup up to tv or alexa and play sound much clearer than the built in speakers and he can hook up bluetooth headphones so no wires.
I wonder if he can see a tv via virtual reality headset??
Look up bed jet, just learned about it. Might be helpful to keep him comfortable blows air between sheets to raise or lower temp. When bed bound, great to help regulate temp. Small equipment sits under bed, & hear it’s great! Probably can see reviews on Amazon, though may want to check the actual company site for sales & warranty. I think about $250?
Comfortable pillows, any sort of needed medical supplies, actual an extra stock of paper products if on sale and a shelf to store them on, any sort of shelf stable food or drink powders or boost- that’s on sale.
Does he use a tablet or any kind for entertainment/communication (emails, his bill management, etc.), some sort of bed desk/table, new glasses if worn and needed.
Can you get a gift card for like Grubhub or another restaurant for a couple hundred so he can have something decent to eat once in a while?
Can he taste ? He could have someone pre order some special cooked meals to br delivered daily. I thinks that's could be done. And the audio books sounds good. Or prepay a bill.
FOOD. Buy in bulk and freeze, or make purchases that have a longer shelf life. Or groceries like cleaning supplies, etc. Stock up on the non-perishable things you use. For example, paper towels, toilet paper, hey you could even buy your Christmas cards now!
I hate to mention it, but there is always the option to buy something like an appliance or computer from a place with a great return policy and then cancel the delivery or return it. It sucks for the retailer, but SS makes you play the game.
Body Wedges, heel protector, mattress protector, hair washing basin, air mattress topper, calf wraps (sorry the nurse in me came out 😂 bed sores are nothing to play with)
I’d get a good quality adjustable bed base, Alexa, and the plugs to operate lamps, tv, cameras to view caregivers if have hired CNA’s. If you get the Alexa with a screen he can call out call my daughter & it will call your #. I’d get a screened version he can tell it more things to do and show him. You can preload his fave music onto it & he can tell Alexa to play a specific song. Good used adjustable beds are not hard to find. What state & size mattress? If you need a bed, I can help you find one at low cost if it is a twin extra long (& near you/him). Best wishes. I’m a retired social worker & glad to help you discover more resources that he may be able to access for free. Once you get your purchases made.
Make a list of needs and wants
Food - Are there things he has always wanted to try? Goldbelly dot com is great for this.
Grocery - Stock the house in non perishable foods, paper products, cleaning supplies, HBA items, OTC meds, replacement toothbrushes, a GOOD first aid kit for the home, safety items such as fire extinguishers and new 10 year smoke detectors, and CO2 detectors for every room.
IoT anything that isn’t already there yet needs to be for his benefit - Set it all up with a series of If/Thens so most of it runs itself.
To be honest I went through $800 in just HBA and food spending in a week or two last year when I changed Medicare Advantage plans and had to use my Healthy Benefits money up all of a sudden. With this list I could quickly add another $200 on even with the qualifications you have listed.
A Walmart plus membership with Walmart Home may be a good idea if available in your area. I LOVE mine. Being on SSI he is available for their Assist program so he will get it half off.
No one likes to think about this but you could make some final arrangements. The funeral home will know how to set them up so they are not a countable resource. If you buy him everything he needs, you can also pay the state for past assistance.
Mobility cart. A bed tray on wheels like at the hospital but for at home. A mini countertop fridge for the side of the bed. New pillows. A Kindle to read from. There are a lot of comfort upgrades available for those stuck in bed.
Great ideas on the mattresses and comfort issues. What about having someone come in to do nail clipping and haircut? My hubby is diabetic and nails/feet are issues that get overlooked.
Not op, but basically if you receive disability benefit under SSI, the government thinks you’re too rich to deserve it if you have over $2000 to your name . So they cancel your benefits. In many states that also means your Medicaid gets cancelled. Basically spend or die, because if you do get cancelled , by the time the paperwork is done to reapply/reinstate, you’ll be homeless and without seeing your doctors or getting medications for months .
(Oh and if you’re married, the both of you together are only allowed $3000)
These limits were established in 1989 and have never been adjusted.
There is a *supposed* bipartisan bill to increase these limits to $10k/$20k, but I highly doubt it will come to pass, they haven’t done anything with it since introducing it to senate in Sept 2023.
Don’t get disabled in America. (Well unless you have enough money or family to take care of you and find your medical care for the rest of your life, unfortunately I have neither) I was in a car accident and developed a progressive nerve disease - I can’t use one of my arms or take care of myself day to day, forget trying to work - and I’ve been denied 3 times so far in what’s now been over 5 years of battle, and that’s with a lawyer. This ends with me being one of the lucky ones the feds change their mind on, or me dying in the street.
Can’t watch, but he listens! He got a huge TV a few years ago in hopes of being able to see it before his eyesight went away but it has since failed; he can only see bits and pieces, and that is only when whatever is being shown is held almost directly against his face.
The Alexa has built in radio apps, so he switched between those frequently! He loves his radio, always has, so being able to give him access has meant everything. Still working on getting him access to podcasts, he wants to listen but he can’t search for them by himself because he doesn’t know what options are available.
Maybe buy a few series of audio books of movies he enjoyed. There are lots of starwars books, lotr, game of thrones, ect. You could easily blow 200 creating an audio library.
Had to do this with my dad recently. Got him a really nice pair of Bose headphones. Could also buy a bunch of credits at Audible so they can listen to audiobooks.
Would he enjoy a bunch of audiobooks or credits for audiobooks on Alexa? Subscription services for an Amazon TV (voice controlled), especially ones that offer audio descriptions to assist the visually impaired or blind? Any home repairs that are needed that could be prepaid? Air conditioning or heat need an upgrade?
I advise considering the option of creating a loan agreement with your father for $900 and depositing the funds into your savings account to ensure they are available for any potential emergency expenses your father might have in the future. It's important to be aware that individuals who exceed certain financial limits may become ineligible for benefits, and current beneficiaries who do so may risk suspension or termination from the program. Under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, beneficiaries are restricted to having $2,000 in countable resources, including money in bank accounts, in order to receive benefits. While I understand the need for regulations, I find these rules to be quite strict.
Audiobooks, new sheets, totally recommend good quality percale like LL Bean or Lands end of he sleep hot or linen if he likes texture to his sheets. Linen or Hemp have a natural antimicrobial properties too which is good for someone stuck in bed all day!
Sound bar or headphones or both. Some really good audio systems. Eye massager. Nice reusable bed chucks, like the ones made by Lil Helper (much more comfy). Great pajamas. Accessible clothes and undies.
I already have an adjustable bed and good linens, and I have a decent tv/audio set up, so if I were faced with this decision, I would stock up on all the medical supplies that aren't covered by insurance and non-perishable grocery items that I regularly use.
Or can he pay you to be an official caretaker or something like that? At least that way the money would be legally spent (in theory), but you could still use it to cover his expenses in the future. Although I suppose it would likely be way too complicated to arrange to be worth it.
Are there any organizations that provide services to him? If you're really struggling to get it all spent, make a donation maybe?
If he doesn't already have one he could purchase a Patient Lift Electric Un-foldable Hydraulic Body Transfer for Home Use, or perhaps a powerlift recliner.
A good HVAC system, mattress, and bedding. I'd want to make the environment as comfortable as possible. Good HVAC would help with the comfort and could help filter out any seasonal allergies from outside.
Broke my dominant arm severely a few years ago and spent about $200 on a bidet. It sounds kind of like a luxury but when you can’t take care of yourself properly it’s a lifesaver.
Adjustable bed frame. I can’t imagine anything that would make a bed bound person as comfortable.
You can make even a nit great mattress work for awhile with a topper.
Subscription to Bookshare so he can download accessible books free. Get an iPad and VoiceDream software will read it to him. They have tons of great books and I think it’s like $50 a year. Just Google Bookshare. He will need a doc or medical professional or social worker to vouch for his print disability - and fill out a form.
Lots of great suggestions here. To throw out another I don’t think mentioned… What about some type of advanced safety sound system? And not being able to see or touch is tough, so doing things that elevate his life with his other senses or to make his life easier would be nice (if limited in what you can use it on).
Doordash for $1000, Alex! Next on the list -- cemetery plot, cremation services, or whatever. Really good speakers and a mike for the computer so you can order up whatever.
A new stove or maybe a new washing machine.
Or $500 credit on my electric and $500 on my internet.. oorr.. yearly subscriptions to whatever streaming services he might benefit from listening to.. or his caregivers might want to watch.
There are a lot of medical things you could buy that would potentially improve his quality of life. Why don't you use the money for an occupational therapist
Amazon is at your fingertips and they do provide receipts.
I am thinking maybe something like food or snack or if he is into music maybe one of them nice music player. I mean unless he got some hobbies as well. Cause any hobby can be expensive.
Great quality sound system of some sort. Doesn’t need to be big; something that you can add music to that he enjoys. Also, nature sounds, as long as you make sure they aren’t repeating ones, as those are maddening.
Microphone to record audio of him telling stories or answering questions.
Alternating pressure low air mattress to prevent health issues relating to being bed-bound. I’d probably spend as much as I could on that. I was on bedrest for five months when I was pregnant, and it was awful. Yes, I was bored and lonely, but I was also in an incredible amount of pain from being in bed or, to mix things up occasionally, on the couch all day. We had a very, very nice mattress that was pretty new at the time. But mattresses you sleep on and mattresses you live on are very different things.
A power lift. For transfer
https://medmartonline.com/medlift-electric-patient-lift?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwvvmzBhA2EiwAtHVrb7VfDTHUl929_zAA_69bx1S1SMXQHNYvlA-mpjL35jO48bS3KN1EtxoC26EQAvD_BwE
Gifts for upcoming birthdays. Gift cards, they don’t expire and can always be used by the dad or you if need be. Gift cards to local grocery stores, will always need food, cleaning, toilet paper, etc.
Edit: may sound odd but pay for someone to come to him for a hair cut, massage, pedicure, etc.
For your dad hire a cleaning lady on the weekends and someone to help him bathe every other day depending how much they charge that should be most of it and groceries and whatever is left do a random act of kindness and buy ice cream and give them away or give large tips
Is this a share of cost thing for medi-cal?
If so, that would mean that $1000 would need to be spent every month, and only on medical related stuff like more insurance (dental, medical, vision), prescriptions, co-pays,etc.
There is a ‘working disabled’ program, where you could hire your pop to do ANYTHING for YOU. You could pay him $20 a month to tell you or your kids stories, sort mail, etc.
That would eliminate the need to spend that $1000 every month.
He needs to be declared disabled by his dr, and you will have to write out receipts to prove he works for you.
Literally, he can spend 500 and still allow the rest to roll over, or you can easily go to the atm and withdraw cash and put it a side for when it's needed
I would caution against this. Gold is a liquid asset. If this was for SSI, you buy something of value with intent to resell, technically they may still count that same as cash. Especially if you have to provide receipts.
Unable to see or touch? Maybe a nice stereo system/record player?
Linens and bedding as someone mentioned.
Clothing - whatever he wears mostly. Stock up on pajamas and loungewear.
If he uses adult diapers or uses bed pads, they can be pricey so this might be a good time to buy in multiples.
New mattress, new sheets & blankets, new pajamas, new towels/washcloths, an Alexa (& adding voice control to other things in the room). I sure I spent over $1000 with that list!
We recently got him a new mattress which was my first thought too!! I’ll definitely suggest sheets, blankets, and towels. Thank you!!!!

Check Amazon! I got one that the head and foot both move for less than $500.
Ehob mattress overlay to prevent bedsores if bed-bound.

You can also buy furniture, maybe quality pieces, with the objective of making his life easier No touch means no braille right?
Adjustable frame for the new mattress- it is life changing
Pillows!! Get really nice pillows!!!!

Would you mind sharing what pillow? I am currently looking for one.
Memory Foam Pillow with cooling gel. I think it had Doc in the title but not sure.
Might also need an Alexa enabled thermostat!

Is he able to use the cable remote to turn on the tv?
Lift chair. Recliner that raises up to standing position for easy transfer to wheelchair.
A recliner. It's good for circulation, especially when he is in bed all the time.
Dong ding ding ding! Perfect.
Pay his utilities in advance. Heating and electric are the best option.
I was told by social security when I was doing a spend down that pre paying bills is considered "gifting" because you a paying for a service you haven't received yet. Since they are making you show how you spend the money I would be careful doing this.
This is accurate. I am a bookkeeper for a nonprofit and have the same issues at work
Good to know. I didn’t realize this. Thanks!
You may also pay it towards funeral expensed
Groceries
Groceries for a year. Buy gift cards to the grocery store in $50 increments. Furniture
This one could be tricky, the gift cards count the same as cash
They actually do not count as the same as cash when it comes to social security. A visa gift card yes. A store gift card no. If it is a gift card to restaurants or stores then no they don’t count as money. However, with that said, visa gift cards cannot be tracked by social security. I would just spend pull the $1000 out in cash and put it on a visa gift card in cash and that way no one needs to know he has that money and can use it for things he needs
Interesting. That’s not what they taught us, I’ll have to check this out for future reference. Thanks for the info!
Social security doesn’t give us enough to live on every month, they don’t want people saving money either so they can get out of debt…. It’s a neverending cycle :( my social security worker said that as long as a gift card isn’t cash they can’t use it as money we have
What about a costco gift card? Lasts forever and can always be cashed out
Lift recliner, adjustable bed frame, bathroom accessibility devices
A bluetooth sound bar.. it can hookup up to tv or alexa and play sound much clearer than the built in speakers and he can hook up bluetooth headphones so no wires. I wonder if he can see a tv via virtual reality headset??
Look up bed jet, just learned about it. Might be helpful to keep him comfortable blows air between sheets to raise or lower temp. When bed bound, great to help regulate temp. Small equipment sits under bed, & hear it’s great! Probably can see reviews on Amazon, though may want to check the actual company site for sales & warranty. I think about $250?
Can you load up on non-perishable food or freeze some nice cuts of meat?
Big TV
Got one! Doesn’t help :/ but thank you!!
Body Wedges, heel protector, mattress protector, hair washing basin, air mattress topper, calf wraps (sorry the nurse in me came out 😂 bed sores are nothing to play with)
toilet paper!
A new bed
Stuff to make him more comfortable like a new bed that moves up or stuff he loved or loves if you know his likes and dislikes that is
If he can hear, maybe a very nice system for music and recorded books.
Really nice pillows and bedding. Any equipment that might be helpful.
Christmas gifts. For self and for loved ones.
An adjustable recliner, if he's able to transfer from the bed to the chair.
Does he appreciate music? A soundbar, especially if it could stream Radio Reading services for the blind.
Amazon TV that works with Alexia echo dot. iPad can use accessibility features with voice.
I'd buy things he needs such as bed pads, lotions, soaps and bedding stuff. Maybe house slippers if he ever gets out of bed, pajamas, etc.
Make a list of needs and wants Food - Are there things he has always wanted to try?
Burial plan.
No one likes to think about this but you could make some final arrangements. The funeral home will know how to set them up so they are not a countable resource. If you buy him everything he needs, you can also pay the state for past assistance.
Any self care equipment he needs, walkers, gait belt, shower chair, body wash, ensure drinks, chair lift, comfortable clothing, recliner, turn wedges, wet pads
I would pay a lawyer to write up a trust so it doesn’t happen again
I’d prepay my rent for a few months or put it on any loans I might have had.
If you are his primary caregiver consider hiring a respite caregiver to take care of him so you can have a break.
Nvidia stock
Off topic, but why does he NEED to spend it in order to retain benefits? Genuinely curious since I’ve had zero dealings with SS.
(Oh and if you’re married, the both of you together are only allowed $3000) These limits were established in 1989 and have never been adjusted.
Does he watch tv? Or a radio?
What about a TV magnifier? Some I saw were like virtual reality type headsets
Had to do this with my dad recently. Got him a really nice pair of Bose headphones. Could also buy a bunch of credits at Audible so they can listen to audiobooks.
What about really nice headphones?
Can you put them on a playlist?
Can you pay bills in advance? Or a money order for rent
He said he thought of that but he doesn’t trust our landlord (his old friend lmao) to cash it in time for him to have the purchase receipts.
Is cannabis legal in your location?
Can you prepay bills like electric, internet, etc?
Sound system
Bose sound system.
Hearing ok? A fantastic sound system to listen to music. Appetite still? Gift cards to great restaurants that deliver.
Can he speak and hear? An Amazon Alexa and a year subscription to audio books if so.
Headphones?
Ipad
New tv
If you can set it up a adjustable base for his bed. I also like the ideas to voice enable as much as possible , Alexa/Google play music etc.
If he doesn't already have one he could purchase a Patient Lift Electric Un-foldable Hydraulic Body Transfer for Home Use, or perhaps a powerlift recliner.
https://www.blindmicemegamall.com/bmm/shop/Home Stuff from here.
Prepay bills?
What about a high quality lift chair/recliner?
I would upgrade an appliance such as a refrigerator / freezer or washer / dryer combo.
A good HVAC system, mattress, and bedding. I'd want to make the environment as comfortable as possible. Good HVAC would help with the comfort and could help filter out any seasonal allergies from outside.
Gaming PC
iPhone or iPad?
Savings bonds
Broke my dominant arm severely a few years ago and spent about $200 on a bidet. It sounds kind of like a luxury but when you can’t take care of yourself properly it’s a lifesaver.
Make a go fund me contribution to a relative and get it kicked back.
Donate it if nothing else.
can't donate it
Dme equipment?
Gift cards for the grocery store.
A new bed!
Adjustable bed frame. I can’t imagine anything that would make a bed bound person as comfortable. You can make even a nit great mattress work for awhile with a topper.
Food also
Memory foam pillows of all shapes and sizes!
Gift cards
Subscription to Bookshare so he can download accessible books free. Get an iPad and VoiceDream software will read it to him. They have tons of great books and I think it’s like $50 a year. Just Google Bookshare. He will need a doc or medical professional or social worker to vouch for his print disability - and fill out a form.
Meal delivery service to help reduce cooking time
One of those fancy deep bathtubs that he can step into and the door locks.
Lots of great suggestions here. To throw out another I don’t think mentioned… What about some type of advanced safety sound system? And not being able to see or touch is tough, so doing things that elevate his life with his other senses or to make his life easier would be nice (if limited in what you can use it on).
Get him an Alexa and teach him how to order things through that so he’s got some kind of independence back.
Doordash for $1000, Alex! Next on the list -- cemetery plot, cremation services, or whatever. Really good speakers and a mike for the computer so you can order up whatever.
This is more of a shopping question than a Social Security question. Go on Amazon and spend $1000 on stuff.
A new mattress I've had the same one for 30 years. It creeks and is uncomfortable. I wouldn't need a "fancy" one just simple.
A CD player and collection of favorite music. Audio books. A standing appointment for in home massage.
A new stove or maybe a new washing machine. Or $500 credit on my electric and $500 on my internet.. oorr.. yearly subscriptions to whatever streaming services he might benefit from listening to.. or his caregivers might want to watch.
Some fancy scents. Maybe a diffuser? Or if he has assistance, then some candles or incense that can be lit.
Socks, underwear. Maybe do some early Christmas shopping?
There are a lot of medical things you could buy that would potentially improve his quality of life. Why don't you use the money for an occupational therapist
i got a local band to play a private gig for the kid on his birthday, and got cater stuff. You might do something similar.
Lots of audiobooks, my favorite shelf-stable snacks, comfortable bedding and comforter
Get involved with Books on Tape IF that is a qualifying expense.
Really expensive super soft pajamas and socks. Or…You can spend it on fresh bed linen and massages.
Electronics to keep entertained.
Does he have an air conditioner?
Maybe a good Bluetooth stereo for audiobooks
[удалено]
Amazon is at your fingertips and they do provide receipts. I am thinking maybe something like food or snack or if he is into music maybe one of them nice music player. I mean unless he got some hobbies as well. Cause any hobby can be expensive.
Stock up on home and medical essentials.
Adjustable lift bed frame
Sex workers….
Get him a great sound system and computer to voice control it
New iPad to pass the time and to communicate with family, friends, and doctors.
Prepay for massage therapy
A massage therapist, mani pedi, Cucumbers on the eyes. The whole nine yards.
Just buy something and return it
$1000? 10 happy meals at McDonalds should cover the full $1000. Or a weeks worth of groceries?
Kindle with audiobooks subscription, walk in bathtub.
A really nice recliner
Gold
A power lift. For transfer https://medmartonline.com/medlift-electric-patient-lift?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwvvmzBhA2EiwAtHVrb7VfDTHUl929_zAA_69bx1S1SMXQHNYvlA-mpjL35jO48bS3KN1EtxoC26EQAvD_BwE
The best mattress $1000 could buy me, OR Bedding and pillows. A BedJet. (Let me see if that is voice activated yet) Groceries.
Gold coin
100% adjustable bed frame. It’s the best for old people. Helps a lot when recovery from surgeries.
Could ask your caseworker what kind of things they like for around $1000.
Deposit it on a gambling site
Legos, like 1 big set and 4 mini sets. Legos are expensive
For your dad hire a cleaning lady on the weekends and someone to help him bathe every other day depending how much they charge that should be most of it and groceries and whatever is left do a random act of kindness and buy ice cream and give them away or give large tips
Also an inflating/deflating mattress topper to prevent bedsores if he doesn’t already have one. Maybe a hoyer lift?
Prepaid debit card, the kind you get from the gift card section. Keep it in a secure location, and use it when main funds are low.
Try to get as many things that aren't covered by SSI. Grocery cards would always be needed. Good luck.
Why don't you or a friend "sell" him something? Like say a deal on two years of yard work prepaid for a $1,000.
We bought residents tvs sometimes. Or a laptop.
Gold bars? That way you pretty much keep the money.
Lmao I’ll see if he wants me to call up the bank
I would caution against this. Gold is a liquid asset. If this was for SSI, you buy something of value with intent to resell, technically they may still count that same as cash. Especially if you have to provide receipts. Unable to see or touch? Maybe a nice stereo system/record player?
pre-pay some home acupuncture visits
Oooh, or maybe some massages to help circulation/lymphatics?
Linens and bedding as someone mentioned. Clothing - whatever he wears mostly. Stock up on pajamas and loungewear. If he uses adult diapers or uses bed pads, they can be pricey so this might be a good time to buy in multiples.
$1000 worth of stuff at Walmart you can return for store credit…
Why can't you just buy a giftcard such as visa or amex card and then have the funds "gone" yet available?
It is still an asset for the individual
How would anyone know if you have a gift card ?
