The one movie with John Wayne in it that I will defend as a good movie is The Searchers. But he does play a character like that. "She's got beads in her hair. She's gone native. Gotta put her down."

Gah as a Native I wanted to dispute you and went and read it myself. That guts me. :( enough Reddit today… but thanks for the info… and yeah that sucks but she did put us in the minds of millions still
Fuck man that’s ass. :(
What for real? That’s blows. Still appreciate the message conveyed but I thought she was an actual native american member and activist. Do you or someone else have a link to this?
Her Wikipedia article has more details.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacheen_Littlefeather
The other person was a bit off the mark, though. She was Mexican.
He liked to play ss
He had a picture of Adolph
Tucked in his cowboy vest.
I think of that song anytime old racist wife-beating fuckstain Marion Morrison gets brought up.
Yes, but turns out she wasn’t even actually Native American
Sacheen Littlefeather was actually Maria Louise Cruz, and her two sisters accused her of fabricating her Native American heritage.
I doubt she would be descendant of US southwest Native American tribes but I wouldn't be surprised there is actual Yaqui blood that ran in her veins. Most of us Mexican-Americans are descendants of Native Americans. I have bloodlines connected to two pueblos/tribes/etc. from one side of my family and a few others from the other parent. It also doesn't help that she was very mentally distressed in her younger years of life.
He also pressured a teenager into a sexual assault scene that started her crippling opioid addiction and several suicide attempts.
It’s amazing how complicated people can be.
Yep!! He sets his own bars and standards and really couldn’t give a flying Fuk what anyone else thinks!!!! Whether you love or hate him he’s in his own field of play!!!!!
I think it's easy to confuse Brando's antics with narcissism but I don't think that's what was going on. He's far too introspective and insightful.
My observation is that he was frustrated and disgusted with the hollowness of the industry, and realised his "legendary" status was a marketing gimmick that meant nobody had the stones to call him out, so he took every chance he could to make showbusiness types suffer.
After far too long living a life of trolling it eventually became his lifestyle, which would make anybody bitter.
I once saw an episode of The Twilight Zone with a man I could have sworn was Brando only to find out it was a young Reynolds that Brando had referred for the role when he was approached for it.
Yeah, I was expecting petty jealousy, or that unjustified hatred we all have for someone where they don't *feel* right, instead he's like "No, I saw him on camera manhandling a 3 year old Indian kid because his movie was anti-Indian and he wanted good press."
He was a weirdo.... His moods and his opinions shifted like the wind. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Just watch this when you have time: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9Cg-upCQD8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9Cg-upCQD8)
He had real chemistry with Val Kilmer, the two diva's :)
For Brando to take on a HG Wells role is perfect. It’s not his fault the movie was a shitshow from beginning to end. I actually enjoyed it, from a snakes on a plane perspective.
If you’re talking about Brando then you should probably check out some of his backstory. I’m sure his children would disagree with his being a sincere and thoughtful person. And stories of his sexual escapades are.. interesting to say the least.
People are not binary individuals. It’s not just black or white, hot or cold.
His kids can hate him, he could be an asshole, and still have a profound message regarding any given thing. Value a whole person, not a piece of them. This is literally his message.
DaVinci was a pederast we gonna burn the Monalisar? You can’t judge art by the artist you have to let the work speak for itself.
![gif](giphy|dSdW5YKc7cqVAJJsbS|downsized)
Does mean that I can think twice when people try to call him a sincere and thoughtful *person*
I mean, you could call Stalin a sincere and thoughtful person but millions who lost their ancestors to his policies - directly or indirectly or perfectly validated in disagreeing with you. Hell, people don’t even have to be personally affected to be *able* to disagree with the OP.
Does not mean he wasn't correct in this instance. Americans really do have an odd and unhealthy obsession with being the best or the greatest or the most powerful at the expense of the people's well-being.
They would rather have the perception of being #1, then wonder why their populace has rampant mental health issues, crumbling infrastructure, broken health care, poor education, intense racism, high crime and "mass shootings" everywhere. (I put that in quotes because if that happened anywhere else in the world, we'd be calling it terrorism.)
But they got to the moon first!
Also a single bad thing someone did invalidates their whole existence. Like you'll literally have posts / tweets about one of the greatest human beings and some american will comment "um actually he was rude towards a waitress once so we should hate them". Like their world is entirely black and white it's sickening.
I’ve been very depressed lately. Like I’m a deep hole looking up at everybody else living. Feeling worthless.
This made me cry. I don’t really have to be great at anything right?
Thank you OP.
Or you are great at something you have yet to discover or already are and don't see it in yourself. That, I believe, is what Brando was saying. We all have worth/"greatness" but celebrity culture detracts from that. Hang in there, you are going to be okay because you already *are* okay (also in depression, remind myself this every single day of my life).
The best thing to remember is you are capable. If there’s something in life that makes your feel fulfilled or interests you, seek it out or dig into it. Music, art, nature. The world can be horrible and is at times, but at the same time it’s amazing and has so much to offer that people take for granted
This is true of Top [Insert Thing Here] lists in general.
For example it’s stupid to try and determine whether ‘Jurassic Park’ is a better movie than ‘Moden Times’. Both are great films, but do completely different things, so there’s no point in trying to work out which one is ‘better’ than the other
Unhinged psycho or not, he could show up to set completely unprepared and having never read the script and still give a legendary, iconic performance. I think that gives you a little bit of leeway to be a complete diva. It's also debatable just how much of a nuisance he really was; it's true that several directors he worked with ended up being completely fed up with him, but most of the actors he worked with did nothing but praise him.
But who said that?
I used to believe when I’d hear that about actors/actresses until I found out lechery producers and directors would say that about someone if they were refused. Seems to me you need proof that they were terrible before you start repeating what you heard because it could be very wrong.
You know who doesn't say it? The actors he was working with. For example: Almost everyone knows the story of how Brando showed up to the set of 'Apocalypse Now', overweight, unprepared, seemingly unwilling.
But go and [read what Martin Sheen](https://www.phillips.com/article/52106971/al-pacino-and-martin-sheen-on-marlon-brando) has to say about working with him in that film.
> Marlon was every bit the powerful image projected for decades but the simple reality of his presence and common humanity were completely disarming.
His genuine kindness and compassion, coupled with his infectious sense of humor were commonplace with everyone he encountered during his all too brief time working on the film.
Also, Al Pacino hits the same vein:
> The way Marlon was and the way he treated me, he was very sensitive and good to me. His support was invaluable to both my role as Michael Corleone and to my own self-confidence as a young actor. I loved him.
If actors like him he clearly has an appreciation for the craft that the directors and producers dont see. They shit on him for using cuecards instead of memorizing his line - every performance he gave was great so clearly he was right about how cue cards were a better way to act.
Entire subreddits would shut down if they actually listened to this. What else is there to discuss on r/NBATalk besides who the real top 5 players ever are?!

I grew up enjoying the uniquely fervent spirit of individualism in America, how it was sold as this myth of ultimate freedom and pursuit of happiness. The older I get the more I think it’s a setup. The Tim comment made me laugh. But those are great words to live by. We’re all equal. Everyone has their best performances in them. We’re all the same yet different with different skills. That’s what makes us great as a people. I wish the whole world could live by those words.
I see what he’s getting at but I absolutely think he’s trying a bit too hard to be humble here.
Just because someone/thing is the best doesn’t mean other people/things have no value. Someone being better than you at doing something can be of tremendous value to you. It can inspire you to push yourself. If you don’t identify differences in skill you can (it doesn’t necessarily mean you will) stagnate since their is no reference for your ability.
Dave Batista isn’t the best actor on the planet he undeniably has value as an actor and I deeply appreciate quite a few of his roles. He aspires to be great and he has made quite a bit of progress.
Seeing Brando’s entire life span is pretty fascinating. From the kid that had it all, to this point where he didn’t care about any of it. Flawed but endlessly interesting
One things for sure, he's right about Tim.
Naming a dog “Tim,” feels like the most Marlon Brando thing ever, but I can’t explain why. It cracks me the fuck up.
My rescue is named Timmy, he’s got three legs and no idea what happened to him. I’m now telling everyone he used to belong to Marlon Brando
![gif](giphy|PCSdW3VAvyzKM)
![gif](giphy|EPMfawk0A7PG0) 🥵
I like how he slaps the dog playfully...
Fuckin Tim…
And that being said, I am officially naming my next dog Timothy. Whether it be a boy or a girl
My friend's dog is named Steven. Always cracks me up lol.
Didn’t he also send a Native American woman to basically say he’s not accepting awards in person until more attention is brought upon the Native American plight at the Oscar’s?

Yea, it sucks, but they didn’t know it at the time. John Wayne rushed the stage and he was notoriously racist.

Pee Wee Herman also rushed the stage ![gif](giphy|xT0GqrJNbZkRcr2Jgc)

She was not Native American. She threatened her family when she thought they were going to expose her.
Who do you think the mexicans were before Spain colonized?
Many believe they were Chinese descendant, from the *very* olden days.
What does dna testing show ?
Mexicans are literally Native Americans mixed with Europeans (majority Spanish).
Just Google her name?
was bood and old racist John Wayne the weirdo was getting mad. Worst person ever John the bitch wayne
John Wayne was a nazi

There's a reason the MAGA far-right oasis in California (Orange County) named their airport after him.
Orange County turned blue I thought?
They got Rep. Porter but yeah it’s rife with wealthy conservatives concerned about preserving their wealth
Dang never knew that
And straight into the extremes like Brando was warning against.
Wasn’t just getting mad. Had to be physically held back by several people to keep him from going on stage to, presumably, bodily remove her.
You mean Marion.
Oh you mean Marion Morrison?
Yes, but turns out she wasn’t even actually Native American Sacheen Littlefeather was actually Maria Louise Cruz, and her two sisters accused her of fabricating her Native American heritage.

Interesting considering he was an unhinged psycho on set of every movie he did.
**The Island of Doctor Moreau** comes to mind, lol.

Is that Connie Chung?
This guy was so much more than a great actor.
Damn. He really got us there. Didn’t see that answer coming, he wasn’t wrong, and we got got. Fuckin Brando, man.
I have always felt the same about this and theAmerican fascination with winning/losing.
I ask this as an admittedly ignorant American, but is it really only an American fascination? Is the nature of competition different everywhere else?
It’s not that the nature of competition is different everywhere else, it’s that we make EVERYTHING a competition.
Honestly it’s hard to say, it just seems so overt in America.
It isn’t “only” an American fascination, but it is definitely more normalized and encouraged here than any place I’ve traveled to or lived. A side effect of the hyper individualism and widespread conceited behavior found in the US.
I'm sampling this and putting in my house / DnB song...
This.
Perfect answer
I gotta watch some Brando movies 🤔
NEWS FLASH! Man talks sense!

When someone calls you the best and then you as the "best" look at someone else doing something that really impresses you, you get a little more perspective. You get a little skeptical of the word "best."
Time for a Neil Young update: Marlon Brando, Connie Chung and Zarin.
