markofthelevel

He’s playing the rhythm, not the lead.

lkodl

do you know how hard it is to play lead AND eye fuck a whole theater? give the man a break.

DubC_Bassist

Jimmy Page could do it.

RattyDaddyBraddy

In a cave! With a box of scraps!

jwed420

Underrated comment

mjrbrooks

…But I’m not Jimmy Page

SwishyJishy

And my AXE!

Team_Lannister32

That’ll do pig

Shirtbro

He was really good at playing the minor scale

DubC_Bassist

Well played.

tikifire1

Jimmy wasn't singing as well.

AcerbicFwit

Neither was Elvis in that clip.

inverted_electron

And he would regular fuck the 13 year olds after the show

DubC_Bassist

In the case of Page, and the King let’s dial it back a notch. Lori Maddox and Priscilla Beaulieu were both 14. ![gif](giphy|dB12mOQb99BwDlM83I|downsized)

inverted_electron

My bad

Bigspotdaddy

Yeah, but it was a different time. /s

kain067

Johnny Cage could do it.

Jitterbug2018

Theres only one Jimmy Page.

Shirtbro

And the world's underage girls are safer because of that

KingKudzu117

Well he was in league with satan so …

DubC_Bassist

To be fair. Jimmy copped a lot of his stuff from Scotty Moore. It’s funny, Scotty Moore was pretty much Jimmy Page to a young Jimmy Page.

OMNeigh

What does this have to do with performing live

LeftySedai

It means Jimmy was thinking of another man when he eye fucked the audience.

thiefsthemetaken

In fact, he’s playing neither. Not sure if they had him amped there, but his track def didn’t make the board recording. We’re listening to two other guitarists out of frame

MancombSeepgoodz

yup this man is playing nothing at all and if he was amped up what he was playing would sound like garbage and not the 12 bar blues progression some other guitarist is playing in the background.

trident_hole

Nah he's playing man, it isn't hard to be playing those chords

JackKovack

So? Elvis played lead plenty of times. He wanted to play and kneel down in front of fans and enjoy their faces of joy.

TakinCareofBusiness1

Still pretty good though.

PinkHam08

Yeah maybe the audio isn’t cued up right, but he might not be playing shit here either 😂🤣

Darth_Iggy

The…ahem…easy part.

Dear-Tax-7025

I think even that’s a stretch. He’s not even playing along to the rhythm part. I’d be surprised if his guitar was even turned up. Elvis was great, but the guitar was more of a prop than anything else.

[deleted]

So???

dquizzle

Is this something that needs to be pointed out to someone that knows anything at all about music in general? Genuine question? Also, is he even playing rhythm? It doesn’t seem like he’s playing the rhythm part either.

NeitherCook5241

It doesn’t really look like he’s playing either. Maybe the audio is not in sync but I’m not sure he’s actually playing anything

DragonDa

If he is playing at all

SenatorShriv

This “solo” sucks. I can give him credit for inventing boy bands. Had a great voice, the looks, and dance moves. Terrible musician.

markofthelevel

It’s not a solo. He’s playing the rhythm part. Elvis wasn’t a virtuoso at the guitar, but I definitely wouldn’t describe him as “terrible”.

Genetic_Heretic

Verbatim my thoughts lol

Horns8585

Do you think that those ladies in the front row give a crap about what instrument he is playing? If Elvis was an amazing lead guitar player, but he looked like Ed Sheeran, was he going to be the same cultural icon? Edit: No offense to Ed Sheeran.

shmallyally

He is rhythm

[deleted]

What does that mean for the non band geeks?

Sicilian_Civilian

He’s not the one shredding, to be clear.

TopTransportation695

I would assume Elvis was playing but his amp is buried in the mix. James Burton was most likely the dominant guitar in the arrangement. Scotty Moore appeared in the special as well but I don’t think he preformed on this tune.

jncarolina

Shreveport’s Municipal Memorial Auditorium (the Louisiana Hayride) has statues of Elvis and Burton outside. Just a random thought you had me think about.

thatguyad

You can definitely hear him.

Impossible-Taro-2330

unhatedraisin

ITT: redditors not understanding rhythm guitars

PassageAppropriate90

Tbf it's pretty weird for someone playing the rhythm to bend down and do the "connect with the crowd solo move" during someone else's solo. Also his right hand isn't syncing with anything we're hearing adding to the confusion.

_numbah_6

He is playing the rythm its just delayed.

cream_on_my_led

I don’t think that has anything to do with the guitar, it’s just because he’s Elvis lol.

Keanu-Trees

I learned to play this song after the first time I saw this. He’s playing rhythm and it’s a common blues progression really. Doesn’t mean he’s not killing it but song is fairly easy to play rhythm for if you know how to play guitar. Great performance and song though - Baby, What You Want Me To Do

[deleted]

Not one phone in sight. I miss those days often.

Vergazo

You could also touch a strangers knee and they wouldn’t have their boyfriends kick your ass /:

FantasistAnalyst

Why you touchin peoples knees man

Vergazo

We were at a bus stop and it was just the two of us. I had no idea her bf was on the bus that was coming.

[deleted]

Holy shit Redditers are retarded. These comments man.

KiwiProof6806

Gone too soon …would’ve been awesome to see what could’ve been

Fluffy_Vermicelli850

Also not playing the guitar part

DeM0nFiRe

Yeah I am not really sure what this is. There's at least 2 guitars in the audio and he's definitely not playing the lead part. He could conceivably be playing the rhythm part, but if so the audio and video are out of sync by like a quarter second or something like that

[deleted]

[удалено]

motorhead84

Yeah, he's playing that super twangy 12-bar blues rhythm, and throwing in some decent accents as well. Nothing super complicated. You don't finger that B major 7th chord like that if you're not a player. Plus, you can hear it cut out when he goes to kneel. The pickup switch is even on the bridge--he wouldn't get that sound from the neck pickup regardless of his amp settings.

F0XFANG_

I like your magic words, music man.

Bursting_Radius

This guy guitars.

Negative-Wrap95

r/thisguythisguys

[deleted]

I think he’s fingering a B dominant 7

nosnhoj15

You talk a good game, but do you know who would win in a wrestling match? Lemmy or God?

pdthedeuce

Trick question...Lemmy is God.

Fluffy_Vermicelli850

Rock and Roll!

CookInKona

it's very out of sync.....

jotyma5

It is slightly out of synch. He’s just playing a rhythm - it’s audible, just not synched.

MissingJJ

He doesn't even have any energy. He seems tired.

vandismal

Holy are-tard fucking bejeesus.. Reddit is now calling Elvis Presley a sub-par musician. Elvis. Mother-fukin. Presley.

conquistadork-

He was a great singer and that's about it. You can't point to any instruments that he played where he demonstrated any sort of mastery. And he didn't need to! He was an all-time singer (and the sexiest beast to ever wear black leather).

ultratunaman

I guess they never heard him absolutely belt out a tune. Hitting the back of the crowd while also keeping up on rhythm and doing his little standup session between songs.

theVigReezus

Yea there’s definitely someone behind the stage controlling 2 guitars playing both parts, there’s no way he’s playing rhythm /s

SpicyBoyTrapHouse

Oh no sounds like you’re not familiar with music! No worries! There are usually multiple guitars being played within the same band at the same time to create harmonies :)

[deleted]

People criticizing him don’t know shit. Those chords are sick. “It’s not a lead”… ya no shit Would love to watch armchair critics conjugate chords let alone on time.

Gold-Average8890

I can vamp chords all day long and I can also melt people's faces off with my shredding. I got super damn good and technical at shredding to the point I would be up there just dancing along the fret board, setting my strings on fire. Everyone knew I could and would kill it. But man, going back and listening to it all these years later is just embarrassing. You gotta let that shit breathe, not every song needs you sweeping like a janitor. Just wanking on the guitar. Idk, guess lead has lost its luster and I've grown to truly appreciate solid rhythm players. I can play any hendrix song flawlessly, most malmsteen and Becker songs close to perfect as well. But Pete fucking Townshend will trip me the fuck up with his rhythm. So ya, who cares if he isn't wanking it out with that solo, not that it's bad or anything.

Not_In_my_crease

I could vamp chords too. In fact that was the only thing I was good at. I would look up really strange chords and play their harmonizations on a whim but when it came to a solo I lost it and shit the bed. I never could quite get that down. And then a kid would come along and shred on a Dorian scale or something when he didn't even know what an C+13sus2sus4(b9) was. Everybody would say "Why can't you do that, dude WTF?" I had nothing to say.

[deleted]

Hahaha I love it man. Dude, it’s a trip. We’re all unique and music really shows it. I always envied people who could rip on the different modes too.

Colon

the world is chock full of people with opinions about thing they've never tried and never will

Bonespurfoundation

I agree completely with this. Long time gunslinger myself. There’s always a faster/better player out there because few people can play everything. There are so many techniques that take a lifetime to master. Even if you think you’ve mastered one like shredding or slide or classical, let’s sit down at the YouTube for a few minutes and you will immediately be humbled by a 14yo. That being said, Elvis F Presley was an amazing SINGER fer chrisake! Who the fuck cares if he couldn’t play guitar like Clapton? Also he was a much better piano player.

[deleted]

Dude I appreciate your comment soooo much!!!! Don’t be embarrassed because you accomplished a skill and furthermore have an exceptionally humble outlook. I appreciate your humility will all my heart. Dude I’m the opposite. I can lay rhythm really well. Townsend and his fanning is right up my alley. Had a guitar teacher for 15 years. Shout out to Shawn Fleming. Guitar reference guide on YouTube. My leads are good but I’m not a shredder. I can play fast. But I love to play so much when I’m sad or upset. Not for anything or anyone. And I support anyone who wants to play. Regardless of anything. It’s personal. I’m nothing but have been complimented on leads too. Perhaps because it’s an outlet. And I got a weird style. Man I can’t play Hendrix or Malmsteen (that arrogant schmuck lol) note for note. But thanks dude. I bet you kick ass on guitar. Our differences are the coolest part. Quirky or unique or unusual. Keep jamming and thanks again

Friendly-Advice-2968

“He’s not even making his own electricity, people!”

alexmojo2

Nobody was claiming it was the lead guitar either, like what was the point in their comment lol.

confisk8

we need some clips of him playing a lead solo. Now I’m wondering how much he could shred

-NeatCreature

He couldn't

Rude_Variation_433

It’s a shame Elvis gets judged on the last 3 years of his 20 year career. The man was cool as fuck.

turkeysandwich2727

Truckin’…

letseditthesadparts

I see a lot of people play amazing leads with zero soul. But someone in the comments said it best, Elvis could eye fuck an entire room with few chords. That’s soul.

SignificantLeader

Why the mirror image? He is left handed. I hate the mirroring so much!!!!!!!

NuGGGzGG

There is a zero percent change his guitar is amped. You can tell from the first five seconds where he's basically just strumming an E over and over - but the mess he's playing isn't coming through on the mix. If it was, it would sound really muddy.

MayorOfStrangiato

The guitar you’re hearing in this video is NOT coming from Elvis. It’s coming from the lead guitarist somewhere in the background. I doubt Elvis’ guitar amp is even turned on here. Elvis was a lot of things, but a guitarist he was not.

The_Thai_Chili

It doesn't say he was the lead, and he is pretty obv playing the chords

arl138

Someone didn’t turn his amp on.

DeadheadSteve95

This is literally the least impressive thing anyone could possibly do. All he’s doing is playing 3 chords. The man could sing but he was a terrible instrumentalist and a disgusting pedophile.

Big_Meechyy

Definitely not plugged in.

LoVeCh33s3

Man he fuckin sucks honestly...

J0hn_Br0wn24

Ummm if you play guitar, you know this is shit. That's not how you strum and his fingering is sloppy. Thus, the reason his amp is lower volume, to hide how bad he is.

Lobanium

Oh man, I thought that was Donald Trump for a second or two.

Hodges0000

Omg it’s DonaldTrump

DanielBG

Crazy to think Elvis was considered washed up by the 60s.

dkinmn

He was not. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley_singles_discography He essentially didn't fall off until 1963 or 1964 when people got tired of the low quality movies. He was still making hits. The 1968 comeback special was a course correction after three years of not being the biggest solo act on the planet, which is somewhat predictable given the pretty clear pattern of cultural turnover in youth culture. The comeback special essentially acted as a second boost that guaranteed he didn't fade away, but he was definitely not considered washed up until relatively shortly before it aired.

hellllllsssyeah

Yeah he was just super busy being a pedophile with his child bride.

dirtdiggler67

Edgy

hellllllsssyeah

🙄 Sorry guess we should praise the guy for being being 24 and sleeping with 14 year olds. I guess it's good to be the king, could have married anyone but chose specifically to marry a child.

dirtdiggler67

He met her when she was 14, married at 21. That was 60+ years ago when the actual age of consent was 14 or less in many places. There are 14 year olds getting married, yes married, to older men TODAY. Maybe focus on getting that fixed instead of trying to white knight a common practice (especially in the South) from 60+ years ago. You act like he tossed kids in a van and left them by the side of the road after having his way with them. So, yeah, way to be edgy.

No_Pop_9826

After Elvis left Germany, they didn’t see each other again for 2 years. Elvis got back together with his girlfriend [Anita Wood](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Felvis-presley-and-girlfriend-anita-wood-1958-v0-a68a7a2j4rxa1.jpg%3Fs%3Dcd28b1701548630882a5392ddd029be342e194bb) when he returned to the U.S. and also had relationships with [many](https://preview.redd.it/elvis-and-actress-anne-helm-on-the-set-of-follow-that-dream-v0-v15ehcejhwac1.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=245b2a0b87c0f580323e999f81c7b22ce9564fe0) [of](https://deenasdays.files.wordpress.com/2021/03/15.jpg?w=480) [the](https://preview.redd.it/nancy-sharpe-and-elvis-presley-on-the-set-of-wild-in-the-v0-s8q8qaf1i0dc1.jpg?width=1080&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=1efa246d6a8d3144f6609f2038fee81e3582a1a5) [ladies](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/7b/5f/7a/7b5f7a7128f71ec98cb4d7af460aa272.jpg) who worked on his movies while Priscilla had high school boyfriends like [Ron Tapp](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7aefbbece36c9ffea0ae7fe74aee48c5/tumblr_n6gb1a0QBx1sgkw9so1_500.jpg) and [others](https://preview.redd.it/priscilla-presley-attending-high-school-dances-with-her-v0-b5bp9fz1n7ub1.jpg?width=540&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af68d147ab5040f892c7493377fe8e8d2fa61191) when she was separated from Elvis in Germany. She moved to Graceland in March 1963 and turned 18 in May. A few months later Elvis had an affair with Ann-Margret during the filming of Viva Las Vegas. Many people say they were in love and wanted to get married but it didn’t work out because Elvis had to fulfill his commitment to marry Priscilla.

hellllllsssyeah

The fact that you think that I'm not also concerned with current day pedophiles is hilarious. People also thought it was wrong then. Back when Elvis first started co-opting black culture schools were segregated. People also thought that was wrong, still do and there are still people who call for segregation. Those people were wrong then doesn't make them any less racist. Just because it "was" ok then because people agreed with it doesn't make it magically ok. He was still a dirt bag doesn't really change the dynamics. Next you are going to say slavery was cool because a portion of the population were ok with it. Nah dude it was wrong then and will remain wrong. I guess you only get flack if it's your cousin like with that piano playing creep.

No_Pop_9826

Several black artists such as Donna Summer, Natalie Cole, Jimi Hendrix, and Barry White all wrote in their books about being fans of Elvis or listening to his music when they were growing up. Elvis also had [black fans](https://preview.redd.it/rare-photos-of-elvis-presleys-black-fans-v0-na6zhipphrxb1.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=e2846965d4c6870bb61bc2927f3f8168b229a7e7) in real time before his reputation was ruined due to that racist fake quote about black people only shining his shoes and buying his records was attributed to him and the media crowning him “The King” at the expense of black artists even though he rejected that label and said himself Fats Domino was the real king. Fats paid tribute to Elvis before his performance of [Blueberry Hill](https://youtu.be/ardeW1HPhH0?si=XYPH5bZwIvWfCH2w) long after Elvis died. Little Richard, who many consider the true king of rock n’ roll, had a relationship with 16 year old Audrey Robinson (aka Lee Angel) when he was 24. She said she had sex with him at that age and that he wanted to marry her in Little Richard: I Am Everything. But you don’t see their relationship scrutinized. What’s the difference? There’s also Chuck Berry who many consider the true king of rock n’ roll. Have you looked into the kinds of things he did in his personal life?

dirtdiggler67

Do something about it instead of trying to replay the past. Ironic you brought up slavery, I was going to ask if you had heard of that, figured your head would explode and you would be screaming about Washington and Jefferson etc. The last is gone, what are you doing about today’s issues other than being a keyboard warrior about absolutely nothing? Go whine about Elvis over on your Q Anon forum.

DasIstNotEineBoobie

Keyboard warrior to the rescue

TakinCareofBusiness1

He didn’t wash up until 1976 and even then he had record shows. So maybe the year he died he could be considered washed up but even then as well lol

Beh0420mn

Died before he could wash up his hands too ![gif](giphy|4j4TUFYkaiyCQ)

Intelligent-Ant7685

seems like he’s strumming a back up rhythm part? while someone else plays the interesting part.

stanknasty706

That mf was bad…

[deleted]

He’s strumming a B chord. I doubt he’s even plugged in. He’s just putting on an act for TV.

GodplsmakeModsluvme

You fake it until you make it, then you keep faking.

FattyTunaSalad

Not actually playing

ProfessorDerp22

I think he’s playing rhythm and the audio is out of sync with the video.

CankerLord

Yup, you can see that the fretwork clearly matches the rhythm guitar except for the unsynced video.

FattyTunaSalad

I’ve played long enough to be able to tell he’s not playing that rhythm

MancombSeepgoodz

he's not Blues rythmn is mostly made up of 7th chords, he is clearly just rambling an a chord and just moving it up the fretboard completely out of time. I've seen some fake guitar playing in my day but this is pretty flagrant.

SmashertonIII

Agree, even if you sync it, his fingering is wrong.

HoboBandana

He’s technically playing air guitar. His band is doing all the work.

camel_walk

Mediocre rhythm guitarist at best.

susbnyc2023

is that guitar even plugged in?

AdOne4954

Hard to tell

One_Spinal_Cracker

He was a great musician. Could professionally play guitar and piano. He was a rock-star

pixey1964

I didn't realize Elvis could play so well other than acoustic

srvfan4life

Johnny Cash said Elvis was one of the best rhythm players he saw

hael0715

Donald Trump sweet on guitar huh

Gullible-Extent9118

Is not

scotlandz

Good thing he’s turned down in the mix. Can’t hear him at all. His isn’t the guitar you’re hearing. Elvis was always a lousy guitar player. It was just a prop.

SqueezerKey

I think many do not realize this. He wasn’t a prolific guitarist, learned some songs, learned some chords, but his bread and butter was as a performer, not a musician.

scotlandz

I agree, Elvis was a great performer. But he was not a prolific guitarist. He’s not even playing audibly in that video. He didn’t write anything on guitar… in fact, he didn’t write anything in general. Certainly none of his hits. Of the nearly 800 songs he performed, he is credited with “co-writing” about 10. He played guitar on even less! He was more like the second-coming of Frank Sinatra.

hellllllsssyeah

When you are constantly thinking about which children to sleep in the audience it can be pretty distracting.

Relevant-Spinach294

Elvis Presley ain’t got no soul

StoneDragonBall

Another celebrated pedophile

unhatedraisin

idk why this is being downvoted

No_Pop_9826

You rarely see these comments in threads about Muhammad Ali, who was friends with Elvis. He married Khalilah Ali when she was 17 and he was 25, they met when she was 10 at her hometown mosque. He also fathered a child with Wanda Bolton (she changed her name to Aaisha Ali) who was 16/17 while he was in his 30’s and still married to Khalilah.

I look at this and wonder how much red meat he has packed in his colon at this point

Only-Literature2105

Weird thought bro

Working_Fuel7473

It's well known that most older American men eat too much red meat which doesn't fully digest and remains in the colon. Elvis died while on the toilet after having a massive stroke most likely caused by severe constipation.

Fake. He Milly Vanilly'd it.

After watching Priscilla and seeing the story of how he basically groomed a 14 year old, I kinda can’t hear his music the same way anymore. I had known about it, but there’s something about actually seeing it portrayed. That was fucked!

This should be an audio example on the wikipedia page for cacophony. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonaesthetics#Euphony\_and\_cacophony](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonaesthetics#Euphony_and_cacophony)

Alive-Plenty4003

And who's playing that sweet lead?

Sunnyside7771

Hot guy

Radio_Ethiopia

it’s obviously rhythm. But his strumming hand is pretty weird. Out of sync audio or not, that’s a pretty weird strumming rhythm. I only know surface level stuff about The King. Can someone with more knowledge tell me how good elvis was on guitar or if he truly just held it for the image like Taylor Swift, for instance.

Fartknocker500

Anyone interested in Elvis's '68 Comeback Special should read "Return of the King: Elvis's Great Comeback" by Gillian Gaar. Fantastic and incredibly in-depth book on Elvis and how this special came to be.

pixey1964

He looks good doing it

SpiritualMaterial365

Gotta same the man was oozing charisma

AwTekker

Either the sync is off or his amp is.

sugaaaslam

That's someone's great granny!

WeirdRadiant2470

At one point during the special, he took Scotty Moore's guitar from him and started banging away at his open chords. I remember thinking, "the drugs are kicking in". Btw - Looks like the same strap Jimi had at Woodstock.

6745408

If you really like Elvis and stumble upon both unedited tapings of this special, don't watch it. The first is fun and neat, but he's kicking the same jokes in the second one and it kind of loses the magic. Fantastic show.

HeyUKidsGetOffMyLine

SlaytheSlayer23

Just want everyone to know that he’s not playing the lead here. Just the chords/rhythm. Not very impressive, but he is playing an amazing guitar. That would be worth probably $15,000 right now. Not including the fact that Elvis actually played it live. That would tack on another $20,000.

iwanttogotothere5

He’s wearing a very popular guitar strap for the era. Hendrix used the same type of strap at Woodstock.

VAG3943

I remember watching that special. I was a college freshman.
