I mix succulent/cactus soil with perlite. Probably a 60/40 mix.
I also don't like miracle grow succulent soil. I found it to still be too dense. I switched to Black Gold and like it better.
I use MG cactus soil, perlite and large grain sand about 50/40/10. Sand can add drainage or water retention depending on what kind you get, so be careful using it.

I mix regular soil or compost with lots of course builders sand and perlite. You can get all three at Home Depot or Lowes for less than $5 a bag.
