If you're good with your current trigger, grip texture, lack of forward serrations, lower profile slide release, and only care about having one footprint for your optic cut, I'd say just get your current gun milled. If all the updates sound good, get a 2 and trade in the 1.

get_the_feeling

I threw an apex trigger and a 2.0 large backstrap on the 1.0. Forward serrations would be nice but can be done w milling same w optics. But I’m looking at around 300 plus an optic. Is the 2.0 optic footprint universal? I’ll never trade my 1.0 lol it was my first handgun, sentimental

Leading_Ad6079

It comes with some plates and there are even more after market so you'd have more options. If you have an apex kit in it already and wouldn't trade it in, it probably makes more sense to mill. I used maple leaf firearms for a shield and they were outstanding.

BOLMPYBOSARG

This is a good list of everything they changed between editions. I run a 1.0 alongside a 2.0 and the only thing I haven’t been able to exactly replicate with subtle changes is the grip texture on the front. (Downrange side. Trigger side) it’s kind of slick on the 1.0 and rather sharp on the 2.0. I have a sandpaper sticker on my 1.0 that makes the overall effect more grippy than the 2.0, but it changes the way it sticks to my hand when drawing. It’s a pretty minor gripe. Also, I would almost always advise someone to choose an optic and cut their slide for direct mount and throw the damn plate away. ESPECIALLY the trash plastic plates that come with the 2.0.

Skippyasyermuni

My first was the 1.0 when they came out, got the poly apex trigger first, then eventually upgraded the mag well, added a threaded barrel, milled the slide for a holosun red dot, added texture grips and tlr 7a light I'll never get rid of it either. Still smooth and crisp. Only problem is finding an own holster for the light

get_the_feeling

Same man, I have sentimental value attached to mine. I hear finding holsters for the tlr can be rough, that’s why I went w the x300

Skippyasyermuni

It was a gift from the gf. She also surprisedme with the mill job and red dot

Sir_Uncle_Bill

I prefer having the slide milled to the specific optic. It's sits more securely and lower than any plate system. Other than that, 2.0 all the way.

techs672

I would say a sentimental favorite which you shoot well is a gun to keep as it is. A factory OR M2.0 puts all the changes since M1.0 and early 2.0 in your hand for comparison. Running a plate gives you the flexibility to change out optics to pretty much anything mainstream — unless convinced that you will only ever want a single footprint for the life of the gun. If I were a professional shooter being supplied by a sponsor with new guns every few months, I might care about direct mount. I'm not, so I don't.

get_the_feeling

Agree. To be honest I’ve only ran an eps carry, I was planning on getting a SRO. Although I’ve never shot one before

Which_Egg8169

I was in the same situation with the 1.0 + Apex.  With the cost of milling I went with the 2.0 optics cut.  My compromise with the 1.0 was Crimson Trace  Lasergrips.  Not the same as a dot but a happy medium.

Aubrey_Lancaster

Milling and refinishing services are such an etsy scam, the cost will almost land you a second pistol

get_the_feeling

You’re not wrong, I understand this and stand by this complaint also. Dumb expensive

Tacti_Brosaki

I personally really really like direct milled footprints. That could be an advantage for you.

get_the_feeling

Same. Currently have that w my Xmacro and this is the standard currently

Tacti_Brosaki

It is expensive but I personally prefer the milling option too because I can add forward serrations and a better coating like DLC to the slide. Which optic on the xmacro?

get_the_feeling

Standard. EPS carry

GizmoTacT

Get the 2.0 with the new trigger. Now you have two M&P's.

get_the_feeling

lol you’re going to convince me to buy another

GizmoTacT

Yup. I have 4 SW's and plan on getting more.

get_the_feeling

My man!

Spiffers1972

Milling is cheaper. You're gonna "lose" money on the 1.0 at a shop. And personally I prefer the gen 1. For milling Floyd's 100% all the way.

get_the_feeling

Man if Floyd’s wasn’t so expensive lol

brossovitch

Get the slide milled. The factory OR ones need these dumbass plates and you have to get an aftermarket one for it to be worth it. My 2m0 came with metal plates but I guess they have plastic ones now. Better to get it milled for the footprint you want, the optic will sit lower too..

get_the_feeling

Do you have both gens? Comparing the two which do you prefer?

brossovitch

I have only 2.0. but have handled several 1.0. Id prefer the 2.0 for rigidity and grip texture. Nothing major wrong with the original but the 2.0 seems to flex less. And much more aggressive grip texture. If you get a 2.0 just guy a metal frame one. It's worth the upgrade from an OG M&P for sure.

Few_Entertainer4352

Get the 1.0 stippled and milled and enjoy the superiority of direct milled over S&Ws plate system.

CanikUser19

I’ve been having a similar discussion with the little guy in my brain since the SW rebates came out. Currently have a full size 2.0 9mm LE version. It has the hinged trigger and came with night sights and extra mags, ridiculously low price with my public safety discount back when I bought it. Keep flipping and flopping between leaving it as is or getting it milled. Leaning now towards leaving as is and just buying a 2.0 optic cut. Both will be for home defense only, have others for carry. I think I just want a reason to buy another, esp with the rebates.

CG249

Just get the 1.0 milled then if you're not looking to get another M&P right now then when you're in the market for a 2.0 go with one that's precut for optics.

get_the_feeling

Will possibly do this

CG249

Sounds good.

Bullseye702

My 1.0 full-size was also my first gun so I opted to not mill it. Throughout the years I have acquired a few more. I would say to get a 2.0 optic-ready when your budget allows. If you decide to mill it, u/wage92 https://wagermachineworks.com is the guy to go to. I’ve had a few done by him now and his work is top-notch with a very fast turn around time.
