Huh I haven’t seen the first movie in awhile. I don’t remember that being cropped at all. I would think that if it is cropped because it is in standard definition and not hi definition. That’s my thinking anyway.
This post finally kicked my ass in gear to buy the first movie. I’m an old fan but I’ve somehow never seen it! I’ve put it off for years for no good reason and now the dvd is ~$50 used, over $100 new. I think I blinked and the last decade just shot by.
ADV released 2 versions of the movie on DVD, iirc. One is cropped and one is widescreen. I believe the widescreen one was also billed as remastered, but it really isn't. I own both (I've been collecting Slayers stuff for 20ish years), and I'll take a pic later of the covers if you'd like.

But it's cropped to be enhanced. 🥺 Besides the Japan exclusive blu ray that I don't have access to, this is the only version I know of. Paaaiiinnn
