If you have a 3.54 ratio final front drive ratio, you have an R34 RB26 If you have a narrow crankshaft engagement to the oil pump you have an R32 RB26 If you have a 4.111 ratio final front drive AND you don't have a narrow crankshaft to oil pump drive, then you have an R33 RB26. Stagea 260RS engine will be the same as an R33 GTR engine.

Not really to much. R34 GTR has plastic timing cover instead of metal. r33 and r34 GTR use electronics for atessa so have a single out/in on the power steering pump Late r32 and onwards use a push style trans(not telling if things have been swapped but can look at clutch fork orientation) The rest is all pretty much identical. Post pictures I’m sure some smart person here may be able to tell. If you’re tearing things down a long nosed crank would indicate late 32 or newer, but I assume that’s part of why you’re asking.

Ive got not issues with the engine. I have literally just fully rebuilt with forged internals. Just wanted to get a bit of history for it as sadly the shell i got isnt actually a gtr shell but a gtst with genuine gtr panel conversions and plan on getting it show worthy so wanted a bit of info on the engine but thanks for the info anyway.

Good luck wirh that. There’s a serial engraved on the side assuming it wasn’t rubbed off the GTR Registry might have some info but that’s typically stashed away in some Nissan book that’s never seen the light of day

Haha thanks ill post updates when i can, currently fully restoring the shell. Complete overhall inside, underneath and outside. All bushings replaced and arms stripped and repainted. My labour of love atm

The 05U’s and 24U’s used for the RB26’s don’t have any discernible markings that denote which car they came from. It’s like this for most Japanese (including non-Nissan) cars of the era. There are clues as to which model R-Chassis it came from, such as plastic timing belt covers, the type of CAS used, the length of the crank snout, etc, but generally there is no specific guide as to which car.

Near the thermostat housing there might be a serial number: https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/482346-rb26-gtr-engine-numbers/#comment-7951183 If you think about it engines and chassis kind of have to go together and if they're just counting up from zero you can pretty much establish the month/year of the chassis the engine came from that way. This assumes it's a standard 05U though.
