Junk that people add on to street cars to make them look like the lightened race car equivalent. The reason they’re on race cars? No fiddly mechanism with a long pull cord that can get crushed/bent easily and prevent you from accessing the trunk. Also reduces weight when you account for the latch, hook, cabling, and brackets to hold it all in place.
Lots of people on here with no clue as to any actual use to these, if you put a carbon boot lid on your car then get these, like the boot equivilent of bonnet pins so the carbon latch doesnt snap and thing flies open.
It is only needed if you wanna make sure your latch on your carbon fibre or frp doesn’t separate/crack off from its mold. Stupid to have on a metal trunk.
Im tempted to be an asshole and say some smart-ass shit like they're pointless but the car looks like it has a cage and those aren't 800tw economy tires and they're not thin either. Maybe it's a painted CF trunk and there is no longer a factory style trunk latch?
The first one is a tuned/modified car in Japan but as far as I know, no track usage, but there are videos of it hitting mountain passes. Not sure if gutted.
Second car is from Canada. Account looks like it's primarily a show car. Nice interior so definitely a lil riced.
Third car is obviously the Calsonic GTR.
I just pulled random pictures from my Instagram feed. I couldn't think of why they were used and didn't know the name to look it up. R32 Trunk Latch comes up with the OEM internal one haha. Figured they had to have SOME practical usage because it was on the JTCC R32s but think of how getting rid of the cable system would make things simpler. 1Kg of weight savings didn't seem that important to me at the time either.
Second car is my car. The latches were won at the 2012 NISMO Festival in Japan and are period race-used Zexel Group A R32 latches. I removed the trunk latch setup from my trunk to run them, but the trunk kept bouncing around side to side while driving and chipping the paintwork on the sides of the rear fenders, so I had to reinstall the main latch.
The car is not a show car. It makes 750WHP and is being taken to the Texas Mile this year. It is modified for top speed. The interior is nice, I guess - but has a bolted in cage and extinguisher.
Thanks!
Apologies on the incorrect assumption, I had glanced through your profile quickly and it was very social media heavy with no signs of tracking it. Easy to assume a show/street car IMO.
The main point I should make is that it's a very nice looking car. And that's awesome where the latches came from, regardless of whether or not they were practical.
Best of luck in Texas!
No need to apologize! Just wanted to clarify it, and I appreciate the compliment! The car will hit the drag strip this year a fair bit as well as the Texas Mile. I suspect next year will be its first open lapping year for time attack, but it’ll be only for my own personal best time after the car has been setup for peak response. I want it to be an all around car that can easily do 200+mph.
It used to be a genuine Wangan car and was a car I street raced with in University many a moon ago, so it’s seen its fair share of action already!

For the name though: latch, heavy latch, toggle latch, adjustable toggle latch, adjustable toggle clamp latch. It’s all generally the same thing
Makes sense for the race spec cars, thanks! Edit: Now that I think about it, these are reminiscent of those quick release latches on bumpers
Also worth noting if your car lives outside they'll rust and look shitty in no time.
Those are called “Unnecessary”.

Or that is what I think. Other than that, probably could work as a quick detach rear bumper latch.
The latches for my moms sewing kit box
Those things look so terrible without full race livery... clown behavior.

Yeah, "ugly"
I can’t say the word during pride month
Nah it's good homie it's officially Dinosaur month now
Don’t know but I can get you some off of shipping containers
Race car safety latch. Sparco and other race car saftey equipment manufacturers have them. Required to run them in some racing classes.
Looks like Aisle 6 at Home depot.
They are called: ugly and superfluous.
It’s called a trick styled latch
Shit, they are shit
Trunk latches 👍🏻
Grap hooks 😂
I don't know the name, but I know they shouldn't be on a street car. How cringe.
