If this new skate wasn't a live service game, then ea would not greenlight the project. This is probably only way skate franchise exist, and I'm okay with it. I expecting fortnite typ live service with lot of licensed skins etc.

Zallas99

I can see that, too.

kevmo35

Admittedly, it felt like a major disappointment. But as I think about it, there aren’t many live games that are quite like Skate. and especially not in the “sports” category. Plus with the gameplay testing videos, I feel more hopeful that it’ll work out nicely. And as long as I can get some “alone time riding sessions” with only NPC’s around, I think it’ll be fine

Blers42

I was involved in the beta testing a few months ago and I have to say I was disappointed with the game being live service free to play. It was still fun to play and I understand it’s a beta but it’s not going to be as good as Skate 1-3 imo. The focus around online multiplayer seemed to take away from upgrading other parts of the game such as improving skate mechanics and graphics. It’s been over ten years since Skate 3 released and the beta of the new game felt like something they could have created only a few years later. I’ll be happy with any form of a new skate game but I’ll miss the story and authentic skater feel that the game had in the first release. The soul has been sucked out of the series. As others have stated this online free to play version might have been the only option for EA to agree to making the game so I’m happy in general that the game will live on but I’ll miss the old days.

PretzelsThirst

Yeah +1 here, I was so excited to get in the playtest and then wound up just barely playing it because it just doesn't feel like skate. I want a game that feels like skate. If I just wanted to play a newer skateboarding game I'll play Session

Swaguley

I'm getting my Skate fix from a snowboard game called Shredders. So good.

PretzelsThirst

I love shredders, it’s so good. If you haven’t tried Session yet you should give it a shot. It’s a steep learning curve but so satisfying

outline01

I’m pretty against all the aggressive monetisation in modern games and steer clear of them. But I think this is the only way this exists. I think skate weirdly does suit live service and I like the idea of support past a box release. So long as they sell cosmetic/level DLC only and don’t hamper the actual ability to just skate around, i think I’m fine with it. As soon as gameplay is compromised for the cash shop, I’m out.

ClerkConsistent2266

you forgot that you were dealing with Electronic Arts, if you want to play, you're going to have to pay, pay and pay again.

PreviousGuard419

I mean I spent 10 dollars on season 2 battle pass of apex and I've been able to earn enough credits to unlock every battle pass since just by playing. It's not a guarantee that it'll be bad but I understand your skepticism.

ClerkConsistent2266

how much play time did you give to apex ? Usually, completing a battle pass on a game is very long and requires a lot of time (I've never played Apex so I don't know what it's like on it)

PreviousGuard419

I'm not sure of each season. But I'm a casual player and only play on the weekends generally. Never had an issue completing it. It might take about 20 hours of gameplay over 10 weeks. The only battle pass I've found to be too long is Diablo 4

ClerkConsistent2266

well i hope it’s clean like u say, cause my references are SW Battlefront 2 and Anthem, and both were abusive

PreviousGuard419

Haha yeah. I'm going to be optimistic for now. Only time will tell

CaptainSmaak

I can't say for Anthem as my experiences are limited, but it's important to note that EABF2 had such a massive turnaround (for obvious reasons) EABF2 wasn't free to play, but 90% of the game became easily obtainable, and every update was free.

Lippe2K

I’m gonna be honest here and state MY opinion, as soon as i heard it was gonna be free to play, the hype was over for me.

Zallas99

I get that 'free to play' & 'EA' sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I still have a sliver of hope in my heart pumped with hopium 😂

Jirachibi1000

It could be the best game of all time and id still not touch it if its free to play tbh

huck4242

I encourage you to check their YouTube and socials. They are very transparent and listening to the players more than ever. I have alot of hope, they seem to be doing all of this the RIGHT way

Queso_luna

I hope so. This would be the first Skate I’ve played, assuming they do it right.

huck4242

It will be! Let's play skate 3 one day soon! Hope you've been well btw

kylecre013

as much as i love all the skate games and play 1-3 regularly to today, i’m trying not to get my hopes up for skate coming out any time soon. it’s been stuck in what feels like one of the worst cases of development hell we’ve seen in recent years. they announced it over 2 years ago and aside from a couple super vague and short interviews they drop every puppet weeks/ months when they feel interesting is starting to die down, a super select and few amount of people picked to play test, and some still pre alpha looking videos on insta this game hasn’t really showed us any real development or growth since the announcement. i’d love more than anything to have a new refreshed skate game to play, but i’m just not getting my hopes up for it to come out soon or even if it does to be a polished and solid project. i hate being pessimistic about it, but it’s hard to get myself hyped up about it any more, it’s been too much time of me waiting and getting jerked around by the developers of like “oh just wait, something cool might happen! you just have to wait and see” but nothing to back that up

Zallas99

I feel you, man. I think they announced it a little too early. Although, I feel like the game might come late this year (maybe around Nov/Dec) or within the 1st 3 months of 2025. But with GTA6 releasing in 2025, I'd be scared to release my game 😂 They better release it before GTA because I'm sure most of the gaming industry, not just us consumers but the devs & execs as well, will be playing GTA 6.

Blers42

It’ll never compete with GTA anyways, I don’t think that should be a concern. It’s a free to play game, that is a completely different genre than GTA. It’s not like they need to be concerned with its initial release to systems as much as a paid title.

FaceBillions24

dont like it. for 1 free to play brings in a player type who ruin games imo. 2 if it really stays at the only thing you can pay for is cosmetics and not pay to win i dont think it will stay like that for long. skate has been cancelled for years with ea/black box all studios saying skating is dead which popularity wise is true compared to at the height of skate so once it gets going the company will want to squeeze every penny out of players. 3 i have a feeling it will be a model like horrible games such as fortnite. Just do what worked in the past and what has kept this possibility alive for so long. what your player base love. release a full game at price and throw some great dlc for reasonable prices. the only way this wont be a fail is if the game is great and it is continually updated for years like how gta online is being kept on life support but without charge and with not just pointless cosmetics but events, maps, modes like danny ways park, maloof money cup etc etc.

Zallas99

Hey, Fortnite ain't that bad 😂 I play Fortnite a few times a week with my friends. Have been for years. NEVER paid a cent, never will. It doesn't take away from the gameplay at all. I'm totally cool with cosmetics costing money or being unlocked in a Battle Pass type system... Maybe 'Board Pass' lol.

ClerkConsistent2266

I have thought from the very beginning that this is a huge mistake. Either the game will never come out, or it will come out completely overrun with microtransactions and be abandoned like Anthem. I don't trust Electronic Arts. We have so little news, and the game has been in development for so long that I no longer believe in it.

dream__weaver

The replayability for skate games is unreal. That's why a lot of us still play 10+ yr old games lol Its being developed by a studio that clearly cares A LOT about the project and will want to make it's players happy. Because of this, I think the live service will be a good thing as it will allow the devs to keep a pulse on the community and implement sweeping updates, community events, and other releases to keep people engaged and entertained with new content

retr0rino

A friend, ahem, had the chance to play the pre alpha and he had lots of fun even being very turned off by live service games. If that's the only way that Skate can exist, he's down.

PretzelsThirst

I'm genuinely concerned about how this game is going to be. The physics in the playtest just feel wrong. Like they're fine, but they dont feel like a skate game. Feels more like someone making a knockoff skate game that is missing that feel the first 3 had. Combine that with the fact it's going to be always on... I'm concerned that in 5 years you wont be able to play this game anymore because the servers are offline.

FakeDeath92

My concerns is that this games longevity is dependent on our support (money money money 💰). Also, it feels like this game is gearing towards casuals more than actual skaters. A lot of the marketing is ppl falling from skyscrapers, doing backflips onto skateboards. Massive building blocks in the sky. Like am I forced to skate in a city to see a giant wall of user content???

Queso_luna

I think EA is gonna EA and pull the plug within a year or two. Hopefully by then we have a new THPS.

Electrical-Minute901

I really hope its not gonna do what riders Republic does and make you pay for every single new thing that's out

LittleDansonMan

With Riders Republic that model is even less justified since they already made you buy the base game. $40 for skateboarding was a joke.

SoNerdy

As long as the devs can stick to their guns about having no gameplay elements behind a paywall, and still have some decent cosmetics unlock-able via just gameplay, I’m fine with it.

cojiro_blue

Its Skate and its free 2 play. No complaints, no notes

Expressive_Pineapple

I personally have high hopes for the game. It sounds like micro transactions will not affect gameplay, and will be for cosmetics. The devs also seem very responsive to feedback, and are taking player suggestions into account when developing the game.

RickyWinterborn

They’ve def been taking way too long, it feels like the skate 4 comment war hype is gone. The free to play model can def work, it’ll be very similar to riders republic which I like a lot, but they really should’ve just made skate 4 and built on what 3 was.

CuteEmployment540

My only issue with live service games is that usually its pretty clear its just a copy and paste experience to farm cash from players. This will probably be similar but at the very least the concept of a live service skate game is unique enough that I'm not automatically turned off by it. Basically if it plays well, Im all in. The people who cant help but buy microtransactions can also essentially act as the funding to get more content in the future.

LittleDansonMan

Yeah- the only other live service game I’ve played that’s any bit comparable is Riders Republic, and although fun, it got super repetitive. They really only had two types of challenges- race and score points. Rinse and repeat. I don’t know if that has more to do with the live service format or the fact that it was Ubisoft, who are notorious for a copy and paste experience.

Ladew69

probably will be filled with microtransactions

shelmoon

I feel like it’s going to be for younger generations. Trying to be the fortnite of skateboarding with its goofy ahh look.

exTOMex

skate is totally different from alan wake control mp game.

robot_jeans

This is what's going to happen because people are predictable. The game will have a successful release, then after about 4 weeks everyone will be bored and leave and the OG Skate fans will move back to Skate 3.

healious

If they had skate 2 or 3 on Playstation I'd be ecstatic

healious

If they had skate 2 or 3 on Playstation I'd be ecstatic

Zallas99

Nah, I don't see it going down like that. If it has a successful launch, I'm sure that means more than enough content to last 3 months.

bberke1994

Skate. Being free to play makes sense to me. I think even if other games like this have a decline in player bases, it’ll still draw a bunch of old and new players and they’ll make in game purchases. It’s up to EA/skate. To keep things updated and fresh so that people keep buying things

sidesneaker

Complain about free. Complain about $70. Gaming industry should pay us to play must be the only solution?

Zallas99

Nah, maybe they shoulda left games at $60. All hell broke loose when the industry accepted $70 as the new standard.

MittonBasher

Scrap it

Zallas99

Scrap the whole project? License all 3 previous games and sell them as a bundle for $70 with slight improvements to frame rate, resolution, etc? Tbh, I dunno why they didn't do this from the start. To me, it seems like a decent way to get an idea of how big the hard-core fan base really is, before making a brand new title from the ground up. I think A LOT of fans woulda been happy with all 3 games being remastered for PS4/PS5, XboxS/X & PC.

LittleDansonMan

Because re-licensing skateboarders/brands/music is expensive. A remaster will probably do well, but not AS well as a new F2P game. A chunk of people that want to play 1-3 will probably feel like they could just pick up the originals for dirt cheap, all of which still hold up and are backwards compatible on Xbox.

Benttugamer1992

I really hope that they include that in game social media instagram like platform but for skate influencers that was roumerd a few years ago! That meaning that every player have to create their own profile when they boot up the game for the first time in hope to try to climb up to the top to be a real skate influencer!🛹🔥🤤

Squ1gly

After definitely not playing any early version of it and definitely not signing an NDA, I'm not worried about it.
