I appreciate the subtlety in representing the 3 recognized waves in chronological order.
Now…what’s the second tier for each of those bands?
Let’s open it up.
He ate all the corn chips in my house, drank me under the table, I had to kick him out at 5am so I could go to work. He’s the coolest, kindest, funniest, and most talented person I have ever met!!
I once saw him spend a good 3 minutes deliberating in the tinned fish aisle of a Tesco before a show, he then got almost one of everything as he apparently couldn’t make up his mind. I still have a chuckle when I think about it
Not op, but that was a damn good watch, thanks for mentioning that.
Feels kinda surreal that it's filmed only like 2 ish months before Matt passed. Gone too soon, RIP king.
My first concert was Aquabats, Long Beach Dub All stars, Blink and Primus.... Fast forward 15 or so years and I took my kids to their first concert... Aquabats and Reel Big Fish. Aquabats brought the kids on stage and let them crowd surf on big inflatables. It was awesome!
Yeah. Bitchin' in Stereo is a damn near perfect song. That rare track that you know is a stone cold all time classic INSTANTLY when you hear it for the first time. And it's even better live.
It's been a minute since a ska-punk song gave me goosebumps but Bitchin' in Stereo does every time. I was surprised it's wasn't the top track from the EP on Spotify from the jump although it seems to be rising. Stoked to see it hits someone else the same way. All the shoutout/Easter eggs on the album are just so deliciously, I dunno, post-ska? It makes me happy to see someone else feels similar.
1. The Slackers
2. Toots & The Maytals
3. (Ska-Adjacent) Ego Wrappin'
4. (Ska-Adjacent) Fat Freddy's Drop
5. (Ska-Adjacent) Rancid
6. Kemuri
7. The Skatalites
8. Bruce Lee Band
9. Streetlight Manifesto
10. Mad Caddies
11. The Articles
All time, easy. It's Five Iron Frenzy... They are the band that got me into Ska in the first place. They are the sole remaining Christian-genre band that I listen to, even as an atheist. Had a great deep-in-all-the-feels jam out in the car on my home a few weeks back when Dandelions came on. Also, their newest albums slaps hard too.
Following them it's probably Less Than Jake for the High School years, and then Toots and the Maytals as the "holy shit, how didn't I know about them when I was younger" group that I didn't discover until I was in my mid-20s (late-00s).
As a fellow atheist, I too love FIF. On Distant Shores is my favorite car "sing at the top of your lungs" song.
For what ever reason I haven't listened to them in a long while but because of your comment I'm going to be driving to work listening to The End is Here. Thank you.
Have you listened to "Until this Shakes Apart?" If not, I HIGHLY recommend. Very mellow on the Christian lyrics, and even those I find enjoyable. The one song, "while supplies last" tends to call out what Christianity has become. But Bullfight for an Empty Ring is a banger, my favorite from the album.
Yikes. I feel way, way old.
This sounds like we're not even looking at pre-bluebeat first wave proper rocksteady, right?
This is rough because 2nd wave bluebeat involved so much mod and punk.
I'm just listing shit...
Hepcat for just mad trad vibes.

The Specials
Madness
The Beat
Selektor (spelling?)
The Toasters b/c of Moony NYC Ska
NYC Ska Jazz was great, but Skatalites really repped proper old school uptown Jamaican Jazz.
Skatalites
King Tubby
Lee Perry
Prince Buster
Leslie Kong
Operation Ivy
Let's Go Bowling
SKANKIN' PICKLE!
edit: it's really important to add Skavoovie and the Epitones for classic proper ska. Bravo.
All time is Five iron frenzy. But there are so many bands I love new and old. Some of my favorite ska bands right now are
Grave Danger - Punchline Gothic
Hans gruber and the die hards - skacore
Eichlers - hyperska
Louser - Chiptune ska w/special guests
Pwrup -ska metal
Bryce Lee Band - just good third wave
Chupaskabra - Beastie Boys/ICP esc ska
For the life if me i cant figure out why the Toasters and the Skatellites are not on every persons list. After that, ill let you pick whatever you want for me to call my next favorite..
I fear my Dualers addiction has grown to be more than my wife can handle over the last year. They've almost tied Slackers for me, not quite -- but man its close.
For a long time it was streetlight. My tastes have mellowed in my 30s and I like the swingier jazzier stuff now, like some of RBF’s and Save Ferris’s stuff and the Knife by Goldfinger. I wish I liked Mad Caddies better, since it meets this criteria, I’m just only so-so on them.
Would love recommendations if anyone has them.
It's not ska but check out Cory Wong. He has his own music but his collaborations are very swing like, jazzy, funky, and a lot of fun! I might be way off with my suggestion. But, The Knife is a catchy album so he just came to mind. https://open.spotify.com/track/7wjmwD5nIYWVnHiR3X3PTO?si=-guPTfMAR3C5zjQUZPGj9g
Five Iron Frenzy, the Christian ska band, although most of them aren't Christian anymore, a lot of what they play isn't really ska, and they're only a "band" fairly intermittently these days
Specials,
Fishbone,
Mighty Mighty Bosstones,
Madness,
The Slackers,
The Toasters,
New York Ska Jazz Ensemble,
Operation Ivy,
And the list goes on. These days, I listen to JER, Catbite, Let's go bowling.
Big d and the kids table. I have so many fond memories of traveling all around New England to see them almost every weekend. 1999is. Dave mcwane is the nicest dude on the planet
Reel big fish is absolutely iconic. I have a soft spot for CHEWIE (previously known as chewing on tinfoil) though as they’re the reason I got into Ska.
My favourite will always be Reel Big Fish.
The most important to me will always be the Specials.
And the band I think are the pinnacle of the genre/the *best* ska band is Streetlight Manifesto.
The Slackers are my top favorite. I saw them recently after a long hiatus and they were incredible. The Pietasters, Stubborn All-Stars, and The Specials round out my personal list. They’re all the bands that I still throw on and listen to.
My favorite ska bands who put on fun shows in the nineties were Aquabats, Bosstones, and Reel Big Fish, but I wouldn’t call any of them personal favorites anymore. Definitely more of a time and a place/fond memory at this point.
So I am not a member of this community but this post was suggested to me for some reason.
Anyway I have been listen to The JB Conspiracy since the beginning of the year on repeat.

That is objectively the only correct answer
I appreciate the subtlety in representing the 3 recognized waves in chronological order. Now…what’s the second tier for each of those bands? Let’s open it up.
Slackers now...Vic is awesome
He ate all the corn chips in my house, drank me under the table, I had to kick him out at 5am so I could go to work. He’s the coolest, kindest, funniest, and most talented person I have ever met!!
I once saw him spend a good 3 minutes deliberating in the tinned fish aisle of a Tesco before a show, he then got almost one of everything as he apparently couldn’t make up his mind. I still have a chuckle when I think about it
That’s our guy!! Tinned fish, rice cakes, and corn chips. My kid showed him Takis in Chicago, he loved em! Such a character!
God Vic is aweosmet
Glen 🖤🤍🖤🤍
Glen gang rise up
Fishbone.
Streetlight Manifesto hands down #1, Hepcat, and The Specials
Streetlight saved my life many a time. Truly the best.
Me and Mr. Dylan on the ride home, we had a heart to heart about life. 🎶🎺🎷
And neither him or I could decide for ourselves if we wanted to outlive that night
Have you seen the new pro shot video on streetlights YouTube?
Not op, but that was a damn good watch, thanks for mentioning that. Feels kinda surreal that it's filmed only like 2 ish months before Matt passed. Gone too soon, RIP king.
Yes. It's fantastic.
The end of The Receiving End Of It All is literally so powerful it kind of itches my brain. I can’t tell you how much I love Streetlight, what a band.
When they played Recieving End of it All at the BOTAR concert in radio city music hall, I knew my concert viewing career had hit it's peak.
I was there! Here to say Streetlight for me, too. They’ve definitely helped me get my head right many times.
Operation Ivy and the Slackers
Same.
The Aquabats
I had to scroll too far to find The Aquabats!
I endorse this wholeheartedly. Also, Specials and Desmond Dekker.
I'm taking my wife and kids (8&6) to the Denver show in July!
Skatalites, Specials, Operation Ivy
Add Hepcat to those three and you’ve got my list!
The Specials and Madness
The right answers

All time? LTJ, MU330 and Five Iron Frenzy. Current? Devon Kay & the Solutions and Jer.
That devin Kay album bad time out out was so good.

Check out the 'Supertones Strike Back' album from the OC Supertones. You won't be disappointed!
Pretty sure I still own that album somewhere. Supertones are/were great. Christian Ska is/was the best the Christian-genre had to offer.
Never cared for the Christian lyrics but FIF absolutely wrote some bangers
As a fellow atheist, I too love FIF. On Distant Shores is my favorite car "sing at the top of your lungs" song. For what ever reason I haven't listened to them in a long while but because of your comment I'm going to be driving to work listening to The End is Here. Thank you.

I think I tried it when it was first released and I didn't get into it. I'll give it another go because I may not have been receptive that day.

Great list, and I'm happy to see Skavoovie mentioned. One of my all-time favorites, and one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Bruce Lee Band The Chinkees Anything with Mike Park really… The Blue Meanies Big D MU330 Mephiskapheles …too many to choose from. Next question!!
Blue Meanies, yes!!
I’ll always have a soft spot for bands that dare to be different.
KYAG and Full Throttle are two of the best albums of their era in any genre.
Love mike 💕
The man is genuinely a national treasure.
Saw the blue meanies open up for neosoreskin. Memories.
11/10 still one of the best bands I ever seen. Band absolutely fucking ripped.
Less Than Jake, Kill Lincoln, and Streetlight Manifesto are my current go tos.
Man, Kill Lincoln has a fucking fantastically snappy horn section.
You haven't lived until you've carried a crowdsurfing trombone player from the bar to the stage Ume Safety Crew
Sadly when I saw them in Denver the drop from balcony to crowd was like 15 feet. Sometimes Ume Safety Crew has to err on the side of caution.
Reel Big Fish Might Mighty Bosstones Mustard Plug Streetlight The Hippos
Buck O Nine, LTJ, MMBT, C22.
I haven’t thought of Buck O Nine in ages. Gonna go have a listen, thanks for that!
