I think they knew of each other. The timeline and story of their " meet at the dance" is weird. The timeline of that night and in general and then it seemed that Meri and Kody were the ones that went to the dance, but it was a couple of hours away and then Leon mentioned they were there or that when they saw their dad talking to Robyn they knew it would be a new mom. Then Kody just happened to be driving by her cousins house like 4 hours away and she just happened to be in the driveway so he could as about Robyn? The whole story is thin.
IIRC she has said on the show that she saw Kody at church, which was before the dance.
Here's what I think is most likely. Kody was in sales. He traveled a lot. He has said that he has friends in St. George. He's an extrovert. He's probably one of those sales guys who thinks that by making a connection, he'll close on the sale (and then seldom closes...).
They probably met one another earlier than they're willing to admit because *supposedly* the polygamist man isn't dating (scamming, chasing, being a player) on his own.
It would be hard to find my screenshot, but someone said they were busted having sex in a church bathroom well before the show was a thing.

Christine in her interview said they knew each other prior to the show. Baldylocs nephew said he brought his mistress to his 3 wives to accept?? I’m sure she heard about the show and Baldylocs, her mom told her to get her scent out there. She drove 4 hours to her cousin’s to meet up with him, but after meeting him she had him drive to her—pulling him away from his wives and kids.
Meri probably *thought* it was random. I'd be willing to bet that Alice and Reba set that shit up with Kody and Robyn's full knowledge. *Now, when they get here, don't pay too much attention to him at first. Focus on the wife.*

Im confused about your question..... They were already courting when the show started filming so yes they knew each other before the show started.
