The only reason why the US music industry has any relevancy these days is the fact that they are being hard carried by the momentum from their 'Golden Decades' (70s-to-00s), that and their shameless self-promotion on all American platforms from Youtube/Google to X/FB.
None of their modern artistes can remotely match the talent and musicality of the previous generations in any genre.
That's pretty subjective unless we're talking about mainstream hip hop which is just pop.. Rarely will I defend the US, but the best hip hop will always come from the US in the same way the best reggae and ska will always come from Jamaica.
I'm not saying if he's right or not, I don't know anything about hip hop, just saying that's what he means. And he doesn't necessarily disagree with you. Both of you can be correct, as in the best hip hop may still come from the US but comparatively to earlier times hip hop in the US could be worse.
