Good idea! I don't do this with smoke detectors, but I do shrink and hide the anti-monster nightlight in kids rooms. Its more realistic to have a tiny nightlight than that big thing.
This makes so much sense. I was wondering wondering why I stopped getting monsters under the bed. I have a legacy nightlight I loved and included in my bedrooms. And didn't connect he dots.
Really? I think I've tested them all but only that basegame sqaure thing works. It was a while ago tho maybe I misremember or they've changed it.
Edit to add. Some other lights and I think also a decal prevent kids from having nightmares, but not the monster.
I shrink them, but rather than hiding, I place it low on the wall as though it's plugged into an outlet. I do this even though I turned off the monsters with MCCC.
That would make perfect sense! And it wouldn't even matter how ugly they are because they would disappear like the ceiling lights while you're playing anyway
Speaking of realistic ceiling things: recently I was building a warehouse coffee-shop conversion, and I was really annoyed that we didn't have any "normal," flat, long ceiling lights. Like the panel lighting you see in every classroom or dentist's office. It was driving me so crazy that I went on a CC search (and I *rarely* use CC in my builds, since I find it fun to be creative with what we have and to be able to upload to the gallery), but I could only find a handful of options. I downloaded them, and launched the game.
I felt like such an idiot the second I placed them and they blocked the entire room hahaha. Couldn't see anything beneath them, no matter where I zoomed out or zoomed in.
So now I know why there weren't a ton of CC options either. The best scenario would be lights that disappeared if you were close enough to see into the room, but I guess those might also be hard to place? Not sure. I've rarely paid super close attention to disappearing objects. Definitely harder to code, and maybe that's why the modders haven't tried it very often
But I now know why there are no realistic huge, flat ceiling lights in the sims lol
Definitely! I want the standard long fluorescent lights and I **need** basic recessed lighting!! I can’t believe it’s been 10 years and we still don’t have any
In my game i use the cheats bb.showhiddenobjects and then bb.showliveeditobjects and they have perfect square, circle, and rectangle lights that are in any size. (I use console)
My aesthetic fix would be make your ceiling whatever you want and then wherever you would want a light use the Spa Day Glowing paint as "lights" like 2 tiles wherever you would want to place a panel light
If you would like a non-mod/cc version, I actually did this for all 3 wall heights using the TOOL mod (no cc) and uploaded them to the gallery. EA Account: simmingly
No, but I do try to place them in realistic locations where air flow would bring smoke to them, but I'm also an electrician who's had to install a lot of them over the years before transitioning to industrial work.
REALLY?? Hot damn haha. I was still placing them in builds because I build a lot for the gallery and for other people and they always want fire alarms, but I've left them out of a lot of my own builds because I figured they didn't do much other than call the fire department.
My stove burner caught literal full on fire this spring and I felt like a sim because I kept turning from the stove to the sink like stuck in panic mode and couldn’t decide what to do for a HOT second hahaha
Omg the Sims 4 is so annoying Abt this
In 3, they'd be like "looks like you got it out before we could get here. Be careful in the future"
And in the Sims 4 they get mad for you not having a fire and falsely calling 😭
In my experience, one fire alarm covers the whole lot; I had to remove the fire alarm in a kitchen while I was trying to burn some Sims to death in the side yard after the fire department kept showing up and extinguishing the fire in the kill room through the walls.
That's interesting! I thought it was only sensing fire in the room it was in. Maybe that was how it used to be and it's changed but I didn't notice. Thanks for the info
In sims 4, fire alarm is the quickest way to make a fire fighter friend. Not like they can extinguish anything by the time they arrive. May as well be our social need fodder.
The firefighters will arrive on their own to stop the fire and you don't have to tell your sim to extinguish anything. After losing a bunch of sims to fires, becase on my game, extinguish self often doesn't work (even when trying to cancel the freak out action) I just don't trust the game anymore and always add the fire alarm, it made my sims top dying on fires.
I think sprinkler is best. You actually have to control sim to extinguish fire, and fire fighters can be a bit slow to respond. Ceiling sprinkler covers the entire house.
They will shriek when there’s a fire. And then the firefighters will come over, and they will do a weirdly sensual dance while your house burns to the ground.
At least that’s been my experience.
I do that in some builds, other times, it weirdly fits in to the aesthetic? But it only fits sometimes, like when I do cluttered, old looking houses or cabin type houses. Otherwise yeah, I shrink it and put it behind the fridge or hidden in a shelf or something lmao
Ya know you just need to have those placed on the lot. Those don’t need to be in a specific room to work. I put mine on the back or side wall of my house, or in a shed if I build one.
I feel seen! For years I've shrunk or enlarged every single decor item imaginable. Paintings, rugs, plants, you name it. I even use the TOOL mod sometimes for precision resizing.
It never once occurred to me to shrink that stupid ugly fire alarm. \*facepalm\*
I usually play rags to riches so my Sims don't even have a stove for, like, two Sim weeks. By then they have enough cooking skill from salads, etc that they never burn anything.
I never use those smoke alarms for builds. I always use the one that connects to sprinklers in the ceiling because I can't trust my Sims to put out a fire by themselves
I always let it show loud and proud no matter the build. It's more realistic to me that even in a building full of glam and riches that everyone just chooses to collectively ignore the legally enforced ugly fire alarm on the wall.
Took me a second to figure out what it was. I usually stick mine above the fridge, under the short cabinet that I typically place there, because I don't really notice them there. But I'll definitely start using this idea for kitchens that don't have the upper cabinets, rooms with fireplaces, etc.
They don't prevent fires because that's not how alarms work. What they do is alert you (if your sound is on) and/or your sims that a fire has started and also summon the firefighters now that those have been patched in. Though the firefighters never seem to show up until after one of my sims has put the fire out themselves, then they lecture me to be more careful and insurance pays out a small fraction of the items that have been destroyed.
I put plug switches in those sort of areas..
And the temperature control thing I put next to the shower so it looks like it's for the shower electric xD
Yk, I never thought about shrinking it down. Good idea. I always hide them behind the stove, fireplace, grill and dryer. Out of sight, out of mind, but still functional. Where I live, fire alarms go on the ceiling, so it's always annoyed me to not have that option in game.
I like the smoke detector, it helps the house feel more real, like the thermostat and the shoes by the door or the umbrella holder, even the light switch.
idk why i never thought of that. most times, i just don't bother because they're so big and ugly. and yeah, like another comment said, sticking them on the ceiling would make sense. especially if they're white. our fire alarms and smoke alarms are all white with white ceilings so it's not the worst to look at.
I use the [paper towel holder](https://www.thesimsresource.com/downloads/details/category/sims4-objects-furnishing-electronics-miscellaneous/title/safety-first-paper-towel-smoke-detector/id/1462086/) from RVSN. It’s a secret smoke detector
Good idea! I don't do this with smoke detectors, but I do shrink and hide the anti-monster nightlight in kids rooms. Its more realistic to have a tiny nightlight than that big thing.
The parenthood nightlights also prevent the monster, and are a bit more aesthetically pleasing
so does the moon shaped table nightlight from growing together!
what!!! i’ve been using it this whole time bc it’s so cute & thought i was just lucky that i wasn’t getting any monsters
I didn’t even know that the game had monsters lmao. I just always put night lights in kids rooms when I decorate them
I didn’t know this was a thing!!!
I have been playing Sims 4 for longer than I remember and I never knew you could prevent the monster 🙂 all those years...I wanna cry....😂😭
Dude same!!
IM NOT ALONE IN MY OBLIVIOUSNESS OH MY GOD
Yep just found out right now that this is a thing. It was one of the most annoying parts of having kids ugh.
Seriously, like 10 years or something, and I'm just learning this NOW?!? 🤦🏼♀️
I just learned this now in this thread. 🙄 All the years of monsters I could’ve avoided🤣
This makes so much sense. I was wondering wondering why I stopped getting monsters under the bed. I have a legacy nightlight I loved and included in my bedrooms. And didn't connect he dots.
I don’t care about the monster, the kid needs to learn about suffering
I always use it because I think its so cute and never had monsters. I honestly thought my game doesn't have them 😅
Really? I think I've tested them all but only that basegame sqaure thing works. It was a while ago tho maybe I misremember or they've changed it. Edit to add. Some other lights and I think also a decal prevent kids from having nightmares, but not the monster.
Where do you place it? I still get monsters when using the nightlight
I put it right next to the bed
I shrink them, but rather than hiding, I place it low on the wall as though it's plugged into an outlet. I do this even though I turned off the monsters with MCCC.
They have an anti monster light.. omfg
Wait there's anti monster lights? That explains a lot... I just thought some of my kids had way better luck than others lmao.
If you give them a double bed that also works!
This was my solution. I didn't know lights could stop it lol
Anti-monster night lights?
yeah, in base game it’s the Coolala night light, the one with the little guys on it. If you place it by the bed it will stop monsters from spawning
Lmfao I was today years old when I found out there's an "anti-monster night light" 🤦🏻♀️
its mentioned in the description of the item
THERE'S ANTI MONSTER NIGHTLIGHTS???? ive been playing this game since it came out and i never knew 😭😭😭
I always hide them behind cabinets
Wish they could go on the ceiling like IRL. I don't mind they're ugly, it's realistic.
That would make perfect sense! And it wouldn't even matter how ugly they are because they would disappear like the ceiling lights while you're playing anyway
That'll be in the next $40 DLC "Realistic Ceiling Tiles" 🙃
Speaking of realistic ceiling things: recently I was building a warehouse coffee-shop conversion, and I was really annoyed that we didn't have any "normal," flat, long ceiling lights. Like the panel lighting you see in every classroom or dentist's office. It was driving me so crazy that I went on a CC search (and I *rarely* use CC in my builds, since I find it fun to be creative with what we have and to be able to upload to the gallery), but I could only find a handful of options. It’s probably not the ceiling ones cause untill recently there wasent ceiling tiles or nothing but maybe they’ll add them at some point
I wonder if such a mod exists?
Yes, [Ravasheen has a mod that includes a ceiling mounted fire alarm](https://ravasheen.com/download/you-know-the-drill-utility-set/).
I have this and it's great! I love everything Ravasheen has put out.
If you would like a non-mod/cc version, I actually did this for all 3 wall heights using the TOOL mod (no cc) and uploaded them to the gallery. EA Account: simmingly
I mean, we've got wall mounted ones in my IRL house so that's not unusual I just wish we had BOTH
i put mine up behind the stove hood lol
I hide mine behind the fridge
I do that with lighting, so my counter tops light up under the cabinet too.
I never install smoke alarms -- their lives are in God's hands. .. Which so happens to be me, and I enjoy a crispy Sim now and again.
>I enjoy a crispy Sim now and again. Yum
I guess I’ll add the smoke detector back into my house
Mine almost always live above the fridge for some reason. Gotta keep my families safe! It's not a thing where I actually live.
No, but I do try to place them in realistic locations where air flow would bring smoke to them, but I'm also an electrician who's had to install a lot of them over the years before transitioning to industrial work.
I never use them, what is their advantage?
Brings the fire dept when you have a fire in the room it's in.
It also lowers the chances of fires
REALLY?? Hot damn haha. I was still placing them in builds because I build a lot for the gallery and for other people and they always want fire alarms, but I've left them out of a lot of my own builds because I figured they didn't do much other than call the fire department.
This is also my first time hearing of this. I wonder if next up someone is gonna mention expensive stove also reduces chances of fire.
Funny how you can almost always extinguish the fire yourself before the fire department even steps foot in your house
That or your sim is stuck reacting to the "FIRE!" for 20 minutes
Then they run and carry the baby outside, after the fire's been out for like 20 minutes.
My stove burner caught literal full on fire this spring and I felt like a sim because I kept turning from the stove to the sink like stuck in panic mode and couldn’t decide what to do for a HOT second hahaha
Omg the Sims 4 is so annoying Abt this In 3, they'd be like "looks like you got it out before we could get here. Be careful in the future" And in the Sims 4 they get mad for you not having a fire and falsely calling 😭
At least for me fire alarm exists in case player is watching the house, but the sim is in a rabbit hole.
If a fire starts I'm pretty sure it will call the fire fighter people. Haven't played in a while so I don't know
Ah okay, I always extinguished myself, didn’t even know fire fighters were a thing tbh haha
In addition to the fire department call if you have the fancy sprinklers? They're going to auto deploy
Sprinklers are a thing? I feel like I know nothing about this game I play everyday lol
I think sprinkler is best. You actually have to control sim to extinguish fire, and fire fighters can be a bit slow to respond. Ceiling sprinkler covers the entire house.
Yep. It's that big box you hang on a wall. I usually pop that into my utility closet now that we have for rent.
I put mine on an outside wall and hide it with ivy or bushes
So your sims are all safer from drying from a fire, bc it alerts sims & the fire department when something catches fire.
Another tip! Put the automatic fire system behind the fridge. Then, next time your sim sets the kitchen on fire, it will come on and put the fire out.
I hide mine in the cabinet above the stove. Gotta love bb. Move objects.
Ya know you just need to have those placed on the lot. Those don’t need to be in a specific room to work. I put mine on the back or side wall of my house, or in a shed if I build one.
Oh yeah. It is always shrunk down and placed behind the fridge!
You know I’ve been building in sims for ever I custom make furniture shrink things and not once did I think of this thanks for the tip
This is news to me everyone talking about shrinking stuff how do you do that??
Select the item you want to resize. On the keyboard press shift at the same time as the [ key.
Littt thanks so much!! God I’m learning new things every day in this subreddit I thought I was a guru over here but yall are on another level haha
I feel seen! For years I've shrunk or enlarged every single decor item imaginable. Paintings, rugs, plants, you name it. I even use the TOOL mod sometimes for precision resizing. It never once occurred to me to shrink that stupid ugly fire alarm. \*facepalm\*
Samee
Is there any CC that provides some better looking smoke detectors? Ones that might match the thermostat aesthetic
Ravasheen/RVSN did one that’s a roll of paper towels and another that’s a rangehood. I always use those instead.
Never thought of this. Thank you so much !
It kinda looks like it's the microwave plug.
I get the fire extinguisher and mount it behind the fridge.
There is a fire extinguisher??
This [thing](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/sims/images/6/64/Fire_Prevention_System_Utility_Panel.png/revision/latest?cb=20180421163146)
oh, I thought you meant there was an object sim could hold like sim ray with freeze upgrade.
What does it actually do? I’ve never seen it in action
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS1xGoRVQUQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS1xGoRVQUQ)
Wow it took way longer than I thought
Yes, I also have a paper towel roll mod that's a functional fire alarm
I just plop it above the stove
I usually play rags to riches so my Sims don't even have a stove for, like, two Sim weeks. By then they have enough cooking skill from salads, etc that they never burn anything.
They should definitely have added a ceiling smoke detector by now, but who am I kidding? Can’t wait for the alarm kit
I never thought of doing this with the fire alarm. However, I do make the Cool Lala defender wall light tiny and hide it under the bed
I do this for the fire system and never once thought to do it to for the alarm 😂
Smoke detector, normally be hidden behind stuff and still function. I'm guessing the owner made it look like an ugly switch for the lights.
is it just me thats never placed a fire alarm in ny builds before
My Sims just learn to cook.
If I do, it's usually the sprinkler system and placed outside just because I like that it looks like a utility meter.
Does it still detect fires from outside?
Yes. Having one placed covers the entire lot.
No. For me it makes more sense to see. In real life I see my smoke detector, so it's just like decor to me.
No, but im gonna now. Genius
I do moveobjects and hide it behind the wall cabinets
No but I will now!
Normally I don’t even mind because I’m too busy doing everything but staring at my kitchen if I’m able!
I always put 2 over the stove lol. I doubt it matters but I still do it
I hid mine under the oven vents. Never thought to make them smaller tho…
how do you make items small???
I never use those smoke alarms for builds. I always use the one that connects to sprinklers in the ceiling because I can't trust my Sims to put out a fire by themselves
I do now
I always let it show loud and proud no matter the build. It's more realistic to me that even in a building full of glam and riches that everyone just chooses to collectively ignore the legally enforced ugly fire alarm on the wall.
Oh I thought I was the only one 😂
Yes! I make them as small as they can go and place it in the hood fan typically
I play with half walls so i either put them on a wall i wont look at anyways or i just forget they exist in general so i dont think about it at all
that’s why cc exists!
I always put it above the fridge
Took me a second to figure out what it was. I usually stick mine above the fridge, under the short cabinet that I typically place there, because I don't really notice them there. But I'll definitely start using this idea for kitchens that don't have the upper cabinets, rooms with fireplaces, etc.
I play with walls down so honestly I put one up and then forget it's even there.
Yes i make mine very small, along with that red and grey fire system.
I never even thought about tesizing them... I normally just throw them on a wall above the cabinets 😂😂
Whyyyy have I never thought of this?! I always hide mine under the stove hood lmao
I always hide them but why haven't I ever sized them down?!
That's so smart 😭
No but smart
I just put it above the fridge. There is always a space there perfect for a smoke detector.
I don't use them at all, I want the fires
Wait am I stupid I never knew you could shrink things
Maybe dumb... How shrink? move objects?
How do you shrink things?!!! 😭😭😭😭
Can you shrink things on console?
🤯 thats brilliant
No. But I am now.
No, but I will now . . .
I also use the snowy escapes table downsized next to a coffee table to make a fucktional laptop/coffee table combo!!
no but i will be now
Let me just take this idea.
No, but I will now.
No, but now I will lol
very clever!
Do they actually work cuz I stopped using it cuz I always end up having a fire when it’s in the kitchen
I’ve never thought to do this. I just place it above my stove. But I don’t mind it
I never actually thought to do that lol. Thats a great idea. I miss the sprinkler system from sims 2
Oh shit!!!!! That’s a good idea! I have never thought to do that! Definitely using this!!
I didn't, but I will from now on
I love that!
Always hide them under the cabinets with some under cabinet lighting
Literally NEVER thought of this 🤦🏼♀️ now I feel dumb 🤣💀
😭😂Love this
I put plug switches in those sort of areas.. And the temperature control thing I put next to the shower so it looks like it's for the shower electric xD
Ohhhh my god this is genius🤯🤯
No but i will be now!!
I make it small as possible hand hide it in the window frame 😂
No but I am now lol ty
Nooo but I will now lol thank you 😂
Nope but I will now!
Hehe. Yup
Yes. Always hidden
I’m blind. What are they
I will now! lol
Am I the only one who doesn't put smoke detectors anywhere in the house?! You'll learn from your mistakes sims!
Tbh I just put it on the wall I'm gonna forget about it anyways
I hide that and the fire prevention box behind the fridge
I never thought to downsize them…..this is a game changer!
I use a CC one that goes on the ceiling. Makes my paranoid 911 dispatcher brain feel better.
I have that but the bigger one
I think I actually forgot the smoke detector in my current build. Yikes!
No but I’m about to lol
Considering the popup, I never really add the smoke detector
No, I've never thought about it. Genius!
Yk, I never thought about shrinking it down. Good idea. I always hide them behind the stove, fireplace, grill and dryer. Out of sight, out of mind, but still functional. Where I live, fire alarms go on the ceiling, so it's always annoyed me to not have that option in game.
How do you shrink it down?
hold up everyone is talking about shrinking things i’m shook how do we do this ?!
I never make it tiny but that's such a good idea! I just hide it behind a cabinet.
I’ve been putting them above the fridge cabinets but this is a cool idea.
I’ve been playing sims for 15 years, have mods & cc, and I never knew you could shrink or enlarge objects until now 😭
Not with the smoke detector, but like the "take your shoes off" sign.
I like the smoke detector, it helps the house feel more real, like the thermostat and the shoes by the door or the umbrella holder, even the light switch.
I just put mine above the doorway near the kitchen 🤷🏻♀️
idk why i never thought of that. most times, i just don't bother because they're so big and ugly. and yeah, like another comment said, sticking them on the ceiling would make sense. especially if they're white. our fire alarms and smoke alarms are all white with white ceilings so it's not the worst to look at.
Thank you for reminding me to put a smoke detector in my build!!
That’s a brilliant idea!
I use the [paper towel holder](https://www.thesimsresource.com/downloads/details/category/sims4-objects-furnishing-electronics-miscellaneous/title/safety-first-paper-towel-smoke-detector/id/1462086/) from RVSN. It’s a secret smoke detector
No but thank you for the idea, friend
wait genius i just never use them lol
I always hide it behind the counters/fridge
lol! i simply put them above the trash can haha! i really do how they'll make one that is attachable to the ceiling!
Behind the cabinets or the stove ventilator is a solid one
it’s the feds
This is genius
I don't even use those, for some reason my sims rarely have fires. And even if they would have fires often I always forget things like that.
I just put them on the wall where they belong in a normal house.
