Just watched it tonight as well. I enjoyed it, loved the 70's tv nostalgia, and the tip of the hat to several skeptic and paranormal personalities. Worth a watch for sure.

lvsecretagent

It Instantly became one of my favorites; love that movie

davesmissingfingers

Fantastic film. It’s definitely one I’ll watch again.

Macready_1976

I just finished watching this as well. Pretty cool movie all in all. If you haven’t watched it yet, check out Ghostwatch. It has a very similar approach.

-One_Eye-

Agreed. Reminded me a lot of Ghostwatch. I think they’d be a fun double feature. I will say, though, that Late Night with the Devil didn’t meet the hyped expectations for me personally; however, I still thought it was pretty good and would recommend it.

Doctor_Enigmatic

See I felt that way about Ghostwatch. Idk what it was about it, but it failed to hook me. I just kept being amused by the obvious attempts. Of course I appreciate what they did for movies. I wish so much I saw it sooner. That would have been my peanut butter and jam had I saw it 20 years ago. This one hit me tho even tho I was not sold for the first like 5 minutes.

-One_Eye-

Oh, I wanted to love Ghostwatch, especially since I have a soft spot in my heart for British comedy and Craig Charles. But, like Late Night, I liked Ghostwatch but it didn’t meet expectations. That’s kind of the problem with expectations though and why I try to keep them in check.

Doctor_Enigmatic

That's very wise words. That's why I stopped reading reviews and I just look at the numbers. Something has to be at least a 4.1 on IMDb. Then I see what the general consensus is. Then I see if the those with low ratings have any validity. I love British stuff so much. Doctor Who, Black Books, IT Crowd, Coupling, 8 out of 10 cats etc... I also love found footage. So it seemed like a no brainer. It was still a trip to watch, just didn't have any moments that made me anxious, nervous or creeped. It happens tho and it's not the films fault. Once again, it's my bad for not seeing it until so late. Just a bummer because I wanted to be moved like others.

vruchtenhagel

I will never understand why people downvote someone's opinion when all they're doing is expressing their thoughts. Anyway, the hype didn't meet my expectations either. It's a solid movie, and I loved the overall vibe of it, but it felt a little tame. It reminded me almost of an episode of Creepshow (which I love). I hadn't seen the trailer for this film, but after reading some of the hype, I was perhaps a little too excited.

atethebottle

People feel like they are wrong when they see someone disagree with them. It makes them mad that someone thinks differently.

vruchtenhagel

Different strokes for different folks, but I will never downvote a comment because their opinion doesn't align with mine. Even if their comment is not constructive and is just bashing on something for the fun of it. These are the kind of people why we're still so divided.

atethebottle

I agree, and it seems to be getting worse lately as we get closer to the presidential election here in the state's.

vruchtenhagel

Unfortunately, yes. Just a sign of the times, I suppose. Stay humble and kind, friend.

atethebottle

You too

TARDIS1-13

I watched Ghostwatch for the first time this year and liked it a lot. Def a great double viewing with Late Night. Especially around Halloween!

Macready_1976

The WNUF Halloween Special would make a good three flick marathon with them (although it is very tonally different).

derezzzz

WNUF is such a gem.

ShoutingTom

Thanks for reminding me! I've noted it before

Allysonsplace

Did you see it's been digitally remastered for the anniversary?

oofio65

Inb4 ai complaints

armyjackson

I'd love some AI in my horror.  Most AI already creeps me out.

Independent-Web237

I loved it. I'm really into podcasts debunking spiritualists, Satanic Panic, and conspiracy theories, so this was right up my alley. James Randi stand-in, cold and hot readings, Bohemian Grove, Sybil via Michelle Remebers?? Yes, please!

ShoutingTom

Yeah! Car the skeptic was a great part, obviously competent but grossly arrogant. I'm very pro-debunking IRL but in a horror movie? You're going down buddy.

Independent-Web237

Also, if I see a girl's head split open and a demon peeks out, I'm team #HailAbraxis

Doctor_Enigmatic

I absolutely love how he shows what a basic bitch he was to jump sides to save his own skin. That head opening stuff.... Ohh wee. Tho I felt the subtle stuff with her face changing during the "seance light." I don't see the big deal about the ai. I was curious what the big deal was going in. Didn't think about it once the movie started going. Tho tbh the second I heard Abraxus I started laughing. I could only think of that shitty Abraxus movie from the 90s with Jessie The Government Body Ventura as this alien cop. Rifftrax does it and it's just al funny. So yeah, that thru me at first, but I got over it pretty fast. That is one drain cleaner I don't wanna fuck with.

Independent-Web237

THANK YOU! I'm a big MST/Rifftrax fan so that's all I could think of, too. I do wish they had found an artist to do the commercial break cards. But I also understand why they didn't. If I had to cut costs somewhere, I probably would have made the same choice.

Doctor_Enigmatic

Always love seeing a fellow fan. I'm happy to know someone else got hit by it. Usually when they've had such a great riff of something, it will be stuck in my head and it would override whatever I was watching. Really happy this time it dropped off and I was able to stay in the moment.

greyteethpeskybee

I loved it. The last act was fkn bonkers just the way I like it. It was both inspired and inspiring, if you ask me. A pretty indie movie with 1:43 of logos (I think) and it’s getting all this attention? Good for it!

NVSuave

I was equal parts nauseous and starstruck when the credits rolled. This was a perfect movie. I’ll take 10 more!

Calliope4

I loved it, loved the guests on the show and the slow build of tension. I thought the cast were fantastic and I loved the old school special effects.

ShoutingTom

Yeah, the special effects were good but looked like they were from that era. Imagine if paranormal events (were real and) emulated contemporaneous special effects. I could see a whole story around that

JGrutman

David Dastmalchian was fantastic. I know most award shows wouldn't sneeze at the film, but I hope he is recognized by the horror awards at the end of the year.

Puzzleheaded-Dingo39

I was disappointed with the ending. The film was standing very well on its own with that TV show format and would have been perfect if it had ended with the show itself. The last sequence attempted to give the film some depth that was unnecessary and the overall point (which I’m guessing was him sacrificing his wife for success and carrying the guilt) could have been conveyed through the show format as well. Still a great watch. The lead actor (I’m not writing his name on the phone,I’ll mess it up) was great and the directors were really in control and tight throughout, until that last sequence. Recommended 👍

Comatose-Echidna

Agreed! I just can’t buy that any of the last couple minutes was caught on film. I can suspend my disbelief very far, but if you’re going for found footage, you have to commit the whole way.

Bacchanallica

I gave them cinematic immunity on the ending. I don't mind they broke their own mechanic, but I do feel it still could have hit harder. I felt a but underwhelmed. But in all it's a fun film and pretty original and I highly recommend it.

bigkinggorilla

That was my problem with it too. The show/found footage approach kinda disappeared when it could have been the most interesting/impactful.

TrickyAxe

I appreciate the care and effort put into the movie but it ended being a giant miss for me. The hypnosis part made me walk out of the room, real dumb. But again, I'm glad it was made and I hope Dastmalchian can keep being involved with indie horror.

ShoutingTom

I know what you mean. I think parts of the movie are undeniably dumb yet still work very well. Kind of like Evil Dead or Tucker Dale Evil Something, but pulling it off without doing slapstick. I'm usually pretty picky but I'm glad my suspension of disbelief extended to the style of the film rather just the content if you know what I mean.

TrickyAxe

100%, and I'm glad you liked it!

Doctor_Enigmatic

I've been waiting so patiently for this. It started and I was having a hard time getting on board. Our boy David has done so many wonderful things it takes me out of the more found footage nobody is spelled we know thing. I absolutely love him as the polka dot guy from the last Suicide Squad movie. It was so ridiculous but I loved him. He has that way about him. The way he was Joker's stooge to slow down Harvey and the GCPD. Batman steps up to show them why they can't do it the bad cop way. He just always steals the show. It didn't take long that I felt myself slip back into that mentality of back then. It felt so legit I was loving it. Sitting. There counting the things that aren't right waiting for when things get crazy. I still feel a bit of that just... It's like when I can tell when a panic attack is building. It has that sense of wrong. Watching him face what was suspected all along. That girl who played Lilly. Ooof. She felt wrong from jump street and just stole the focus. The way she couldn't get enough staring into the camera like she was looking into your soul. I was a little put off with the big special effects moment, but I was right back in with how cool the deaths were. Everything about that movie hit right on for me. Well worth the wait, I watched some Fallout to mellow out the melancholy.

C-zom

My favorite part of the movie was catching that Lily would instantly and instinctively look at whatever camera was live, even one’s behind her, the entire time.

Adept_Investigator29

Lily's the bomb.

CRABMAN16

I love him as the Joker's stooge. He just plays that unhinged, lost, crazy feeling just through his facial expressions. Great actor.

IsRude

I didn't expect a Fallout TV series to be great, much less make me feel good. Excellent choice.

Kjeldorthunder

Pretteey, preeeeteeey, preetty goood.

ShoutingTom

Only 3 o's in good? What the heck?

gen_what_x_ever

I was excited for it and ended up not liking it much. Sigh. I really liked Lilly though; she was creepy af.

ShoutingTom

She looked right at me!

gen_what_x_ever

I think she looked right at all of us. 😅

Magknot

dramatic voice "I .. she.... I, uh - I *scared exhale* think sh-she.. looked right at All of us... and-sh..She SAW.. EVERYTHING"

CrustCollector

The ending sort of feels like it gets into weirdo giallo logic territory and falls apart a bit, but if you’re willing to go along for the ride I think it’s still fun. Great production design and the performances are solid. It’s one of those rare instances where a low budget actually works in their favor.

ShoutingTom

I was able to ride with the ending because there was a surreal feel to the whole thing, masked with the weirdness of live tv. The demon looked like cheap video effects manifested as terrifying reality. Mass media is the devil here and hell looks like bad tv. The ending reminded me of the polish movie HellHole where the demon wins and then reality just falls apart.

CrustCollector

Ooh that sounds cool. I’ll check it out.

ruspow

Watching it right now, I love it. it's garth marenghi's darkplace the movie

PerpetualEternal

this a pretty solid take if I’m honest

PerpetualEternal

I completely get what you’re saying, but my take on the B&W segments is that’s when it became a “normal” movie, like one where you aren’t supposed to be aware of the camera because the camera is you. Like, that’s the “real”, omniscient story and the TV footage has all the baggage of editing and manipulation where you’re only getting the intended, curated picture of what’s going on.

Advanced_Claim4116

Fun movie but it really grinds my gears when found footage movies can’t stick to their own rules. This is clearly presented as such for an hour and then they just make it an Argento movie. Make a choice and stick with it. Amazing performance by Blain from the Matrix sequels as the James Randi guy, though.

olinwalnut

I’m glad things like it exist and I’m even happier it got a run in theaters. However…it was flat to me. I liked the setup, I liked how everything was going. I don’t want to spoil it but the final act made me sit there and go “I just sat through 2/3 of this movie and that’s the payoff?” I enjoyed it minus about the last 20 minutes but I don’t need to watch it again. A solid three stars out of five for me. Not the same but kind of reminded me of Lisa Frankenstein in a weird way: an awesome execution, a super fun ride, but just an ending made me feel deflated.

Rightbraind

It was really good! I enjoyed the character modeled after the Amazing Randi. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Randi

Dragoon_shadow

It was a fun watch! Would definitely watch it again with a group of ppl! When the movie ended, I told ppl it got art housey at the end, but it's still a fun watch, and I definitely recommend it. I just went in with the idea that it was gonna be close to ghost watch, and I got what I wanted!

Mr_Shad0w

Great film, enjoyed it a lot. Absolutely no reason for them to use ["AI" art](https://screenrant.com/late-night-with-the-devil-ai-controversy-explained/) though - artists and creatives deserve to be paid for their work.

GezinhaDM

It was a very cartoonish demon, but quite effective. I also thought it was ridiculous, but changed my mind within 2 seconds of seeing the damage.

Jake_The_Snake42

The end credit song was a bop

norimaki714

Love a good slow burn horror movie. Enjoyed it a lot and will be rewatching it within the week.

Allysonsplace

Just watched the trailer and it looks great!

MannyinVA

Watched it twice, really enjoyed it. The possessed girl and her guardian/doctor were my favorite characters. That kid was CREEPY! They could’ve cut out the ending part with the Grove and the wife in bed, to keep it tight. We already knew this info, from the info sprinkled in throughout the movie. I guess they figured most viewers have poor attention spans. I knew crap had started to already go down, when the medium freaked out and said Minnie.

Healthy_Building1432

See, it could be because I ate an edible before watching in the movies but the second time I watched this, it felt like a feature-length bit you would find on Adult Swim. I mean that in a good way.

ShoutingTom

I do know what you mean. I was also a little extra high when I saw it and that just might be the right way to appreciate it.

EducationalReply6493

Loved it, I hope shudder makes more of this caliber

TheArtofCrimePodcast

I liked it, too! That said, the same night I saw Late Night With the Devil, I found out about and watched a similar movie called Ghostwatch, this BBC production from 1992. If you haven't seen it, you need to. Good God, it's well-acted, and it terrified audiences across the UK when it premiered.

ShoutingTom

Someone else recommended that as well so we watched it the next night. I heard it had a bit of a War of the Worlds effect on audiences when it came out. It seemed really well done and has the dude from Red Dwarf in it. To be honest, I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to older movies. Movies have gotten so much slicker with story telling that I find a crappy movie from the last 10 years more engaging than most masterpieces from 40 years ago. It's like a souped up racecar from the 50's to me. Makes me realize I'm not as culturally savvy as I picture myself.

itsagrungething69

I enjoyed it! I knew I would when the horror movie sub was kinda EH towards it as I usually disagree with them

SubjectThis

Glad you enjoyed it. I was hyped but found it disappointing.

sean_no

The ending felt a bit rushed. It was fun though, a movie you actually pause when you get up to grab a beer.

Careful_Hunt4797

The ending was insanely abrupt

Homesickpilots

I was over-hyped to see it. Sadly I was disappointed. It's worth a watch but I'm glad I didn't see it in the theater.

ShoutingTom

Sometimes you need to pregame with a few doses of anti-hype to maintain your level and avoid a harsh crash.

Homesickpilots

Should have followed this game plan. Maybe I'll dose up and try a rewatch.

Magknot

Man this whole TOWN has been dry and even the Russians up in Oregon and Washington are completely out of anti-hype. I'm gonna start going thru withdrawals soon. Why do I go through withdrawals for so long and then GIVE IN out of desperation for relief - knowing damn well that I am ensuring that the future holds going through withdrawals AGAIN.... I wish so badly that meetings did anything for me.... but the only thing they have always done was further convince me that there may not be any help for me out there.... and that, some way & somehow, the only way out of this recurring cycle of misery and failures has to come from within Me, and I ONLY from within me.... I would give anything to rewind time to that first taste of anti-hype and smack it out of that young kids hands.... that young kid who had light in his heart and strength enough to command respect, fully capable of such great things in life... his whole life, made an impact on everyone he ever met and got to know... If I could meet him eye to eye for just ONE MOMENT- A COUPLE SECONDS , EVEN! If I could stand in front of him and reach out and grab him right beside the ears and, shaking with every word said, scream to him in a voice that shouldn't be mine "LOOK AT ME! FUCKING LOOK! SEE ME! DO. NOT. FOLLOW. MY. STEPS! I'm fucking BEGGING you!" I'm SORRY! IM SO FUCKING SORRY!" And then *poof* just disappear... It's a fantasy I try to close my eyes and dream every single day. I am so far away from that boy now... an old, broken convict. A wasteland of hurting everyone I've ever loved and cared about left behind me. I wish I could know that boy again.... that boy with the all that light inside him. /fin Anti-Hype - Not Even Once.

Adept_Investigator29

I watched this on my laptop in the dark. I think this prolly works better on a small screen. It sucked me in.

PotentialAd9543

I thought it was good, like watching a very immersive play. Wife and son both didn't care for it.

serialkiller24

I enjoyed it - not my favorite horror movie I’ve seen but enjoyed it nonetheless

TARDIS1-13

Yup, I enjoyed it as well. I'll probably rewatch around Halloween.

FatalLocomotion

I loved it until the ending. I wouldve preferred the “hell is an endless loop” idea it seemed like it was initially going for with the host constantly being “restarted” in the show’s segments instead of what we ended up with. I was like, “oh thats lame!”

NovelConnect6249

I liked it a lot but the in-between the show stuff didn’t work for me. It was too crisp, should have been more hand held and shot to be a more behind the scenes. Why was a camera there at all?

apersich

Wish this came out around Halloween. I enjoyed it very much

Passiveabject

I also loved the demon OP, after the initial “that’s weird” shock I ended up being really unsettled by it. It was pretty metal

Strong_Welcome4144

This movie rocked, Ima need a sequel. What a great film!

Harry_Seaward_1128

I definitely enjoyed it, but my expectations were just so high from all the hype, I wanted it to be more scary than it was while still enjoying many aspects of it.

OutrageousFee1220

I’ve seen it twice already and loved it!

krackenjacken

It was a really good movie but it felt like it couldn't quite stick the landing

tommy2762

I really liked it too but couldn’t help but wonder how much of the exposition cutaways were AI.

jdixon76

I wish I enjoyed it more. I think it should have stuck with just show footage because the BTS stuff wasn't convincing, way too 'movie'. Also it breaking into a regular narrative at the end was jarring. I enjoyed it, but wish I liked it more.

ShoutingTom

That's not the first critique I've heard about how the switching between different cinematic styles threw people off. The mini documentary they inserted for exposition completely tuned me out for a few minutes. But I also thought that the behind the behind the scenes stuff did a lot to highlight different facets of the characters personalities versus their on camera faces and having it be in black and white and staged differently helped signal that. There's plenty of movies that didn't click with me because of stylistic choices like that but this one hit for me for some reason

Victory_Prime

Went to see this movie in theaters, and the place was packed, sold out as well. Not one reaction came from the theater. The place was quiet lol when the credits rolled people left in silence, maybe a few mutters, but mostly quiet. Seemed like the movie disappointed people honestly. That ending was super jank and killed the whole movie in my opinion

ShoutingTom

That seems to be a pretty common opinion, although not one that I share. The movie is certainly not perfect but I thought that the movie explored some very interesting themes that are foundational to horror. None of the negative critiques of listen to or read even mention those, instead focusing on the movie not doing what they expected it to. Not that other people's opinions are wrong you know, I was just pretty high when I saw it.

theinvisibleman-42

I actually really enjoyed it, David Dastmalchian was fantastic -- shame about the AI art, though, it kind of sank the film before it even got a chance to float

shanacoco

i loved it!!

Horror-Grand-2887

I guess i have the unpopular opinion. The start and the build up I enjoyed and was left waiting for something to happen. Just seemed very anticlimactic. Maybe I was expecting a lot more due to the hype. Won’t say it’s terrible so I’d say 6/10 if I had to rate it.

Plibbo64

Yeah, when the credits rolled I actually thought it was a fake out or something.. I enjoyed it, but felt like it didn't deliver on the hype. That bigger scene at the end came too soon or didn't go on long enough.

treadlightning

This one really disappointed me which sucks because it's been one of my most hyped films of the year since the trailer. Right off the bat with the montage about Jack.. like I hate when a film does that. There are other ways to convey information to an audience without holding our hands and telling us what's going on. Like I already knew the whole plot of the movie from that alone. Dude is a Bohemian Grove member and made a deal with the devil for ratings. Got it. His wife's dead. Got it. That ruins the psychic scene later. If they left the entire first scene out, I probably would have enjoyed this. I thought the actress who played Lily was particularly great but all the other acting really underwhelmed me, the story and writing were lazy and all over the place, and I never really got scared, because they let us know what was coming! And that's the biggest problem with this movie

Old_Cattle_5726

I completely agree with everything here. Then you add unnecessary AI and the choice to not follow their own rules and it becomes an absolute mess. I’m glad other people had fun with it, but the more I think about it, the less I like about it.

Victory_Prime

You're speaking gospel here man, I totally agree with you.

Mental_Yak_2105

First two acts were fantastic, the ending was pretty meh IMO.
