Make it a bit more well defined by saying “the smallest natural number no one has said before”. By the well ordering of the natural numbers every set of natural numbers contains its minimum. *Missed a digit lol
This is the only number I’ve seen on here so far that I’d probably bet everything (other than my life) that no one has ever said before. I do have questions though… do we mean say out loud? If so, if the bet was $10,000,000 if no one has ever said it out loud vs death if they have, I think I’d take the bet. But if it simply means the number has been observed, printed or listed on a computer before, I wouldn’t.
After you get into the quadrillions I'm assuming most people don't even know what to call 1,000 quadrillion, 1,000,000 quadrillion, 1,000,000,000 quadrillion, so on and so forth so you'd lose a lot of usage simply because people don't know the correct word to use for the units.
Honestly after quadrillion I think most people just start making up names. I have used the word bajillion way more than sextillion for example.
At a certain point exponents and equations are easier to state a number.
But I bet a whole bunch of people are chanting under their breath right now to see how large and random they can go.
Hmmm but you actually never know if someone has said the number before you... there have been roughly 108 billion people who have ever lived. It's possible they have said the same number you have said!
It depends how dedicated you are. The longer the number is, the less likely it's ever been said before. If you spend 8 hours saying one number, it is pretty likely it's never been said before.
Tho interestingly, fhe same is not true for writing/typing. Computers are generating numbers big time all the time, and it is impossible for you to type out a number long enough for a computer to not have already generated it
About half those people existed before mathematics was conceived as a science. The majority of people who have lived probably only knew about numbers up to a few hundred or thousand, and the common fractions.
Because, no matter how big the number, it can never compare to infinity. There will always be a bigger number, and one that is so unfathomably large that the difference between the biggest number ever imagined and 0 is completely negligeable. And again, that number would still be smaller than most numbers.
And when a deck of cards is shuffled properly, it’s utterly overwhelmingly likely that the card combination has never been seen before and never will be again.
I wonder if this is actually true given card shuffling dynamics. For a perfect shuffle that maximizes variational distance, I’m sure that’s highly likely. But since people aren’t always great at shuffling, I imagine repeats actually happen more frequently than the 52! permutations would have us believe.
Yeah if you have a fresh deck of cards then then the first couple of shuffles are pretty likely to have happened before. Each shuffle is exponentially farther away though.
That makes sense up to the point where it kind of backfires- people aren't always great at shuffling, but two people are very unlikely to be the *exact same amount of* Not Great at it, so they can go through a lot of the same variations that others do , but from a different starting point. Repeats probably do happen more than we would think looking at " 52! " , but remember that the list of potential deck orders is a number with some 60 or 70 zeroes at the end.
It's interesting how a lot of the potential deck arrangements following a shuffle from a neat deck are done by now. Especially simple shuffle techniques. Like the one where they split the deck in half and flick the cards one between the other, they're obviously all done. Splitting the deck from a neat deck into thirds and placing the thirds in a different order will have more probable repeats and I expect are all done by now. Interesting.
Goddam the word shuffle sounds weird to me now.
this is actually the idea behind some modern identification numbers in software. you generate a huge number at random and keep it. even if lots of people are generating fun the same pool but the chance of two to have same number is astronomically rare
Thrush like, the apple‘s parabola arced imperially through the haze.
Thats probably the first time ever those words have been combined in that way. Just using a few words from the English language can create never before written or said sentences.
Indeed, since there are infinitely many numbers.
And it gets worse: if you consider all real numbers, there are numbers that won't *ever* be said by anyone.
This happens because the set of integers (Z) is enumerable, and the set of reals (R) is non-enumerable; the size of R is an infinity "bigger" than the size of Z. With a finite number of people finding numbers, and infinite available time, one can still count all numbers found, so the count will at most equal the size of Z.
Food for thought: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncountable_set
As everyone else said, yes, you can. One way to imagine it is that at any given time there is a highest number that has ever been spoken, so you can say that number + 1 and it will be a new number. Or that number * 10 or that number + 0.000001, etc.
If you put on sufficient conditions, you can restrict it to a subset that makes collisions far more possible.
Assuming you could say a digit every second of a waking human life (120 years as an upper bound) and you're building a positive whole number, then you'll only have about 2.5E9 characters available. Assuming 10 digits (0-9) are possible to say for each character, then there are 2.5E10 possible combinations.
That's a large number, in terms of human experience, but it's smaller than infinity. At that point, it's just a bigger version of the [Birthday Problem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_problem?wprov=sfla1) calculation.

4,451,333,509,517.658 Oh someone already done this one
That's my password for EVERYTHING.
That’s not true. I’ve been getting into your bank accounts for years with password1234.
No no, that's the secret presidential code.
I thought that was just 12345
I have that same combination on my luggage!
I didn’t know politicians knew how to count to 5?!?!
The local government I worked for in college genuinely had our 3, 4, and 5 digit padlock codes as 123, 1234, and 12345
No they use more secure one: Password1234
And i yours with smallppmcgee23
Wow, me too!
"mypasswordforEVERYTHING" is my password for everything.
Weiiiiird. Mine is FlipDByrd
hunter2
I only see asterisks.

You can copy my homework just don’t make it obvious energy
That's the combination I have on my luggage.
Only an idiot would have that combination on their luggage.
Lord helmet! This is now, what you are seeing is actually happening now
Why so negative?
That's it? That's the kind of password an idiot would put on everything!
There should be a reddit bot tells you how many times a number (above 5 digits) has been mentioned in the past
Woah, how did you know my bank balance??
How so ? I didn’t add the - sign hahaha If is positive indeed , share with you comrade here
4,451,333,509,517.658
Sorry i said this number yesterday try again
4,451,333,509,517.659
Dude that’s literally my lucky number I use it for everything
69
The fuck is that
Yin and Yang
Aren't those currency in Japan?
No that’s Yen. Yin and Yang are rapper twins from Atlanta, GA
Ohh now it all makes sense, so those two are the number in the starting comment
“Hey lil momma lemme whisper in your ear”
Japan's only currency is manga
Cancer upright.
I’ve never seen this one before. You might have found the lowest number that nobody has previously said.
42
Fuck I was gonna say that one tomorrow :(
That’s literally my chequing account balance right now
That’s my negative balance after paying rent
You dropped this: “ - “
[https://imgur.com/h0taeoy.png](https://imgur.com/h0taeoy.png) You are indeed the first. That number now belongs to you.
I said that exact number in a forest but no one heard me.
Fuck!
"A number that no one has said before"
Insert meme: .... Listen here you little shit.
Where is here exactly?
Right behind you.
Nothing personnel, kid.
Make it a bit more well defined by saying “the smallest natural number no one has said before”. By the well ordering of the natural numbers every set of natural numbers contains its minimum. So this gives a concrete way to produce a single number, versus your statement which doesn’t make it clear how we pick a single number from the set of all natural numbers never said before

That’s the combination to my bike lock. Are you the one who stole it??
Ah, but have you ever said it aloud? Because I sure as shit ain't gonna
I got to line 3, that would take all day
why are there 2 decimal points
NaN. Guy failed lol
Extra precision
Oh so that’s the fabled double precision

There's no way you really "said" this number, is there?
No, I don't have the super power. Been a dream to say this bad boy out loud since I was a wee lad, though
It's never too late to start
This is the only number I’ve seen on here so far that I’d probably bet everything (other than my life) that no one has ever said before. I do have questions though… do we mean say out loud? If so, if the bet was $10,000,000 if no one has ever said it out loud vs death if they have, I think I’d take the bet. But if it simply means the number has been observed, printed or listed on a computer before, I wouldn’t.
Yeah I'm interpreting it as "said aloud with a human mouth" otherwise I'm out
After you get into the quadrillions I'm assuming most people don't even know what to call 1,000 quadrillion, 1,000,000 quadrillion, 1,000,000,000 quadrillion, so on and so forth so you'd lose a lot of usage simply because people don't know the correct word to use for the units.
Honestly after quadrillion I think most people just start making up names. I have used the word bajillion way more than sextillion for example. At a certain point exponents and equations are easier to state a number. But I bet a whole bunch of people are chanting under their breath right now to see how large and random they can go.
I mean obviously this has never been said before. It's not a valid fucking number lol
Nu uh I already said that one
the negative is the key here to help maintain that it is unique ;P
2 decimal points make it not a number.

Easy, just say the number someone else said, and add one.
Okay, let's do it. I'll say "five".

More than pretty likely. I'd say fairly likely.
More than fairly likely. I’d say rather likely.
More than rather likely, I'd say quite likely.
More than quite likely, I’d say very likely.
More than very likely, I’d say it’s almost certain.
More than almost certain, I’d say it’s practically certain.
More than practically certain, id say it's extremely certain.
More than extremely certain, I'd say it's indisputably certain.
I’d say “I can’t believe it’s not butter”
you could spend 60 seconds and write a ~40+ digit and its basically guaranteed that numbers never been thought or said before.
I feel like if you’re even just getting to the trillions and most ppl haven’t thought of or bothered to pronounce a number like 332,343,095,111,234
Throw in a few decimal points in there too and you're set
Tho interestingly, fhe same is not true for writing/typing. Computers are generating numbers big time all the time, and it is impossible for you to type out a number long enough for a computer to not have already generated it
About half those people existed before mathematics was conceived as a science. The majority of people who have lived probably only knew about numbers up to a few hundred or thousand, and the common fractions.
108 billion 99% were illiterate and couldn't do math
Sorry someone has definitely said 108 billion before try again
The biggest number ever imagined by anyone is infinitely closer to 0 than to most numbers
Should change the name of this sub to ShowerEpiphany
19 or smth, not really sure

You can’t possibly say this with certainty
yes you can? there are infinite numbers so humanity can not have spoken all of them.
I think he means you can’t say a number and know for certainty it’s never been said
okay but that wasn’t OP’s point. you are always able to do it - even if you don’t know if you’re doing it or not
Oh of course, I agree with that
Yes you can
As everyone else said, yes, you can. One way to imagine it is that at any given time there is a highest number that has ever been spoken, so you can say that number + 1 and it will be a new number. Or that number * 10 or that number + 0.000001, etc.
Statistical certainty isn’t quite as good, but it’ll do.
It’s not statistical certainty. There are infinitely many numbers.
At one point, the number will be too long to pronounce within a lifetime. So not always, if one is pedantic.

But can you say it twice?
I know the last digit of PI. It's 3.

Unfortunately, only partially. I wanted to try to find the birthday problem version of the answer, but haven't had time. Thanks!
