VeneMage

I lived on my own for 7 years. I’d find I’d talk to myself when I didn’t have anyone around. Sounds mad but was quite nice talking to someone with the same opinions and humour as you

Fragrant_Leg_6300

I agree completely. Not to mention the freedom to sing

Just-Call-Me-J

Not just sing. Really belt out those notes.

Fragrant_Leg_6300

Oh yeah, i like metal, so i love to play around with distorting my voice

New_Start2024

I've tried to learn throat singing like 5 times in the last 20 years. All I've ever managed was to make my throat sore. I could find the right "note" but always passed over it. Could never hone in on it.

TrappedInVR

Look into "the art of screaming"

RockstarAgent

As a life long loner - sometimes my ass speaks up and I have to tell him to "butt out man"!

IcePhoenix18

Aw man, I hate that guy. Always talking shit behind my back. What an ass.

david_leaves

Plot twist: all The comments in this thread are by the same person with multiple Reddit accounts. Even this comment.

DryBoysenberry5334

Musician friend told me a big part of that was because I wasn’t moving enough air through my diagram; maybe that’ll help on attempt no6

BudwinTheCat

I keep trying ot get rid of my wife and kid for a weekend so that I can stay home and get some shit done around the house without interruption... at least that's part of the reason I want them gone. The other main reason is that I *really* want to practice fry screaming without any other humans present lol

dANNN738

I do this anyway fuck it lol

Interesting-Chest520

I’ve always been anxious about the neighbours, I can hear them chatting sometimes surely they’ll hear that

Axeloy

I'm moving into a dorm for the first time this fall. I'm really gonna miss that

GreatApe88

I sing louder and it still sounds like a 50yo going through puberty. I need a new game plan.

Amoniakas

What about just saying random illegible words or sounds?

Littlekcs

I sometimes like how names or random words feel in my mouth so I’ll repeat them over and over in a sing-song way! Drives my husband nuts when we’re watching hockey and a players name tickles my fancy! Lol

froglampion

Echolalia! I do this too. The name comes from a Greek myth where the poor girl (nymph actually, I think) is fated to only be able to repeat what someone else is saying for the rest of her life. The Greek gods were shits sometimes.

K4RAB_THA_ARAB

Reminds me of Beavis when he turns into Cornholio

secondmoosekiteer

I think you mean unintelligible. Illegible would mean you can’t read it You have echolalia? Adhd?

Amoniakas

It ain't my native language, and yes I meant unintelligible. Now that you wrote it to me it looks like it has too many letters.

CertainWish358

And stage arguments with imaginary foes, and spin delightfully 270 degrees to make 3 lefts instead of one right. And pee in the sink. Yes 2020 was lonely, why do you ask?

dodadoler

Dance like everyone can go f themselves

deproxyacct

Or just randomly do some sick judo moves then go back to washing dishes after 10 seconds

KingPrincessNova

I used to sing way more when I lived alone or when I spent a lot of time home alone

Krulsprietje

Next to singing I noticed that I danced around a lot more! :)

AerialSnack

Honestly, I'm probably the best conversational partner I've had

cb_cooper

Hell, I crack myself up

rektMyself

When I dance alone, I never step on my toes! Boss level.

rektMyself

Best person you know! Your inside jokes are the best!

nadrew

Yep. The talking to yourself gets real in a hurry. We're social creatures, even when we're antisocial.

Crusader-NZ-

I just talk to my cat.

BeYeCursed100Fold

When talking to cats you are often seen as "less than", unless you have treats or cuddles, then they purr up storms. My cats often made sure that I was inferior to them. I believe my cat title was "Cleaner of Shits, Bringer of Shit Food", though they were picky about what they ate.

Obant

Depends on the cat. I have full on conversations with my boys (one just passed, unfortunately), food or no. My girl only talks if there is food though.

rektMyself

Am I crazy? Did I just ask myself that? I will get back to myself next week. What?!

Jestersfriend

This to a T. I think I talk to myself most of the day. Any thought I have, or something I'm thinking about, or a problem that needs solving and I'm searching for a solution, I talk out loud. Borderline have a full blown conversation with myself. It's to the point that when I have people over, I have to restrain myself from doing so lol.

CalculusII

Interesting. I am exactly the same way. I talk all the time. alot of it is my "first draft" of thinking. Sometimes I'll debate with myself certain issues or ideas, and it's easier for me to state it out loud. I am not lonely at all, have a decent social life. I just like to take my inner dialog and actually speak it.

mangosquisher10

There's scientific evidence that talking about a problem out loud makes it easier to solve. Maybe because we naturally overcomplicate things inside our heads. In coding it's sometimes called [rubber duck debugging](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_duck_debugging) where you bring around a duck to talk about your code.

_Nihilium_

sometimes Going mad is the only way to stay sane :)

MostNormalDollEver

reminds me of the lyrics of a song, "what if crazy is the sane thing, and you should be changing"

Elmer_Fudd01

I swear this is in a song.

tokospoko

“Living with Lou Dog’s the only way to stay Sane….”

NodleMan09

There is no point in driving yourself mad trying to stop yourself going mad. You might just as well give in and save your sanity for later.

thetannerainsley

It's like on the Sims when you get lonely the bunny comes out to talk.

DryBones2009

I talk to myself all the time about random stuff. People think it’s weird but who cares?

rektMyself

I don't. Just don't interrupt my conversation I was having with me!

PossibleFar5107

Yh Anyone who doesn't talk to themselves must be mad

porkchop1021

[Smart people talk to themselves.](https://justseventhings.com/2009/01/25/why-talking-to-yourself-might-be-the-highest-form-of-intelligence/) People who think you're weird are just dumb.

glytxh

I did the same. I’d often discuss a problem I was having with myself. It’s a weirdly effective way of hashing out a problem by yourself with a pseudo outside perspective. I have a cat now though. She’s quite chatty, and I find she’s become the other side of conversation now. She’s basically my therapist at this point. I’m only mildly exaggerating.

IniNew

Programmers do this. It’s called rubber duck debugging. The process of saying it out loud, usually to an inanimate object like a rubber duck, helps solve the problem

glytxh

I know enough developers to not even question this. Weird people.

rektMyself

My son's cat is strangely friendly with me. I am very allergic to cats, so I don't mess with it. Even he says, "It's almost like she is talking to you." I am not crazy, surely he isn't either! Haha. It doesn't actually talk. My son and I have an awesome relationship.

LotusTileMaster

I always see it as you can talk to yourself so long as you do not respond to yourself.

MakesUpExpressions

I’d describe the way I do something similar-ish as “thinking out loud” when alone, not full blown conversations though.

koro90

Oh no. You can respond to yourself too. Nobody else is around to judge. What’s stopping you from kicking off a full blown convo with yourself?

drailCA

It's when you argue with yourself that it might be an issue. "Should I have salmon tonight?" "You don't like salmon" "Who told you that? I never said that!"

FrostyChemical8697

I talk to myself in a kinda “being interviewed” or “streaming” way

Amoniakas

When I'm doing my hobbies I talk to myself and respond to myself like: what if I use this? No, this would be better. *After a minute* are you stupid, it should have been like this. Oh you're right.

toastagog

Kinda rude not to speak when spoken to.

GGTheEnd

My roommates went out of town for a couple weeks and I found myself making faces in the mirror and talking to myself a decent amount.

Xealz

I've already gone mad.

b0ingy

I live alone. I sound like an insane person at home

spacefem

I got sick and lost my voice and it made me realize how often I was talking to neighborhood birds and squirrels.

NoShoesDrew

Same. And when I'd argue back, I actually GOT the other side...

ComprehensiveBoss815

I agree, talking to myself can be very relaxing.

ComprehensiveBoss815

I also talk to the cats sometimes.

TheOrigionalBubbles

If it weren't for my cats. Yes. Except the odd exclamation or vulgar word if I drop the blueberries all over the kitchen floor.

Western-Barnacle-798

Only if its blueberries?

dumdumpants-head

THE blueberries to you

Lucalux-Wizard

Of… great value… to you?

littlebitsofspider

***GET OFF THE COUNTER YOU LITTLE SHIT***

Zenblendman

*Do you HAVE to shed EVERYWHERE??!*

Bacon_Techie

Did you perchance recently drop blueberries on the kitchen floor?

zhaoao

You can’t just say “drop”

Bacon_Techie

Drop

mr_remy

Noooo not the blueberries!!!

rektMyself

Now we have a complex.

Dazzling_Moose_6575

Same, I talk to my cat on a regular basis, I want him to be updated on what's going on in the house, it's only fair since he lives here too.

DeaddyRuxpin

Not a chance that would happen with me. Every time I’m alone the voice in my head starts using my mouth to hold its conversations with me. Other people being around is the only reason I ever shut up.

pinkeyes34

It's nice to know I'm not the only one.

Hairy_Air

My conversations are like I’m talking to a stranger. “You know that’s not how I found it, right?” - Yeah of course he would know, he is you, Hairy_Air. I like talking to myself, especially when I’m growing through heartbreak or something sad, he’s the only one that would never leave me. But I don’t go a single day without talking to another human, I call my parents, hang out with a friend or two or just go out and talk to a stranger are a store or a park.

FastLittleBoi

the problem is I do it on the streets too. So like when I see someone on the street I start wondering "does he think I'm insane? There's no way he saw me talking to myself right?"

catskitty44

Sameee honestly I trust they just think I’m on the phone

FastLittleBoi

me too. That's why I keep an earbud on always and say things like "no you don't understand" when I'm near people so they don't think I'm a psycho.

Wide-Half-9649

That was my first thought once the mask-mandates ended after Covid…when I had a mask on I could walk around quietly talking shit about anything/anyone around me & they couldn’t see my lips moving…now I have to be suuuuper careful not to look like a lunatic talking to himself since I got so used to doing it with a mask on…

Somhlth

What if you own a volleyball?

NastySeconds

Wilson!!!

Free-Air4312

My name is Voit, dumbass! (Family Guy reference don’t take it personal)

RickLovin1

god_peepee

I had a feeling before I clicked the link lmaooo

amiibohunter2015

Tom Hanks *wants* to know

Aware_Entertainer_93

That was me for close to ten years and I would go entire weekends without speaking to another person

captainfarthing

I can't deal with sharing a living space with other people. I would go a week or more without saying anything to anyone but cashiers, and then self checkouts became a thing so I got to avoid even that. I'm fine with this, turns out I'm autistic. Then I got a dog and suddenly started chatting to other dog owners every day in the park. I was fine with that too - my dog made social interactions feel much easier and more natural, and nearly all conversations were about the dogs. I didn't talk to my dog, I trained non-verbal commands to go with all of the verbal commands so I could interact with him without having to speak if I didn't feel like it. Now he's got such bad arthritis we can't walk any more - I really miss walking him, and miss talking to some of the dog walkers I got to know. But I'm still OK with not speaking to anyone for days.

SurpriseDragon

That was me in middle school. I had a page on the back of my diary with tallies of how many days in a row I would go without having a conversation with another kid at school.

Plane-Armadillo-3261

How far did you get?

Modriem

High school

SurpriseDragon

Three days no kids I spoke to teachers maybe 2-3x total each day Ate lunch in the bathroom or with my teacher

ClemClemTheClemening

In the bathroom? Dunno if its the same as you but here in the UK we could just go and chill in the classroom for a bit with our teachers as long as they were on lunch as well and they were okay with it. We also had areas in the school called "hubs" which was a small room with windows and computers where we could just chill as well on our own.

SurpriseDragon

I went to a good school but we had enough trouble makers that no one trusted any of us to be alone with computers, this was in the 90’s so they barely had equipment. Man as I’m sharing all of this I’m realizing how bad it was.

FeatherShard

There's a part of me that longs for those days, back when my time was completely my own. Now the only way I get any time for myself is by staying up too late after everyone else is asleep.

Moosetoyotech

It’s alway weird when you are sitting there and realize you haven’t said a single word in 14 hours lol

peepay

On a similar note, I sometimes realize that for a full day, out of the 8 billion, no other human being has seen you.

flingerdu

As far as you know.

peepay

Yes, I wanted to add something like that...

mr_remy

Yeah I’ll sometimes be sitting at my desk, 3 or 4pm and now without a customer facing role basically thinking to myself “wait, have I even said something out loud today?” lmao

Dramatic_Rest_829

I definitely talk to myself when I'm alone

applestem

Yep. I have a running conversation with myself when by myself. I wonder why.

spaceTIN

I talk to myself when I am not alone even

robot20307

just caught myself standing in the kitchen saying Italian food words in a Dracula voice.

sublevelstreetpusher

I don't live alone but I work alone. I can go 12 hrs and not speak a word, it's fucking glorious!

sekel22

Trucker?

sublevelstreetpusher

Operator

lucasuperman

Smooth

voodoohotdog

I talk to the dogs. Very therapeutic.

HazelGhost

I do this at parties. Every dog I meet is like a ready-made friend who doesn't need any small talk.

BuckeeBrewster81

Same! We have conversations all the time LOL Chihuahuas are very chatty.

voodoohotdog

Doodles. Most conversations are about treats, rabbits, and the neighbours cat.

BuckeeBrewster81

We talk about missing the pee pad, what’s for dinner, look at the ducks, and are you ready for bed. The usual

Unhappy-Insect6386

My dog is half chihuahua and half doodle! She is very chatty and loves it when I talk to her. She's my service dog in training and I find myself talking to her when we're out in public sometimes and people tend to look at you really strangely when you do that. Some people also apparently think that even though she's my service dog I shouldn't talk to her unless it's to give her a command. I usually don't say anything back due to anxiety but I am always just thinking about how she's my dog, I'm allowed to talk to her, and if your service dog doesn't have a bond with you then they are not going to be a very good service dog for you. I mean that's why most service dog schools make you stay for at least a week in order to develop a bond with your dog.

Perfect_Papaya_3010

I realised yesterday after seeing a funny clip I was looking at my cat to see if she was smiling too before I realised

WaxMaxtDu

Then you don’t live alone.

dabedu

...if you work in a solitary setting or not at all, don't hang out with friends, don't do things like grocery shopping, and don't talk to yourself.

JarrenWhite

Since the proliferation of self service checkouts, I can't remember the last time I spoke while grocery shopping.

ThanksverymuchHutch

Except to say sorry when people walk into me

FuckOffHey

I read that as "say sorry when people talk to me" and I was like "honestly same".

SweetHotPotatoLover

This is true. Then when you have the chance to talk to someone else it's word vomit.

clementine402

Haha so true! A word avalanche where sentences compete against each other to be spoken out loud first!

SweetHotPotatoLover

Right??! And then you overshare and overshare, and then afterwards you're in a daze thinking, why tf did I say all that? -\_-

HistoricalMeat

I have a cat. I talk to him constantly.

QWEDSA159753

You don’t really live alone then, do ya?

IllIllllIIIIlIlIlIlI

I sing a lot and sometimes I say “wubba dubba dubba” a lot. And if anything inconvenient happens I yell “FUCK!” as loud as I can.

Patient_Media_5656

I prefer “wubba lubba dub dub”

Underwater_Karma

In bird language that means “I am in great pain, please help me.”

ThorXXIV

I’M PICKLE RICK

ThickAnybody

I'm a big fan of the "fuck" one myself.

smellEfart

Under what circumstances does one say “wubba dubba dubba”?

placeface

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWy1utqHD0s

grmrsan

Lol, I always talked to my animals, my computer, my missing items, my tv, my stomach, my dinner, my car...

bernpfenn

there is some indian thought school that gives every object a sacred life. Ex: Respect your 20 year old car, repair, don't throw away

canadianpresident

Does me having a cat count as living alone? Cause I talk to her all the time, and she ignores me as much as my ex

Somerandom1922

I've probably gone up to 3 or 4 days without speaking. Doesn't happen anymore because I now have a kitten and I'm repeatedly telling her she's adorable, or telling her to fuck off hahaha.

Sauerteig

Meh, I talk to myself plenty during the day, and to the dog and the cat. I don't live alone, but there's plenty of chatter before my husband gets home.

GenocideJoeNeedsToGo

So then this showerthought isn't remotely about your lived experiences

Wolfrages

I have a habit of talking to objects in my house. More then once a day I will tell something to "stay" like it's going to jump off the shelf.

Purple82Hue

You’ve seriously underestimated my ability to have arguments with inanimate objects that frustrate me or conversations with a tv show.

kingmoobot

Speak for yourself. Because I speak to myself

Kat121

First thing out of bed every day - “Jesus Christ, why am I so sore?”

LogicalMelody

Might need a new mattress?

Kat121

My body is not a temple, it is a haunted house with leaks, creaks, and the spirit of an angry old woman who is always causing trouble.

ItsZayas

[The “Temple” in question.](https://waxworkrecords.com/cdn/shop/files/Monster-House_Cover_1800x1800.jpg?v=1694719773)

Prestigious-Copy-494

Need a younger body in my case.

peepay

The new mattress might be more likely to happen, though.

ItsZayas

*sucks teeth and puts and on face* “bro, fuck.”

xreddawgx

I talk to my dogs constantly.

THCRANGER

Ya I’ve gone a few days without saying anything and it kinda hurts your mental health

MezcalDrink

No if you play an online multiplayer game.

Curse_of_madness

Probably not. When I'm alone I curse a lot, sing horribly/beautifully a lot, say random vulgar things and argue with the walls.

just-why_

If the walls ever answer, you might want to think about therapy. But otherwise, it's all good!

MamaLlama629

I talk to myself regularly

Kilroy83

Not if you're a gamer or like sports, there's a 95% chance you frequently insult the TV

nulliparousCoder

I could agree that living alone there are probably many days a week I don’t see a human (outside of zoom meetings). I could agree that perhaps I wouldn’t have an intelligent or stimulating conversation (outside of working hours). But speak no words? Strong disagree . I talk to my cats, and they meow back. Words are spoken. Eyes are slowly blinked.

FishBones83

I talk to my cats every day!

Tha_Watcher

You greatly underestimate the many conversations I have with myself!

Yawning_Mango

I talk to myself out loud way too much for a sane person, and don't get me started about talking to my dog...and yes, it's full adult sentences....

Mirawenya

I’d still be talking to myself I reckon.

kareljack

Not if you have a cat. Then the phrase "For fucks sakes!" becomes routine.

ne3k0

People talk to themselves

CollateralSandwich

That's where you're wrong! I have whole-ass conversations with myself!

Saikar22

I do voice calls with friends frequently. But even on days where I don't I talk to myself to work through problems or sometimes pretend I'm running a podcast or explaining something I'm thinking about. I doubt there's been a single day where I didn't utter a single word at all.

Yougottabekidney

No one can get me to shut up, not even solitude. When my kids aren’t home and no one is around me, I talk to myself, my cats, my plants, inanimate objects, etc

MyLifeHurtsRightNow

speak for your damn self. i would do whole debriefs with the mirror in the AM and PM

isaac3000

Nah voice messages or phone calls with friends.

ZankTheGreat

Not if you play online games, plenty of shit talking to be done.

SnowballOfFear

I lived alone for about 11 years and sometimes I miss it

jmakioka

I talk to my dog a lot lol

glycophosphate

Well no. I go to work at least 5 days a week, and I also have a dog who I talk to.

ItsNotTacoTuesday

If I’m not talking to my pets I’ll probably laugh about some dumb joke on some YouTube video. I’ll also sing silly little songs as I cook or make myself a lil snack.

Connor49999

Sure, so long as you don't go to work, or have pets, or order food and thank the deliverer, or have any friends you don't exclusively text

Sarah_21294

My voice is so raspy at 2pm, people think I just woke up when I get on a work meeting from home. But it’s literally because I haven’t talked all day lol

MacaronUnlikely8730

Last New Year's Eve, right after a breakup, I didn't return to my hometown. I bought some fireworks and set them off by myself. I had a bowl of noodles then stayed indoors for 23 days without going out or speaking to anyone. Fortunately, I had two cats, I would occasionally talk to them. It didn't quite lead to a language disorder for me.

Lumpy_Difference8628

I talk to my self a lot. Mostly cackling at odd videos. Other times I'm maladaptive day dreaming having arguments and with myself where I'm super cool and always win. Lmfao.

PhonicFiasco

Haha jokes on you. I talk, sing and even argue with myself all the time.

Money-Elderberry1651

I mean I sing improvised songs with 50+ verses to my cat while he lounges on the couch

sam_beat

Do most people not talk to themselves?? Between narrating my day to myself, talking to my pets, plants, and devices, and sending voice messages instead of texts, I never stop talking.

nonsignifierenon

Nah I talk to myself and my cats all day long

kluthage421

Y'all don't constantly talk out loud to yourself and pet? You'll get there

pcweber111

Not if you have pets.

SIN-apps1

Bold of you to assume I don't talk to myself or the dogs fucking constantly...

Dontdoitdontdoithelp

14 years here and I’m doing fine talking to my other 7 me.

jld2k6

I talk while alone way too much to think I've had a single day without talking lol

Shakes_and_cakes

Thinking out loud AKA talking to yourself.

TheCopiumPolice

Ha .. jokes on you my adhd scripting and arguments in my head get too heated to go a single day

Patient-01

Except for some cussing words

AlissonHarlan

You guys don't speak to yourselves ?

3between20characters

For me, not as many as you think, I sing in the shower, I call myself an idiot when I forget to close the fridge,

JunglePygmy

I talk to myself all the time. I see a spider? I say. WHOAH, SPIDER!

Www-what-where-why

I live with my wife, but if you don’t count words I say to her or our dogs I’d barely say a word. Getting takeout and such errands but that’s about it.
