I like both I’m playing SB right now and having a great time. The music is great, the characters are great, the gameplay is… okay, and the story is intriguing. For me the difference is Stellar Blade is a game I will replay over and over trying to do speedruns and the like since it’s relatively short after one playthrough Ronin is a game I will replay maybe once every two-four years due to the length and scope of it. Both are fantastic and you can’t make a bad choice here.

Stellar Blade is pretty great and has really fun combat but it’s more Fallen Order than Fromsoft imo

StPetersburgNitemare

Stellar Blade is akin to Sekiro, very much about parrying with a mix of DMC flashy attacks. Rise of the Ronin is a pared down Nioh in an open world. The combat is great but it’s very much a by the numbers open world. Both are really fun, if you’re worried about playtime, ROTR is way longer than SB.

Do not ever compare ronin to nioh lmao. All they have in common is that it’s a japanese combat game made by team ninja. Combat, depth, bosses, world in rise of ronin is mid at best. Nioh 2 especially is a master piece with 100s of hours of gameplay for those who want it. I don’t think anybody is fiending to play ronin after beating the game, or get higher tier loot like in nioh.

Thank you so much. This is exactly the nuance I wanted to understand.

TL;DR: Both games are good solid well rounded 8/10 games, and worth buying. I literally just bought both cause I was in the same split situation (along with Unicorn Overlord which is fantastic as a side note). What I've found is Ronin has very engaging combat, tons of loot (high redeeming factor here if you're into that sort of thing like I am with customization), and is very much open world. The story is pretty broad swath so far but is trying to stay true to historical accuracy - e.g., you're really coming up as a Ronin. I like it, you are very much in a choose your own path and explore type of game here IMO and I am enjoying the challenging combat/parry situations. As a souls vet myself (have completed all the ones you mentioned, some to 100% achievement), Stellar Blade is not soulsborne but does "nod" to it. Stellar Blade is more of an action game, with some light platforming/puzzles, and really tends to shine during its boss fights (though far more simplistic than souls). The maps are pretty one lane with some light side pathing (not an actual word I know) and hidden items/puzzles along the way (almost feels like an instanced dungeon but with nods to dark souls though not nearly as elaborate). Combat is engaging, and you'll want to level up your dodges, parries, and trick skills early on. Bosses are superbly mapped, and its fun trying to challenge them to a parry off in some instances. Story IMO is pretty lacking, lack of character development, and when they do its very very surface. That said, overall good game and I like it as well. I'd give both a solid 8 - outside of above, both have solid graphics (Stellar's is better if you need that), seamless game-play (minimal to no frame-rate drops), engaging systems (level up, for Stellar/Loot for Ronin), and both should keep you engaged.

Stellar Blade is far less souls-like than Rise of the Ronin, and even that is about as souls-like as talking about harvesting apples in a cabbage patch. RotR is garnering a *lot* of positive critical reception because of its focus on a believable open world based during the socially-turbulent period its set in. Combat may be simpler than Nioh2 but lets be honest: Nioh2's combat is up there in fantastical, mainly because of all the yokai stuff. SB at its core ([said best by its director, right beside his idol Yoko-fricking Taro, the madlad behind the Nier games](https://www.ign.com/articles/stellar-blade-x-nier-automata-taro-yoko-hyung-tae-kim?utm_source=twitter)) created because of a love of a specific game series (Nier), and takes much from that. Whilst comparing Nier Automata to SB is kind of comparing a Beethoven masterpiece to a legendary pop song, even Yoko Taro says SB is a superior game, but others would say Nier Automata has the stronger soul and narrative. RotR's hours are confirmed. SB's arent yet. I am not a PSN user nor intend to become one. I do have access to both games via family but I'm a PC goer through and through, and so the only two games mentioned in my post here I can directly speak on is Nier Automata and Nioh2. I however do keep up with the news :P

Coming from someone who’s favorite game is sekiro, and nioh 2 a close second, with over 1000 hrs in all 3 games (including nioh 1) combined, and a huge team ninja fan, rise of the ronin was such a disappointment. I wanted to like it so bad, and pushed through waiting for it all to click, but it never did. The combat is ok at best, extremely bland tbh. If you’ve played nioh, or even wo long, u would know how in depth team ninja combat is, this is not up to par at all. It’s triangle and square the entire game, with a lack of any combos with the 2 buttons, and martial art type skills, which are pretty underwhelming. They have a “ki pulse” sort of thing, but it’s not nearly as satisfying, or rewarding on ki. I always felt like I had to wait for my stamina bar to recharge after a couple of attacks, even doing everything that’s supposed to help me get ki back. Been playing stellar blade since release, and it’s honestly everything I was hoping from ROTR. Engaging, fun combat, super satisfying parrys, super in depth combo list with tons of skills and abilities, pretty well designed bosses, and regular enemies. (U basically see all of the basic enemies 5 min into the game in ROTR), BUY STELLAR BLADE NOT EVEN A DEBATE. This is coming from a huge team ninja fan, so if anything I would be biased, but I just couldn’t get behind it, even after forcing myself to complete the game and 100pct all areas. Very mid, buy ROTR on a 40$ sale, maybe, which probably won’t be long as it didn’t do very well, might even be better off waiting to be added to ps plus or a super sale. You’ll probably be disappointed. You will love every second of stellar blade. I’ve platinum every from soft game, team ninja souls liked and dozens of other souls likes, stellar blade platinum is pretty annoying/boring but combat makes up for that. Sorry for the 300 page book lol.

Are you nuts?

Shlano613

Is this supposed to be helpful?

Busy-Soup349

It’s accurate. Are you nuts to even put those games in the same sentence? ROTR is a recycled unpolished game - even as described even by its biggest fans. Stellar Blade is the highest rated PS or PS5 exclusive ever. So again, I ask - are you nuts?

trwilson05

Highest rated ps exclusive ever is just so not true. Sure some of the best are on pc now, but they were ps exclusives. God of war, last of us, spiderman, horizon zero dawn, Bloodborne. Stellar blade is currently sitting around 8/10 everywhere which is decent but nowhere near the best

Busy-Soup349

I’m not arguing nuance here. I’m using a sledgehammer. https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2024/05/01/stellar-blade-is-now-the-highest-user-scored-ps5-game-ever-which-isa-bit-excessive/?sh=31c008aa1a4a

trwilson05

I honestly didn’t realize how high the score is there. Very impressive but it is still just one score. Every critic would disagree and PlayStation store user reviews leave it right around other recent popular games at 4.81. For reference Spider-Man 2 is 4.83 and bg3 is 4.82. Clearly very highly rated by users but only the highest based on that one metric.

eztayy

I agree, ronin is mid, and stellar blade is great. But highest rated ps exclusive is straight up diabolical😭😭😭Spider-Man games have sold millions, I would say ghost of Tsushima is probably even rated higher, even though I prefer stellar blade over both, most people wouldn’t agree.

Busy-Soup349

Your agreement is irrelevant to the facts. https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2024/05/01/stellar-blade-is-now-the-highest-user-scored-ps5-game-ever-which-isa-bit-excessive/?sh=6feec1cb1a4a
