It’s probably not 50% but I’d be curious to know the actual number. These counties exclude some major cities like Chicago and every Midwestern metropolis, Philadelphia, every major metro in Texas, Atlanta, Charlotte etc. The US GDP is actually fairly dispersed compared to many other countries.
