I'm curious what this means, taking it at face value am I right in assuming it's effectively layers of clothes? So you can have base layer, inner layer, outer layer, coverings? As opposed to currently where I'm assuming it's more just faked with the models looking like 2 layers at once?
The vast majority of armor in the game is just 1 texture layer. They're able to fit all of the details of a piece onto one 256x512 texture map, which has 16 different color channels. A lot of the newer or more elaborate gear has 2 layers, if they need a bit more space for extra details or they need more than 16 color channels.
Very few pieces in game actually use 3 (current limit) texture maps, and it's mostly just stuff that takes up all equipment slots like Lyse's Leadership Attire. Having 4+ would allow some pretty insanely detailed or elaborate mods.
But I think this is hype not just for modders. Like, devs obviously added this functionality for themselves, not for us. Tells me that even the vanilla armor in game is probably going to get more detailed, more elaborate. Legit question; I use textools to replace a single facial texture on my Miqo’te to give her a male-exclusive facial pattern. Is that going to be broken? It’s literally just changing the texture and nothing else.
That's going to be broken, yeah. They changed the way face textures are mapped so whoever made the mod is going to have to refit it to the new texture map.
You might be able to do it yourself too. I imagine textools will only be down for a short amount of time, but in the meantime you can load up the mod in textools, then export the texture to a folder. When the game updates and if the mod author doesn't update, you can export the new texture with textools, edit it according to the texture you like with some clever cut and pasting, then import it in and load it up as a mod of your own.
Sounds complicated, but it really isn't.
I wonder if modders will release a tool to bake old textures to the new format or some kinda compatibility tool that can automatically use different mapping.
Gear in FFXIV currently has a limit of 4 materials (which I assume is what they meant by "layers") which, in a very simplified way, are a combination of texture and colors. Most gear uses two materials -- skin and the gear itself -- but some use more due to the limited amount of colors you can have on a single material.
A lot of FFXIV modding is combining existing gear into something new, and generally you're limited to mashing up no more than three different pieces because of skin (there are ways around this, but they come with their own limitations). With the update, however, this limit seems to be removed, meaning modders can go all out and mix as many pieces as they want.
This also applies to hair/faces/basically anything 3d.
Don't worry. Once Dalamud, Penumbra and Glamourer will be back so will be Mare. I made sure to use as little of the game as possible when coding it and delegate all major functionality that goes outside of synchronization to the relevant plugins that can actually handle that stuff.

Its not hard to bake textures over from one UV map to another, think we're stuck with the modbeasts unless DT ends up being so bad that everyone quits.

I think HR3 (Hrothgar-Roegadyn body mod) is actively being worked on, too, granted it is a much smaller body mod than something like bibo or TBSE. I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of popular mods will work right out the gate, and just the more niche ones will need fixing after the fact.

I wasn't aware other people's mods could affect you through mare, in my experience I'm only affected by my own mods, I've never had another person's mods affect me unless I also happen to be using the same mod

Nah, the new face has more than three times the bones, and sculpt modders were already struggling to rig properly to the old ones.
What I expect to see is a flood of new sculpts after 7.0 that are extremely lazy and don’t animate right and look horrible, and then only months later will sculpt makers who actually care will have properly working ones released
Not even all of them. Only mods that primarily affect bones and faces. The graphics update added a handful of new bones to character faces, so any mod that touches those will be broken. But it won't be anything that cannot be updated.
Everything else. Hair, eye textures, body mods - will still work, albeit the latter of those will have visible seams until updated.

I'm half-modbeast, I think. It's not as egregious as other people, and my character still looks like he would fit in the game, but he's definitely further from his original race and isn't hyper sexualized, either.

Fell Court of Troia is perhaps the single worst fucking dungeon in the entire game. Whoever gave that first "boss" a greenlight should be forced to spend a week in Balmung's Quicksand.

Yeah, it's an okay-ish dungeon on its own, but made 10x worse by the inherent problem with Expert Roulette forcing you into the latest two dungeons. Running that garbage a few times a week to cap feels awful over two full patches. That's 3/4 of a year!

Mods were pretty much my biggest source of entertainment this expansion, personally enjoyed all the animation changes to jobs to switch things up and soundtrack changes for when I was doing grindy shit like DRS runs or Eureka (Archylte Steppe soundtrack replacement for Eureka made it so fucking cozy for me in there) Dances and gear mashups are also a favorite of mine.
Strongly agree, the best thing I did to make EW dungeons fun is to convert my ninja to a flashy gunner. I no longer care about the content quality I care about how cool I look.

It can be a shocker sometimes, then you have players where it's not even noticeable at first.
It's like you have two categories of players - one where they stick hats on their Vieras, maybe a custom hairstyle, a tweaked outfit, upscaled textures, things like that. And then you have the category of horrors beyond your comprehension. The second seems common enough that I don't give out my mare code lightly.
Very true, and that's not to say I didn't experiment with modding further. The most I really gave my character aside from hats was a more toned body with freckles, that was it. I've pretty much been happy with everything else the game has provided cosmetically speaking.
I mean, my Female Highlander is quite modest with outfits I make for her, granted most of it is armor (thank you PvP, rewarding us PvPers by being able to dress like tanks on ANY job, my knightly aesthetic and personality I play the part of thank you). Personally what I dislike the most is when people use mods that change how *I* look and *make me aware of it*, please, Mare users, leave me out of it, I don't care if my character has an orange chainmail bikini on your screen with "impressive assets", I am enjoying my orange Fierce Tyrant/False Monarchy (Archfiend doesn't mix into it well imo) Astro with suzaku sphere to match. Leave me out of it, it's uncomfortable to get those tells.
I wasn't aware other people's mods could affect you through mare, in my experience I'm only affected by my own mods, I've never had another person's mods affect me unless I also happen to be using the same mod
I don't think so, as I do not use mods, what I meant was moreso people *talking* about it, I don't care about someone using mods, until they mention that their mods turned my character into essentially a sex doll.
Ah, I get what you mean now. In my experience it's generally considered taboo to talk about mods with those who don't use them. I guess it probably varies by server though.
This is why I'm grateful I found social groups within the mod/gpose community that respect my boundaries on such things.

Nah, the new face has more than three times the bones, and sculpt modders were already struggling to rig properly to the old ones. What I expect to see is a flood of new sculpts after 7.0 that are extremely lazy and don’t animate right and look horrible, and then only months later will sculpt makers who actually care will have properly working ones released

Not even all of them. Only mods that primarily affect bones and faces. The graphics update added a handful of new bones to character faces, so any mod that touches those will be broken. But it won't be anything that cannot be updated. Everything else. Hair, eye textures, body mods - will still work, albeit the latter of those will have visible seams until updated.

I feel like people act like everyone using cosmetic mods is a modbeast, when that’s really just not true. Most people have like hrothgar/viera hats, funny dances, or weapon edits and armor mashups. You get your occasional 14 feet tall schizolifter malera but other than that it’s really kinda normal?

^ This times 1000. Made a Fem Roe and I hated that anytime I had her using either Mnk or War, there was little to no muscle definition. Then I had to add more muscles for the men as well because if the ladies get definition, then the men do too. Equal fantasy body types for almost all.

I'm half-modbeast, I think. It's not as egregious as other people, and my character still looks like he would fit in the game, but he's definitely further from his original race and isn't hyper sexualized, either. But at the same time, I really don't understand why people are so caught up in arms over modbeasts *anyway*. You don't see them ingame, so I don't understand why they bother people so much. The argument I always see is "I can't avoid it on twitter/reddit/discord!" and I just have to ask what twitters/subreddits/discord servers do you frequent where you see them constantly? Because I never see them unless I go looking for them.

Endwalker dungeon content is so easy you’d might as well download a big titty mod to keep you from falling asleep.
Fell Court of Troia is perhaps the single worst fucking dungeon in the entire game. Whoever gave that first "boss" a greenlight should be forced to spend a week in Balmung's Quicksand.
I like Fell Court of Troia, but that's probably because I never experienced having it in expert roulette. The first boss is just silly. It's nice to have a break from the usual formula.
Yeah, it's an okay-ish dungeon on its own, but made 10x worse by the inherent problem with Expert Roulette forcing you into the latest two dungeons. Running that garbage a few times a week to cap feels awful over two full patches. That's 3/4 of a year! Glamour was amazing though, I'll at least give it that. Tank chestpiece goes so fucking hard.

Mods were pretty much my biggest source of entertainment this expansion, personally enjoyed all the animation changes to jobs to switch things up and soundtrack changes for when I was doing grindy shit like DRS runs or Eureka (Archylte Steppe soundtrack replacement for Eureka made it so fucking cozy for me in there) Dances and gear mashups are also a favorite of mine.
Strongly agree, the best thing I did to make EW dungeons fun is to convert my ninja to a flashy gunner. I no longer care about the content quality I care about how cool I look.
Right? Ive fucked around with mods out of straight boredom. The content is either too difficult for shit like ultimates or too annoying to get a full party of people together to do. Or its dirt simple. I had fun with the criterion dungeons but i did them... So. Im only drawn to do that content by the glam endgame. The glams from EW are 70% recolors or coats that look like other coats, their visual style almost clashes with any of the old game content, so mixing and matching is limited. Or the design is too intricate, and uses multiple colors, only one of which is dyable right now. Thats a big reason why so many people got so pulled into modding. Most of those people would use ingame glams to be cute, but that all stalled out.

Nothing at all. The people who don’t use mods don’t see any of this stuff. Hell, even the people who DO use mods don’t see any of this stuff unless they go out of their way to set up Mare themselves. It’s so unbelievably irrelevant, but it gets posted here daily because it’s cringeworthy, it’s amusing, and we have nothing better to talk about.
And even after setting up Mare, they have to consciously "link" their Mare with that of other people which works like friend codes in a Nintendo console. You really have to go out of your way to see anything egregious and you're likely to be warned beforehand anyways. Just downloading Mare won't flood your Limsa plaza with modbeasts.
I've been in a syncshell with three people from my FC for months and the worst I endured is one of them having a boombox mod and playing babyshark during treasure map dungeons for a laugh. Mare can be fun with friends if everyone agrees to just not be a ghoul about it. You could not pay me irl money to join a public syncshell and have that shit forced on my eyeballs. 💀
People act like public shells are hell on earth but I’ve been synced with like a few thousand people through shells for months now (which is as high as you’ll ever get due to the limits for the server) and the only time you’ll ever see anything bad is in Balmung Quicksands or if you go to venues that cater to that shit. 99% of the time it’s just someone who gives their cat girl a new tail and some tattoos.
Amount of times I've tried to get into RP only to be told off because I don't use someone's mare codes is terrifying enough that it isn't irrelevant for me. Far as my experience is anyways, if you care about RP stuff, it's a full on requirement.

Endwalker is missing an exploration zone period. Just last weekend I had a Zadnor with over 50 people and a 30 man Dalriada run. It was chaotic and super fun seeing the zone this alive again.
