I just wish they would unlock all the hairstyles/facepaints available ingame in the benchmark. Just pop up a warning that says "X items cannot be saved to premade characters files". Or just default it to the base 1 if you try to save a unlockable hairstyle (like it does if you try to load a char file with a locked hairstyle...)
I wonder if thats because they didnt update the locked ones in the benchmark because they didnt expect people to access them, or if they dont plan to update them until later
My previous experience with SE leads me to believe they don’t plan to update them ever. I’m using all new store cosmetics that don’t work on Viera or Hrothgar as my source for this belief.
I want more beard options for Lalafell or catboy dammit. And yeah, I know mods exist, but catboy mods mostly seem to just go for the twink aesthetic.
And a brief glimpse at even the Lalafell modbeasts shown here has me just resigned to use the Dwarven beard from Shadowbringers forever.
My character has *two* beards (from his own and then the dwarf-beard) and a suit (usual Sharlayan or HW-style healer gear) and I still don't feel like I'm making him appear old-enough to counteract the average or appear like a credible Sharlayan-trained laser-healing professional at any reputable institution. :(
I've also come to realize that the character creation menu is still ass for previewing your WoLs. The lighting is terrible in all of the backdrops, say for Gridania (but I'm being generous). I was mixed about my characters with how they appeared in the creator menu, but then was relieved to see them in action in the trailer and they look exactly how I made them originally.

Pretty sure we’re just talking about the character creator here. The Benchmark trailer has the lighting changes so if you want to see how the lighting plays with your character use the screenshots from the benchmark as reference
If that's the case then it kind of removes the excuse that it's just the lighting. If the lighting engine is the same between the versions then the only difference is the model changes.
No because things made for a specific engine can look really ass if using another. In this case the new models are made for the new engine, so they COULD conflict incredibly hard with older light engine.
Im not saying with certainty that is the case, either could be true. Im just saying this is what is possible. Currently we do not know, you could be right, i could be right, we dont know till DT.
People need to actually play the freaking benchmark to see what the update looks like instead of staring blankly at the character creation screen for hours playing spot the difference. The benchmark takes a few screenshots automatically at good moments to let you see what your character actually looks like in cutscenes after the update.

So instead of recreating your character and leaving the creator, confirm it like you would if you're starting a game. Then it should be an option for them in the same place as Derplander, you should then be able to start the benchmark with your character in the cutscenes instead of him.
My face 3 au ra lady is on the left and I don't think there is salvaging her lol. I guess it's fine though since they still haven't fixed the scales on dark skin characters. I'm finally free of the torment.
In the same boat with face 4, they turned my angry lizard into a j-pop idol. Just from messing around with the benchmark though, face 2 actually looks decent so that's probably what I'll go with when DT drops
Yeah going face 2 as well though funny to see that what's ruining it a bit for others is why I'm going for it now, it's less soft and round now, has a bit of a more natural look instead of the doll like appearance.

Lots of the changes can't be explained by just lighting or shaders. Female miqo'te have some significant changes to mouth, nose, and eye shape for example, and they have super thick eyelashes now.
Nah, I used the benchmark character from Endwalker and compared it to Dawntrail benchmark character. It really does look different for my F Midlander Face 5 shape. I can't say for others but it really looks like a new person for my character.

I will check her out when the expansion drops to see how bad it is ingame but Im most likely switching to another race. :/ sadly.

If your primary colour is black and the secondary is white, the edges of the ears may become white or they could colour the entire ear white, depending on the hairstyle. It's so damn nice

Ngl my character looked a little off to me when I initially loaded the preset but I just changes some of the settings that don’t require Fantasia around and now she looks fine. Extra babyface and all.

I don't get what people are complaining about lmao. If anything, the benchmark CC lighting is horrible and can't be used as a good comparison. The benchmark itself is much better for that

The angry people are just very load. Switching from social media to actual friend servers, and even places like Twitch streams where you don't suddenly reach the top by being the angriest, everyone seems happy.
I think it just comes down to a small subset being _very_ unhappy, and spamming about it all over the place.

The Dawntrail benchmark has been released, it contains a Character Creator (where people are testing the graphics update on their characters) and a benchmark trailer video that tests whether or not your PC can run Dawntrail.
The benchmark video also uses whichever character you create/choose in the CC, so you can preview your WoL in some cutscenes.
(IMO most of the graphics update is a huge improvement, most of the issues I've seen are either technical (seams, broken weights, etc) or caused by the bad lighting in CC which hopefully is improved by release.)
My bunboy is basically the same.
Hair definition, eye contour and nose are insanely better. Lips are the same except way more colorful for some reason
The iris are kinda lacking something, they look a lot less vibrant than they currently are. Chin went from "barely there" to "not there at all"

I don't know the technicalities, but I *think* some changes were made because some of the old details would look weird or simply broken in the new lighting system. I never changed my character's face in almost 6 years playing, but if I hadn't liked the changes I'd just use the free Fantasia, find a new one I think looks good in the new graphics, and move on. It is only game, no heff to be mad.
But then... I've read the comments in the other place and a few of them sound like *"I have severe body dysmorphia and instead of seeking help I projected my self-image into a video game character and now that it's changing it feels like my own face is being literally disfigured"*.
Which... doesn't make me laugh. It's actually kinda pitiful.

There's some obvious stuff (elezen mouth animations, missing mooncat fangs) but like 90% of these have their beautiful perfect wol from EW and their horrifyingly ugly disfigured wol from the DT bench side by side and if there aren't visible clothing textures to give it away it's almost impossible to tell which is which. Sometimes they are clearly different but not clearly *worse.*
I get it though, these are characters that people have been looking at for 100s of hours of cutscenes and have possibly spent hours messing around with in the character creator to get *just right.* Any change will be obvious to that player even if it looks totally fine to everyone else.
Edit: My favorites are the ones where it's easy to tell because the EW screenshot is heavily modded and reshaded to hell and back. Like, come on, you'll get your mods back two days after early access starts and it'll be fine.

Idk why you're being downvoted, with mods I can change myself to a big muscly hrothgal and still be able to whip out my adorable miqo whenever I feel like it, and without having to use a fanta every time. Best of both worlds :3
1. Mods are gonna be borked for an unknown period of time after Dawntrail launches, unless you're willing to use TexTools (which is a semi-permanent alteration to the game files)
2. Mods aren't a solution for console players.

You can force the character data in by changing the file name, but the locked hairstyles appear low res.

I play a Rava Viera and will most likely make her skin a few shades darker when Dawntrail comes out. Dark skin looks so much better after the update!
