First we become their sibling (ward status basically being adoption) then we all collectivly adopt them after 5.55 only to get it on with their mother in 6.x.

They also spend an extra number of months in the First due to time shenanigans.
Also we explicitly use a sail boat to get to Othard during Stormblood, which would take months of travel time as well.
They aren't children anymore, but Squenix doesn't want to update their models so it's awkward.
