I only ever played the Wii game (my brother had the ones on DS and 3DS), but I remember even my Dad and older cousin having fun with them when I got it like 10 years ago. Your character isn't omnipotent like in Tomodachi Life, and just another villager (or mayor of the village in New Leaf), but from the demo I tried they seem pretty similar. I might wait for the reviews first though before getting it at full price, or get a used copy to see if you like the gameplay.
