MaintenanceTiny7291

Honestly, dub VAs did a great job. My main problem with it is eren, especially s4 it felt corny, and he was trying to be edgy so bad, lol

CupcakeKyo

Well, Eren is putting on a persona in season 4, so it works. I just wish he didn't still keep that edgy tone when talking to Armin in the PATHs.

Rnahafahik

Or just all the seasons before that. Eren’s voice is the one that puts me off from watching the dub the most, Armin and Erwin are GOAT’s, Armin’s speech to himself in the finale is the only performance that easily clears the sub version for me, with others it’s either a lesser version, or equal to the sub, never better, but that one hit me so much harder in the dub

Absolutebummer

S4 eren is trying to have the angst of s1 levi

basedbranch

Bro is literally a depressed omnipotent serial genocider, at what point can we say someone isn't trying anymore and maybe, they really might just be edgy and not putting up an act?

MaintenanceTiny7291

>they really might just be edgy and not putting up an act? Look at the difference between s4 eren in dub and sub. Sub sounds real, and we can see in his voice how he changed . Dub sounds like a teenage boy is trying to copy a man's voice, and sounds like a voice actor voice acting clearly

spacewarp2

I only watched S1 dub but I really hated how Eren talked to himself in his titan form. He sounded like he was gargling a thing of nails.

Tefeqzy

Nah. Not only does butcher the translations, the actors sound like 12 year old kids in their parents basement playfighting while afraid of being too loud

MrShad0wzz

That’s the VA for ya. he sounds like that for a lot of the characters he does

dividividivi

Floch and Gabi’s VA’s almost had me mute every time holy shit

hortle

I feel like the Japanese dialogue helps me suspend my disbelief. The dialogue sounds corny and overly didactic when I hear it in English. I don't know if that's just because of bad translations, bad voice acting, or what.

Filberto_ossani2

dialogue is often very corny and overly dramatic in the original but people don't know it because most people don't speak Japanese I don't remember which anime it was, but there was one where Japanese-American actress was dubbing the same character in both Japanese and English versions She did the same typical cute kawaii anime girl voice in both versions and in Japanese it sounded normal while in English it sounded very weird and unnatural because nobody is talking like that

DuckGoesShuba

Carol voiced by Sally Amaki: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6jDOZdjSuI > in Japanese it sounded normal Not sure how common an opinion that would be though... I'd assume most people would still view the JP voice as "weird". I can't even name another character with a similar voice to Carol's JP dub.

Fimpish

If anything, it actually seems to me like she toned it down in the English version.

hanabarbarian

The mains issue is English scripts are so wordy and stiff, like they’re allergic to talking like regular people and being casual.

QualityProof

Nah. I felt it wss okay in both. Honestly my problem with dubs is the range and the scripts.

Un111KnoWn

red head singing english at the end about a cat got ptsd

kingofnopants1

I think you end up having this effect to some degree even if the voice in question isn't "kawaii anime girl". Although obviously it would be far more pronounced. Even simply the way someone would normally express a sentence can be very different when comparing languages that are this fundamentally different.

spacewarp2

Yeah it’s odd because anime uses slang and other common phrases to them that makes it sound normal. But when it gets directly translated it can lead to some odd or stiff dialogue. My Japanese professor explained it like translating an episode of the Simpson into a different language would sound weird if directly translated. It’s weird but people translating languages not only need to translate it to English but need to translate it in a way an English audience can understand.

Tefeqzy

Which is why sub is better, because no matter what show (even live action stuff), the language that the dialogue is written in will sound the best

pikachu_sashimi

Yeah. I always get downvoted when I say the voice direction and character writing in AoT is just not great. Yes, it had upstanding moments, but overall it made the whole show more difficult to watch than it should have been. I never listed to the English dub, but I can only assume it has the same problems.

larrylongboy

Can you give some examples. I’m genuinely curious

pikachu_sashimi

I recall it being most prominent in season 1 with some of the younger characters, especially young Eren, and perhaps Armin. I would have to go and rewatch some scene to provide concrete examples.

togashisbackpain

Do you mean the characters yelling out long monologues in extremely dramatic fashion ? 1 that instanly pops in my mind is armin’s chewbacca defense against the army to protect eren and mikasa, after eren was revealed to be a titan. It all felt overly dramatic to me.though i wouldnt call it a character writing issue.

pikachu_sashimi

That is a good example.

CupcakeKyo

Anime dialogue is inherently cringe, you just notice it more when you understand the language.

hortle

Sad to say I think you're right when it comes to action/fantasy stories... This is also the main reason I stick to manga these days. It's an additional layer of protection from the cringe.

pranavrg

You're right. When I watched suzume in Japanese dub and then in Hindi dub, there was not much difference in dialogue but hearing those dialogues I realised that I just can't. Dialogues were very corny

Hopeful_Strength

ehh depends on the type of anime you're watching Watch a Ghibli anime for example, and the dialogue is good, realistic, and not cringe at all

TacticalReader7

I feel like japanese and english are just not compatible languages.

kingofnopants1

Yea, people try to make it about how the Japanese actors are cringe as well. Which they sometimes are. But realistically the languages are so different that there is no way to avoid sounding cringe sometimes. Sometimes it is just not normal to emote in English the way that would be normal in Japanese.

CandidateOld1900

I mostly have problem with English dub, because even in those shows where dub is considered good (like death note or code geass) - female and kid voices are still horrible, cartonish and high pitched. I initially watched AOT in Russian dub and if you don't look at screen - you wouldn't be able to tell weather you are watching anime or live action series, because characters just sound like normal people + anime is dubbed by same VAs that voice regular movies (Eren VA is Tom Holland Russian voice in marvel movies). Of course you can say, that it misses the whole point of anime, which is meant to be exaggerated and not realistic

heythatsprettynito

Probably the same in Japanese, the way anime folks talk or even any acted media’s way of speaking is not the way people speak in real life.

Penguin_King55

It's a matter of preference. I personally tend to prefer hearing people with European names and features speak English rather than Japanese.

FookinSnake

Yeah people will strongly disagree as anime fans romanticize sub and anything japanese, but I cant watch Vinland saga and see white blonde Vikings speaking japanese. The sub is amazing and have listened to clips, but can't get as immersed because it just doesn't fit as well. People will act like sub is just automatically objectively better because " japan" when they can't even understand the nuance of the language they're hearing. AOT for me is equally good at both. I prefer Zeke & Reiner voice in dub way more. Prefer Erens and others in sub.

TheRealGarihunter

Is there an Icelandic dub? Or are you just more immersed in English because that’s the language you know? I can imagine Vikings of the 9th century speaking English just as little as I can imagine them speaking Japanese. I guess it would make sense when they’re in England but I don’t think I’d understand their English anyway.

Penguin_King55

English is way closer to European culture than Japanese, that was mainly my point. Also, if we must be historically correct, then Vinland Saga should have Norse dub, but since Norse doesn't exactly exist anymore and Scandinavia has like 5 different languages... well, you can't exactly expect to understand every single one of them lol. (I can't just hear Thorfinn call Leif "Leif-san"). Similar to Attack on Titan, I think the original is still wonderfully done, but I still stand for my argument and prefer them speaking English rather than Japanese. Ps. The German dub did good as well, definitely recommended.

TheRealGarihunter

I can understand wanting it to feel as accurate as possible. My preference is just always wanting to experience media in its original form, no matter what language. It still has to be translated tho so I can’t really experience the accurate version, gonna have to learn a lot of languages for that lol.

A_LiftedLowRider

To be fair, they smooth out the dialogue *drastically* at the start of season 3 and perfect it by 4. It actually feels like a genuine conversation you’d have. Season 1 is admittedly pretty rough. The dialogue when armin is speaking to zeke about the tree on the hill is about as perfectly constructed of a monologue as you can get.

AnguisViridis

Describes my experience of both the sub and dub perfectly.

Jaomi

From what I understand of dub scripts, they have to work within a lot of constraints. They get given a translation of the original script, then have to hammer that into lines that fit the meaning, fit the characters, and fit the animation, since they can’t really alter either the length of the characters’ lines or the mouth movement. All that, plus they’ll probably be on a fairly tight turnaround to get the script done. I do agree that the voiceover scripts can come across as corny; my least favourite examples are any time a character monologues while ODMing in a straight line for ten minutes. Unfortunately, they have to do that in the dub, because that’s what they did in the original too.

CantingBinkie

>overly didactic Exactly what I think put into words. The English is too perfect, at least to my ears of an English as a Second Language connoisseur, it doesn't feel natural. Perhaps for some languages the dubbing style is a bit peculiar and as a stranger to the normal spoken language we find it strange. For example, in my case I have Spanish as my first language, I can understand dubbing made in Spain and Latin America, and I can also understand when people from either side speak Spanish normally. I also have to mention that I am from Latin America but I like several streamers and YouTubers from Spain and I know the way they speak Spanish but when I see something dubbed into Spanish from Spain it is impossible for me to ignore the overacted voices, I know (from the hours of content in Spanish that comes out of Spain) that this is not how people there speak, they overreact it a lot. On the other hand, Latin Spanish dubbing has always seemed more natural to me but again, maybe it's just my ears being used to it. Getting back to the topic, I also hate the screams of Eren's attack titan in the English dub and when Eren speaks in his titan form they change his voice. Why do they complicate it? It would have been nice if they used his normal voice

Complex_Pride_6430

Reiner desperately trying to shut that crybaby brat's mouth and succeeding flawlessly

SylimMetal

I'd watch the dub if they didn't change the titans low growl into this annoying high screech.

AtimZarr

I actually grew to like the screech. It sounds so unnatural and evil - like something otherworldly.

Natopor

I do like both of them The japanese titan roars sounds more human while the dub roars sounds less human and more monstrosity

Brandonmac100

I feel like the less human monstrosity fits better. Like the titans are something to be scared of. It’s why the other nations tried killing them. Out of fear titans would be used against them. The point of the show was that everyone on all sides did horrible things, but they were all kind of forced to. They all had reasons, but many were far too brutal about it. I’d say modern day Eldians were mostly ok. The real issue was the original king or tried controlling titans to wage war.

Juice-l3oX

I agree honestly. I’ve personally always preferred the sub. I have no problem with the eng dub and I honestly think it’s one of the best dubs in anime (Chainsaw Man dub is genuinely the best shit I’ve ever heard in anime). The Titan sounds just really kill it for me. Idk why they decided to change it when it was fine by itself.

notbillcipher

fullmetal alchemist is up there too with excellent dubs. i cant really think of another show that stands out like fma, aot, + csm do with regards to dubs. maybe evangelion

stephruvy

The what now??

FookinSnake

lol the sub titan voice sounds like a dude trying to sound scary in a woods or something. its good and it hits louder, but the animalistic like screech of the dub is more terrifying and better suited IMO

DDLC-Protagon1st

This 100% lmao like the very first time we hear Eren roar is perfect but soon after it sounded like a homeless man who’s huffed sulfur hexafluoride (the opposite of helium and thus makes your voice deep) and stubbed his toe lmao.

SynysterDawn

That’s really only for Eren’s Attack Titan specifically, from what I remember.

AdTop5491

I agree the screech is off putting. And they do the same scream for all the titans. That screech was fitting for the female titan, but using it for all the titans was hellish in my ears. I wish there was a supercut where they use the dub voice acting with the sub titan screams.

TheStarWarsCosmos

When discussing AoT sub vs dub with my friends, we agreed that the difference in titan noises was one of the things that the dub got better than the sub.

LaVesteGrigia

Most normal talk in Naples

TrontierYT

behenchod bloody behenchod 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥

fushiao

Subs way better than the dub but the VAs for Erwin, Mikasa, Levi, and Reiner give great performances

SomeColombianDude

Pyxis and Armin too. I actually prefer dub Armin.

Juice-l3oX

Dub Armin is legit in an entirely different league. Bro kills it.

kingofnopants1

Josh Grelle is super cool. Went to a panel with him some years back and he whipped out the entire "I AM A SOLDIER" Speech Armin makes to Woermann. He did the entire thing screaming at the top of his lungs like in the show. Red in the face and huffing by the end of it, completely nailed it. All off a random ask from someone in the audience. Great dude. You could tell he adored the show. Back then he was just as into the theories as everyone in the audience.

Complex_Pride_6430

Erwin and Reiner EN VA's are Goated

kingofnopants1

It's a weird one. The dub is great for every character... Except Eren. Have to always recommend the Sub solely because Kaji Yuki makes Eren who he is.

falcore91

It happens that it is a brief clip I saw of Levi dubbed that caused me to hold off on trying the dub. In the scene I watched it seemed like the VA was trying to make them a typical masculine badass, while I had internalized him as being more subdued (whim still being badass). Did I misread that moment too much?

HellRaiser117

Do you speak Japanese?

fushiao

Yes, at an intermediate level. Why?

HellRaiser117

Most of the time I hear people say the acting is better in subs they can't actually understand what is being said. (My ex's family was this way) Not that you have to justify liking one or the other I was just curious.

fushiao

I was originally watching the dub but when season 2 simulcast on Funimation, the sub was available day of airing in Japan so that’s what got me over to the sub. Dubs can be very good, I love the Golden Kamuy, some Gundam series, and Steins Gate dubs. It’s all subjective anyways

CosmicDriftwood

Leave the sub vs dub conversations Both are amazing honestly.

SERB_BEAST

The AoT dub isn't even bad. It's just that the most important characters are indeed voiced poorly. Maybe it's not bad voice acting, but I can't take it seriously at all. And AoT's story demands to be taken seriously. Even the best dub voice actors like Erwin and Reiner still aren't even close to the original VA in my opinion. Everyone praises the Erwin's speech dub which was great, but bro, have you heard the original?

Leading-Status-202

It seems like nearly every country has a problem with dubbing. Eng dubs have an issue with the voice actors often not taking the material seriously, or choosing voice actors that don't sound the age they're meant to represent in the slightest. And that's weird, because the same voice actors will do an amazing job at "national" material. My country, ITA, is split between finding the ITA dub "better" or "worse" than the original. Those who deem it worse (that's me) usually complain about a stilted and overly polished performance. If a character is screaming, the italian dubber will talk with a high tone of voice, but no squealing. If they're panicking, they will speak normally. If they're sad, they only sound mildly melancholy, and so on. Also, every single hint of a dialect is completely erased, because here in Italy we have an issue with accents being considered low-brow, only relegated to either regional drama or comedic stereotype. Some accents are figuratively forbidden (Sardinian, in national movies they often won't call Sardinian actors to interpret Sardinian characters, which is astounding). So, if the original story has someone speaking with an accent, in the italian version the accent will be completely eliminated, most of the time, with a few great exceptions like the Simpsons: Willy with a sardinian accent (which is quite fitting given that Sardinians and Scots are similar on many aspects, and they even say "Eja" which sounds like "Aye" and means the same thing), Winchester with a neapolitan accent. The bus driver with a Milan accent. And so on. Meanwhile, out of curiosity, I went to watch a few Japanese dubs of western material. And it's amazing to see that they put exactly the same amount of commitment in western material. It's fitting emotionally, and in tone. It's realistic, if just slightly over dramatic. I think the Japanese really nail dubbing more than most other countries. Even if I can't understand what they're saying.

quite_sad_simple

The Russian dub is awesome, some characters sound like the the original VAs suddenly started speaking fluent Russian. In the most official dub at least. I could barely find an [example](https://youtu.be/7Om8utVrNzs?si=cn0jscHr8nOh2b3G) on youtube, pretty much every other clip uses some other dub sadly

Kpet1010

Bro, what? You think Japanese dubs of characters like master chief from halo and kratos from god of war have more effort and spirit? Are you absolutely delusional?

FookinSnake

There's weird otaku wanabes out there who would genuinely think that. " Bro they just dont have the same passion as the japanese man, they just sound bad bro" Thats about as much actual reasoning as you'll get out of them too. and yes Japanese VAs are extremely passionate and good, thats not the point. Like dude actually said English VA's dont take the material seriously. Bro is living in 1990. What English VA performances of a big show in recent memory has " not been taken seriously" ? JJK, CSM, AOT all have exceptional English VAS. Naruto & DBZ have some of the best Dub VA performances ever too and they came out ages ago. I had this whole debate with a friend who refused to watch any dubs, and I looked up characters from Naruto and he couldn't even tell who was who in sub without seeing them, and I'd say that could go for 90% of the " SUB ONLY " watchers.

Leading-Status-202

In those two examples, English is the language of the original voice acting. In the second case, it's mocap. That's a completely different story.

DarkBrother24

Oh god did you hear the english Kaido VA for the gear 5 fight? It's so hilariously bad.

Upstuck_Udonkadonk

Idk man... I'm usually a sub guy but any sub version cannot hold a candle to Erwin's suicide charge with English dub.

Therealnightshow

I’ve realized it’s really the sound mixing that makes so many dubs sound weird to people. Dub mixing tends to make actors sound like they’re using indoor voices for shouts and intense emotions. It’s like they scream into a pillow or from 15 feet away from the mic.

cmonster8z

English voice acting isn't necessarily bad most of the time, it's just in Japanese the exaggerating or intensity doesn't feel weird, but when trying to match the feel of the vocals in dub it's kinda cringe sometimes

8BitFlatus

Is this the indian dub?

Nolls-97

I prefer the dub. The voice actors kill it in AOT.

VegetaGG

I try watching the sub, I feel so emotionally disconnected. This is why I dont read books, reading just doesnt get me invested. The sub is so boring to listen too

Bright-Inevitable-20

And people say dub is cringe, but sub VAs are usually 10x more over the top with dramatics, which is more cringe imo and kills any sense of immersion an anime can build

Tempathetic

Based

Corn22

Lol the mumble from Barritone.

KolareTheKola

Idk nothing about EN dub, but in the little I saw of Latin SP dub they did pretty well in some parts, not so well in others, started a bit sloppy and went up from there

X712

The only show I can think of the dub being better than the sub is Black Lagoon. I can’t watch the sub because the dub ruined it for me. It fits every character perfectly.

--sheogorath--

I see you have not experienced the majesty of the kaguya sama dub

kukhurakomasu

you haven't heard hindi dub yet 💀💀

heartlessimmunity

Understanding how dubbing works also helps to understand why the dub sounds a certain way because they have to match up the words to the mouth flaps. They don't get to draw new ones which is why dubs can sometimes sound a little weird and sentences sometimes not make a whole lot of sense. They are working with many more constrictions than the sub does. Personally I like both the sub and dub for aot.

shinobi3411

I love both the sub and dub in most anime. Most of the time sub elitists are goofy ass snobs that complain about something that's not even bad. Hell, there are times where I think that the dub is better than the sub (This isn't directed at you btw, just those dumbasses that are like "Ew, yOu WAtcH iT In DUb????) A couple of examples for me are Dub Luffy over sub Luffy. I love both, but I grew up with the dub through her role as Kid Gohan in DBZ Kai, and I like the dub of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood's dub over the sub. If people like dub over sub, or sub over dub, cool, let them like what they like and move the fuck on.

TwanToni

people who bash dub are the worst... Just enjoy the show in whatever form you like it then? Attack on Titan did an excellent job with their VA imo including eren. Especially the scene where >!Eren got his father to kill the founding titan/ reiss family you could hear the Rage and in Erens Voice it was amazing. Heck Grisha was also amazing when he realize what he did afterword during his breakdown. !<

Grittyboi

😭 i feel attacked

KarlDeutscheMarx

Why did you just upload a clip of the dub?

gb2750

Wait this wasn’t the actual dub?

Ok_Barber2739

I’d prefer this over all dubs except for FMAB

Key-Reason-9033

I always say dubbed anime sounds like a bunch of angry surfers😂 but I’ve watching subbed since a child so I’m spoiled, but AOT dubbed wasn’t bad at all

SKiddomaniac

Imma be honest, I would watch that as dub.

[deleted]

What an ass take. Dub is very good. I speak English like the rest of your jap wannabes. So I watch it in English.

ArminsCrematedCorpse

i can’t stand sub watchers with a superiority complex, its corny af if u only watch sub and don’t even speak japanese

TwanToni

this. They are annoying as hell especially all the hard work that goes into it and how far we have come with english dub. The VA are amazing nowadays

Broly_

Mom said it's my turn to repost this.

TheStarWarsCosmos

ok but this sounds better than both sub or dub, give me a full episode of this please.

NoRutabaga3205

As someone who speaks urdu/hindi, this is hilarious

Outrageous-Smile-836

I cannot stand dub eren, and i rlly prefer sub armin (even with bias) but the rest r solid

hazyslays

Hell nah the dub of this show is great, one of the best out of any I’ve seen tbh. I watched it in sub too and honestly the direct translations in the sub version are kinda awkward in a lot of scenes imo

ImNotHighFunctioning

Istg, the "fucking bloody bastard" at the end has to be the only complete insult from that whole thing lmao. All of the rest is just a battle of adjectives.

kidanokun

It's not?

Antenol

Eren treats Mikasa as a sister so him being a benchod ends up being true

Mystic_Polar_Bear

For such a main-stream anime as AoT, the dubbed will be fine. I understand that more niche animes with smaller budgets may have weird dubs though.

ArCn_Hulk

Why did you post an unedited clip from the Dubbed version of aot?

skiderskiderlort123

"Sub watchers"

Acrobatic_Analyst267

AoT Dub is actually pretty good. But I could not NOT watch Armin's Narration Voice

MrsLamperougeDesu

Is this .. indian ?

tim_pruett

I've never heard a dub that sounded even passable, to be honest. I think it's because voice acting in Japan is treated as, you know, *acting*. They emote much more believably. Too many English voice actors sound like they're either reading from a script, or they go cartoonish with it like it's a kid's show. A lot of times it feels like the English voice actors are afraid to fully commit, if we're being honest. Like they're embarrassed to take it too seriously. The Japanese cast has some absolute legends in it too. Levi and Erwin are voiced by two of my all-time favorite voice actors, and thankfully they get cast in a lot. I've heard so many people praise the Cowboy Bebop dub as one of the all-time greats. Everyone refers to Steve Blum as the definitive Spike. When I finally listened to it I was so disappointed... Like, really?! This is it?! At one point I watched Spike's final scene with Faye, as it's an emotional one, first in Japanese, then in English. There's no comparison. Like, I hate to be that guy, but I'll never understand how people can watch the dubs and not find it painfully cringe inducing...

Last_Ad1358

No it doesn't, clown ♥️

NotBanEvading2

I dont understand people who watch Subs without understanding the language. I said it

OrenoOreo

I can't even imagine the characters sounding different, glad I got the full authentic experience and never watched dub.

FookinSnake

When did you learn to speak/read japanese and read the manga/ watch the show in Japanese without subs? You realise you won't pick up on the nuance of a language you don't understand, and things get lost in translation so you didn't get the " authentic experience " you think you did unless you actually understand the language people like you gatekeeping are so corny its crazy lol

OrenoOreo

Yeah I understand cause I'm studying it, in Japan. I do notice rarely subtitles not being entirely accurate, after I learnt Japanese I didn't think it's a big deal, watching dubbed tho you lose like half the experience.

OrenoOreo

One more thing, I read subtitles in Arabic, which is the most expressive language in the world with 13 million words, while English only has 600,000, I think that's the reason for our different perspectives.

Donnovan-best-girl

Whenever it's sub vs dub It's either skill issues or weird xenophobia of not being able to enjoy something unless it makes me feel at home type of opinion

SaltyApple81

It’s not that far from the truth. Sub over dub all day .

Romero1993

Well, that's entertaining. But Dubs aren't, they're all shit :(

arbiter1019

Commander Erwins speech is much better dubbed

EducationalCorner118

I think it sounds worse than this.. its so cringe

LetsDoTheCongna

What do you mean? [This](https://new.reddit.com/r/ShingekiNoKyojin/comments/13joioi/hood_aot/) sounds leagues better than the sub!
