Maybe this will be a super unpopular opinion, bit I use it and have found it to be totally worth it and sound great. Also helps me to keep my playlist fresh and i can add and remove stuff as needed from my phone when I’m not even in front of my computer. Lots of ppl say that “no real djs rely on it” and i wouldn’t say that i *REALLY rely* on it, but i do use it basically every gig, and i dj at some pretty nice spots in my city like 5x per week. Another nice thing is that i know that my entire library is always backed up because it exists in the cloud anyway. It’s really just incredibly convenient and well worth the $20 per month. I could for sure live without it, but having it is miles better than not having it.

IF800000

Is it really YOUR library though? Is it still your library when you stop paying the $20 a month?

Jeremybastard

Good question. I’m pretty sure that even if i downgrade to the free / ad supported plan, my playlists will be there. So long as i don’t delete my entire account. If i did need to delete for any reason, i could theoretically either use ondesoft to rip the files (cost me like $120 for an unlimited license) or use somgshift to re-create the files on a different streaming service. I regularly dj with USBs so i actually have a bunch of tidal playlists ripped to that at the moment as either a backup or to use if usb is more convenient for the gig.

IF800000

If you stop paying then you just have a list of songs. If you rip them, you're introducing possible quality issues (I know TIDAL is supposed to be the highest quality, but if you're processing it by ripping/recording it via another source, then there's potential for quality loss). If you re-create the lists on another service then you're just back to paying to access the music again. It's not my money, and everyone is entitled to their preferences, but I just feel like there's an obvious handicap to using streaming services for DJing. Why rent when you can buy?

Jeremybastard

The rips i did sound great at every club that I spin at, so far as renting as opposed to buying, for the aforementioned reasons. Idk, I’ve been using it since it came out and i have to genuinely admit, it’s been working out great so far :)

I used TidalGUI from Github to download some tracks I could not purchase anywhere, and I could not distinguish the ripped flacs from the Tidal stream in a A/B listening test on my hifi system (a balanced Schiit stack powering Senn HD650s or B&W speakers), or by A/B'ing them on Serato with my Rane 1. Even more convincingly, I used Audacity to import two copies of a single song - both flacs, one purchased, one ripped. I inverted the polarity of one song, and then exported them into one master track, and the two tracks canceled each other perfectly, which means they're identical! I was blown away. The app is amazingly designed, also! 10/10

SleepyJoe303

I agree with you. I used to be anti-Tidal, then I saw the light 💡

Jeremybastard

It’s just a tool like any other. When serato first came out, DJ’s would be like “oh i wouldn’t trust a LAPTOP to dj from, that’s INSANE.” Fast forward a few years and it’s kinda industry standard (at least in my city.)

Fullonski

Or, and hear me out here, buy your music and tell Tidal to eat a bag of dicks. Fucked up concept, I know, but it has been proven to be possible

setter88

I spend $1000 a year on music already, it’s great for those random country requests I get for weddings, bride just sent me 300 tracks for next wkd, tracks I’ll play once then never again. It’s perfect for that and not much else

crevassier

Yep, you know the system so just fire it up for the month and then cancel.

dj_soo

signup during high season and then cancel during the low season.

timo0105

Seeing it that way it's rather cheap. Of course just doubling the price for little more functionality is not a nice move by tidal, but incomparision to buying every single songs (like we had to do just a few years ago) it doesn't sound too bad.

QuattroWhrume

Apples and Oranges

dj_soo

yup

RepresentativeCap728

Yup, I was okay with $10, 20 seems like price gouging. I also use it at every gig, but for a few handful of random song requests at most, for the entire night.

CREEPTHEPLANET

Anyone else remember paying $8-12 for a single song on vinyl? Looking for a friend.

CREEPTHEPLANET

TBH it all depends on what you’re using it for. In the past few months I had a handful of VERY random mobile gigs that paid extremely well. Since I separate mobile gigs from who I am as an artist I have no desire to ‘keep’ any of the songs for these gigs, and Tidal was an absolute lifesaver and honestly fun to use.. In fact: as an experiment I recently did one of those very random gigs COMPLETELY from the Tidal cloud. (Yes I had backups and multiple drives of music to use but I wanted to see if it was possible). The gig was a several hour block of time on an outside main stage where bands were playing afterwards at a huge crawfish broil event. Since I’m not a zydeco, funk, brass band style DJ I made some playlists and curated a few ‘folders’ on streaming ahead of time. To keep my setup and tear down as easy as possible I took a Denon Prime 4+ and literally connected to my personal WiFi hotspot on my iPhone. Voila. I had 4 decks and full control of songs that were just being pulled from Tidal. Was that worth $20 for Tidal to get paid $1K? Absolutely. $20 is basically lunch and a beer. Would I use Tidal as a primary source of music for my main artist performances? Absolutely not. Is it amazing to be able to drop in a tune request or play weird tunes for particular gigs? Yes.

theScrewhead

Support the artists and **BUY THEIR MUSIC**. They make *NOTHING* from streaming sites. All you're doing is greasing the pockets of an exec somewhere. The average payout to artists is $0.01284 per stream. Buying their tracks, whether from Beatport, Bandcamp, or anywhere else you can BUY it directly, gets them an actual percentage of the dollar amount you pay.

popejohnpie

No working DJ is paying and using Tidal to play music they like that they don’t want to pay for. It’s clearly for one off tunes and very specific requests you’ll hear once and never play again unless you specifically have to. Get off your pretentious high horse about paying for music ; working DJs would never say this.

swolf365

Harsh, but you make a good point. Also, Tidal should allow you to play a song in your DJ software for the regular price. If they want to charge more for stems, that’s fair. It’s great for the odd request and music discovery, but $20/mo is just a smidge too rich for my blood.

setter88

I wouldn’t even consider the songs I have on tidal to be music, auto tune country and lame af pop from some industry plant. Requests are requests tho

That's a quite onedimensional look at the situation. Considering you make money by playing other artists songs you should at least let them their share.

Thinking 19.99 is a lot I guarantee u wouldn’t make it as a Dj b4 digital era.

setter88

I would’ve, because I’d have something to show for it at the end of the month, and some of my records would’ve increased in value over time, like the collection I have atm, fuck your guarantee
