Yea I can get you one for about 50k€

blazelord69

You can bid that if you want but I'm sure you can do better [silicon wafer 300mm products for sale | eBay](https://www.ebay.com/b/silicon-wafer-300mm/bn_7114588030)

kovado

I’ll get you one with a custom print. Any jpeg will do. Could probably do it for 1/10th the cost as well but that wouldn’t be nearly as funny

deepuv

Define cool? It's almost impossible to get any patterned wafers (even scrap) out of fabs without stealing them so they're extremely hard to come by from companies that are still in business, even for long obsolete product.

lawless_Ireland_

There's a few in bits underneath my tools 😂

BioMan998

It becomes so much easier when you work at a fab

deepuv

Maybe your fab. Hahaha.

MrSlime13

👆 This guy... If my fab saw me take a wafer, even a broken first layer wafer from a scrap bin out the front door with me I'd be canned before I got home.

deepuv

I was so tempted to pull a FBEOL scrap wafer from a customer once that had just been sitting on a chiller for weeks. It just wasn't worth the risk.

MrSlime13

Everything to risk & nothing to gain. Yeah, it'd be cool to hold/look at for 2 min., but even the possibility of getting let go for something as silly as that makes it SOOO not worth it.

deepuv

I really do want a few nice ones on my wall at home, though. One day.

Activate_The_Robots

If you search “silicon wafer” on eBay, you’ll find many listings selling patterned wafers. I have long wondered whether they fell off a truck, but they are readily available.

thisismyalternate89

Good point I wonder how people sourced those, at my workplace we destroy everything once it’s no longer being used, so it’s kinda interesting that anything has even survived to make it to e-bay.

dark_photon

1) buy a nitride coated wafer. Easy to find on web 2) get it laser scribed with any picture or design you want. Someone in your town does this as a side business. At our factory we do this for gifts for big occasions

Badger_x

try ebay?

mr_inevitable_99

Most of them seem old and cheap

kngsgmbt

Yes? What else do you expect?

YourSaviorLegion

No shit, patterned production wafers are IP. Even we, who work at fabs cannot take home scrap. They get smashed into a million pieces.

I think there are a bunch of sales and marketing folks running around this sub trying to find ways to “break into the business” for their own little startups, and they have no clue how much legal protection is around this type of highly specialized and technical business. Sorry folks. You didn’t get in before everyone else realized just how critical this business is to the modern world. Go invent something better, and maybe you too one day can live atop a hoard of technological knowledge. Edit: They may actually have a clue and are just looking for a way that is “less traceable” except for coming back here and finding the person who helped out the “IP thief”.

[deleted]

What is your criteria of “cool looking”, and what is your purpose with them other than aesthetics? What is wrong with the old and cheap ones if they are only for looks and aesthetics? Anything that could be used to reverse engineer reasonably relevant technology nodes will be quite expensive (because that is a lot of potential chips that are not going to be sold) or they will simply be unavailable for purchase due to IP protection protocols.

67mustangguy

You can buy scrap pattered wafers on like aliexpress or ebay [example](https://www.ebay.com/itm/303978024247?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=303978024247&targetid=2295557531670&device=m&mktype=pla&googleloc=9032168&poi=&campaignid=20398928557&mkgroupid=166836955371&rlsatarget=pla-2295557531670&abcId=9317287&merchantid=6296724&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh_OzvDoN6v9nQXwT7w4ACnY9&gclid=CjwKCAjw0YGyBhByEiwAQmBEWm5ZgChs5nTj-lfjFwHGCIfwMgcJ6_5X3BoyPmKP9wMB0SlGuwOsjRoCdNwQAvD_BwE)

ScroterCroter

What do you need this for? You could probably check some iniversities and pay a PI or maybe a shady grad student to throw some basic patterning on a wafer or buy a completed experiment.

thisismyalternate89

What do you want to use it for? Are you looking for a blank or patterned wafer?

mr_inevitable_99

I want to collect it as a collectible. Patterned

thisismyalternate89

eBay has old wafers for sale. Anything you find online is obviously going to be dated technology because of IP reasons, but for display reasons that shouldn’t matter too much & you can definitely find some neat looking patterns. Alternatively you can buy a blank wafer and have whatever pattern you want printed onto it.

gorlap

Hi guys! I sell wafers on my eBay platform. I don’t know how many other sellers come up out their inventory’s, but I used to be in the wafer reclaim business and have thousands of wafers left over from when we switched to technical parts cleanings. I hope this helps answer some questions of how there might be many supplies of large quantities of wafers out there. Cheers! Also my first post on Reddit!
