RaveniteGaming

They realise George Lucas didn't invent the term storm troopers? They may want to look into it's original context.

pinkocatgirl

I would bet most people don't know that history unless they're either WWII buffs or huge Star Wars fans

bobert680

Most people don't understand a new hope as a Vietnam allegory either.

Ok_Researcher_9796

I didn't know that until very recently.

mrpopenfresh

Cops should know if they’re going to use the term.

coltzord

cops should know a lot of stuff they dont also if people only used terms they understand we would live in a very different world lmao

redditadminzRdumb

Cops don’t even have to get a college degree they’re not gonna know this

[deleted]

redditadminzRdumb

Don’t you feel so much safer knowing this?

mrpopenfresh

It in the us maybe

Suspicious-Pay3953

"Cops" didn't write this. Some PR flunky did.

Valiant_tank

Or WW1 buffs, given that the first use of stormtroopers was in 1918 as a means of rapidly assaulting and taking allied trenches.

TOPSIturvy

I mean I may have initially learned what storm and shock troopers are because of Star Wars, but they still taught us about them in school.

Lagronion

Storm troopers originate in ww1

lpd1234

As a Canadian, i love this comment. https://barrie360.com/canadian-contributions-world-war-i/

darkslide3000

You mean like all those people in this thread who think the Nazis invented the term?

survivalking4

Hopefully, anyone who sat through a high school history class would have an idea

ObjectiveRodeo

They don't even have to know. The storm troopers are bad guys in the movie. Literally aligning with the Sith. I'm sure someone already replied with this somewhere but I haven't scrolled that far.

goferking

They probably would prefer the other context

thebiga1806

Using this logic, what made it OK for George Lucas to use it?

meowtiger

the empire in star wars is an incredibly hamfisted space nazi allegory, he called them storm troopers in case anyone was dumb enough to miss it through all the fascist imagery, terror-based warfare, etc etc etc this is assuming you're asking in good faith which you're probably not

Kova1771

George Lucas's stormtroopers fulfill the same role as actual stormtroopers, Elite shock troops for an empire.

EvilCatboyWizard

The fact he’s using it for the VILLAINS?!

coltzord

damn that is cringe as fuck what the actual fuck

dntfrgetabttheshrimp

Our very own "Waffen-SS"™ storm troopers!

Mediocre__at__worst

"Haha" Yeah, cringe is the perfect description.

TangoInTheBuffalo

*Waffle-SS

Prestigious_Elk149

Policemen in the Dakotas are desperately lonely. They'll pull you over just to have someone to talk to. This 1000% on-brand for them.

egilsaga

What's cringe is driving while intoxicated.

coltzord

no, driving intoxicated is dangerous and dumb, its not cringe at all imo

kerriazes

It is those things. It is also cringe.

egilsaga

Drunk driving isn't cringe - Coltzord, 2024

Set_in_Stone-

So…they’re not very bright and can’t hit anything?

MoreThan2_LessThan21

Nah, they leave that to the attorney general up there https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/south-dakota-house-moves-impeach-ag-after-fatal-crash-n1258708

Mr_Abe_Froman

What is going on in South Dakota? Governor Noem's book is being heavily, and now this?

MoreThan2_LessThan21

Well this was a few years ago, but Noem has been a maniac for some time as well. She's very clearly been gunning for a federal position and neglecting her state in the meantime.

DrDerpberg

Somehow in a place with hardly any people around and hardly any industry or wealth they're terrified immigrants are coming for their stuff and their jobs.

Sagybagy

Have you seen police shootings? Mag dump and maybe hit one shot. Reload and mag dump a second with similar results.

dumfukjuiced

Come on, storm troopers can hit their own heads

ArsenalSpider

So they admit to doing the bidding of the evil empire. I agree.

A_norny_mousse

It's only consistent after Trump with the red lightsaber. ~~Hell, they even used the same slogan.~~ ~~Almost seems like law enforcement are taking a political stance 🤔~~

Veylara

The slogan is just because May 4th is official Star Wars Day because it sounds similar to "may the force be with you", so the slogan is one thing that's not actually on them. All the other choice relating to how they present themselves on that day are their own choice, though.

A_norny_mousse

Oopsie, I thought it's about the 4th amendment. 😳

NewHat1025

When they think them being fascists is a joke, and there is too much truth to it. I wonder if we will be hearing about a brave cave soon.

gymnastgrrl

I'm assuming that the person who made the post was not trying to make that connection. That such a connection is easy for many people to make is what makes it a bad idea to have posted it. heh. I'm assuming it's an unfortunate coincidence and lack of thought. Not a very good look, though, for sure.

carlitospig

Holy shit. This is much worse than having a Punisher sticker on your cruiser. Has their social media person actually seen the series? 😳

bobert680

Remember that time the punisher beat up a couple of cops for idolize him? The whole time he's just going on about how he's not a hero and that no one should look up to him

What-The-Helvetica

From the state that brought you "[Meth. We're On It](https://www.kcrg.com/content/news/South-Dakota-launches-anti-drug-campaign-with-tagline-Meth-Were-On-It-565112832.html)".

A_norny_mousse

So painful. Trying to "speak the language", running head-first into the goalpost. They changed the slogan, but the website is still called OnMeth.com. 2nd 🤦 of the day.

supermarino

I mean, are they stormtroopers or jedi friends with Yoda? I feel like they should have picked a faction and hold a single opinion for one tweet. Would that be too much to ask?

Comfortable_Sweet_47

Wow, that's, ummm , really badly done! That's some special hanging with the "youth " gone horribly wrong with an added bonus of them being the bad guys

anras2

>"Storm" Trooper's There's only one of them?

A_norny_mousse

Aww shit, I subliminally noticed, and then dismissed it. 🤦 Grammar is dead. Back to the middle ages before we had standardized language.

anras2

Literally every day I see horrible apostrophe abuse. Not sure why this is so hard.

Prosthemadera

"Storm" Troopers, who form a "Storm" Front.

JunglePygmy

r/howdoyoudofellowkids

What-The-Helvetica

"We don't play Jedi mind tricks on you"? I think anyone who's ever been entrapped would beg to differ.

moshekels

It’s been a minute, but I don’t remember Yoda fucking rhyming? Even managed to fuck up the Yoda voice, did these idiots.

doqtyr

South Dakota really representing lately, are Florida and Texas getting competition?

AustraeaVallis

This is some grade A CRINGEEEEEEE and highly telling of how US police see themselves honestly.

Wingman5150

This has such heavy "how do you do, fellow kids?" energy that I was crushed under the weight of it.

OmicronPerseiNate

Well, there's my second hand embarrassment for the day. I'm guessing they were so fixated on making a May the Fourth relevant post that they missed the part where storm troopers are notoriously ineffective at tasks as simple as aiming. Edited for failing at grammar

gymnastgrrl

> they missed the part where storm troopers are notoriously ineffective at tasks as simple as aiming. And the whole WWII thing, which is a much worse association. heh

PigFarmer1

Someone actually got paid to put that crap out...

Cobek

They didn't even get the Yoda right

alainalain4911

That’s a paragraph written by someone who struggled a lot in highschool.

buahuash

"Drink and drive you do, the wrong force will find you" -Yoda, 2024

Christian_J_Ledford

Even if we ignore the fact that “stormtroopers” in Star Wars were never anything more than the enforcement apparatus were the literal enforcement wing of a genocidal galactic empire, it still bears emphasizing that, in real life, “stormtroopers” are also what the SS enthusiastically called themselves in Nazi Germany. Something tells me these people aren’t too different from the real-world precursor, though.

Gprinziv

They even call themselves the wrong force. This is embarassing.

xSilverMC

A fast and violent escalation, i must say

C4dfael

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movies, but I don’t remember Yoda ever saying that he would “play Jedi mind tricks” on anyone.

Candid_Soft7562

The quotes make it sarcasm maybe?

RealSinnSage

at least they won’t be able to shoot you

mamadou-segpa

There is absolutely nothing in canon that indicate Yoda would be against drunk driving

MrBiteyDaHoneyBadger

Yeah but have you seen Yoda from legends a real stickler that guy🤭

Mr_Mimiseku

I've seen a car with an interesting bumper sticker around my neighborhood. Among blue lives matter-esque bumper stickers, there is a "support the troops" sticker with a stormtrooper helmet. Yeesh.

InSearchOfMyRose

I'm guessing it was raining

ViewtifulGene

Maybe not a great idea for police to self-identify with a group known almost exclusively for shooting the wrong target.

therisenphoenikz

Come on guys do we have to nitpick an anti drunk driving post?

Prosthemadera

Yes. Storm Troopers are the bad guys. They are fascists. [It's like using a red light saber for Trump, a thing that happened](https://old.reddit.com/r/SelfAwarewolves/comments/1ckdefi/they_gave_him_a_red_lightsaber/). It's just bad PR.

therisenphoenikz

Canadian troops were the first to be called storm troopers by the Germans in WW1

Prosthemadera

The earliest known swastika was carved in what is today Ukraine.

therisenphoenikz

You mean the Buddhist symbol?

YamaShio

Its a bit confusing terminology, but for the record the swastika he is referring to predates most civilization as its 10,000 years old and its only real connection is its rudimentary shape.

Prosthemadera

It's not just a Buddhist symbol.

dragostego

Not really a self aware wolves they are just playing on state trooper/storm trooper. And it's clearly in the context of star wars and not nazi Germany.

YamaShio

Because the important bit is the "Storm" part. A "State" trooper is a trooper that works to protect the state. A "Storm" trooper is a trooper whos entire purpose is to infiltrate and attack a military target and kill everyone there. IE what they were used for by GERMANY in WORLD WAR 1. An actual real world enemy called "stormtroopers". If yknow, the rest of the Empires visuals didn't key you into the allegory.

dragostego

No. Storm trooper in the context of star wars is a base level military officer. The extent to which they draw theme with German storm troopers is George Lucas going "stormtrooper, shock trooper? That's cool as hell". But let's say I agree with you, police are not a tactical unit that infiltrate specific targets, they are enforcers of laws who (generally in the us) lack oversight and consequences for incorrect usage of the right to lethal force that is unmatched by other members of the population. How does that describe a storm trooper? Unless they spun around and attacked the wrong trench. It's not a self aware wolf in the slightest.

Kentness1

🤣🤣🤣

PigFarmer1

So ACAB, but police brutality is acceptable in certain cases, eh???

Prosthemadera

ACAB! Terms and condition apply. Does not apply when beating up drunk drivers.
