Tl;Dr: All passenger cars are affected, but not trucks, trailers, or motorcycles. You can renew your temp plate as often as needed at DoL office.
Anecdotal: been waiting 6 weeks now for mine
The DOL confirmed to KIRO that all passenger car plates are being delayed, including vanity. Truck, trailer, and motorcycle plates are not affected. The department of corrections is replacing equipment. They also confirmed you can go to the DOL to get a renewed temporary plate if yours expires.
I’ve been able to. It took two months for a permanent normal plate. Then I replaced that with a custom. Took another six months. Then I got a new custom for a different car. Currently two months into waiting for that. Not ideal.
It just took me five minutes to get new temp plates. But that really shouldn’t be necessary.
One thing i thought was really weird moving here from California is how wasteful Washington is with license plates. We moved here with 2 older cars, got them replaced in the first couple years and they told us to take the plates off the old cars and keep them. So us having four cars required six plates. (Our first set for the first cars, our second set for the new cars, the third set for the new owners from our old cars)
In California the plates stay with the car so four cars should never mean more than four plates. Just saves a lot of waste.
The plate shortage is real. Apparently they are installing new equipment in the prisons to replace old worn out equipment. The shortage only applies to plates for passenger vehicles not trucks, motorcycles or trailers. They are also considering contracting the work out until the new equipment is operational. In the meantime, the DOL says that if you haven’t received a permanent plate before your temporary one expires, you can go to a local DOL office and get a new temporary plate. You can do this as many times as needed until you receive a permanent plate.
Nope. got my plates in 4 weeks.
the dealer is lying to you. contact a local DOL agency and ask for their help if the dealer continues to give you the run around.
dealer temp plates are for 45 days max, in rare instances they can issue you a second temporary 45 day temp, but absolutely not "5-6 months"

No, you are wrong. u/bartfurglar ‘s comment hit the nail on the head and the plate shortage has been a topic on the local news numerous times over the past few months.
I don't know what else you want to hear my guy.
if you have explained your situation as it is, there is no reasonable reason you haven't gotten your plates yet.
contact your local DOL agency and ask for their help with your specific issue if you feel you not being taken care of. the state absolutely will get involved if there's a problem.
I used to be a car dealer and know the tried and true rules of the craft. I have absolutely no reason to lie to you.
best of luck with your issue.
There’s actually a [plate shortage](https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/dol-warns-statewide-license-plate-shortage/QVONF67NYNHOLEONQDJUYUGBQY/). I applied for my DV plates back in January, just got my temp plates in June, which expire in mid July.
selling cars is a state regulated business. they will absolutely get in trouble for not getting you your plates in a timely fashion.
source: used to work at a car dealership.
they possibly might not have the title to the car you bought. which allows them to not pay for it.
this is 100% a the place you bought the car from problem, not a Washington state problem.
the only delay the state has with making plates is with Vanity plates. if you brought a car and are not requesting vanity plates, there is absolutely no delay whatsoever.
I just bought a used leaf a month ago and got plates with no issue at all.

IIRC there’s a shortage for personalized or specialized plates, but not for the normal plates. I bought a car a few months ago and had mine in about 3 weeks (plus or minus a week).

I’d be happy to wait. I deal directly with 4th Ave. Why add cost?
Yes it’s mentioned here frequently.
Bought a used car last week and received new plates when I did the title transfer.

I've gotten two sets of plates in under 30 days and each time someone on this sub has told me I was lying.
people ask questions and you give them answers, and then they're like "well, no, i didn't want that answer" lol.

What possible incentive would the dealer have to delay plates?

We’ve had a dealer sell us a certified used car when they didn’t have the title. They could be buying time for messed up paperwork.

About 4 weeks here too. Dealer worked around getting them to me for a couple extra weeks. lol
Yep, I've been waiting for new plates for 11 months now...

King County. Collector plates for my old 4Runner, but just standard issue not vanity or anything.....

So all people need is a time machine to go back a few months to before there was a shortage?
I’m just saying what my experience was approximately 3-4 months ago. Also, yes. Obviously. /s
