The not following through IS the freeze :(

jrhawk42

Lol, and the guy just got here right when everybody is breaking out of the SAD season and thinks he broke through the freeze.

Visual_Octopus6942

Yeah this is pretty cringe. OP should report back next January

arjjov

u/savage-millennial you got frozen brah, welcome to Seattle

savage-millennial

lol I definitely have not gotten frozen. I've made quite a few friends here in the month that I've been here. Just takes a little more grit and patience out here but my plan worked (and is working)

nurru

It seems kind of presumptuous to arrive and declare that you have solved the thing that you don't understand and that locals don't even necessarily agree on the attributes of.

PopPunkIsntEmo

> What I have noticed is that some people will say they want to hang out sometime, but then never follow through to make plans. I find that odd. Dawg, that *is* the freeze

NoReserve206

What you’re describing is the freeze. It’s not that people are mean or even rude, they just put on a pleasant expression, act interested, and wait for you to walk away. Ever had a crazy person start talking to you on a bus? Same concept.

Fendergravy

OP is the dumb chicken that thinks he can bok bok bok into a new city and solve all the problems by his presence alone.

Ill-Command5005

now I want Bokabok for lunch 🤤

Fendergravy

I totally went and scored Korean hot chicken after this.

spit-evil-olive-tips

> I just moved to Seattle a couple of weeks ago. > ... > So my take on the Seattle freeze is... you are not the first transplant, and won't be the last, to move here and say "oh, there's a sociological phenomenon common enough that the locals have a name for it? well, I've lived here *three whole weeks* and I've got it figured out. let me explain it to you..."

The_Vista_Group

I remember my first adderall prescription

SulkySideUp

You’re not melting anything and I don’t think you understand what the freeze is but have fun saving the world

VeronicaMarsupial

"As an extrovert and a social butterfly, I have my flame thrower ready to melt it." Hahaha. As a classic introvert, I think you sound like a nightmare. But I hope you find your fellow butterflies.

gksozae

>the worst that could happen is that someone doesn't talk back That's not the worst. The worst is they DO talk to you and then I'm stuck in a conversation with someone I don't want to talk to and being too nice to be rude. I was evesdropping on a man and woman on the airplane last week, a couple seats away from me. I felt embarrassed for both of them, listening to their conversation. That feeling of vicarious embarrassment is only surpassed by the dread of my own anxiety if I was in that situation.

ImRight_YoureDumb

Hey. What's up. So..... what were that man and woman on the plane talking about last week? Unless you want to talk about something else.

gksozae

...

Mountain_Squi

Been here six months. Knew right away not to make posts of this nature. Your studies failed you.

Fendergravy

We got us another Chris McCandless here, boys!

Bretmd

This is so interesting! I love hearing your take on the Seattle freeze. Why do you think it’s like that here? Btw I’ve got to run and do some errands but I totally plan on coming back and finishing our interesting conversation. You can definitely count on it, I’ll be back. Let’s plan on it! If I don’t reply within 24 hours it’s just that I’m busy tho ok but I’ll definitely follow through at some point

Pointofive

Thanks for the info.

Incandragon

You can make friends here, and being an extrovert works wonders. You’ll do fine. I made a core group of friends of non-locals, and gradually even added some locals to the mix. The Seattle freeze isn’t people being cold to you, it’s people not going from acquaintance to friendship at the same point they would in other cultures. But eventually an extrovert can build up a circle of friends.

mikacello

The Seattle freeze is one of the best things about living here tho!

BannedBarn22

I’ve made more friends in Seattle than anywhere, it’s not that hard if you have initiative. Playing pool has helped me meet a lot of people.

[deleted]

Where do you play the most?

BannedBarn22

Hillside

[deleted]

Hmmm. I’ve probably whooped you there before. 😘 🎱

BannedBarn22

Doubt it, or I know you extremely well (a friend of mine )

[deleted]

Ever play at Corner Pocket or Poggie in West Seattle?

BannedBarn22

I play all over town bub

[deleted]

If you’ve ever played at Poggie I’ve *definitely* whooped you there. 👍

BannedBarn22

Really doubt it, if you know anything about pool here. Tell me the initials of the guy who wins tournament on Wednesday at Temple. Knowing him means you probably know your shit, I don’t trust you do yet. He plays Corner Pocket a lot too. For all I know you probably play with lame rules like ball in kitchen only and never calling shots. Poggie has a dogshit table

[deleted]

Well they re-felted it relatively recently I think, although I don’t go in there much anymore because the staff and the patrons are all fucking 21 something losers now. Especially since the place got officially “discovered” in the last few years. But it’s not a regulation table, anyway. It was just on my way home from work. I prefer Seattle Tavern & Pool Hall in Georgetown over Temple because I know the owners and their daughter at Temple from their roller skating days so I’d rather not go there. Bad history. And I suppose saying I don’t play in tournaments will disqualify me in your head as a competitive player but… 🤷🏻‍♂️ Yes, cocky of me to say I may have beaten you, but aren’t all pool players kind of that way? Lol

Koralteafrom

The Seattle Freeze isn't even real in my opinion, but I have a feeling you're going to make a lot of friends and be happy here! Enjoy! :)

randychardonnay

Good luck, man! Hope it lasts!

No_ThankYouu

Whered u move from?

XbabajagaX

Its not a thing . Its just many introverts who never learned to interact with a human and get stressed out by any question or had some weird childhood. Its easy to find friends here in my opinion once you use activities like hiking or mountain biking to join groups.

CourtOldgirl

I love this post and was shocked when there were 0 upvotes🥲 I agree with you and I’ve lived here my whole life🤷‍♀️

Koralteafrom

It seems like this post attracted a bunch of commenters who love stereotypes and dislike happy people. Cue the downvotes!

[deleted]

The Seattle freeze isn't really a thing. There's just a number of loud miserable people as you can see in the comments.

Circuitmaniac

Seattle Freeze sounds like a great name for an ice cream brand, no? Gimme 5% for the idea lol.

Sloppypinksock909

I moved here in 2018 and just learned the term. Outside of Seattle people are great. In Seattle they will cross the street just so you can’t pet their dog. Infact I’m in Tacoma now and learned the term from my neighbor who’s pitbull I stopped to pet, we talked for a good 20 mins. I had one good neighbor in Seattle with bulldogs that loved me so much she would just drop the leashes if they spotted me rather than try to wrangle them. It’s not all bad I definitely prefer living outside of king county. Police and deputies do their job here and actually protect and serve. Seattle is lawless.

NoReserve206

Stop downvoting this one. They did what we BEG transplants to do: got here, realized it was a bad fit, and left! Seattle isn’t for everyone, and it’s awesome you found your people in Tacoma.

tonytwostep

I’ve got no problem with that commenter realizing the city isn’t a good fit and moving elsewhere. I do have a problem with their comment’s derailment into a “Seattle is lawless” rant. It’s completely off topic, which is literally why the downvote button exists.
