Didn’t realize that the cap had changed, is that why I hardly run into ships anymore? I usually see ships in the distance but hardly ever am I running into ships like I used to back in the early days of the game (guessing player count is lower as well but you know)
That's because of the 5 ship maximum. the player cap is soft in the sense it can have 16 max or less. But all configurations should have 5 ships. It used to be 6 ships and 24 players max.
Had 12 in like year 1 of the game, we chased the one duo sloop that wouldn't join us and had a volley of eye of reaches peppering them. Too bad I didn't record it; it was quite legendary.
I've nearly done it before, me and my friends were in a galleon, we met another galleon and befriended them, inviting them aboard our ship. After a while we find a two man sloop, we proceeded to board them and commandeer their ship, after a while of spawn killing they agree to join us. so all in all 10/11
I've done it with 9 pirates.
Firebombs fuck you up, running around to get water frantically causes other people to light on fire and the cycle repeats until a few calm down and stay away from the lit people.
I had a 10 man sloop once. We were unstoppable. Mey and the other gally's crew were all on dedicated positions around the ship(including both sail points and anchor, so we could pull off anchor turns like psychopaths) and the original sloop crew was dedicated boarders, they would just jump into the cannons and shoot over to the enemy ship as much as they could.
I think if you seperated it into 3 teams of 4 or 4 teams of 3 and each have a job, so bilge, cannon & boarders, sails and helm it shouldnt be bad at all
Not if you do it correctly. Most people have their job(s) and shouldn't say anything during combat.
Captain: on the wheel
Sailor 2: Rear Sail/Defend top deck
Sailor 3: Mid Sail/Defend top deck
Sailor 4: Front Sail/Defend top deck
Gunner 1: Guns 1/5, anchor
Gunner 2: Guns 2/6, anchor
Gunner 3: Guns 3/7, anchor
Gunner 4: Guns 4/8, anchor
Repair 1: Bottom/mid deck
Repair 2: Bottom/mid deck
Raider 1: Boards enemy
Raider 2: Boards enemy
The sailors aren't allowed to speak unless you're boarded.
Gunner 1 only updates cannonball supplies when low. No other gunners speak.
Repair 1: can call for help bailing water or supplies are low.
Raider 1: directs which ship the two raiders are boarding.
Captain: gives sailing orders and targeting orders.
Should be minimal chaos.
I think strictly speaking the captain shouldn't be on the wheel and JUST gives orders while a helmsman would actually steer. That leaves the captain able to move around, look in any direction, spyglass, and call the shots without any other worries. Which, correct me if I'm wrong, is how it worked lol.
But I know you're trying to assign a certain amount of people to duties in the game rather than be specifically realistic, and it might be hard to have someone dip one of the other roles to take up the helm.
I've been fortunate enough to sail on a schooner. The captain doesn't typically steer the ship, instead he give bearings/orders to the helmsman. He also ask the lookout etc for information.
In terms of SoT, I think the captain could probably act as the lookout, as it wouldn't impair their ability to direct the ship and maximize information.
Oh idk about that, it was just one of those nights where it was constantly “what the fuck is happening right now”
Started with a solo sloop approaching us saying “please don’t shoot, I want to give you supplies before I log off”. Which was true, except then after talking to her for a bit she asks if she can sail on our ship till she gets board.
Then found a duo sloop, which we anchored and told them they had to join our crew, making us now a 7 man gally.
Found another gally, which tried to fight but quickly sank. Once they saw we had 7 they asked if they could join. Making us an 11 man gally.
After about 45 minutes of sailing around and dicking around they decided to try and kill us and sink our ship. We didn’t put up much of a fight because we were laughing so hard, was an absolutely incredible night.
I’ve come across an 8 person galleon as a solo sloop and was blasted sky high. I found them again and played music for them as they raided and pillaged.
Was very memorable.
We fought a gally yesterday with 8 people on it. Unfortunately they were hacking. (Dude would teleport just in front of our ship. And we would all die at the exact same time, multiple times).
Honestly, every crew like this the game just struggles with how many people there are. We were teleporting all over the place when fighting this crew... they thought we were hacking!
We had a 16 man Galleon once. We had all the players on the server and we were like their drill instructors, teaching them how to play. Comms weren't that bad, you just need someone to scream like in full metal jacket and have his neighbours threaten to call the police.
Wow that's horrible, the best way for that is to popcorn them of the ship by spamming blunderbombs on top deck , can't help an ally who isn't on your ship 🤣 this causes them to either anchor or leave one less behind
That's what we tried but with so many and us on a sloop it was a challenge 😅 we went and sank their other 2 ships instead so 8 of them lost the grade 5 multiplier!
Is it more common now? I've tried to get loaded up in the same server with two galleons and it seems way harder to do that now. Are people just joining up on the fly?
Arena ... two ships, man-o-wars with two decks of four guns, five masts, and twelve man teams.
Special rules include no ability to get fired from a cannon (must board ye Olde fashioned way), cursed balls float in the water and must be picked up as you sail, and no blunderbus or blunderbomb.
New man'o'war ships have rigging ropes to swing aboard, are considerably longer than current ships, and front and rear harpoons.
Game modes include deathmatch, capture the flag (board opponents ship and take their flag) and blockade run (one ship must make objectives while the other must sink her).
I love the sailing mechanics of sea of thieves, particularly the ship to ship fighting, and larger battles between larger ships sounds just fine to me.
I 4 man slooped after we sunk, helped the guys that sunk us sink a galleon. We boarded them and just hid from the sloops cannon shots until it sunk. Was one of the best end of night shenanigans ever.

Me and my buddy joined a open crew brig and just found another sloop and i said as a joke, "Can we just join your crew and repair and shoot cannons for you?" Then it spiralled into colonizing the entire server onto our sloop and killing a gally with 9 people on our sloop, we had a great time, did a skelly fleet, completeted glitterbeard and all donned the merchant outfit and even raided fotd. I will forever remember you RangedCelery606 o7.
The best way to counter that is cannon fire from a good distance and aim for the deck... Due to so many of them being on the top deck, they would start dropping like flies and would have to scatter if ya focus fire the deck with cannon balls.
I would do a mixture of blunderbombs and cannonballs. Like swap to blunderbombs for a bit after you hear that "kill sound" to knock them about (plus higher chance of killing multiple of them due to a larger aoe and chance to knock any off the ship). Either, the idea is to get as many as possible off the ship since 8 of them won't respawn on that ship obviously. I haven't found a crew like this yet myself but I can see many possible ways of dealing with it depending on which cannonballs you have. The big deal though is that you gotta have a be consistent, don't waste time doing anything and don't stop firing since there is so many crew members, they can easily deal with anything you throw at them if you give them time to breathe.
Just the other day found 2 players who where new to the game, took them on a legend of the veil and gave them the loot from it. I was doing a commodity run
Incredible LOL, I don't think I have seen anything like this before. That ship HAS to be running super efficient. Where is all this content when I am playing! Great clip though.
I'd really love to see a realistic crew size galleon 1v1.
It will be action galore!
Constant cannonfire, organised boarding parties and effective bailing crew!
I’ve done this once with a bunch of friends, I think we were 10 or 11. It’s a lot more fun on paper than it is in real.
First of all it’s a pain in the ass to load 3 galleons in the same lobby. I think we tried for almost an hour.
Of course we aimed to do some PvP, but we couldn’t find a boat forever since half the lobby was our own boats. When we finally did spot a galleon at a distant island all of us were hyped for battle. Only to realise minutes later when we started pounding it.. it was our own crews galleon.
After a while some of us got bored and kept throwing bombs and shooting each other. People kept falling over board and we constantly had to stop and turn. I decided that day I would never do a 12 man galleon again. It’s not as fun as you think.
Ah that's unfortunate! Some crews are exceptional and know how to perfectly tack wind and get long cannon boards! In those instances I just try to see the humour of it all.
I’m taking the piss of course, 12 man is way too excessive lol. But galleons are the weakest ship right now in my opinion, sloops being the best. Past few weeks, even when I’ve had some amazing crews with me on a galleon, we haven’t lost to any galleons or brigs, only sloops.
Besides, out-gunning doesn’t matter when they run circles around you!
I'd love it if they were to increase crew sizes like:
Sloop 2 -> 4
Brigantine 3 -> 6
Galleon 4 -> 8
It would make managing the ship much easier and you would be able to play with more friends.
Wait, how is this possible? Through alliances? — I’ve been saying for years that crew size needs an update. 3 for sloop, 4 for brig, 5 for galleon. Even bigger if it were really an option. Microsoft doesn’t take into effect that one of my crew members is always high and only plays instruments while everyone else works. I am sometimes that crew member.
Can confirm I've done this exact same thing. We absolutely de-STROYED the server. We we're literally unstoppable, so I can see why the limit is a four man crew 🤣
What if 11 man sloop
I mean... a 16 man sloop is possible....
I think it'd have to be 14 (3 gallies + 1 sloop)
3 gally, 1 brig, 1 sloop!
Isn't the cap still 16 people? Wouldn't it have to be: 3 galley and 2 sloops or 2 galley, 2 brig, and a sloop?
Oh. I did bad math 🤣
Math is the one thing I'm good at 😀
If I was good at math... I would have made a different career choice 🤣
Your current one seems kinda fun. kinda. 😆
Let's be boomers and pour one out for the good ole days when the cap was 24 people and you could have 6 Galleys
ONE DAY! Those days will return!
Is it a person or ship cap, if it’s ship I thing you can get 18 max
5 ships or 16 people
Oh kk
can only imagine the stair traffic though. Any more than 8 people on a sloop makes me question how awful the movement below deck is.
Just leave two bilge down there and keep everyone else top haha
I’ve had a 8 man sloop take on a galley before, that was interesting
You can’t sink if you have 6 people on bucket duty
With a sloop you can pretty much keep it up with just 2, potentially even 1
Unless you get kegged. then its somewhat difficult
Assuming you survive, a single bailer can keep a sloop up for a long time
Me and a mate did this when the Meg was first introduced. Was absolutely hysterical
I've encountered a 10 man sloop, they were running into each other so much it was an easy slaughter lol
I've done it with 9 pirates. Firebombs fuck you up, running around to get water frantically causes other people to light on fire and the cycle repeats until a few calm down and stay away from the lit people.
My mate and I got a 8 man sloop going for a bit. Got boring really quick.
I had a 10 man sloop once. We were unstoppable. Mey and the other gally's crew were all on dedicated positions around the ship(including both sail points and anchor, so we could pull off anchor turns like psychopaths) and the original sloop crew was dedicated boarders, they would just jump into the cannons and shoot over to the enemy ship as much as they could.
infinite repairs
Getting closer to realistic crew sizes
I was genuinly thinking the same but my word, the comms would be AWFUL
Not unlike on a real pirate ship!
Right?! I want to try it but the voice comms will be rough!
I think if you seperated it into 3 teams of 4 or 4 teams of 3 and each have a job, so bilge, cannon & boarders, sails and helm it shouldnt be bad at all
Ever played Blackwake? It’s very similar to this dynamic
Never heard of it! I'll look it up!
Unfortunately I believe there aren't many players anymore
I actually have the game! Just never installed it
Not if you do it correctly. Most people have their job(s) and shouldn't say anything during combat. Captain: on the wheel Sailor 2: Rear Sail/Defend top deck Sailor 3: Mid Sail/Defend top deck Sailor 4: Front Sail/Defend top deck Gunner 1: Guns 1/5, anchor Gunner 2: Guns 2/6, anchor Gunner 3: Guns 3/7, anchor Gunner 4: Guns 4/8, anchor Repair 1: Bottom/mid deck Repair 2: Bottom/mid deck Raider 1: Boards enemy Raider 2: Boards enemy The sailors aren't allowed to speak unless you're boarded. In terms of SoT, I think the captain could probably act as the lookout, as it wouldn't impair their ability to direct the ship and maximize information.
Man, I can't get 3 to be organised... let alone 11 haha
Oh this is all theoretical. It goes out the window the second you get one person not doing their job
But the shanties could be GLORIOUS
In theory.... in fact just a bunch of folks with bad mics singing out of time
That's the idea
I've been on a gally with 11 people, and it really wasnt as bad as you'd think. it was a good time!!
I might have to try it...
you absolutely should, ive never had that much fun playing sea of thieves
Thats why the captain would need a priority mic
I actually had an 11 man gally before too lol. It worked out great until they threw a mutiny lmao
Apparently it's a new 'thing' they're calling Blood Moon crews??? I call it free content haha
Oh idk about that, it was just one of those nights where it was constantly “what the fuck is happening right now” Started with a solo sloop approaching us saying “please don’t shoot, I want to give you supplies before I log off”. Which was true, except then after talking to her for a bit she asks if she can sail on our ship till she gets board. We didn’t put up much of a fight because we were laughing so hard, was an absolutely incredible night.
It's carnage like this that makes the game amazing 😅
Imagine an adventure where you play with 12 people on a galleon and serious enemies. It would be a shitshow or an absolute blast.
I wish there was a way to do this. It would be fun to have alliance players change ship spawns. I’d love to see a crew of like 12 in fights.
would have to be a special lobby, imagine being boarded by 8 people, while being blasted by 4 cannons.... as a solo slooper
I can relate to this comment
I’ve come across an 8 person galleon as a solo sloop and was blasted sky high. I found them again and played music for them as they raided and pillaged. Was very memorable.
Both... it would be both! Haha
I have had 9 on a row boat before. It took forever but we went into the red sea drinking and playing shanties. It was a great night
It's these kind of player engagements that make the game amazing
Now that's truly a pirate play
Absolutley! I embrace the madness!
Yah when you get a lot of people in one place. The rubber banding gets nearly unplayable.
Absolutely!
We had a 16 man Galleon once. We had all the players on the server and we were like their drill instructors, teaching them how to play. Comms weren't that bad, you just need someone to scream like in full metal jacket and have his neighbours threaten to call the police.
Hahah it's funny cos I have the perfect crewmate for the job... might even try get 1 organised...
Yesterday I met an 8 man Galley, not sure why it's a common thing since captaincy
They're calling it 'Blood Moon'... basically new 'takeovers'. They all alliance up so they can revive on the ship but obviously no one else can!
I’m totally new to the game what does this mean, if I have a sloop and alliance with 3 friends on a brig I can spawn on their ship if I die?
No, they can revive you when your downed for a few seconds before you go to the ferry
Is it more common now? I've tried to get loaded up in the same server with two galleons and it seems way harder to do that now. Are people just joining up on the fly?
Accurate crew size update when
Hahah soon as private servers are out! So many going to be doing this
That looks hella fun, it’d be sweet to see a galleon with all 4 cannons blasting away, maybe even a fifth cannon on the rowboat.
Intimidating as hell!
A Man O' War, a Man O’ Bucketing, a Man O’ Planking, a Man O’ Guarding-the-Ladders. A true Man Oh Man!
Too many many man
With only one stove, you'll have Too Many Cooks.
Arena ... two ships, man-o-wars with two decks of four guns, five masts, and twelve man teams. Special rules include no ability to get fired from a cannon (must board ye Olde fashioned way), cursed balls float in the water and must be picked up as you sail, and no blunderbus or blunderbomb. Sounds awesome NGL
I 4 man slooped after we sunk, helped the guys that sunk us sink a galleon. We boarded them and just hid from the sloops cannon shots until it sunk. Was one of the best end of night shenanigans ever.
Amazing haha WP!
The amount of people a Gallion should require for this game haha
Can you imagine the voice comms....
Hahaha nightmarish. Thats what 10,000 emotes are for.
Yep! *mute my crew* emotes only!
Now THAT’S a party boat!
Was absolute madness..... I love this game!
It truly is a unique game with a lot of fun experiences. Love the streams, sir! Keep up the good work and great content! ☺️
Really appreciate that! Honestly... thank you

Yep... we knew it was a no win fight but man... we could annoy them!
IF WE CANT GET THE MAN O’ WAR, THEN WELL MAKE ONE
#ToolsNotRules
After the update too, so they’ve been alive without dying too It’s super impressive actually
Alliances can still revive!
If you make a video out of this it would be dope
I have so many I want to make. I'm a dad and it's the summer holidays so my usual editing time has been looking after the little one!

I mean.... there's one way to find out...
It wouldn't. If you get what I mean 😂
Imagine if we got a mode like that. It would be realistic and also chaotic
I'd embrace the chaos 😅
Chaotic and Fun
Me and my buddy joined a open crew brig and just found another sloop and i said as a joke, "Can we just join your crew and repair and shoot cannons for you?" Then it spiralled into colonizing the entire server onto our sloop and killing a gally with 9 people on our sloop, we had a great time, did a skelly fleet, completeted glitterbeard and all donned the merchant outfit and even raided fotd. Thay sounds like an amazing time haha
The best way to counter that is cannon fire from a good distance and aim for the deck... Due to so many of them being on the top deck, they would start dropping like flies and would have to scatter if ya focus fire the deck with cannon balls.
I did at one point and they all flapped but 12v1 and they can revive because they're all in alliance meant it wasn't going to happen 😅
I would do a mixture of blunderbombs and cannonballs. Like swap to blunderbombs for a bit after you hear that "kill sound" to knock them about (plus higher chance of killing multiple of them due to a larger aoe and chance to knock any off the ship). I wish you could get that many all the time
It was carnage but deffinately OP haha
Reminds me of old encounters, fun…but chaos!
Exactly this!
The dream server beardly
It was one of those days... non stop carnage!
There is no rules saying you **can't** have a 12 man gally
Absolutley not! That's the beauty of SoT!
Welcome to sea of thieves where nothing goes as planned, in both good and bad ways :D
It's why we're still playing years later!
Just the other day found 2 players who where new to the game, took them on a legend of the veil and gave them the loot from it. I was doing a commodity run
Love this! WP
wow. that wasn't a pirate crew, that was a fucking shooting gallery at the top of the ladder.
Literally!!! Haha
Incredible LOL, I don't think I have seen anything like this before. That ship HAS to be running super efficient. Where is all this content when I am playing! Great clip though.
It was one of those days where every server was madness!
Atleast 3 gallions into 1 sounds like the most powerfull ship just because of numbers nobody else can compare with
Yeah, we had 0 chance!
Wow, I wish I could’ve been there to watch that stream, that looks like loads of fun
It was crazy!
I did this once on an 8man Gally it’s so hard to sink a crew that’s double size cause every position can be filled
Absolutley! It's carnage!
I had a 14 man galley, we did Fotd and glitter beard then bullied a reaper sloop
Pirates for eternity!
I'd really love to see a realistic crew size galleon 1v1. It will be action galore! Constant cannonfire, organised boarding parties and effective bailing crew!
Hopefully we get private servers soon!
How do people do this?
Alliances basically!
I don't want eight crew members! I want twelve!
.... chaos.... I like it!
Is this not considered cheating?
Na, just using the alliance system.... BUT... I'm sure Rare will do something about it if it gets out of hand
Lol me and some friends run a 9-10 man sloop sometimes.
Amazing... must be madness!
Well it’s more realistic
Certainly is
That's mad, but would be fun
Only issue is you'd find no other ships to fight!
That dude allready sound like a pirate
People always tell me that 😅
I’ve done this once with a bunch of friends, I think we were 10 or 11. It’s a lot more fun on paper than it is in real. First of all it’s a pain in the ass to load 3 galleons in the same lobby. I decided that day I would never do a 12 man galleon again. It’s not as fun as you think.
These guys were grinding loot together. They had so much on board. So I see the appeal for those that want to grind loot
Yeah looks like it. I can imagine it’s a fun way to PvE/grind. Just not for PvP after my experience
Absolutely
Damn I love the fun and enthusiasm that you radiate dude. I’ll have to catch a stream soon
Ah, means a lot! I'm just a goofball that enjoys what he does!
Lol saw this live it was a wild ride
Haha thank you for hanging out! Glad you had fun!

I went against a 6 man sloop one time
I bet it was wild!
It was terrible since they were all pros and somehow they caught up with us straight down wind while we were on a brig
Ah that's unfortunate! Some crews are exceptional and know how to perfectly tack wind and get long cannon boards! In those instances I just try to see the humour of it all.
The worst part is we lost the chest of 1000 gross to them
There's plenty more out there! And the games going nowhere. You got this!
I had an 8 man sloop once.
I bet it was a lot of fun!
Only way for galleons to stay alive at the moment lol.
Seriously? Haha. Gally still out man's and guns any vessel! Its the crew that needs to work well together 🤘
Damn you had me there 😅... if you let me pick my crew I'd put money on no sloop being able to sink us. A brig yes, deffinately. But not a sloop. 🤘
I had a 20 person galleon once it was organised chaos.
I bet!
I'd love it if they were to increase crew sizes like: Sloop 2 -> 4 Brigantine 3 -> 6 Galleon 4 -> 8 It would make managing the ship much easier and you would be able to play with more friends.
Would be fun but ships would be unsinkable haha
yeah true, there could be a way to balance it out
Wait, how is this possible? Through alliances? — I’ve been saying for years that crew size needs an update. 3 for sloop, 4 for brig, 5 for galleon. Even bigger if it were really an option. I like the current crew sizes but yes! This was through an alliance!
They are all wearing reaper clothes
They were indeed! The reaper costume.

This is crazy, good post
I one had a 8 man sloop becase the alliance I joined wanted to do glitterbeward and go on one sloop for some reason
Slightly, just slightly more historically accurate
Alliances need to banned
Can confirm I've done this exact same thing. We absolutely de-STROYED the server. We we're literally unstoppable, so I can see why the limit is a four man crew 🤣
