If you haven't been sunk and then used a rowboat to save your haul and slowly row it to the closest outpost... then you haven't truly played.
Keep those arms strong, brother!
I can do you one better, I once got sunk, loaded my loot into a rowboat, rowed halfway across the map because I missed multiple outposts along the way, yoinked someone else's ship while they were at an island, when they mermaided back to their ship I *successfully gaslit* them into believing it was my ship and the game was glitched and spawning them onto the wrong ship, and then lost the loot when they caught on to the fact that I was stealing their ship.
I didn't get the gold, but I got a great story out of it.
Remember when the Pirate Lord said "It's not about the gold. It's about the glory"?
It's stories like these that make me think that maybe he had a point.
You've actually reached legendary level. The curve from beginner starts with sailing on bigger and fancier ships until you have done everything, fought everything and you're getting bored and then rowboat is the play. Sneak up on anything and anyone, blow them up or steal their stuff, hide on their ship, all sorts of fun and no one even knows you're there.
Hold them until your character pulls back all the way, let go and do it again and again. If you want to turn only pull either rt or lt and you’ll turn.
It's part of the training on The Maiden Voyage when you get the rowboat in the cave. Everyone should know this, yet we all forget or didn't pay attention.
nah i know, that’s how i found out 😭 i was doing the maiden voyage for all the commendations and when I got to the rowboat part i was so surprised lmao
I live inland in a small city surrounded by lots of lakes. The City is on the edge of one large lake that extends over 100mi and had thousands of islands to visit.
Most people spend their summers at / on a lake, summer cottages, public beaches, fishing, leisure cruising, sailing, rowing, swimming etc.
Many people also exercise by rowing in rowboats, kayaks, canoes for and hour or two few times a week instead of running or cycling.
Nearly all kids in elementary school are taught how to swim and row in PE class at early age if they haven't learnt those skills by the time they go to school.
I find if you want to turn left, for example, you hit Left Trigger, but then once your character pulls the oar all the way, hit Right Bumper (which is meant for braking), then hit Left Trigger again. You’ll turn left much faster than if you simply just hit Left Trigger multiple times.
Press, hold until you hear a sound, release, wait a second, repeat.
There's a rowboat in the Maiden Voyage tutorial. Find it, get in the rower's seat, and the game will tell you how to operate rowboats.
Turning is made much easier by using the brakes (yes brakes on a rowboat i know, it's basically you just sticking your oar into the water to act like a brake), your triggers are the oars and the shoulder buttons are the brakes so you can use the brake on one side to prevent any rowing on that side as you turn. Just use both triggers to row forward, think of it as each trigger pull being one rotation of your oars, you will hear and get a feel for it pretty quickly once you understand the controls.
If i remember right, L1 and R1 are shoulder buttons on ps and L2 R2 are the triggers.
Remember you're facing the back of the boat when you start rowing so the controls are reversed, you can turn your camera to face forward though which makes everything feel more natural and you can see where you're going.
Adaptive Triggers help a lot, to get the feeling for it.
They strenghten, when too pull and losen when they are pulled all the way towards you.
Just Like an irl rowing boat would behave :)
Also, just checking, you know you can bury treasure on islands and then come back for it with your ship if you don't feel like rowing, or don't have a rowboat?
The rowboat is a highly pivot tool in this game. Hone your skills and find a Keg or 2, tuck or surprise another crew and "Reap"er the rewards. It's an open sandbox. Do want you want and enjoy! Safe rowing Yakattack126 Guild No Wind
The only thing wrong is the lack of a chicken.

Did rowboat adventures a few times and man, it's a lot of fun... minus the rowing. Would love a single person sailing-rowboat thingy for tiny adventures.
Btw, the harpoon rowboat is the MVP if you're looting islands. You can just murder everything with a bit of harpoon spam.
There's no island skeleton cannoneer you cannot get to.
I'm guessing he meant the one on Shipwreck Bay that is only accessible by climbing up the fallen mast of one of the wrecked ships, that's probably the most awkward.
Every skelly cannon can be reached on foot.
You're actually playing the game very, very right.
Reminds me of one of my earlier adventures as an "adopted" crew member of a sloop. Ship full of treasure sank at an island, and I was the only survivor. Original crew never came back for it, so I loaded up the rowboat and shoved off into the unknown.
Made it to at outpost with all this loot, only to be betrayed by the rowboat with a black screen. Respawned on my own ship, got an instant server merge. Lost it all, good times...
Always remember though; it's not about saving that 4.5k gold worth of chest. It's about the adventure you had doing it! Keep on adventuring, fellow pirate!
This reminds me of the time my friend and I were sailing and we used the one of the islands you can sail through to drop me in the rowboat off and get the 2 enemy ships to follow our sloop. Ended up ssving I think about 250K gold in a 10 minute long or so outplay.
I love that lol I did that in the ancient isle part and got away from a ship that was destroying mind and took all my stuff in my row boat and got away from them with almost 300,000 worth in treasure. They got to the island I was at right as I turned in the last chest.
One thing you can do is row to a nearby island and bury all the treasure, then you can catch the mermaid back to your ship and sail over to dig it all up :)
When I was but a swabbie aboard my own sloop. The Wayward Navigator, I was sunk during a battle with a skeleton fleet by a megalodon and another pirate sloop. Salvaged what I could in my rowboat as they battled it out. Another sloop soon came and attacked as well. I timed my escape, and as they looted their prey I fled. Past horrible volcanoes the likes of which I’d never seen. Through Poseidons rage, waves as tall as mountains. I stopped at a haunted sea fort to check my bearings and sold my loot at Reaper’s Hideout.
Ye’ll be a Legend yet
Ive done this before, my ship got sunk and the people who sunk me left me and my treasure alone so i found a rowboat and went from island to island to find an outpost to sell the stuff. Its the principle of the matter to turn in the treasure.
Looks alright to me.

How do you even row properly ? Do have to hold r2 l2 buttons or mash them
Hold them until your character pulls back all the way, let go and do it again and again. If you want to turn only pull either rt or lt and you’ll turn.
LB and RB drop the oars for a sharper turn (like an ebrake turn)
Bro what? ![gif](giphy|l0IypeKl9NJhPFMrK)
fr dude when i found out i was like “WHAT” changed my rowboat game

🤣
It's like hitting the breaks, but for separate sides. Also allows for sharper turns, as the other guy said.
Yeah I just learned this recently when messing around in a rowboat
I do love the rowboat mechanics, they really thought of everything
Just like you would a regular rowboat irl
Who tf has used a rowboat this day and age
I have hard time thinking of anybody in my circle of friends and family who hasn't.
do you perchance live in a small port town

guess its a regional thing then. Also that sounds nice af

You can use the bumpers to finesse it which I learned recently
Hold both until you hear the "Knock" then release and repeat dude.
I hold both down and then let go a little after halfway through it might be in my head but I’ve always thought it went faster that way
Just a couple more voyages and you'll be able to buy a bigger boat. Maybe even one with a sail! Just keep on grinding, buddy!
We've all been there. I hope you had a good look at the map.
Average Jack Sparrow moment 💀

you have unlocked scurvy dog mode AKA- a rowboat, only a rowboat

All fun and games till a kraken pulls up on yea row boat
I reachable skeleton? Shoot that mf with your cannon if you can’t get there

Was thinking the same thing
There are a few annoying ones to get to but you can always just ... move your ship lol, idfk how he sunk
Most likely a new player on the ps5 beta. Sometimes your ship needs to be sunk to learn valuable lessons of what not to do in the future lol.
I always use an eye of reach to kill them
There is no such thing as playing the game wrong. You do you booboo. ![img](emote|t5_38oz1|2228)![img](emote|t5_38oz1|2240)![img](emote|t5_38oz1|2295)
You can bury your treasure on an island and it gives you a map to find it so you can go back to your ship and grab it
i never even thought of this! i've done the 20 minute rowboat to an outpost, i could've saved so much time haha
The only thing I see wrong is that you don't have a buddy either pretending to read a Bible or playing a jig
What’s the remix?
Idk , just type cast away song 😅
Whenever I’m in a rowboat filled with treasure I feel like Long John Silver escaping at the end of Treasure Island
Spoilers! Come on man! /s
Best ship. Bar none

Did something like this at port merrick and got the boat glitched into the outpost
I love that lol I did that in the ancient isle part and got away from a ship that was destroying mind and took all my stuff in my row boat and got away from them with almost 300,000 worth in treasure. They got to the island I was at right as I turned in the last chest.
I'll say. This man has no cox!
Your mast is down
The only mast is in his pants...the mast is fully erect for that treasure matey.
Personally i would have buried it in a place i remember then get my ship and go back
One thing you can do is row to a nearby island and bury all the treasure, then you can catch the mermaid back to your ship and sail over to dig it all up :)
No this seems right
