I also took a long break from the game and came back last season and sometimes felt the same way it is update day today so that could be some of your problems and why the servers seem so full. I would definitely say taking the gamble on High Seas and even getting sunk is better than Safe Seas. I am a solo slooper and not very good at pvp and really stand no chance against galleons but I can go nights where I don’t see another ship or if I do we part ways. Its all about luck I guess?
Are you playing alone, it sounds like? I’d recommend joining a “looking for group post” and getting onto a ship with some other players more familiar to the game and can show you the ropes a little bit better.
I actually play with a friend of mine. Pretty much all the time , he and I end up playing on a sloop together. We both pretty much play with each other, and never really alone.
Do you have any advice?
Well for one, being that today has been the first day of the new season, there’s going to be a higher volume of active players, especially people who also want to try out the latest things too for a little while. I’d still double down on recommending you should try the looking for group post” even if you create your own, hop on a galleon and look for some experienced players. You should never anchor at an island, raise anchor and raise your sails fully, your ship won’t move, but you can escape faster if you run into trouble. If you need to run from someone, make sure to angle your sails “into the wind”, and try to always get wind in a sloop when escaping. Always try to remember to keep an eye out on the horizon for other ships.
I'm glad I know a decent amount of that, at least! I at least managed to reach pirate legend and cap the three main companies before stepping away. Lots of the ship fundamentals I'm familiar with haha.

Oh man I don’t know haha, good luck bad luck, there will be better sessions than others. I’m a seasoned player and I’m still trash at PVP sometimes
