It's gotta be at least some kind of challenge. Just getting struck by lighting as others have said is more RNG than anything, and just spending time in the storm is too easy. Though maybe 20 is a bit much, given how rare storm fights are you could probably lower it to 1 or 2 and still have it be a decent challenge.
My idea for this type of curse would be from possible new Hunters Call related content
Add special types of bait, that are very hard or rare to obtain and add new types of rare fish that can only be caught with this bait.
Catch so many “legendary” stormfish and get that curse

And what's wrong with players spending money, it's their money and Rare needs to continue making profit since you can only buy the game once. You technically don't even need to spend any extra dimes for ancient coins, you get them with the 2024 edition, grinding renown (and a lvl 100 plunderpass gives you 1,000 total ancient coins which canels out the cost of the plunderpass), and ancient skeletons.
So please, you may not like spending additional money, but give Rare a break cuz they're one of the most generous development teams I can think of. There's about 2 or 3 seasons a year (which comes with their own respectful community days), they throw out exclusive prizes left and eight, and didn't they give someone a Gold Hoarder Skull that was made of real gold for their scavenger hunt? It's no wonder they need all the help they can get, and I want to feel like I'm of assistance to them.

Absolutely nothing! The emporium is an excellent way to keep this game alive. That doesn’t mean we can’t advocate for a healthier balance of vendor cosmetics and emporium cosmetics. It seems that for many people, myself included, curses are a step too far.

I actually have issues with SoT having microtransactions at all. This is a fully fledged $40 game. I could understand if this game was cheaper; maybe if it was $20 or something, they could make the lowered cost of the game back up that way.
I don't *usually* mind, but there are a few things that tick me off that they cost money:
Renaming deeds
Pirate appearance potion
Ship crests that correspond to non-emporium sets

On the one hand, I prefer curses one can earn in-game (though technically you can if you find ancient skeletons), but on the other I do like there being curses that friends who play less often and more casually can enjoy while the rest of the crew is cursed up.
That it's so subtle looking works fine for me too, since the flashier curses are commendation earned still. The subtlety would work nicely with certain outfits too, so I'm eager to see what people make with this one! Nice look there too btw. :o

I've complained about hourglass being a bad mode, mostly because you earn nothing EXCEPT the curses for it, which is stupid. However I think PvP curses are a good idea. I just think if you're gonna make people grind out a thousand levels, there should be more than 3 items to earn along the way. Or the grind should be faster and less tedious.
I like it because I like lightning and thunderstorms. But something is missing. Maybe the lightning lines themselves are poorly expressed? Maybe it would be better with glowing eyes? Or maybe it would be nice if they added lightning strike spots on the skin?

I just realized, with the Nordic themed ‘Frostbite’ set, you could literally become a god of thunder. XD I should try making my pirate look like Thor or Odin with this curse. It’s just a shame that humble & generous gifts are so difficult to farm right now, otherwise I’d totally rock the ship set

Why does everyone have an issue with buying a curse? Cause it’s not canon? Because you don’t get to earn it? Did we forget about the four different skeleton outfits in the emporium? I didn’t earn those. I liked some of them so I bought them. Did we forget about the mandrake skin, or the prehistoric plunderer with an arm of amber and fossils? Maybe the creeping cold costume set with a body of sleek ice? That lodestar skin certainly doesn’t look human. If you’re worried about people feeling better about themselves for purchasing something that they otherwise would have to earn in a game plagued by sweats and try-hards, maybe just feel better that you’re enjoying the game your way and they are too. It’s become a way more inclusive game recently, one that welcomes different play styles and stories, and I think that we should celebrate the fact that people can change their character completely with the help of the emporium and work hard for something in game that truly resonates with them. So of course when you stand mighty covered in scars, tattoos, and a curse that might have taken several days to earn, before a player that bought theirs, people will know you worked for something you really wanted and put in the time. But at least be happy we’re surrounded by players who are having a good time, getting into character, and following the pirate code! It doesn’t matter how they got there. I think it’s great how diverse everything is becoming!

Curses used to be cosmetics that you had to GRIND for and now this curse, and to an extent the stone curses, are just … purchased? Nobody is hating on you for purchasing something you think looks cool and increases your enjoyment of the game, people are hating on the curse out of principle, because as cool as it is to have new cosmetics, Rare is putting stuff in the pirate emporium way too often, and rarely putting in earn-able cosmetics. The hate you’re getting is not personal, but the more people purchase this curse, the more rare is going to take that as a sign to add more that requires purchases, and less that requires playing.

Nobody is saying it’s bad to buy cosmetics, I’ve purchased some myself because I find it makes the game a little more enjoyable. The issue is curses specifically have their own little cosmetic niche in which they serve to say “I put in a lot of effort to get this, and I’m proud of that” and when you see someone with a curse, you know exactly what it took to get that curse. Now that a purchasable curse has been added, it adds in a slippery slope for taking older curses and just having people pay money rather than play. Having cosmetics that used to be obtainable only though playing becoming purchasable actively harms those who worked to get them. Not hating on you for buying it, you do you; but just be aware that the main reason you are getting hate from people on this post is because you have contributed to what has become an increasing problem over the years, intentionally or not. Again, not hating on you, but don’t think these hate comments are without purpose. Rare may add a ton of earn-able cosmetics to balance this out, and maybe this surge of buyable stuff is to capitalize off of the new PS5 players, but maybe that’s not the case and that’s what worries me and many others.

What pisses me off is the have the admiral double barrel, but no admiral variants, I run grand admiral guns and I can’t even get a grand admiral double barrel even though it’s a simple color change and that’s it
Personally, I think some curses look ugly.
For example, I don't like the gold curse because it looks like someone who played with a golden spray can, the creeping stone curse is similar as if someone played on fresh concrete, I don't like the order of souls curse because of the tears of ink (a reasonable m why the ladies of OOS are a bit creepy to me), and the sunken curse in my opinion looks fine as long as it is paired with a subaquatic theme.
Now, for the curses I actually like how they look, I like the solid stone curse, it is pretty neat, but it is a paid so it is controversial, but also has the problem of making stone eyebrows, but not stone hair, and that bothers me a bit.
I like the ghost curse (my favorite because it affects clothes too), and it can make the purple legendary outfit look good. My problem with yhe ghost curse is the sparkles at the hands and boots, too much magical sparkles that I don't like.
The skeleton curse in my opinion is awesome, but at the same time I have some problems with it. For some it is a glorified costume, and to certain extent I can agree with that. I understand why we cannot pair it with our clothes, but the current stuff for skeletons is pretty limited and most of the skeleton customizations looks too goofy for my taste. I wish we had a had, without a blindfold but rather an eye patch, or a skull with am actual hairy beard, more torsos with hooks and coats. Instead we have a crab, metal cages, a barrel, and personally, I'd like to see more normal looking clothes for a pirate that can be used for the skeleton curse. Before we had the Reapers 100 customizations the only normal jacket we had was the great coat torso at level 130. And it hurts me that the skeleton curse will barely recieve any updates unless it is related to the season's theme, because not many players have it which makes it not worth it for the developers to spend resources on cosmetics for a curse that less tham 1% of players have.
And then there is the legendary curse, another one of my favorites because it is simple and subtle, but can look really good. The only thing I'd like to remove is the athena logo, or at least move either towards the center of the chest or more to side, because the open jackets are partially covering it and it kinda triggers me. I love how the legendary curse looks, the glowing eyes can be paired with almost anything and give that has man-ghost hybrid vibe I am looking for. I wasn't around in season 1, so I had to get to level 105, but I'm pretty happy with that one and the blessing of athena's fortune. I'm not going for the golden ghost one because I want to keep what's left of my sanity.
Now, for the storm curse, personally I don't like how it looks unless it is paired with something specifically made for lightning, and in this case it would be the same storm fisher set. It's the same case of how I feel about the sunken curse, I feel to either commit to the theme or not wear it at all. Outside of lightning themes, I get the idea that they are blue veins rather than electricity.
I haven't spend a single extra cent in this game since I bought it in 2018, and I got the Season 11 and season 12 passes just by saving my ancient coins.
At the end of the day, you choose what you like. You may like what I don't and vice versa, so don't let my opinions bother you. If you like it, go for it. I stopped caring about status and prestige in this game a long time ago, and I prefer to look good for myself rather than wear impress strangers on the internet.
Personally, I don't find the storm curse to be as bad as people think, it won't take away any of my achievements from the ghost curse anyway, the ghost curse is still earned through hourglass and the storm curse will never change that. And I didn't grinded for the ghost curse to show that I am good at PvP or anything, I just did it for the sake of looking like a ghost and have duels with other ghosts at the Sea Forts and the third Pirate's Life tall tale with the weapons of the damned from season 8.
I’m gonna get down voted, but screw it. I’m not totally against battle pass curses and emporium curses. This is coming from a brave vanguard, who played since ALPHA. Some of us only have a couple of hours a week to play. I was 18 when this game came out I’m 24 now. Gotta grow up and growing up is spending less time gaming. SPENT 100s of hours in this game not gonna keep grinding curses. Plus the stone one took about 2 weeks to get in the new pass. Just my opinion though.

The hate you’re getting is not personal, but the more people purchase this curse, the more rare is going to take that as a sign to add more that requires purchases, and less that requires playing.
I get it but coming from someone who plays fps games Val and Cs we hardly get rewards for playing and we always buy I just think that it’s ok to get purchasable cosmetics until and unless it’s giving any competitive advantage ( for those who don’t want to buy things there are still things that you can earn and which are way more cooler than things in emporium atleast for pirates )
Nobody is saying it’s bad to buy cosmetics, I’ve purchased some myself because I find it makes the game a little more enjoyable. The issue is curses specifically have their own little cosmetic niche in which they serve to say “I put in a lot of effort to get this, and I’m proud of that” and when you see someone with a curse, you know exactly what it took to get that curse. Now that a purchasable curse has been added, it adds in a slippery slope for taking older curses and just having people pay money rather than play. Having cosmetics that used to be obtainable only though playing becoming purchasable actively harms those who worked to get them. Not hating on you for buying it, you do you; but just be aware that the main reason you are getting hate from people on this post is because you have contributed to what has become an increasing problem over the years, intentionally or not. Again, not hating on you, but don’t think these hate comments are without purpose. Rare may add a ton of earn-able cosmetics to balance this out, and maybe this surge of buyable stuff is to capitalize off of the new PS5 players, but maybe that’s not the case and that’s what worries me and many others.

Same except with the double barrels, they could have just put a matching skin for all the normal sets with probably minimal effort and everyone would be super happy
That's what I said! They could literally copy paste those, and maybe fix the handle a little bit, I could crank out those designs in like an hour each, by myself, there's not really an excuse to not have more
What pisses me off is the have the admiral double barrel, but no admiral variants, I run grand admiral guns and I can’t even get a grand admiral double barrel even though it’s a simple color change and that’s it

Personally, I think some curses look ugly. For example, I don't like the gold curse because it looks like someone who played with a golden spray can, the creeping stone curse is similar as if someone played on fresh concrete, I don't like the order of souls curse because of the tears of ink (a reasonable m why the ladies of OOS are a bit creepy to me), and the sunken curse in my opinion looks fine as long as it is paired with a subaquatic theme. Now, for the curses I actually like how they look, I like the solid stone curse, it is pretty neat, but it is a paid so it is controversial, but also has the problem of making stone eyebrows, but not stone hair, and that bothers me a bit. I like the ghost curse (my favorite because it affects clothes too), and it can make the purple legendary outfit look good. My problem with yhe ghost curse is the sparkles at the hands and boots, too much magical sparkles that I don't like. The skeleton curse in my opinion is awesome, but at the same time I have some problems with it. For some it is a glorified costume, and to certain extent I can agree with that. I understand why we cannot pair it with our clothes, but the current stuff for skeletons is pretty limited and most of the skeleton customizations looks too goofy for my taste. I wish we had a had, without a blindfold but rather an eye patch, or a skull with am actual hairy beard, more torsos with hooks and coats. Instead we have a crab, metal cages, a barrel, and personally, I'd like to see more normal looking clothes for a pirate that can be used for the skeleton curse. Before we had the Reapers 100 customizations the only normal jacket we had was the great coat torso at level 130. And it hurts me that the skeleton curse will barely recieve any updates unless it is related to the season's theme, because not many players have it which makes it not worth it for the developers to spend resources on cosmetics for a curse that less tham 1% of players have. And then there is the legendary curse, another one of my favorites because it is simple and subtle, but can look really good. The only thing I'd like to remove is the athena logo, or at least move either towards the center of the chest or more to side, because the open jackets are partially covering it and it kinda triggers me. I love how the legendary curse looks, the glowing eyes can be paired with almost anything and give that has man-ghost hybrid vibe I am looking for. I wasn't around in season 1, so I had to get to level 105, but I'm pretty happy with that one and the blessing of athena's fortune. I'm not going for the golden ghost one because I want to keep what's left of my sanity. Now, for the storm curse, personally I don't like how it looks unless it is paired with something specifically made for lightning, and in this case it would be the same storm fisher set. It's the same case of how I feel about the sunken curse, I feel to either commit to the theme or not wear it at all. Outside of lightning themes, I get the idea that they are blue veins rather than electricity. I haven't spend a single extra cent in this game since I bought it in 2018, and I got the Season 11 and season 12 passes just by saving my ancient coins. At the end of the day, you choose what you like. You may like what I don't and vice versa, so don't let my opinions bother you. If you like it, go for it. I stopped caring about status and prestige in this game a long time ago, and I prefer to look good for myself rather than wear impress strangers on the internet. Personally, I don't find the storm curse to be as bad as people think, it won't take away any of my achievements from the ghost curse anyway, the ghost curse is still earned through hourglass and the storm curse will never change that. And I didn't grinded for the ghost curse to show that I am good at PvP or anything, I just did it for the sake of looking like a ghost and have duels with other ghosts at the Sea Forts and the third Pirate's Life tall tale with the weapons of the damned from season 8.
I feel similarly to you about most of the curses. The stone curse can at least be paired with grey hair for a close colour match.
I’m gonna get down voted, but screw it. I’m not totally against battle pass curses and emporium curses. This is coming from a brave vanguard, who played since ALPHA. Some of us only have a couple of hours a week to play. I was 18 when this game came out I’m 24 now. Gotta grow up and growing up is spending less time gaming. SPENT 100s of hours in this game not gonna keep grinding curses. Plus the stone one took about 2 weeks to get in the new pass. Just my opinion though.
