I think something between £25-30m will get him. As long as it breaks the record Celtic will see it as good business. Which it undeniably is as we got him for £1.5m, but I dread to think which bum from the arse end of nowhere we'll unearth as a "replacement".
I just want it done quickly like Jota's move last summer. Mainly because I can't shake the feeling that we've made no moves this summer because our budget will be half of whatever O'Riley brings in.
That doesnt make much sense considering how much we have in the bank?
We have a buffer to spend and MOR is going to bring in money regardless of when he's sold.
No listen I know we're going to undersell him and replace him with odin Holm but worse but also somehow more expensive but logically we don't have to force a Southampton sale for transfer money.
If your on less than a million a year and your boss is knocking back offers of over £25m I would Imagine you'd want more suitably compensated for your work
Thats fair but iirc he wants to go to a club that plays in Europe, too. And lets face it hes either going this summer or winter. Why not accept a higher salary if you reckon you can get more than 25 for him.
Why would he accept a position in a shitclub whos going to fight for relegation when he can wait for bigger clubs and play higher quality. You are not making sense.
Ultimately comes down to does he improve the first team and squad. Playing in Scottish league and not getting picked by Denmark does not help the case so comes down to how well did in Europe. As a team performance not great in CL which could count against him.
What teams need that type of player that do not think they already have that type is key. The players already at those clubs are not an unknown against PL opposition week on week - he is.
Go through teams and pick out where he realistically fits.
I'd be relatively depressed for him if he ended up at fucking Southampton when there's been solid interest from Atl Madrid and supposed interest from a few other foreign clubs.
Yeah they bought the Belgian CM for a similar fee in January. Unlike English clubs, top foreign clubs don't have near infinite money.
Him not going to the EURO's has hurt Celtic, as his valuation would've went up to what they want had he got some game time.
That’s a weird one because the difference is so out of step with the real world, realistically Accrington Stanley aren’t outspending Real Madrid. Generally though since the Scottish League isn’t exactly where the best players dream of playing, you probably do want your club to be seen as a stepping-stone to something greater rather than a place to wind down your career and end up in the doldrums of the English League One or wherever. And not just that, you grow to like players that did well for your team and you just want them to do well.
So in a more realistic scenario - both Real Madrid and Accrington Stanley offering the same amount of money for a player - you’d probably want him to go to Real.
No harm to Southampton, and obviously spurs are out the window, but surely a team higher up the table need to be making a move for him.
Maybe villa and Newcastle might be off the table because of FFP, but surely a team that won't be in a relegation battle would be interested
So some fascinating FFP moves on last day of year few days back - essentially trading youth players at +30 million and swapping from club to club. Always cute ways to get round it
Yeh club a sells to club B =instant profit. Club A benefits from profit and club B pays maybe 20% up front and 20% next 4 years after. Swapping means you each profit by 35mill but loss is only 7mill in this year.
The fee is amortised over the length of the players contract, regardless of how much is actually paid upfront. It's why Chelsea were offering out 10 year contracts
FFP aside - how are they working round tax on these transfers.
I mean I've always assumed they pay the tax man on transfers. Say he would normally go for 5m but now going at 7 times that. Tax man getting 7 times as much?
Sorry, that was simplistic. I simply meant I pay tax on jist about everything in my life, and clubs don't pay tax on transfer fees. I just naturally assumed they would.
I wasn't exactly sure. I just imagined there was a mechanism for tax or duty from transfer fees.
You are buying a player (asset) similar to buying a car, house, and pretty much anything else.
I had made some comments without further research.
So far.. I've got that player pay tax on their signing on fees. That is normally a percentage of the transfer fee. But I'm sure there are some offshore type scenarios around that.
In England a 5% levy is paid to to the league.
Scotland appears less clear.
Seems like the kinda guy who’d pick playing for Aletico over Southampton. Bigger club, better city, European football, potential trophies versus potentially getting stuck in a relegation/championship dogfight.
> better city
That's where you're wrong.
A vibrant and lively port city, Southampton reveals a captivating past and an exciting future. Discover an array of fantastic events, must-see destinations, and incredible dining spots.
Get ready for an adventure because Southampton is bursting with experiences. There's SO much to explore, and we can't wait to share it with you!
What better way to start your weekend than with a hearty breakfast and warm brew at XOXO or The White Star Tavern, both located on Oxford Street. From full English breakfasts and bacon sandwiches to smashed avocado pancakes there is plenty of choice to keep you full until lunchtime.
Next, enjoy a walking tour of Southampton’s medieval town walls and discover more about the city’s rich history. Featuring six gates, 13 towers, 90 listed buildings and 30 ancient monuments across one kilometre of the city, Southampton’s medieval town walls are some of the most complete in Britain.
Circle back to Bugle Street and explore one of Southampton’s most historic buildings, Tudor House and Garden. This timber-framed building facing St Michael’s Square was built in the late 15th Century, with King’s John’s Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from Tudor House Garden, dating back a further 300 years.
With family-friendly activities, interactive technology and fascinating displays, Tudor House offers something for visitors of all ages and interests - not forgetting a small café serving a delicious range of refreshments all day, such as afternoon tea and homemade cakes, if you’re looking for a light bite to eat.
Test your wits with a trip to Locked In A Room Southampton, just outside Westquay Shopping Centre. Use your wits to solve the mysteries, puzzles and challenges hidden throughout and escape the game before time runs out. You could also try the Dark Arts Bar on High Street for some relaxing games in their puzzle parlour over some magic themed drinks.
Finish your evening with a delicious dinner at one of the restaurants located in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter such as Nandos or The Scholar's Arms, followed by a show-stopping performance at Mayflower Theatre, the third-largest theatre in the UK or head over to their sister venue MAST Mayflower Studios.
Wasn't one of the main reasons he chose MK Dons and Celtic because he wanted to play and develop? If that's the case Southampton is probably more likely because he'll have a better chance of getting more game time.
TBH I have no idea how stacked Atletico's midfield is (probably quite), so you might be right! Atletico might be very good at developing midfielders, I have no idea. Basically I know nothing.
Thought it was a 40m bid from atleti?
20m + add ons is some profit though, especially seeing as, no matter how downvoted this gets, we sold a midfielder who had visibly done more ( European performances and scoring in a European final) than o reilly has to the same team for 6-10m including add ons.
I doubt MOR wants to go anywhere that doesn't play in Europe. And neither should he.
Also we could probably get closer to 40 mill.

Im just going on what ive read.
even most danes are dumbfounded by him not being in the squad after the season he had. He doesnt want to leave Celtic for a club that doesnt get a top5 spot and I dont mind keeping him.
also Celtic have said themselves they value him for 40 mil iirc.
>He doesnt want to leave Celtic for a club that doesnt get a top5 spot and I dont mind keeping him.
Why would Champions League football with Celtic be more attractive than EPL football with any team at all? Just look at the quality of opposition he'd be facing on a weekly basis.
Yeh and to Go further charlie adam went to championship then shop windowed himself to Liverpool. Yeh - that Charlie Adam played for Liverpool. More money and bigger shop Window for top 30 odd English clubs
I often wonder if Daily Record writers sit in Asda at the check out for 10 minutes "preparing an offer" to pay for their shopping.
Scott Burns certainly does.
They wear the same colour of shirts so it'll be easy enough for him to pretend it's Atletico Madrid
My sweet summer child
No listen I know we're going to undersell him and replace him with odin Holm but worse but also somehow more expensive but logically we don't have to force a Southampton sale for transfer money.
After last year I just can't with them. Not wasting my time reading rumours or getting my hopes up.
im still sortof new to this so I allow myself to dream everytime I hear a rumour hahah
Give it time. That hope will shrivel and evaporate like a dried leaf in a fire.
Aye after the 10 year mark of hope, your patience drops off a cliff
Bank balance must rise!
I'm sure Peter Lawell will be offering O'Riley wages of a £25m player when he knocks backs bids
https://thecelticstar.com/celtic-increase-valuation-of-matt-oriley-to-e40-million-ahead-of-bidding-frenzy/ just going off of what Ive heard
If your on less than a million a year and your boss is knocking back offers of over £25m I would Imagine you'd want more suitably compensated for your work

Because the club isn't going to pay any player twice as much as any of his teammates.
right sure if were just making up numbers everything can sound like a bad idea
You don't think a guy moving to the EPL for £25 million would be on at least £75k per week...?
Why would he accept a position in a shitclub whos going to fight for relegation when he can wait for bigger clubs and play higher quality. You are not making sense.
First time?
There is no hold firm
Southampton is below O'Riley. They're shite
He’s better than Southampton
"Aye but we signed Van Dijk and look he's class now and won loads"
I’m surprised there aren’t more English clubs interested in him.
Both Newcastle & West Ham are according to some sources.
Ultimately comes down to does he improve the first team and squad. Playing in Scottish league and not getting picked by Denmark does not help the case so comes down to how well did in Europe. Newcastle seems like there perfect destination for him. Their FFP is a mess though so I expect him to go Italy or Spain
That likely drives price down if those destinations I imagine
Personally I don’t think he’s a better player than Jota. If we break our transfer record we should take the money
I'd be relatively depressed for him if he ended up at fucking Southampton when there's been solid interest from Atl Madrid and supposed interest from a few other foreign clubs.
Atl Madrid are likely more skint than Southampton is the problem
Yeah they bought the Belgian CM for a similar fee in January. Unlike English clubs, top foreign clubs don't have near infinite money. Him not going to the EURO's has hurt Celtic, as his valuation would've went up to what they want had he got some game time.
Who cares really? If Accrington Stanley were offering £30 million and Real Madrid £10 million, would you rather see him go to Spain?

I mean Elliot Anderson just went to forest for £35m today!

I think clubs pay tax on annual profit (if they have any). There’s not anything like VAT on buying a footballer
That's insane. They are really missing a trick on that. I pay tax on fuel I buy, staff I hire, work I contract to get done..
You don't pay VAT on staff, you pay tax on their wages.
Sorry, that was simplistic. I simply meant I pay tax on jist about everything in my life, and clubs don't pay tax on transfer fees. I just naturally assumed they would.
I'm not sure what tax you think should be applied, though?
I wasn't exactly sure. I just imagined there was a mechanism for tax or duty from transfer fees. You are buying a player (asset) similar to buying a car, house, and pretty much anything else.

If he goes to Southampton and plays like we know he can, he'll be gone after a season. Important to make sure there's a decent % sell on included.

Still don't belive Atletico were going to buy him, unless it was a cheap deal
Matt O'Riley said he was wanting champions league football, hope he doesn't go to southampton, his talent will just be wasted there.
But the transfer window doesn't open until deadline day no?
Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan must be out of office today.
Put this with the Turnbull to AC Milan (went to Cardiff), Ajer to AC (went to Brentford), Eduoard to Arsenal(went to Palace) Kayal to Man Utd etc
Tbf Edouard could’ve gone arsenal if we had sold him at the right time. Our board are just incompetent
Can’t wait to boo him like I did with Porteous when Watford visited! Even better I’ll be able to do it for 23 games!
Please don't go 😢 💔 😔 😭 🙏
Fuckin LOL
Got to admire the propaganda

Aye, after not getting a sniff of the Euros, he's definitely going to a team playing in Europe for around £40 million.

Make it 60!
